Adsorption of Reactive Dye onto Uçá Crab Shell (Ucides cordatus): Scale-Up and Comparative Studies
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, crab shell, dye, scale-up
The growing interest in using low-cost methods that use natural sources makes the study of adsorption processes increasingly frequent and common. Thus, the use of uçá crab shell (Ucides cordatus) in the adsorption of reactive dye (reactive blue 222) was studied in two systems (S1 and S2) in a finite bath, with a scale-up of 12 times and considering different forms of agitation. The biosorbent material was previously characterized from FTIR and EDX spectroscopies, SEM, physical adsorption of N2, and point of zero charge. The kinetic study allowed modeling the experimental data and defining the equilibrium time for the S1 system as 400 min, and the S2 system as 360 min. The equilibrium adsorption capacities are 3.623 mg·g−1 (S1) and 4.191 mg·g−1 (S2). The pseudo-second-order (PSO) model best described the experimental data. The favorable multilayer adsorption was confirmed for the isothermal analysis, and the Freundlich and Sips models represented the experimental data of S1 and S2, resp... [more]

Forecasting Water Quality Index in Groundwater Using Artificial Neural Network
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, groundwater, prediction, regressions, water quality index
Groundwater quality monitoring in the vicinity of drilling sites is crucial for the protection of water resources. Selected physicochemical parameters of waters were marked in the study. The water was collected from 19 wells located close to a shale gas extraction site. The water quality index was determined from the obtained parameters. A secondary objective of the study was to test the capacity of the artificial neural network (ANN) methods to model the water quality index in groundwater. The number of ANN input parameters was optimized and limited to seven, which was derived using a multiple regression model. Subsequently, using the stepwise regression method, models with ever fewer variables were tested. The best parameters were obtained for a network with five input neurons (electrical conductivity, pH as well as calcium, magnesium and sodium ions), in addition to five neurons in the hidden layer. The results showed that the use of the parameters is a convenient approach to modeli... [more]

A Two-Stage Short-Term Load Forecasting Method Using Long Short-Term Memory and Multilayer Perceptron
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: hybrid model, long short-term memory, multilayer perceptron, sequence-to-sequence, short-term load forecast
Load forecasting is an essential task in the operation management of a power system. Electric power companies utilize short-term load forecasting (STLF) technology to make reasonable power generation plans. A forecasting model with low prediction errors helps reduce operating costs and risks for the operators. In recent years, machine learning has become one of the most popular technologies for load forecasting. In this paper, a two-stage STLF model based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP), which improves the forecasting accuracy over the entire time horizon, is proposed. In the first stage, a sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) architecture, which can handle a multi-sequence of input to extract more features of historical data than that of single sequence, is used to make multistep predictions. In the second stage, the MLP is used for residual modification by perceiving other information that the LSTM cannot. To construct the model, we collected the electrical... [more]

Air-Gap Flux Oriented Vector Control Based on Reduced-Order Flux Observer for EESM
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrically excited synchronous motor, first-order difference method, parameter variation, reduced order flux observer
Electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) has the characteristics of high order, nonlinear and strong coupling, so it is difficult to be controlled. However, it has the advantages of adjustable power factor, high efficiency, and high precision torque control, so it is widely used in high-power applications. The accuracy of a flux observer influences the speed control system of EESM. Based on state observer in modern control theory and electrical excitation synchronous machine state equation, a reduced-order flux observer is designed. Using the first-order difference method and forward bilinear transformation method, the reduced-order flux observer is discrete, and the stability of the motor system is analyzed. The analysis shows that the stability of the system using the bilinear transformation method is better than that using the first order forward difference method. In motor operation, motor parameters will be affected by the factors of temperature, magnetic saturation, and moto... [more]

Complex Design Method of Filtration Station Considering Harmonic Components
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AC traction systems, harmonics, power harmonic filters, total harmonic distortion, traction substation
The paper deals with a new methodology for calculating the filter parameters. The basis is respect for the fact that the real filter current consists of other harmonic components, which filter is tuned. The proposed methodology was used to design filters for traction substation 25 kV/50 Hz. The operation of the locomotives in the AC supply systems of 25 kV/50 Hz leads to a rising of higher order harmonic currents. Due to the 1-phase supply system, these are mainly the 3rd and 5th harmonics. By simulation and subsequent measurement of the proposed traction power station filters the proposed methodology was verified. Thus, the filter design can also be used for filter compensating stations of the standard 3-phase distribution network. The described method presents an optimal filter design without unnecessary oversizing. This fact reduces the size and cost of the filter. It is shown that it is possible to design a filter that meets the requirements for power quality under extreme load and... [more]

The Data-Driven Modeling of Pressure Loss in Multi-Batch Refined Oil Pipelines with Drag Reducer Using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Network
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: drag reducer, long short-term memory (LSTM) network, multi-batch refined oil pipelines, pressure loss
Due to the addition of the drag reducer in refined oil pipelines for increasing the pipeline throughput as well as reducing energy consumption, the classical method based on the Darcy-Weisbach Formula for precise pressure loss calculation presents a large error. Additionally, the way to accurately calculate the pressure loss of the refined oil pipeline with the drag reducer is in urgent need. The accurate pressure loss value can be used as the input parameter of pump scheduling or batch scheduling models of refined oil pipelines, which can ensure the safe operation of the pipeline system, achieving the goal of energy-saving and cost reduction. This paper proposes the data-driven modeling of pressure loss for multi-batch refined oil pipelines with the drag reducer in high accuracy. The multi-batch sequential transportation process and the differences in the physical properties between different kinds of refined oil in the pipelines are taken into account. March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: complex function, high sidewall cavern, hydropower station, splitting failure, strain gradient
With the rapid development of society, the number of hydropower projects has increased. During the construction of these projects, due to excavation-induced unloading, the high sidewalls of the hydropower station are often subject to splitting failure, which produces many adverse effects on the construction of the cavern. In order to reveal the formation mechanism of splitting failure of hydropower stations, based on the strain gradient theory and elasto-plastic damage theory, we proposed an elasto-plastic damage softening model. Using the ODE45 program in MATLAB, we solved the numerical solution of displacement and stress of circular cavern based on our proposed elastoplastic damage model. Then, we apply the complex function method and use the Schwarz−Christoffel integral formula to obtain the mapping function from the outer domain of the high sidewall cavern to the outer domain of the unit circle. Finally, the elastic-plastic region and displacement distribution of the high sidewall... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: classification, energy management, heat exchanger, heat recovery, HVAC, review
Energy has become the backbone of humanities daily activities. Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), which consume around 39% of energy in the residential sector, have turned into an essential constituent for providing fresh air, especially after COVD-19, not only in hospitals but also in any simple construction. Thus, decreasing this percentage or recovering part of the energy lost is an essential issue in today’s energy management scenarios. In this context, the present manuscript suggests a comprehensive review, classifications, critical analysis, and potential recommendations for energy recovery in air conditioning systems. It classifies energy recovery into two main categories: using lost energy for external uses, such as heating domestic water, or with other devices; and using lost energy for internal uses, such as the hot airflow which can be reused again for increasing efficiency of HVAC. In addition, this paper presents a summary of previous research and u... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clouds, forecasting, optical flow, persistence, satellite, solar
Solar energy production is affected by the attenuation of incoming irradiance from underlying clouds. Often, improvements in the short-term predictability of irradiance using satellite irradiance models can assist grid operators in managing intermittent solar-generated electricity. In this paper, we develop and test a satellite irradiance model with short-term prediction capabilities using cloud motion vectors. Near-real time visible images from Himawari-8 satellite are used to derive cloud motion vectors using optical flow estimation techniques. The cloud motion vectors are used for the advection of pixels at future time horizons for predictions of irradiance at the surface. Firstly, the pixels are converted to cloud index using the historical satellite data accounting for clear, cloudy and cloud shadow pixels. Secondly, the cloud index is mapped to the clear sky index using a historical fitting function from the respective sites. Thirdly, the predicated all-sky irradiance is derived... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: different batteries, integrated renewable energy system, off-grid microgrid, optimization techniques
Several families in India live in remote places with no access to grid-connected power supply due to their remoteness. The study area chosen from the Indian state of Odisha does not have an electrical power supply due to its distant location. As a result, this study analyzed the electrification process using Renewable Energy (RE) resources available in the locality. However, these RE resources are limited by their dependency on weather conditions and time. So, a robust battery storage system is needed for a continuous power supply. Hence, the Nickel Iron (Ni-Fe), Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lead Acid (LA) battery technologies have been analyzed to identify a battery technology that is both technologically and economically viable. Using the available RE resources in the study area, such as photovoltaic and biomass energy resources, as well as the various battery technologies, three configurations have been modelled, such as Photovoltaic Panels (PVP)/Biomass Generator(BIOMG)/BATTERY(Ni-Fe),... The article presents the possibilities of effective management of lignocellulosic waste by including it in the circular economy. The pyrolysis process was chosen as the thermal conversion method. This approach, due to a high flexibility of the obtained products, better quality of the solid residue (char), and the lower emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, e.g., SO2 and NOx, is a competitive solution compared to combustion process. Wood waste from alder and pine were analyzed. As part of laboratory tests, the elementary composition was determined, i.e., C, H, N, S, and O. The pyrolysis process was carried out at a temperature of 600 °C on an experimental stand for the conversion of solid fuels in a stationary bed. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: COVID-19, emerging economy, Energy Efficiency, energy policy, energy security, energy sustainability, fluctuations, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Ukraine
This paper proposes methodological approaches to assessing the impact of renewable energy and energy efficiency development on emerging economies’ energy security. It is suggested to supplement the current methodology for assessing energy security with the decoupling index of the renewable energy financial burden on the state budget, the energy efficiency decoupling index, the households’ energy poverty indicator, the index of capacity development for balancing electricity generation volumes, and the energy fluctuations indicator. These indices provide a comprehensive assessment of energy security under the latest challenges. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic in the Ukrainian energy sector led to the “green and coal paradox”, when the government decided to keep green electricity generation but limit nuclear generation. It required increased flexible capacities (thermal generation) and led to a rise in electricity prices and environmental pollution. Forecasting energy fluctuations with Butter... [more]

A Review of the Current State of Technology of Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: capacitive coupling, capacitive wireless power transfer, compensation networks, converters, electric coupling, electric fields, resonance, wireless power transfer
Wireless power transfer allows the transfer of energy from a transmitter to a receiver without electrical connections. Compared to galvanic charging, it displays several advantages, including improved user experience, higher durability and better mobility. As a result, both consumer and industrial markets for wireless charging are growing rapidly. The main market share of wireless power is based on the principle of inductive power transfer, a technology based on coupled coils that transfer energy via varying magnetic fields. However, inductive charging has some disadvantages, such as high cost, heat dissipation, and bulky inductors. A promising alternative is capacitive wireless power transfer that utilizes a varying electric field as medium to transfer energy. Its wireless link consists of conductive plates. The purpose of this paper is to review the state of the art, link the theoretical concepts to practical cases and to indicate where further research is required to take next steps... [more]

Criticality Analysis and Maintenance of Solar Tower Power Plants by Integrating the Artificial Intelligence Approach
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, bayesian network, criticality analysis, maintenance, solar tower power plants
Maintenance of solar tower power plants (STPP) is very important to ensure production continuity. However, random and non-optimal maintenance can increase the intervention cost. In this paper, a new procedure, based on the criticality analysis, was proposed to improve the maintenance of the STPP. This procedure is the combination of three methods, which are failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), Bayesian network and artificial intelligence. The FMECA is used to estimate the criticality index of the different elements of STPP. Moreover, corrections and improvements were introduced on the criticality index values based on the expert advice method. The modeling and the simulation of the FMECA estimations incorporating the expert advice method corrections were performed using the Bayesian network. The artificial neural network is used to predicate the criticality index of the STPP exploiting the database obtained from the Bayesian network simulations. The results showed a g... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inter-zonal exchange, Italian wholesale power market, Merit Order Effect, multivariate regression, solar power integration, wind power integration
This paper assesses the impact of increasing wind and solar power generation on zonal market prices in the Italian electricity market from 2015 to 2019, employing a multivariate regression model. A significant aspect to be considered is how the additional wind and solar generation brings changes in the inter-zonal export and import flows. We constructed a zonal dataset consisting of electricity price, demand, wind and solar generation, net input flow, and gas price. In the first and second steps of this study, the impact of additional wind and solar generation that is distributed across zonal borders is calculated separately based on an empirical approach. Then, the Merit Order Effect of the intermittent renewable energy sources is quantified in every six geographical zones of the Italian day-ahead market. The results generated by the multivariate regression model reveal that increasing wind and solar generation decreases the daily zonal electricity price. Therefore, the Merit Order Ef... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deliverability evaluation, fractal, fracture network, staged fractured horizontal wells, tight oil reservoirs
At present, the existing deliverability evaluation models mainly consider the impact of specific factors on production, and the description of the complex fracture network structure primarily remains at the stage of an ideal dual-pore medium with uniform distribution. However, this cannot reflect the actual fracture network structure and fluid flow law of fractured horizontal wells. Thus, in this paper, a non-uniform fracture network structure is proposed considering the influence of the threshold pressure gradient and stress sensitivity characteristics on the production performance of horizontal wells. The stress sensitivity and the fractal theory are combined to characterize the permeability of the complex fracture network, and a three-zone compound unsteady deliverability model for staged fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs is successfully developed. Pipe height in cylindrical neutron moderator is an important factor to flow pattern, temperature distribution and even the neutron characters. In this paper, the steady-state thermal analysis of cold neutron moderator is carrying out with different heights, conjugated heat transfer method and one-way coupled with a neutron transfer software. The different pipe heights, which is the jet-to-surface distances (H/D = 0.5~6), were compared using a 2D moderator model. The results show that vortex size and velocity gradient from container wall to vortex center vary with H/D, the center of recirculation zone nearly remain constant, and heat transfer effect is weakened on the target bottom surface. With H/D increasing, the velocity at bottom target surface is progressively decreased, and cooling effect is poor, leading to the rise in temperature.
