Cultural and Economic Barriers in Switching to Clean Cooking Energy: Does Women’s Agency Make a Difference?
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: agency, clean cooking, cultural and economic norms, Energy, energy barriers, innovation, transformation
The major objective of this study is to identify and analyze cultural and economic barriers to sustained adoption of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as the primary clean cooking energy in India, and examining underpinning values and norms in socio-technical energy system of the country. In 2016, the Government of India introduced a mega scheme called Ujjwala for clean cooking energy with LPG connects in women’s name. This policy, however, experienced limited implementation, but did lead to enhancing women’s agency in many areas. Women’s agency is defined briefly as their ability to set goals, develop capacities, and act on their defined goals to realize desired outcomes in wellbeing and capabilities. In the case of switching to clean cooking energy, the question can be posed as: as women are the ones who carry out most of the onerous work of collecting and cooking with wood, are they able to make decisions on the adoption of clean cooking fuel, that enhance their agency and the wellbeing... Electrical and Energy Systems Integration for Maritime Environment-Friendly Transportation
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: design methodology, electric ship, Energy Storage, hybrid-propelled ship, port power system, renewables, shore connection, transportation electrification, zero-emission navigation
The policies against climate change require the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of marine transportation. To reach the planned goals, the most promising approach is working both on ships improvement and ports redesign. The latter must enable the new green ships supply with sustainable electrical energy, by integrating shore connection systems, local renewables, and energy storage systems. In this paper, a methodology to obtain such an objective is proposed, capable of taking into account both ships’ and ports’ characteristics. The methodology workflow is explained through a case study, where two shore connection power sizes and two different operative approaches for recharging the ship onboard energy storage are considered. A discussion about the most suitable energy storage technologies is also provided. The case study shows how the methodology can be applied, as well as demonstrating that the port infrastructure has a direct effect on the ship environmental performance.

CFD Simulations of the New Construction of Light Brattice Wall for Mine Shafts
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: brattice wall, composites for mining industry, hoisting system modernization, mine shaft
Brattice walls in mine shafts are used for various purposes, for example, permanent brattice walls can be used to separate ventilation sections. They can be also used in the case of modernization of the hoisting system, as it is in Shaft no. 1 of the Szczygłowice department, part of the Knurów-Szczyłowice coal mine. To shorten the time and reduce costs of the hoist modernization, the shaft is to be partitioned into two sections—with the hoist operating in one of them and another one being modernized in the other section. The new construction of the light brattice wall was designed for this purpose. To prove its usefulness and safety it was tested in the laboratory and computer simulations. The following paper presents CFD simulations of the brattice—its methodology and results together with an overview of works to be conducted in the shaft.

Refrigerated Transport: State of the Art, Technical Issues, Innovations and Challenges for Sustainability
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cold chain, environmental impact, PCM, refrigerated transport, refrigeration, renewable energies, Sustainability, vaccine
The cold chain is responsible for perishable products preservation and transportation, maintaining a proper temperature to slow biological decay processes. Often the efficiency of the cold chain is less than ideal, significantly increasing food waste and energy consumption. Refrigerated transport is a critical phase of the cold chain because of its negative impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that around 15% of global fossil fuel energy is used in the refrigerated transport sector, so there has been a growing interest in the last decades in the optimization of these systems in order to reduce their environmental impact. Vapor compression refrigeration units, usually powered by means of a diesel engine, are the most commonly used systems in road refrigerated transport. This paper provides a review of (a) currently used systems and alternative technologies that could reduce the environmental impacts of road refrigerated transport and (b) optimizatio... [more]

Reference Trajectory Based Quasi-Sliding Mode with Event-Triggered Control
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control design, discrete time systems, event-triggering, reaching law approach, reference trajectory generator, sliding mode control
The study presents a novel event-triggered quasi-sliding mode control algorithm for linear discrete time systems. The problem is divided into two main parts. Firstly, the sliding mode control of perturbed discrete time systems is considered. In order to limit the impact of external disturbances to one sampling step only, a reference trajectory-based control law is introduced. The proposed control method drives the system’s representative point to an a priori designed reference position in each control step, thus minimizing the influence of disturbance and improving the robustness. Moreover, the reference trajectory is generated according to a novel reaching law, which ensures the nonswitching movement within the quasi-sliding mode band. In the latter part of the study, the proposed control strategy is supplemented with an event-triggering algorithm. In the modified strategy the control signal is only updated when a certain triggering condition occurs. Therefore, the need for communicat... [more]

Valorization of Distillery Stillage for Bioenergy Production: A Review
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioelectrochemical treatment, bioethanol, biohydrogen, biomethane, melanoidin, polyphenols
In alcohol distilleries, the amount of distillery stillage generated can be up to 15 times larger than the amount of alcohol produced. The stillage has high concentrations of organics and nitrogen, a low pH, and a dark brown color. Currently, stillage is mainly used for soil fertilization. For this purpose, it requires thickening and is used seasonally, which creates storage problems and transport costs. To reduce environmental pollution, physicochemical and biological processes have been employed for the treatment of distillery stillage. However, according to bioeconomy principles, the stillage should be transformed into value-added products. Therefore, this review paper focuses on methods of stillage processing that enable energy recovery. Due to its high content of organic compounds, stillage is often used as a raw material for biogas production. Accordingly, anaerobic digestion of stillage is discussed, including an overview of the bioreactors used and the effects of operational pa... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling turbine, film cooling hole, gas turbine, large eddy simulation
Large eddy simulations on film cooling hole array on a flat plate was carried out to investigate upstream turbulence effect. Circular cylinders were configured to create a turbulent boundary layer and its diameter has been adjusted to generate 13% upstream turbulence intensity in the main flow. Due to the small pitch to diameter configuration of the cylinder, two-dimensional LES analysis was carried out in advance and the results showed that LES was an essential method to resolve flow field around and downstream circular cylinder, which was not available in RANS simulations. The three-dimensional LES results showed reasonable agreement in turbulence intensity and normalized velocity distributions along the vertical with measured data. According to the blowing ratio, the cooling flow coverage on the surface along the stream-wise direction was varied and well agreed with measured data. Additionally, upstream boundary flows were partially ingested inside the cooling hole and discharged ag... [more]

Characteristics of Waste Generated in Dimension Stone Processing
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: dimension natural stone processing, industrial waste treatment, stone waste, sustainable manufacturing, waste generation, waste recycling
Natural dimension stone processing generates large volumes of stone waste, which have a significant impact on the environment, as well as on the efficiency and profitability of the stone-processing plant. The article presents the characteristics of waste produced as a result of natural dimension stone processing and the structure of the waste production process. Solid stone scraps and sludge were distinguished. On the basis of the performed analyses, it was shown that stone waste constitutes 10−35% in relation to the quantity of the processed stone material, with the quantity of sludge being even threefold greater than the volume of solid scraps. According to the circular economy principles, the aim should be to reduce the amount of waste generated by reducing primary resources in favour of secondary material. Reducing the volume of stone waste is possible through rational planning of stone production while at the same time maximising the efficiency of stone material usage and introduc... [more]

The Impact of Aging-Preventive Algorithms on BESS Sizing under AGC Performance Standards
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Automatic Generation Control, BESS sizing, Energy Storage System
It is normally accepted that Battery Energy Storage Systems improve frequency regulation by providing fast response to the Automatic Generation Control. However, currently available control strategies may lead to early Energy Storage Systems aging given that Automatic Generation Control requirements are increasing due to zero carbon power generation integration. In this sense, it is important to analyze the aging phenomena in order to assess the technical−economical usefulness of Battery Energy Storage Systems towards zero carbon power systems. In order to avoid early aging, various proposals on aging-reducing algorithms can be found; however, it is unclear if those aging-reducing algorithms affect the performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems. It is also unclear whether those effects must be internalized to properly dimension the capacity of Battery Energy Storage Systems to both comply with performance standards and to prevent early aging. Thus, this paper estimates the storage c... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneous photocatalysis, hydrogen generation, nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanotubes, quantum dots, vis response, water splitting
In the past few decades, extensive studies have been performed to utilize the solar energy for photocatalytic water splitting; however, up to the present, the overall efficiencies reported in the literature are still unsatisfactory for commercialization. The crucial element of this challenging concept is the proper selection and design of photocatalytic material to enable significant extension of practical application perspectives. One of the important features in describing photocatalysts, although underestimated, is particle morphology. Accordingly, this review presents the advances achieved in the design of photocatalysts that are dedicated to hydrogen generation, with an emphasis on the particle morphology and its potential correlation with the overall reaction performance. Experimental and Kinetic Studies on Steam Gasification of a Biomass Char
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AAEMs, biomass char, kinetic model, steam gasification
The maximum gasification rate of corn stalk char (CSC) appeared at high conversion range, and its quite different gasification behaviors from other carbonaceous materials are all derived from the catalytic effect of alkali and alkali earth metals (AAEMs), so it is necessary to study the effect of AAEMs and gasification kinetics of such biomass char. However, there are few systematic discussions about this effect and kinetic modeling. Thus, in this study, CSC samples were prepared in a fast pyrolysis fixed-bed reactor, and its gasification experiments were conducted on a pressurized magnetic suspension balance at various total pressures (0.1−0.7 MPa), steam concentrations (10−70 vol.%) and temperatures (725−900 °C). Moreover, a water-leached CSC (H2O-CSC) was also prepared to evaluate the impact of AAEMs on the gasification performance of CSC, and some well-known models were adopted to describe the gasification behaviors. On the basis of these results, the effect of primary AAEMs on the... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: clean coal technology, decision support system, energy generation technology, MULTIPLE criteria analysis, SMART method, technology management
The process of technology management contains various stages, such as the identification, selection, acquisition, implementation, and maintenance of technologies. In the case of power generation companies, a key aspect of the selection stage is the choice of generation technologies for newly commissioned units. The investment decision depends on many factors, primarily economic, environmental, social, technological, and legal, and represents a complex multi-criteria problem. Currently, the decision is further complicated by the often unpredictable tightening of environmental standards, forcing the closure of conventional sources, on which many countries have so far based their energy security. The paper analyzes the problem of choosing one of the so-called clean coal technologies to be implemented in conditions of transformation of the power sector. In this paper, five selected clean coal technologies are characterized, and the SMART method is adopted to technology selection. The follo... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric steel, electromagnetic shielding, power lines
Protection against the electromagnetic fields around high-voltage transmission lines is an issue of great importance, especially in the case of buildings near power lines. Indeed, the developed fields can be harmful for the habitants and electrical/electronic devices, so the implementation of appropriate measures to address the above electromagnetic interference issue is necessary in order to ensure the safety of both human beings and equipment. Several practices have been proposed to reduce the electric and the magnetic fields around overhead and underground transmission lines (minimum distance, shielded cables, anechoic chamber etc.). In this context, the scope of the current paper is the use of highly permeable magnetic sheets for shielding purposes, along with the development of an appropriate procedure, based on finite element analysis (FEA) for the efficient design of passive shielding. Measurement of Solubility of CO2 in NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and MgCl2 + CaCl2 Brines at Temperatures from 298 to 373 K and Pressures up to 20 MPa Using the Potentiometric Titration Method
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aqueous solutions, CO2 sequestration, CO2 solubility, ionic liquids, potentiometric titration
Understanding the carbon dioxide (CO2) solubility in formation brines is of great importance to several industrial applications, including CO2 sequestration and some CO2 capture technologies, as well as CO2-based enhanced hydrocarbon recovery methods. Despite years of study, there are few literature data on CO2 solubility for the low salinity range. Thus, in this study, the solubility of CO2 in distilled water and aqueous ionic solutions of NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2 and MgCl2 + CaCl2 were obtained in a low salinity range (0−15,000 ppm) at temperatures from 298−373 K and pressures up to 20 MPa using an accurate and unconventional method called potentiometric titration. An experimental data set of 553 data points was collected using this method. The results of the experiments demonstrate that increasing pressure increases the solubility of CO2 in various brines, whereas increasing temperature and salinity reduces the solubility. Keywords: anaerobic fermentation, Biomass, kinetic study, solid digestates
Biogas production is an important component of sustainable energy management. In addition to energy-rich biogas, this process also generates solid waste in the form of digestate. The management of this stream has been problematic for many years. One promising method of utilizing this fraction seems to be incineration under controlled conditions. This paper presents an analysis of mixtures of different digestates to assess their suitability for incineration. Four digestates based on corn silage CS and apple pomace AP were used as test fuel. The ultimate and proximate analysis showed that this fuel deviates from the standards accepted for pure biomass, but was found in other fuels, especially those treated as waste. This materials can be a valuable source of energy, but combustion needs be undertaken in special units. A Fast and Improved Tunable Aggregation Model for Stochastic Simulation of Spray Fluidized Bed Agglomeration
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agglomeration, Monte Carlo, morphology, polydisperse primary particles, tunable aggregation model
Agglomeration in spray fluidized bed (SFB) is a particle growth process that improves powder properties in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. In order to analyze the underlying mechanisms behind the generation of SFB agglomerates, modeling of the growth process is essential. Morphology plays an imperative role in understanding product behavior. In the present work, the sequential tunable algorithm developed in previous studies to generate monodisperse SFB agglomerates is improved and extended to polydisperse primary particles. The improved algorithm can completely retain the given input fractal properties (fractal dimension and prefactor) for polydisperse agglomerates (with normally distributed radii of primary particles having a standard deviation of 10% from the mean value). Other morphological properties strongly agreed with the experimental SFB agglomerates. Furthermore, this tunable aggregation model is integrated into the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The kinetics... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial maturation experiment, biomarkers, expelled oil, geochemical parameters, oil-source correlation, residual oil, Tasmanite oil shale
Lipid biomarkers play an important role in defining oil-source rock correlations. A fundamental assumption is that composition (or ratios) of biomarkers in oil is not significantly different from that in bitumen in the source rock. In order to compare the geochemical characteristics of expelled oil and residual oil, a Permian Tasmanite oil shale was used for an artificial maturation experiment to simulate the oil generation period. The results show that the Tasmanite oil shale generated high amounts of hydrocarbons (731 mg HC/g TOC) at low maturation temperatures (340 °C). The hydrocarbon (HC) group compositions are different between the expelled oil (with more aromatic HC and saturated HC) and the residual oil (with more resin fraction and asphaltene). The Pr/Ph ratio (up to 4.01) of the expelled hydrocarbons was much higher than that in residual oil (<1.0).
