Elastic Properties of Pannonian Basin Limestone under Different Saturation Conditions
Domagoj Vukadin, Jasna Orešković, Csaba Kutasi
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: elastic modulus, limestone reservoir, Pannonian Basin, ultrasonic velocity measurement
Understanding elastic properties of reservoir rocks is essential for seismic modeling under different saturation conditions as well as lithology discrimination. Experiments on elastic properties of limestones are significantly less published compared to siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The current study presents the results of laboratory measurements on Pannonian Basin limestone cores. The research was carried out for the first time for a hydrocarbon reservoir in the Bjelovar Depression, located in the southern part of the Pannonian Basin. Ultrasonic velocity measurements and determination of dynamic elastic properties were performed on limestone plugs, in dry and saturated condition under different confining pressure steps. Based on the results obtained in laboratory conditions, an empirical relationship between shear wave velocity (Vs) and compressional wave velocity (Vp) has been defined. The saturated samples show an effect of shear modulus weakening, while three samples have a she... [more]

Katarzyna Wolniewicz, Adam Zagubień, Mirosław Wesołowski
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: noise propagation, wind conditions, wind power, wind turbine
The justification for the construction of a wind farm depends primarily on two factors. The first one is the availability of the area with significant windiness; the second one is the environmental conditions in the selected location. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the need for parallel noise and energy analyses during the design of a turbine location and selection of its type on the wind farm. The noise analyses were performed according to ISO 9613-2. A detailed analysis of wind conditions in a given location is a basic activity to determine the profitability of a wind power plant foundation. The main environmental impact of WF is noise emission. The examples of wind turbines’ selection optimally utilizing wind resources in two particular locations are presented. Six wind turbines were analyzed for each location. The choice of a wind turbine for the examined location was determined by the parameters of the device, the results of annual wind measurements, and acceptable noise... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blockchain, cooperative mechanism, distributed energy resources (DER), multi agent system, P2P energy trading, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is gaining attention as a technology to effectively handle already existing distributed energy resources (DER). In order to manage a large number of DER, it is necessary to increase the number of P2P energy trading participants. For that, designing incentives for participants to engage in P2P energy trading is important. This paper describes a user-centric cooperative mechanism that enhances user participation in P2P energy trading. The key components of this incentive for participants to engage in P2P energy trading are described and evaluated in this study. The goal of the proposal is to make it possible to conduct economic transactions while reflecting the preferences of the traders in the ordering process, making it possible to conduct transactions with minimal effort. As a case study, the Higashi-Fuji demonstration experiment conducted in Japan verified the proposed mechanism. In this experiment, 19 households and 9 plugin hybrid vehicles (PHV) we... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-oil, biocrude, Biomass, bioproducts, blackcurrant pomace, fruit pomace, hydrothermal liquefaction, pyrolysis, Sustainability, upgrading
Herein, we proposed new two-stage processing of blackcurrant pomace toward a value-added, hydrocarbon-rich biocrude fraction. The approach consisted of thermochemical liquefaction of a wet-type organic matter into liquid biocrude followed by its upgrade by thermal and catalytic pyrolysis. Particularly, we put effort into investigating the effect of selected catalysts (ZSM-5 and HY zeolite) on the composition of the volatiles released during the pyrolysis of the biocrude. The latter was obtained through liquefaction of the raw material in the binary solvent system of water and isopropanol. The biocrude yield accounted for ca. 45 wt.% of the initial dry biomass. It was a complex mixture of various component groups with an abundant share of oxygenates, especially carboxylic acids and esters. Thereafter, the biocrude was subjected to a pyrolysis study performed by means of the microscale coupled pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique (Py-GC-MS). The dominant components id... [more]
An Approach to Dynamic Disaster Prevention in Strong Rock Burst Coal Seam under Multi-Aquifers: A Case Study of Tingnan Coal Mine

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: integrated prevention and control, multi-aquifers, multi-dynamic disasters, rock burst, roof pre-splitting
In order to prevent the multi-dynamic disasters induced by rock burst and roof water inrush in strong rock burst coal seams under multi-aquifers, such as is the case with the 207 working face in the Tingnan coal mine considered in this study, the exhibited characteristics of two types of dynamic disasters, namely rock burst and water inrush, were analyzed. Based on the lithology and predicted caving height of the roof, the contradiction between rock burst and water inrush was analyzed. In light of these analyses, an integrated method, roof pre-splitting at a high position and shattering at a low position, was proposed. According to the results of numerical modelling, pre-crack blasting at higher rock layers enables a cantilever roof cave in time, thereby reducing the risk of rock burst, and pre-crack blasting at underlying rock layers helps increase the crushing degree of the rock, which is beneficial for decreasing the caving height of rock layers above goaf, thereby preventing the oc... Global Transmission of Returns among Financial, Traditional Energy, Renewable Energy and Carbon Markets: New Evidence
Yang Liu, Xueqing Yang, Mei Wang
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capital market, energy market, European carbon allowance, market connection, renewable energy market, return transmission
Connections to world markets facilitate local markets developments to support more efficient capital allocation and greater investment and growth opportunities. Under the framework of cross-market rebalancing theory, in this study, we aim to systematically examine the market connections among world financial, energy, renewable energy and European carbon markets by measuring the return spillovers from 2008 to 2021. We find that the renewable energy market is more closely connected to the world financial and energy markets in the sense of the return transmission, while the carbon market is less connected to them. However, due to improved market regulations and determinations related to fighting climate change, the connections between the carbon market and other markets have gradually intensified. Plotting the return spillover indexes, we observe that strong return spillovers from the renewable energy market to other markets occurred when large investment plans were announced. Regarding t... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EBSILON, heat integration, HRSG, IGCC, Polygeneration, Simulation
Efficient and flexible operation is essential for competitiveness in the energy market. However, the CO2 emissions of conventional power plants have become an increasingly significant environmental dilemma. In this study, the optimization of a steam power process of an IGCC was carried out, which improved the overall performance of the plant. CCPP with a subcritical HRSG was modelled using EBSILON Professional. The numerical results of the model were validated by measurements for three different load cases (100, 80, and 60%). The results are in agreement with the measured data, with deviations of less than 5% for each case. Based on the model validation, the model was modified for the use of syngas as feed and the integration of heat into an IGCC process. The integration was optimized with respect to the performance of the CCPP by varying the extraction points, adjusting the steam parameters of the extractions and modifying the steam cycle. For the 100% load case, a steam turbine power... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: communication, detection, encryption, Energy Efficiency, fraud, knowledge graphs, microgrid, security, semantic technology, smart grid, smart home
Empowered by the emergence of novel information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as sensors and high-performance digital communication systems, Europe has adapted its electricity distribution network into a modern infrastructure known as a smart grid (SG). The benefits of this new infrastructure include precise and real-time capacity for measuring and monitoring the different energy-relevant parameters on the various points of the grid and for the remote operation and optimization of distribution. Furthermore, a new user profile is derived from this novel infrastructure, known as a prosumer (a user that can produce and consume energy to/from the grid), who can benefit from the features derived from applying advanced analytics and semantic technologies in the rich amount of big data generated by the different subsystems. However, this novel, highly interconnected infrastructure also presents some significant drawbacks, like those related to information security (IS). We provid... [more]
Small-Signal Modeling of Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Converter Considering the Delay Associated to the Leakage Inductance
Diego Ochoa, Antonio Lázaro, Pablo Zumel, Marina Sanz, Jorge Rodriguez de Frutos, Andrés Barrado
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-DC power conversion, injected-absorbed-current method, phase-shifted full-bridge converter, small-signal model, zero-voltage-switching
This paper demonstrates that in the Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge (PSFB) buck-derived converter, there is a random delay associated with the blanking time produced by the leakage inductance. This random delay predicts the additional phase drop that is present in the frequency response of the open-loop audio-susceptibility transfer function when the converter shows a significant blanking time. The existing models of the PSFB converter do not contemplate the delay and gain differences associated to voltage drop produced in the leakage inductor of the transformer. The small-signal model proposed in this paper is based on the combination of two types of analysis: the first analysis consists of obtaining a small-signal model using the average modeling technique and the second analysis consists of studying the natural response of the power converter. The dynamic modeling of the Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge converter, including the random delay, has been validated by simulations and experimental tes... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dissolved oxygen, mass transfer, microalgae, photosynthesis, thin-layer cascade bioreactor
High concentration of dissolved oxygen within microalgae cultures reduces the performance of corresponding microalgae cultivation system (MCS). The main aim of this study is to provide a reliable computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based methodology enabling to simulate two relevant phenomena governing the distribution of dissolved oxygen within MCS: (i) mass transfer through the liquid−air interface and (ii) oxygen evolution due to microalgae photosynthesis including the inhibition by the same dissolved oxygen. On an open thin-layer cascade (TLC) reactor, a benchmark numerical study to assess the oxygen distribution was conducted. While the mass transfer phenomenon is embedded within CFD code ANSYS Fluent, the oxygen evolution rate has to be implemented via user-defined function (UDF). To validate our methodology, experimental data for dissolved oxygen distribution within the 80 meter long open thin-layer cascade reactor are compared against numerical results. Moreover, the consistency... [more]

Robert Kaniowski, Robert Pastuszko
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, microchannel, narrow gap, pool boiling
The paper presents the results of experimental research on pool boiling heat transfer of dielectric liquid FC-72. Measurements were made at atmospheric pressure on open surfaces with microchannels. Heat transfer surfaces, in the form of parallel milled microchannels, were made of copper. The rectangular cross-sectional microchannels were 0.2 to 0.5 mm deep and 0.2 to 0.4 mm wide. The surfaces, compared to a smooth flat surface, provided a five-fold increase in the heat transfer coefficient and a two-fold increase in the critical heat flux. The article analyses the influence of the width and height of the microchannel on the heat transfer process. The maximum heat flux was 271.7 kW/m2, and the highest heat transfer coefficient obtained was 25 kW/m2K. Furthermore, the experimental results were compared with selected correlations for the nucleate pool boiling.
A Probabilistic and Value-Based Planning Approach to Assess the Competitiveness between Gas-Fired and Renewables in Hydro-Dominated Systems: A Brazilian Case Study
Felipe Nazaré, Luiz Barroso, Bernardo Bezerra
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: associated natural gas, co-optimization of energy and reserve, electricity-gas integration, multi-stage stochastic programming, power system expansion
The main challenge with the penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE) in thermal-dominated systems has been the increase in the need for operating reserves, relying on dispatchable and flexible resources. In the case of hydro-dominated systems, the cost-effective flexibility provided by hydro-plants facilitates the penetration of VRE, but the compounded production variability of these resources challenges the integration of baseload gas-fired plants. The Brazilian power system illustrates this situation, in which the development of large associated gas fields economically depends on the operation of gas-fired plants. Given the current competitiveness of VRE, a natural question is the economic value and tradeoffs for expanding the system opting between baseload gas-fired generation and VRE in an already flexible hydropower system. This paper presents a methodology based on a multi-stage and stochastic capacity expansion model to estimate the optimal mix of baseload thermal power pl... [more]

Roman Volkov, Timur Valiullin, Olga Vysokomornaya
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atomization, collision modes, composite liquid fuels, injectors, micro-explosion, nozzle devices, primary and secondary atomization, spaying
This article discusses the atomization of composite liquid fuels. A large group of injectors is considered. A comparative analysis of the atomization characteristics (droplet sizes and velocities, jet opening angles) and the influence of the fuel characteristics (density, viscosity, component composition) and the process parameters (the ratio of the fuel−air mass flow rates, the features of the jet formation) has been carried out. Finally, the most effective types of injectors, which provide for the necessary characteristics of fuel atomization for its combustion, have been determined. The most favorable conditions for the applicability of each type of atomization have been formulated. Possible mechanisms of secondary fragmentation of droplets of composite fuels have been analyzed: those resulting from mutual collisions of droplets in the flux and from the interaction with a solid surface as well as those resulting from thermal overheating in the presence of a phase boundary or a large... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fault Detection, image processing, photovoltaic systems (pv), principal component analysis (PCA), tracking system, two-axis
Photovoltaic power plants nowadays play an important role in the context of energy generation based on renewable sources. With the purpose of obtaining maximum efficiency, the PV modules of these power plants are installed in trackers. However, the mobile structure of the trackers is subject to faults, which can compromise the desired perpendicular position between the PV modules and the brightest point in the sky. So, the diagnosis of a fault in the trackers is fundamental to ensure the maximum energy production. Approaches based on sensors and statistical methods have been researched but they are expensive and time consuming. To overcome these problems, a new method is proposed for the fault diagnosis in the trackers of the PV systems based on a machine learning approach. In this type of approach the developed method can be classified into two major categories: supervised and unsupervised. In accordance with this, to implement the desired fault diagnosis, an unsupervised method based... [more]
Improving Transport Modeling in MESSAGE Energy Planning Model: Vehicle Age Distributions
Eimantas Neniškis, Arvydas Galinis, Egidijus Norvaiša
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: age distribution, energy planning, model, transport, vehicle
In the European Green Deal, EU Commission has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 90% by 2050 compared to the 1990 level. Most likely, transport decarbonization will rely on a rapid expansion of electric and hydrogen vehicle fleet, which would seriously affect not just overall electricity demand, but also the shape of the electricity consumption curve. Consequently, our research focuses on integrated energy and transport modelling when analyzing its development pathways up to 2050 and beyond. This paper describes how already established transport modeling practices can be further improved by differentiating vehicles by age groups and setting vehicle age distributions to improve the representation of vehicle stock, fuel efficiencies and emissions, especially for countries that have non-declining vehicle age distributions. Modeling results using proposed and traditional approaches were compared for the Lithuanian case. It shows that the transport fuel... [more]

Sung Jin Kang, Sun Lee, Seon Ju Lee
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, environmental agreements, gravity model, Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood, technology
We investigated the effect of agreements related to climate change on bilateral trade, using the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) estimator on a large dataset that requires computing high-dimensional fixed effects. This study develops the concordance between commodities based on harmonized systems (HS) and technologies defined by both international and cooperative patent classifications (IPC/CPC). Using the OECD ENV-TECH classification, covering 169 exporting countries and 179 importing countries worldwide from 1991 to 2019, we determined the relationship between HS commodities and IPC/CPC climate change technologies. The main findings show that, first, the Kyoto Protocol has increased international bilateral trade in the climate change industry, while the Montreal Protocol has led to the opposite effect. In addition, the impact of environmental stringency on international bilateral trade in climate-related industries was negative and significant, refuting the Porter Hypothesis... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct injection gasoline spray, flame propagation, Large-Eddy simulations, mixed-mode combustion, mixture preparation, soot
Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of a gasoline spray, where the mixture was ignited rapidly during or after injection, were performed in comparison to a previous experimental study with quantitative flame motion and soot formation data [SAE 2020-01-0291] and an accompanying Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) simulation at the same conditions. The present study reveals major shortcomings in common RANS combustion modeling practices that are significantly improved using LES at the conditions of the study, specifically for the phenomenon of rapid ignition in the highly turbulent, stratified mixture. At different ignition timings, benchmarks for the study include spray mixing and evaporation, flame propagation after ignition, and soot formation in rich mixtures. A comparison of the simulations and the experiments showed that the LES with Dynamic Structure turbulence were able to capture correctly the liquid penetration length, and to some extent, spray collapse demonstrated in the experime... Testing the Impact of Braking Algorithm Parameters on Acceleration and Braking Distance for a Suspended Monorail with Regard to Acceptable Travel Speed in Hard Coal Mines
Jerzy Świder, Kamil Szewerda, Krzysztof Herbuś, Jerzy Jura
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: braking algorithm, mining industry, numerical simulations, suspended monorails, travel speed
Increasing the maximum speed limit of suspended monorails, which became a very popular means of auxiliary transport, is one of the aspects of improving the efficiency of work in underground coal mines. It is especially important to enable higher (than allowed by the law) travel speed, when moving the crew to and from the workplace, which is often very distant from the shaft, and can take more than one hour of travel. Increasing this speed will make it possible to extend the effective working time of miners, which should have a positive impact on the economics of the mine. However, driving at a higher speed is also associated with increased risk of a negative impact of dynamic overload to people, e.g., during emergency braking of the suspended monorail. The concept of sequential emergency braking was developed in order to avoid excessive deceleration affecting passengers and the operator of the monorail, as well as to minimize the dynamic loads acting on the rail suspensions and on the... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric train, finite element analysis, hybrid excited linear flux switching machine, rope-less elevator
Linear Flux Switching Machines (LFSMs) possess the capability to generate adhesive thrust force, thus problems associated with conventional rotatory electric machines and mechanical conversion assemblies can be eliminated. Additionally, the unique features of high force/power density, efficiency, and a robust secondary structure make LFSMs a suitable candidate for linear motion applications. However, deficiency of controllable air-gap flux, risk of PM demagnetization, and increasing cost of rare earth PM materials in case of PMLFSMs, and inherent low thrust force capability of Field Excited LFSMs compels researchers to investigate new hybrid topologies. In this paper, a novel Double-Sided Hybrid Excited LFSM (DSHELFSM) with all three excitation sources, i.e., PMs, DC, and AC windings confined to short moving primary and segmented secondary providing short flux paths is designed, investigated, and optimized. Secondly, unequal primary tooth width optimization and additional end-teeth at... [more]
Controlled Energy Flow in Z-Source Inverters

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: impedance network, quasi-Z-source, voltage distortions, voltage source inverter, Z-source
This paper proposes a method to reduce the output voltage distortions in voltage source inverters (VSI) working with impedance networks. The three main reasons for the voltage distortions include a discontinuous current in the coils of the impedance network, the double output frequency harmonics in the VSI’s voltage output caused by insufficient capacitance in the impedance network, and voltage drops on the bridge switches during the shoot-through time. The first of these distortions can be reduced by increasing the current of the impedance network when the output VSI current is low. This method requires storing energy in the battery connected to the DC link of the VSI during the “non-shoot through” time. Furthermore, this solution can also be used when the Z-source inverter works with a photovoltaic cell to help it attain a maximum power point. The Z-source inverter is essentially a voltage source inverter with the Z-source in the input. In this paper, the theory behind basic impedanc... [more]
Comparison of Machine Learning Methods for Image Reconstruction Using the LSTM Classifier in Industrial Electrical Tomography

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical tomography, industrial tomography, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, Machine Learning, neural networks
Electrical tomography is a non-invasive method of monitoring the interior of objects, which is used in various industries. In particular, it is possible to monitor industrial processes inside reactors and tanks using tomography. Tomography enables real-time observation of crystals or gas bubbles growing in a liquid. However, obtaining high-resolution tomographic images is problematic because it involves solving the so-called ill-posed inverse problem. Noisy input data cause problems, too. Therefore, the use of appropriate hardware solutions to eliminate this phenomenon is necessary. An important cause of obtaining accurate tomographic images may also be the incorrect selection of algorithmic methods used to convert the measurements into the output images. In a dynamically changing environment of a tank reactor, selecting the optimal algorithmic method used to create a tomographic image becomes an optimization problem. This article presents the machine learning method’s original concept... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: automotive industry, body shop, control system, HVAC, Machine Learning
The alternative control concept using emission from the machine has the potential to reduce energy consumption in HVAC systems. This paper reports on a study of alternative inputs for a control system of HVAC using machine learning algorithms, based on data that are gathered in a welding area of an automotive factory. A data set of CO2, fine dust, temperatures and air velocity was logged using continuous and gravimetric measurements during two typical production weeks. The HVAC system was reduced gradually each day to trigger fluctuations of emission. The data were used to train and test various machine learning models using different statistical indices, consequently to choose a best fit model. Different models were tested and the Long Short-Term Memory model showed the best result, with 0.821 discrepancy on R2. The gravimetric samples proved that the reduction of air exchange rate does not correlate to escalation of fine dust linearly, which means one cannot rely on just gravimetric... [more]
A Survey Data Approach for Determining the Probability Values of Vehicle-to-Grid Service Provision
Krzysztof Zagrajek
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, smart grids, vehicle-to-everything, vehicle-to-grid
One of the key aspects of vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G) is the analysis of uncertainty in electric vehicle user behavior. Correct estimation of the amount of available energy from electric vehicles that are expected to provide ancillary services to the electricity system operator or to secure the end user’s demand is essential to design these services in an appropriate way. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the probabilities of V2G service performance for different scenarios. This paper presents the author’s approach to determining the values of V2G service provision probabilities using survey data. It was found that estimating these values using simulation and forecasting tools makes sense when the coefficients resulting from survey responses are used as initial data. Thus, the paper also presents the results of the surveys that were conducted. As the results from the simulations show, the values of the probabilities of V2G services are not high, which should induce future oper... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: aeration efficiency, micro-perforated diffuser, oxygen mass transfer, oxygen transfer efficiency
We studied new micro-perforated diffuser concepts for the aeration process in wastewater treatment plants and evaluated their aeration efficiency. These are micro-perforated plate diffusers with orifice diameters of 30 µm, 50 µm and 70 µm and a micro-perforated tube diffuser with an orifice diameter of 50 µm. The oxygen transfer of the diffuser concepts is tested in clean water, and it is compared with commercial aerators from the literature. The micro-perforated tube diffuser and micro-perforated plate diffusers outperform the commercial membrane diffusers by up to 44% and 20%, respectively, with regard to the oxygen transfer efficiency. The most relevant reason for the improved oxygen transfer is the fine bubble aeration with bubble sizes as small as 1.8 mm. Furthermore, the more homogenous cross-sectional bubble distribution of the micro-perforated tube diffuser has a beneficial effect on the gas mass transfer due to less bubble coalescence. However, the pressure drop of micro-perfo... [more]
