Ultra-Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Prediction Model Based on the Localized Emotion Reconstruction Emotional Neural Network
Yufei Wang, Li Zhu, Hua Xue
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chaotic, emotional parameters, extended signals, localized emotion reconstruction emotional neural network (LERENN), PV power prediction
Due to the intermittency and randomness of photovoltaic (PV) power, the PV power prediction accuracy of the traditional data-driven prediction models is difficult to improve. A prediction model based on the localized emotion reconstruction emotional neural network (LERENN) is proposed, which is motivated by chaos theory and the neuropsychological theory of emotion. Firstly, the chaotic nonlinear dynamics approach is used to draw the hidden characteristics of PV power time series, and the single-step cyclic rolling localized prediction mechanism is derived. Secondly, in order to establish the correlation between the prediction model and the specific characteristics of PV power time series, the extended signal and emotional parameters are reconstructed with a relatively certain local basis. Finally, the proposed prediction model is trained and tested for single-step and three-step prediction using the actual measured data. Compared with the prediction model based on the long short-term m... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, fatty acids composition, fuel, transesterification, vacuum fractionation
Biodiesel offers an advantage only if it can be used as a direct replacement for ordinary diesel. There are many reasons to promote biodiesel. However, biodiesel cannot get wide acceptance until its drawbacks have been overcome including poor low temperature flow properties, variation in the quality of biodiesel produced from different feedstocks and fuel filter blocking. In the present study, a much cheaper and simpler method called high vacuum fractional distillation (HVFD) has been used as an alternative to produce high-quality refined biodiesel and to improve on the abovementioned drawbacks of biodiesel. The results of the present study showed that none of biodiesel sample produced from crude Azadirachta indica (neem) oil met standard biodiesel cetane number requirements. The high vacuum fractional distillation (HVFD) process improved the cetane number of produced biodiesels which ranged from 44−87.3. Similarly, biodiesel produced from fractionated Azadirachta indica oil has shown... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deterioration, hot spot, image processing, photovoltaic module, thermal image
Several factors cause the output degradation of the photovoltaic (PV) module. The main affecting elements are the higher PV module temperature, the shaded cell, the shortened or conducting bypass diodes, and the soiled and degraded PV array. In this paper, we introduce an image processing technique that automatically identifies the module generating the hot spots in the solar module. In order to extract feature points, we used the maximally stable extremal regions (MSER) method, which derives the area of interest by using the inrange function, using the blue color of the PV module. We propose an effective matching method for feature points and a homography translation technique. The temperature data derivation method and the normal/ abnormal decision method are described in order to enhance the performance. The effectiveness of the proposed system was evaluated through experiments. Finally, a thermal image analysis of approximately 240 modules was confirmed to be 97% consistent with th... [more]
A Relational Conceptual Model in GIS for the Management of Photovoltaic Systems
Fabio Piccinini, Roberto Pierdicca, Eva Savina Malinverni
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: GIS, operation and maintenance, photovoltaics, PV faults, PV plants, relational data base
The aim of this manuscript is to define an operational pipeline of work, from data acquisition to the report creation, for the smart management of PV plants. To achieve such an ambitious result, we exploit the implementation of a conceptual model, deployed through a relational database to retrieve any kind of information related to the PV plant. The motivation that drove this research is due to the increasing construction of PV plants. In fact, following European and international investments that heavily stimulated the use of clean energy, the need to maintain PV plants in their maximum efficiency for their whole lifecycle emerged, to bring about benefits from both the ecological and the economic points of view. While the research community focuses on finding new and automatic ways to detect faults automatically, few efforts have been made considering the so-called Operation and Maintenance (O&M). A relational conceptual model may facilitate the management of heterogeneous sources of... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery operated electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, one-stop charging station, renewable energy sources
Currently, most of the vehicles make use of fossil fuels for operations, resulting in one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions. The need to cut our dependency on these fossil fuels has led to an increased use of renewable energy sources (RESs) for mobility purposes. A technical and economic analysis of a one-stop charging station for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) is investigated in this paper. The hybrid optimization model for electric renewables (HOMER) software and the heavy-duty refueling station analysis model (HDRSAM) are used to conduct the case study for a one-stop charging station at Technical University of Denmark (DTU)-Risø campus. Using HOMER, a total of 42 charging station scenarios are analyzed by considering two systems (a grid-connected system and an off-grid connected system). For each system three different charging station designs (design A-hydrogen load; design B-an electrical load, and design C-an integrated sys... [more]

Wenpeng Zhang, Fangping Tang, Lijian Shi, Qiujin Hu, Ying Zhou
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial-flow pump, Computational Fluid Dynamics, experiment, inlet vortex, vortex generators
The formation of an inlet vortex seriously restricts axial-flow pump device performance and poses a great threat to the safe and stable operation of the entire system. In this study, the change trends of an inlet vortex and its influence on an axial-flow pump are investigated numerically and experimentally in a vertical axial-flow pump device. Four groups of fixed vortex generators (VGs) are installed in front of the impeller to create stable vortices at the impeller inlet. The vortex influence on the performance of pump device is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The vortex patterns at different positions and moments in the pump device are explored to reveal the vortex shape change trend in the impeller and the pressure fluctuation induced by the vortex. The reliability and accuracy of steady and unsteady numerical results are verified by external characteristics and pressure fluctuation experimental results. Results show that it is feasible to install VGs before the impeller... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buildings, CO2-emissions, dynamic systems, electrical grid power, heat pumps, model predictive control (MPC)
An optimized heat pump control for building heating was developed for minimizing CO 2 emissions from related electrical power generation. The control is using weather and CO 2 emission forecasts as inputs to a Model Predictive Control (MPC)—a multivariate control algorithm using a dynamic process model, constraints and a cost function to be minimized. In a simulation study, the control was applied using weather and power grid conditions during a full-year period in 2017−2018 for the power bidding zone DK2 (East, Denmark). Two scenarios were studied; one with a family house and one with an office building. The buildings were dimensioned based on standards and building codes/regulations. The main results are measured as the CO 2 emission savings relative to a classical thermostatic control. Note that this only measures the gain achieved using the MPC control, that is, the energy flexibility, not the absolute savings. The results show that around 16% of savings cou... [more]

Yeongenn Kwon, Taeyoung Kim, Keon Baek, Jinho Kim
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dissatisfaction weights, electric vehicle, home appliances, home energy management system, multi-objective optimization, residential households, shared PV
A Time-of-Use (TOU)-tariff scheme, helps residential customers to adjust their energy consumption voluntarily and reduce energy cost. The TOU tariff provides flexibility in demand, alleviate volatility caused by an increase in renewable energy in the power system. However, the uncertainty in the customer’s behavior, causes difficulty in predicting changes in residential demand patterns through the TOU tariff. In this study, the dissatisfaction model for each time slot is set as the energy consumption data of the customer. Based on the actual customer’s consumption pattern, the user sets up a model of dissatisfaction that enables aggressive energy cost reduction. In the proposed Home Energy Management System (HEMS) model, the efficient use of jointly invested offsite photovoltaic (PV) power generation is also considered. The optimal HEMS scheduling result considering the dissatisfaction, cost, and PV curtailment was obtained. The findings of this study indicate, that incentives are requ... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ant colony optimization, CO2 reduction, meta-heuristics, multi-objective combinatorial optimization
The number and interdependency of vehicle CO2 reduction technologies, which can be employed to reduce greenhouse emissions for regulatory compliance in the European Union and other countries, has increasingly grown in the recent years. This paper proposes a method to optimally combine these technologies on cars or other road vehicles to improve their energy efficiency. The methodological difficulty is in the fact that these technologies have incompatibilities between them. Moreover, two conflicting objective functions are considered and have to be optimized to obtain Pareto optimal solutions: the CO2 reduction versus costs. For this NP-complete combinatorial problem, a method based on a metaheuristic with Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) combined with a Local Search (LS) algorithm is proposed and generalized as the Technology Packaging Problem (TPP). It consists in finding, from a given set of technologies (each with a specific cost and CO2 reduction potential), among all their possible c... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conservation voltage reduction, distributed generations, distribution network, heuristic algorithm, OLTC, SVR, volt/var control, voltage control
The voltage and reactive power control (Volt/VAR Control, VVC) in distribution networks has become a challenging issue with the increasing utilization of distributed generations (DGs). In this paper, a heuristic-based coordinated voltage control scheme that considers distribution voltage control devices, i.e., on-load tap changers (OLTC) and step voltage regulators (SVR), as well as reactive power control devices, i.e., DGs, are proposed. Conventional voltage control methods using non-linear node voltage equations require complex computation. In this paper, the formulation of simplified node voltage equations accounting for changes in tap position of distribution voltage control devices and reactive power changes of reactive power control devices are presented. A heuristic coordinated voltage control scheme using the proposed simplified node voltage equations is proposed. A coordinated voltage control scheme to achieve voltage control for nominal voltage and conservative voltage reduct... [more]

Cheng Chang, Yongming Li, Xiaoping Li, Chuxi Liu, Mauricio Fiallos-Torres, Wei Yu
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: embedded discrete fracture model, natural fractures, shale gas, well interference, well spacing optimization
At present, investigation of the effects of natural fractures on optimal well spacing of shale gas reservoirs from an economic perspective has been lacking. Traditional frameworks of fracture characterization, such as local grid refinement, make it unfeasible and inaccurate to study these effects of high-density natural fractures with complex geometries on well spacing. In this study, the non-intrusive EDFM (embedded discrete fracture model) method was presented to characterize fractures fast and accurately. The non-intrusiveness of EDFM removed the necessity of accessing the codes behind reservoir simulators, which meant it could simply create associated keywords that would correspondingly modify these fracture properties in separate files without information regarding the source codes. By implementing this powerful technology, a field-scale shale gas reservoir model was set up, including two-phase flow. The effective properties of hydraulic fractures were determined from the history... [more]

Keywords: ammonia synthesis, Energy Efficiency, heat transfer, multi-pass arrangement, optimal design, plate heat exchanger
The production of ammonia, consuming up to 5% of natural gas global production, accounts for about 2% of world energy. Worldwide, the Haber−Bosch process is the mainly used method of ammonia catalytic synthesis, involving temperatures up to 600 °C and pressures up to 32 MPa. In this paper, the results of the development and study of the special welded construction of plate heat exchanger (WPHE) for a column of ammonia synthesis are presented. The heat transfer and hydraulic performance of developed WPHE are investigated on a one-pass model in laboratory conditions. An equation for the relation between heat transfer effectiveness and the number of heat transfer units is proposed. A mathematical model of multi-pass WPHE is developed using these results. The validity of this model is confirmed by results of industrial tests performed with the prototype WPHE installed in operating column of ammonia synthesis at temperatures about 500 °C and pressure about 32 MPa. The tests confirmed the re... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, high-pressure direct injection, jet ignition, prechamber, two-stroke engine
The research on two-stroke engines has been focused lately on the development of direct injection systems for reducing the emissions of hydrocarbons by minimizing the fuel short-circuiting. Low temperature combustion (LTC) may be the next step to further improve emissions and fuel consumption; however, LTC requires unconventional ignition systems. Jet ignition, i.e., the use of prechambers to accelerate the combustion process, turned out to be an effective way to perform LTC. The present work aims at proving the feasibility of adopting passive prechambers in a high-pressure, direct injection, two-stroke engine through non-reactive computational fluid dynamics analyses. The goal of the analysis is the evaluation of the prechamber performance in terms of both scavenging efficiency of burnt gases and fuel/air mixture formation inside the prechamber volume itself, in order to guarantee the mixture ignitability. Two prechamber geometries, featuring different aspect ratios and orifice number... [more]
Numerical Analysis of Space Charge Behavior and Transient Electric Field under Polarity Reversal of HVDC Extruded Cable
Sun-Jin Kim, Bang-Wook Lee
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bipolar charge transport model, cable insulation, dielectrics, space charge behavior, voltage polarity reversal
The superimposed transient electric field generated by polarity reversal causes severe stress to the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable insulation. Especially for polymeric insulation materials, space charge accumulation is prominent, which strengthens local electric field intensity. In order to avoid the risk of dielectric breakdown resulting from an intensified electric field caused by space charge behavior, several numerical analyses have been conducted using the Bipolar Charge Transport (BCT) model. However, these studies have only considered a unidirectional electric field assuming only steady state operating conditions, and there are few works that have analyzed space charge behavior during transient states, especially for the polarity reversal period. In order to analyze the charge behavior under polarity reversal, it is necessary to establish the boundary condition considering the direction and intensity of the field. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a modified model... [more]

Keywords: circular economy, CO2 reduction, irrigation modernization, sustainable agriculture, water reuse
The climate change that plagues the world is causing extended periods of water shortage. This situation is forcing farmers in the region of Murcia in Spain to modernize their irrigation systems to optimize use of the scarce water they have and seek a circular water economy using the recovered water. Moreover, an associated problem is the need for energy that these facilities require in order to pressurize the required water. The use of photovoltaic generation contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Food produced in this region tends to have guaranteed markets in Europe and, geographically, due to the high quality of phytosanitary controls and traceability during their marketing, their optimal cultivation, and selection and labelling is verified, specifying valuable information such as: collection date, origin, the use of organic fertilizers among others. To maintain market access, it is important to continue implementing other environmental improvements, i.e., r... [more]
Selective CO Methanation in H2-Rich Gas for Household Fuel Cell Applications
Panagiota Garbis, Andreas Jess
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adiabatic reactor, CO methanation, process simulation, ruthenium catalyst
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are often used for household applications, utilizing hydrogen produced from natural gas from the gas grid. The hydrogen is thereby produced by steam reforming of natural gas followed by a water gas shift (WGS) unit. The H2-rich gas contains besides CO2 small amounts of CO, which deactivates the catalyst used in the PEMFCs. Preferential oxidation has so far been a reliable process to reduce this concentration but valuable H2 is also partly converted. Selective CO methanation considered as an attractive alternative. However, CO2 methanation consuming the valuable H2 has to be minimized. The modelling of selective CO methanation in a household fuel cell system is presented. The simulation was conducted for single and two-stage adiabatic fixed bed reactors (in the latter case with intermediate cooling), and the best operating conditions to achieve the required residual CO content (100 ppm) were calculated. This was done by varying the gas in... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: reliability, reuse, WEEE
Recently, the concept of “circular economy”, the design for end-of-life, the problem of reduction of waste of electronic and electrical equipment are becoming more and more important. The design of electronic systems for end-of-life considers the possibility of their repair, reuse and recycle, in order to reduce waste. This work proposes a new accurate model of failure probability density, that includes the failure probability of a used component in new equipment. The model has been tested, in conjunction with the International Electrotechnical Commission and Telcordia standard, in real industrial production. Eight years of historical faults have been analyzed and used to derive the fault models of the components. The model and analysis have been used for the analysis of real electronic products. The reuse of components could make an improvement to the reliability of the equipment.

Keywords: CHP-based systems, combined heat and power (CHP), demand response (DR), feasible operation region (FOR) of CHP, generation maintenance scheduling (GMS), maintenance scheduling
Yearly generation maintenance scheduling (GMS) of generation units is important in each system such as combined heat and power (CHP)-based systems to decrease sudden failures and premature degradation of units. Imposing repair costs and reliability deterioration of system are the consequences of ignoring the GMS program. In this regard, this research accomplishes GMS inside CHP-based systems in order to determine the optimal intervals for predetermined maintenance required duration of CHPs and other units. In this paper, cost minimization is targeted, and violation of units’ technical constraints like feasible operation region of CHPs and power/heat demand balances are avoided by considering related constraints. Demand-response-based short-term generation scheduling is accomplished in this paper considering the maintenance intervals obtained in the long-term plan. Numerical simulation is performed and discussed in detail to evaluate the application of the suggested mixed-integer quadra... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emission, energy consumption, energy-efficient glazing, Modelling, residential building, Simulation, thermochromics, window
The building sector contributes approximately one third of the total energy consumption worldwide. A large part of this energy is used for the heating and cooling of buildings, which can be drastically reduced by use of energy-efficient glazing. In this study, we performed building energy simulations on a prototypical residential building, and compared commercially available static (low-e, solar IR blocking) to newly developed adaptive thermochromic glazing systems for various climate regions. The modeling results show that static energy-efficient glazing is mainly optimized for either hot climates, where low solar heat gain can reduce cooling demands drastically, or cold climates, where low-e properties have a huge influence on heating demands. For intermediate climates, we demonstrate that adaptive thermochromic glazing in combination with a low-e coating is perfectly suited. The newly developed thermochromic glazing can lead to annual energy consumption improvement of up to 22% in c... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Bagnore power plant, flash technology, geothermal energy, life cycle assessment, pedigree matrix
Technologies to produce electric energy from renewable geothermal source are gaining increasing attention, due to their ability to provide a stable output suitable for baseload production. Performing life cycle assessment (LCA) of geothermal systems has become essential to evaluate their environmental performance. However, so far, no documented nor reliable information has been made available for developing robust LCA studies. This work provides a comprehensive inventory of the Italian Bagnore geothermal power plants system. The inventory is based exclusively on primary data, accounting for every life cycle stage of the system. Data quality was assessed by means of a pedigree matrix. The calculated LCA results showed, with an overall low level of uncertainty (2−3%), that the commissioning and operational phases accounted for more than 95% of the environmental profile. Direct emissions to atmosphere were shown to be the major environmental impact, particularly those released during the... [more]
Design and Experiment of a Power Sharing Control Circuit for Parallel Fuel Cell Modules
Chien-Chang Wu, Tsung-Lin Chen
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC/DC converter, Energy Conversion, Fuel Cells, parallel architectures, power distribution
In this paper, a novel control circuit that can connect fuel cell (FC) modules in parallel is proposed, which is particularly useful when the employed FCs have different electrical characteristics. Conventional methods (e.g., DC/DC converters) are not applicable in such situations because they cannot regulate the power output of each source in a parallel-connected topology. Consequently, the uniformity requirement of FCs increases and becomes costly. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method adopts a novel power-feedback method to control the power output of each FC module under both rated conditions and load changes, which in turn determines the operating point of each FC module. Therefore, the uniformity requirement can be relaxed. For proof of concept, the experiments employed two FC-like sources with different I−V characteristics. The experimental results indicated that the power assignment under the rated condition had a relative error of < 6.62%. The distribution ra... [more]
