Subject: Environment
Keywords: analysis of the scenario, digital technologies, energy transition, factor analysis, fossil energy, renewable energy sources, sustainable energy development
In the next 20 years, the fossil energy must become a guarantor of the sustainable development of the energy sector for future generations. Significant threats represent hurdles in this transition. This study identified current global trends in the energy sector and the prospects for the development of energy until 2035. The importance of risk assessment in scenario forecasting based on expert judgments was proven. Three contrasting scenarios, #StayHome, #StayAlone, and #StayEffective, for the development of fossil energy, all based on comprehensive analysis of global risks by expert survey and factor analysis, were developed. It was concluded that fossil energy is mandatory with integration of advanced technologies at every stage of the production of traditional energy and of renewable energy as an integral part of the modern energy sector. Based on the results of the study, nine ambitious programs for the development of sustainable energy are presented. They require the creation and... [more]
The Importance of Under-Keel Sound Velocity Sensor in Measuring Water Depth with Multibeam Echosounder
Artur Grządziel
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multibeam echosounder, sound velocity sensor, water depth measurements
The basic and most commonly used application of modern multibeam echosounders (MBES) is the bathymetric survey. Surface sound velocity errors introduce errors on beam steering angles and consequently errors in depth and position values. Due to systematic malfunction and troubleshooting of the sound velocity sensor (SVS) on board Polish Navy hydrographic ship Arctowski, attempts to solve the problem were made. All the inspections and cleaning of the sensor were performed with the use of divers or while staying in the shipyard. Diving work did not always bring the expected results and periodic ship docking was quite expensive. The article shows the importance of the SVS sensor in bathymetric measurements using multibeam echosounder. Selected problems of the sensor operation and temporary solutions were presented. The paper provides a description of practical solutions implemented aboard the navy ship Arctowski. The idea and implementation were the result of the author’s experience gained... [more]
The Power of Co-Creation in the Energy Transition—DART Model in Citizen Energy Communities Projects

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: citizen energy community, co-creation, DART model, housing cooperative, value co-creation
Successful energy transformation is interconnected with greater citizenry participation as prosumers. The search for novel solutions to implement the transition to renewable energy that will neutralize the barriers to this process, e.g., the reluctance of citizens to get involved, lack of trust in decision-makers and lack of co-ownership of energy projects, is inevitable as a part of the bottom-up process. Energy communities have vast potential to scale up Renewable Energy projects. Due to the fact that in Poland, establishing citizen energy communities in the cities is not allowed, the key success factor of energy transformation is to engage housing cooperatives and other housing communities in this process. A similar legal framework prevents communities from establishing themselves in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The research problem of this paper is to identify determinants of the co-creation process in Renewable Energy project activation at the housing cooperative level. The aim... [more]
Online SOC Estimation Based on Simplified Electrochemical Model for Lithium-Ion Batteries Considering Current Bias
Longxing Wu, Kai Liu, Hui Pang, Jiamin Jin
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lithium-ion batteries, proportional–integral observer, sensor bias, simplified electrochemical model, state of charge
State of Charge (SOC) is essential for a smart Battery Management System (BMS). Traditional SOC estimation methods of lithium-ion batteries are usually conducted using battery equivalent circuit models (ECMs) and the impact of current sensor bias on SOC estimation is rarely considered. For this reason, this paper proposes an online SOC estimation based on a simplified electrochemical model (EM) for lithium-ion batteries considering sensor bias. In EM-based SOC estimation structure, the errors from the current sensor bias are addressed by proportional−integral observer. Then, the accuracy of the proposed EM-based SOC estimation is validated under different operating conditions. The results indicate that the proposed method has good performance and high accuracy in SOC estimation for lithium-ion batteries, which facilitates the on-board application in advanced BMS.

Keywords: all-electric ship, battery energy storage system (BESS), DC shipboard power system, integrated power system (IPS), pure electric propulsion ship, shipboard microgrid
With the strengthening of international environmental regulations, many studies on the integrated electric propulsion systems applicable to eco-friendly ship are being conducted. However, few studies have been performed to establish a guide line for the overall pure electric propulsion ship design. Therefore, this paper introduces the comprehensive design of DC shipboard power system for pure electric propulsion ship based on battery energy storage system (BESS). To design and configure the pure electric propulsion ship, 2 MW propulsion car ferry was assumed and adopted to be the target vessel in this paper. In order to design the overall system, a series of design processes, such as the decision of the ship operation profile, BESS capacity selection, configuration of the power conversion systems for propulsion, battery charging/discharging procedures, classification of system operation modes, and analysis of the efficiency, were considered. The proposed efficient design and analysis o... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, Chlorella sp., Cyanobacteria, growth, physiological activity, Salix viminalis L., torrefaction
The effect of foliar application of Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures on physiological activity, element composition, development and biomass weight of basket willow (Salix viminalis L.) and the possibility to prepare biofuel from it in the fortification process was studied. Triple foliar plant spraying with non-sonicated monocultures of Cyanobacteria (Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105) and Chlorella sp. exhibited a considerably progressive impact on metabolic activity and development of plants. This biofertilization increased cytomembrane impermeability, the amount of chlorophyll in plants, photosynthesis productivity and transpiration, as well as degree of stomatal opening associated with a decreased concentration of intercellular CO2, in comparison to control (treatments with water, Bio-Algeen S90 or with environmental sample). The applied strains markedly increased the element content (N, P, K) in shoots and the productivity of crucial growth enzymes... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electricity generation, electricity market, locational emissions, marginal emission factors
Electricity generation is tied to various environmental and social consequences. In prior studies, the environmental emissions associated with electricity generation were calculated using average emission factors (AEFs) whose use is different from the method of marginal emission factors (MEFs) in regard to the geographical redefinition and new policies applied to the US electricity grid in 2013. Moreover, the amount of emissions being released at a generation site depends on the technology of the generating units; it is important to take into account this factor as well. Thus, this paper provides comparisons between different historical and real-time approaches of estimating MEFs (i.e., CO2, SO2, and NOx) for the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) electricity region. The region under study is the same for all the scenarios, although the comparative time frames are different. The study is focused on the similarities observed in the data trends and system behaviors. We carry... [more]
Reducing Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Meet Climate Targets—A Comprehensive Quantification and Reasonable Options
Christoph Kern, Andreas Jess
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate policies, energy transition, greenhouse gas emissions
A model is presented which covers the global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions) and the energy consumption (fuels, electricity) in five sectors of end users, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture, and fugitive emissions. The electricity sector is also considered, but the associated GHG emissions are reallocated to the five end users. Different GHG reduction measures were calculated ranging from substitution of coal for electricity generation by renewables, electrification of road transport and buildings, restructuring of the sector industry to finally a 50% reduction of both food waste and meat consumption. To elucidate the consequences of global warming, future emission scenarios were also incorporated. One major conclusion is that the world can only reach the 2-degree climate target if electricity is only produced by renewables, and if transportation, buildings, and the industry are completely electrified by 2050. Compared to today, the electricity production by renewable... [more]

Junci Cao, Hua Yan, Dong Li, Yu Wang, Weili Li
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite volume method, fluid field, induction motor, stator ventilation, temperature field, variable cross-section
The performance of an induction motor, a core component of the high-speed train, is of critical importance to the safety of the train. As a result of limited space in the train and the motor’s high-power density, motor heating poses a grave threat to its service life and operational safety. In this study, a 600-kW high-speed train induction motor model was established and its temperature field calculated by the finite volume method. To optimize the heat dissipation and further reduce the motor temperature rise, a variable cross-section stator ventilation hole was proposed and its influence on the wind velocity and temperature rise comprehensively studied. After comparing the cooling effect of the linear and nonlinear variable cross-section of the ventilation hole, the influence of the cross-sectional diameter and the radial position of the ventilation hole on the temperature rise was explored. Finally, the most favorable scheme for motor heat dissipation was determined.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: contaminant emissions, controls, indoor air quality, residential, simulations, smart ventilation, zoning
This study examined the use of zoned ventilation systems using a coupled CONTAM/EnergyPlus model for new California dwellings. Several smart control strategies were developed with a target of halving ventilation-related energy use, largely through reducing dwelling ventilation rates based on zone occupancy. The controls were evaluated based on the annual energy consumption relative to continuously operating non-zoned, code-compliant mechanical ventilation systems. The systems were also evaluated from an indoor air quality perspective using the equivalency approach, where the annual personal concentration of a contaminant for a control strategy is compared to the personal concentration that would have occurred using a continuously operating, non-zoned system. Individual occupant personal concentrations were calculated for the following contaminants of concern: moisture, CO2, particles, and a generic contaminant. Zonal controls that saved energy by reducing outside airflow achieved typic... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dimensional analysis, Energy Efficiency, flow rate regulation, pump systems
This paper presents a method for evaluating the energy efficiency of pump systems used to transport fluids .It is mainly scientifically applied and engineering-applied in nature and aims to propose a new approach (method) to researchers in their study of the energy efficiency of such systems. By applying the well-known scientific method of Dimensional Analysis (Buckingham π-theorem), dimensionless complexes (π-criterions and their relevant equations, which are original (innovative) and are offered for the first time in the scientific literature), used in accomplishing an energy assessment and analysis of such systems, are obtained. The criterion ∏1 = ev/ρgD represents specific energy consumption in kWh/m3 for a given pipe system with an exemplary diameter D. The criterion ∏2 = Q/[n(Hp − Hst)D2] represents a generalized parameter which is characterized by the selected method of flow rate (Q) regulation for a pump system with given static head Hst—by changing the speed of rotation (VFD,... Effect of Adding Emulsifier to Fuel on Work Efficiency and Gas Turbine Emissions
Paweł Niszczota, Marian Gieras
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, CO emission, emulsifier, emulsion fuels, gas turbine, NOx emission, surfactant
In an effort to reduce the emissivity of transport and energy, numerous studies are being carried out on the impact of the combustion of alternative fuels on the emission and operating parameters of propulsion and energy units. One of the observed trends is the use of emulsion fuels. The addition of an emulsifier to an emulsion fuel reduces the interfacial tension between two liquids, which allows obtaining an emulsion fuel with the expected stability. The research conducted on self-ignition engines and gas turbines (TG) does not give an unambiguous answer as to the influence of the use of fuel-water emulsion on CO emissions. One of the reasons for the discrepancy in the obtained results may be the type and amount of the emulsifier used in the emulsion fuel. Tests were carried out on the GTM-120 gas turbine to compare the operating parameters and emissions between the cases in which TG was supplied with three fuel mixtures—the standard fuel for TG (DF) and DF with 2% and 5% emulsifier... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic transient analysis, ground-return admittance, ground-return impedance, lightning, transmission lines
This paper evaluates the influence of frequency-dependent soil conductivity and permittivity in the transient responses of single- and double-circuit transmission lines including the ground wires subjected to lightning strikes. We use Nakagawa’s approach to compute the ground-return impedance and admittance matrices where the frequency-dependent soil is modeled using Alípio and Visacro’s model. We compare some elements of these matrices with those calculated by Carson’s approach which assumes the frequency constant. Results show that a significant difference can be obtained in high resistive soils for these elements in impedance and admittance matrices. Then, we compute the transient responses for single- and double-circuit lines with ground wires located above soils of 500, 1000, 5000, and 10,000 Ω·m considering the frequency constant and frequency-dependent parameters generated for two lightning strikes (subsequent stroke and Gaussian pulse). We demonstrate that the inclusion of freq... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: automatic resonance compensation, flexible coil, magnetic resonance coupling, wireless power transfer (WPT)
With the recent proliferation of mobile and wearable devices, wireless power transfer (WPT) has gained attention as an up-and-coming technology to charge these devices. In particular, WPT via magnetic resonance coupling has attracted considerable interest for day-to-day applications since it is harmless to the human body and has relatively long transmission distance. However, it was difficult to be installed into environment (e.g., utensils and furniture) and flexible objects in the living space since the use of flexible coils leads to the decrease in transmission efficiency due to the collapse of the resonance caused by coil deformation. Therefore, this study proposes an automatic resonance compensation system that automatically compensates the inductance variation caused by coil deformation using a circuit that can electronically control the equivalent capacitance (a capacity control circuit), and thereby maintains the resonant state. An experiment was conducted to verify whether the... [more]

In the paper, first, a wide review of proposed scenarios on the penetration of EVs at international and national level and available data on local automotive transport are presented, as a preliminary study for the definition of reference scenarios for the local context. Then, the proposed methodology is presented and applied to the specific case study. Finally, a prelimina... [more]
Combination of b-Fuels and e-Fuels—A Technological Feasibility Study
Katrin Salbrechter, Teresa Schubert
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, catalytic methanation, gasification, power-to-gas, synthetic natural gas
The energy supply in Austria is significantly based on fossil natural gas. Due to the necessary decarbonization of the heat and energy sector, a switch to a green substitute is necessary to limit CO2 emissions. Especially innovative concepts such as power-to-gas establish the connection between the storage of volatile renewable energy and its conversion into green gases. In this paper, different methanation strategies are applied on syngas from biomass gasification. The investigated syngas compositions range from traditional steam gasification, sorption-enhanced reforming to the innovative CO2 gasification. As the producer gases show different compositions regarding the H2/COx ratio, three possible methanation strategies (direct, sub-stoichiometric and over-stoichiometric methanation) are defined and assessed with technological evaluation tools for possible future large-scale set-ups consisting of a gasification, an electrolysis and a methanation unit. Due to its relative high share of... [more]
Investigation into Yaw Motion Influence of Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine on Wake Flow Using LBM-LES

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complicated flow CFD, dynamic yaw, MRT-LBM, near wake, overall aerodynamic performance, wind turbine
The dynamic yaw motion of the wind turbine will affect the overall aerodynamic performance of the impeller and the corresponding wake flow, but the current research on this issue is inadequate. Thus, it is very necessary to study the complicated near-wake aerodynamic behaviors during the yaw process and the closely related blade aerodynamic characteristics. This work utilized the multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LBM) model to investigate the integral aerodynamic performance characteristics of the specified impeller and the dynamic changes in the near wake under a sine yawing process, in which the normalized result is adopted to facilitate data comparison and understanding. Moreover, considering the complexity of the wake flows, the large eddy simulation (LES) and wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity (WALE) model are also used in this investigation. The related results indicate that the degree of stability of tip spiral wake in the dynamic yaw condition is inversely related to... [more]

Wei Huang, Jiming Ma, Xinlei Guo, Huokun Li, Jiazhen Li, Gang Wang
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: sensitivity analysis, small oscillation stability, surge tank, throttled orifice, velocity head
Surge tanks (STs) are important facilities for ensuring the safety of hydropower stations. Reducing the ST size under the premise of ensuring stable mass oscillations within the ST is the main issue. First, according to the basic equations of the mass oscillation for a hydropower station with an ST, a novel expression of the critical stability section of an ST is deduced considering the velocity head and throttle loss. Then, the sensitivity of each influencing factor of the proposed stability criterion is analyzed. Ultimately, through the simulation of small oscillation transients in two case studies, the water level oscillations (WLOs) in an ST based on three stability criteria are compared. The results show that a 20% smaller ST in a hydropower station may result in 10.4% larger oscillations and a 60% smaller ST in a pumped storage power station may result in 14.3% larger oscillations. Compared with the Thoma criterion and the Chinese specification criterion, the stability criterion... [more]
A Multivariate Load Trading Optimization Method for Energy Internet Based on LSTM and Gaming Theory

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AI, hybrid game, multivariate load, orderly power consumption
Energy Internet is a complex nonlinear system. There are many stakeholders in the load trading market, which is usually regarded as a multi-player gaming. Although gaming theory has been introduced to solve Multivariate Load trading problems, different conditions should be considered to accurately optimize the multivariate load trading problem. For example, the selling side needs to reduce the reserve capacity and improve profits, but the consumer side needs to reduce costs and minimize the impact on its own electricity consumption. These contradictory conditions require multiple Nash equilibrium to achieve obviously. To address this issue, a unified architecture of the power system cloud trading is constructed in this paper, which is combined with the multiple load classification of the power system. In addition, according to the power market operation mechanism, a price-guided multivariate load trading game strategy is designed. More importantly, a multivariate load trading optimizat... [more]

Keywords: Bismuth Iron Oxide, defects, Flame Spray Pyrolysis, mullite, oxygen evolution reaction, perovskite, photocatalysis
Bi-Fe oxides are stable materials with potential photocatalytic activity under solar light photons. So far, however the photocatalytic potential of pure-phase nanosized mullite-Bi2Fe4O9 has not been studied. Usually, synthesis of pure-phase nanosized mullite-Bi2Fe4O9 is hampered by co-formation with perovskite BiFeO3. Herein we demonstrate that pure-phase mullite-Bi2Fe4O9 nanoparticles prepared by Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) technology are highly efficient O2 production photocatalysts, achieving >1500 μmol g−1h−1. This outperforms all -so far reported- O2 production Bi-Fe-O photocatalysts. We present an FSP-based process for production of a versatile Bi-Fe-O platform, that can be easily optimized to obtain 100% mullite-Bi2Fe4O9 or 100% perovskite-BiFeO3 or their heterojunctions. The phase-evolution of the Bi-Fe-O materials has been studied by XPS, Raman, and EPR spectroscopies. Short post-FSP annealing process impacts the photoactivity of the BiFeO3 and Bi2Fe4O9 in distinct ways. Fe2+... [more]

Keywords: axial flow pump, deflection angle, inlet passage, numerical simulation, pressure fluctuation
The deflection flow of inlet passage seriously affects the performance of axial flow pump devices, and reduces the operation efficiency and stability of pumping station systems. In this paper, the influence of different deflection angles on the internal flow characteristics and outlet pulsation characteristics of the inlet passage of the vertical axial flow pump are studied. Based on the Reynolds time-averaged N-S equation of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid and the standard k-ε turbulence model, the model axial flow pump device was numerically simulated. Under optimal working conditions (Qbep = 31.04 L/s), the internal flow field of the axial flow pump was analyzed to study the change law of the axial flow pump performance under different deflection angles. Under the flow conditions of 0.6 Qbep, 1.0 Qbep and 1.2 Qbep, the pulsation characteristics of the outlet of inlet passage in axial flow pump at different deflection angles were analyzed. The result shows that with the in... [more]
Environmental and Economic Aspects of Biomethane Production from Organic Waste in Russia

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, economic feasibility, greenhouse gas, organic waste
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), only a tiny fraction of the full potential of energy from biomass is currently exploited in the world. Biogas is a good source of energy and heat, and a clean fuel. Converting it to biomethane creates a product that combines all the benefits of natural gas with zero greenhouse gas emissions. This is important given that the methane contained in biogas is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2). The total amount of CO2 emission avoided due to the installation of biogas plants is around 3380 ton/year, as 1 m3 of biogas corresponds to 0.70 kg of CO2 saved. In Russia, despite the huge potential, the development of bioenergy is rather on the periphery, due to the abundance of cheap hydrocarbons and the lack of government support. Based on the data from an agro-industrial plant located in Central Russia, the authors of the article demonstrate that biogas technologies could be successfully used in Russia, provided that the Rus... Keywords: glazing, heat flow, numerical simulation, phase change material, solar radiation, Trombe wall
Among the technological solutions for external walls, the Trombe wall is an interesting proposition for obtaining solar radiation energy. The aim of the presented research is to determine the influence of glazing parameters on the thermal performance of the Trombe wall containing a phase change material (PCM). In the experimental tests, three glazing (G1, G2, and G3) with different heat transfer coefficient (Ug) and total solar energy transmittance factor (g) were used. The tests were carried out under laboratory conditions in a small-scale simulation chamber. The thermal energy of absorbed solar radiation was simulated with a heating panel. All of the walls are characterized by high dynamics of operation in the first two days. From the moment of heating, the walls achieve the minimum value of the heat flux after 16−18 h. In practice, this means the highest thermal efficiency of the wall during the night of the next day. A noticeable influence of the type of glazing on the operation of... [more]
