Experimental Performance Analysis of Wi-SUN Channel Modelling Applied to Smart Grid Applications
Natthanan Tangsunantham, Chaiyod Pirak
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: received signal strength distribution approximation, smart grid networks, Wi-SUN channel modeling
The grid operation and communication network are essential for smart grids (SG). Wi-SUN channel modelling is used to evaluate the performance of Wi-SUN smart grid networks, especially in the last-mile communication. In this article, the distribution approximation of the received signal strength for IEEE 802.15.4g Wi-SUN smart grid networks was investigated by using the Rician distribution curve fitting with the accuracy improvement by the biased approximation methodology. Specifically, the Rician distribution curve fitting was applied to the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurement data. With the biased approximation method, the Rician K-factor, a non-centrality parameter (rs), and a scale parameter (σ) are optimized such that the lower value of the root-mean squared error (RMSE) is acheived. The environments for data collection are selected for representing the location of the data concentrator unit (DCU) and the smart meter installation in the residential area. In summar... [more]
Global Energy Consumption Optimization for UAV Swarm Topology Shaping
Yanxiang Yang, Xiangyin Zhang, Jiayi Zhou, Bo Li, Kaiyu Qin
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: global energy consumption, topology shaping, translation vector, UAV swarm
According to different mission scenarios, the UAV swarm needs to form specific topology shapes to achieve more robust system capability. The topology shaping, which will guide the UAVs autonomously to form the desired topology shape, is considered one of the most basic procedures in the UAV swarm field operations. The traditional optimization model of UAV swarm topology shaping proposed in most studies roughly represents the energy consumption by the squared Euclidean distances from initial positions to target positions of nodes. However, in practice, UAVs flying in different directions (vertical or horizontal) usually exhibits different energy consumption even though under the same moving distance. This paper proposes a more precise energy consumption model for UAV swarm topology shaping while taking the energy consumption for a UAV flying vertically upward, vertically downward, and horizontally into account. Simulation results show that the global energy consumption of the topology s... [more]
Tests Regarding the Effect of Dispersed Reinforcement Made with a Prototype Device from PET Beverage Bottles on the Strength Properties of Concrete

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: concrete, disposal of PET bottle waste, PET waste from beverage bottles, scattered reinforcement
Currently, waste generation is a huge problem all over the world. The largest source of generated waste is plastics from plastic packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene, including PET bottles. Modern ecology aims to reduce the carbon footprint by recycling plastics or by producing biodegradable plastics that are completely broken down by microorganisms into simple particles that occur naturally in nature. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has good mechanical properties but is resistant to microorganisms. As a result, it cannot be classified as a biodegradable plastic, but when it is reused for the production of utility products, it becomes a bioplastic. A good way to dispose of PET is to use it for the production of utility products, in which its good mechanical properties can be used. Concrete is a basic material, the consumption of which in the construction industry is enormous. One of the negative features of concrete is its low tensile strength, which can be improved with c... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, fluidized bed, poultry litter, soil improver, wet torrefaction
Poultry litter mass is formed in large quantities at poultry farms producing poultry meat (1−3 kg of litter mass per 1 kg of produced meat). These wastes represent a threat to the environment because of the presence of pathogenic microflora in them and the greenhouse gas emitted during the storage of these wastes. The procedure of poultry litter mass processing by wet torrefaction in a superheated water vapor environment at a temperature of 150−260 °C is studied. It is shown that after torrefaction at a temperature of 150 °C, the poultry litter mass retains high humidity, i.e., it represents an environment suitable for the re-development of pathogenic microflora. Only after wet torrefaction at a temperature of 260 °C does the humidity of the poultry litter mass decreases to 4%, and the risk of re-infection with pathogenic microflora decreases sharply. The absence of nitrates in the samples after torrefaction at a temperature of 260 °C indicates the termination of the activity of nitrif... [more]

Wenshang Chen, Yang Liu, Ben Chen
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hierarchical control strategy, hydrogen system, hydrogen utilization, pressure response characteristics, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is known as one of the most promising energy sources for electric vehicles. A hydrogen system is required to provide hydrogen to the stack in time to meet the flow and pressure requirements according to the power requirements. In this study, a 1-D model of a hydrogen system, including the fuel cell stack, was established. Two modes, one with and one without a proportion integration differentiation (PID) control strategy, were applied to analyze the pressure characteristics and performance of the PEMFC. The results showed that the established model could be well verified with experimental data. The anode pressure fluctuation with a PID control strategy was more stable, which reduced the damage to the fuel cell stack caused by sudden changes of anode pressure. In addition, the performance of the stack with the PID control mode was slightly improved. There was an inflection point for hydrogen utilization; the hydrogen utilization rate was highe... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, EnergyPLAN, MENA region, pumped hydro storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Energy storage for medium- to large-scale applications is an important aspect of balancing demand and supply cycles. Hydropower generation coupled with pumped hydro storage is an old but effective supply/demand buffer that is a function of the availability of a freshwater resource and the ability to construct an elevated water reservoir. This work reviews the technological feasibility of hydropower generation and also pumped hydro storage and its geographical distribution around the world. There is also an emphasis on installations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in terms of available capacity as well as past and future developments and expansions. A discussion is presented on a project taking place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Hatta region, which has a water reservoir that would be fit for utilization for pumped hydro storage applications. Once the project is commissioned in 2024, it will provide an estimated 2.06 TWh per year, helping the UAE achieve the goal o... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: controlling, embedded systems, LED lighting, lighting systems, photometric sensor, phototransistor
In the paper, an embedded system dedicated to control lighting of the workplace is proposed. The construction of the considered lighting system with a power LED (Light Emitting Diode) and the idea of its control are presented. Some results of investigations of the constructed lighting system, particularly those of the measurements of its optical and electrical parameters, are shown and discussed. The presented results show that by using this system, it is possible to obtain a high value of lighting uniformity in the workplace at different values of the main lighting in the room. The control is fast, and none of the reaction times achieved during the tests exceeded even 1 s while ensuring a smooth change. Although the layout and algorithms used are simple, it can be considered an advantage as they do not introduce unnecessary complexity while meeting all the requirements of standards. A discussion of the obtained results is given, particularly in the range of energy savings.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: DEA, district heating, ELECTRE, multi-criteria decision analysis, PROMETHEE, sensitivity analysis of weight, sustainability assessment, TOPSIS, WSM
The sustainability of energy systems is increasingly assessed for development of more resilient, greener district heating (DH) systems. That requires compiling technological, environmental, and economic indicators in a social, political, and institutional context. This work investigates DH system sustainability analysis by five frequently applied multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods—WSM, TOPSIS, PROMETHEE, ELECTRE and DEA. To compare the sustainability assessment results, a selection of 8 criteria describing 12 DH companies (DHC) was examined. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the most credible MCDA method. Criteria weights were changed: (1) individually for evaluation of the range of stability for alternatives (score of DHC performance); (2) individually by a fixed value to compare how each criterion weight change affected the average score of a result; and (3) to compare the AHP weighting method to an equal weight scenario. The results of sensitivity analysis... [more]

Keywords: electric submersible pump, harmonics, power consumption, submersible electric motor
Oil production is a complex technological process that requires significant electricity consumption. The main electricity consumers in oil and gas production workshops are artificial lift facilities. Currently, among the objects of mechanized mining, installations of electric submersible pumps are widespread. When planning technological modes, it is necessary to be able to assess the change in the power consumption parameters when changing the technological process parameters. The paper proposes a typical replacement scheme for the electrical complex element. The power consumption calculation of electric submersible pump installations has been carried out. The error in the power consumption modeling results of electric submersible pump installations in comparison with the results of instrumental measurements is no more than 10%. The estimation of additional losses of electric energy caused by the influence of harmonics is carried out. The proposed technique makes it possible to estimat... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, nearly Zero Energy Buildings, overheating, summer thermal comfort
While the potential impact of climate change mitigation measures is well documented in building sciences literature, there are only relatively sparse studies focusing on the efficiency of adaptation strategies. This paper aims to contribute to this topic by evaluating the extent to which the design of a typical nearly Zero Energy Buildling (nZEB) house in Wallonia (Belgium), and its current operation, could provide summer thermal comfort in a changing climate. Based on calibrated whole building energy simulations, and on the integration of future climate data directly derived from a high-resolution climate model, this study evaluates the potential evolution of overheating risks in the living room and in the main bedroom of the house. Discussing the compliance with existing overheating criteria, the study shows that the passive strategies currently deployed in the house might not be sufficient to guarantee summer thermal comfort especially in the bedroom, and that other strategies might... Electric retrofitting (e-retrofitting) is a viable option for accelerating the renewal of heavy-duty vehicle fleets to reduce the related emissions. We introduce a simulation-based assessment of e-retrofitting strategies for heavy-duty vehicles. Our simulation tool, an electric vehicle fleet simulation toolbox, comprises three modules, namely driving cycles, vehicle dynamics, and vehicle profiles. The first allows for the creation of realistic driving cycles based on GPS data from real routes. The vehicle dynamics and vehicle profiles incorporate, e.g., the modelling of the powertrain and driving conditions. Ten realistic driving cycles were created and used for investigating and comparing three different powertrain alternatives, including the original diesel powertrain, electric with a single-speed transmission and electric with a multi-speed transmission. The vehicles were simulated in two different heavy-load scenarios. First, driving with a cargo load represented by the maximum veh... [more]
Modelling of Solar PV under Varying Condition with an Improved Incremental Conductance and Integral Regulator

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, converter restoration, incremental conductance, peak power point tracking, solar photovoltaic system
The introduction of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems would provide electricity accessibility to rural areas that are far from or have no access to the grid system. Various countries are planning to reduce their emissions from fossil fuel, due to its negative effects, by substituting with renewable energy resources. The use of solar PV systems is expanding globally because of growing energy demands and depleting fossil fuel reserves. Grid integration of the solar system is expected to increase further in the near future. However, the power output of solar PV systems is inherently intermittent, and depends on the irradiance and the temperature operation of the solar cell, resulting in a wide range of defects. Hence, it is vital to extract peak power from the solar panel in all conditions to provide constant power to the load. This paper presents a tracking control method of the peak output power of a solar PV system connected to a DC-DC boost converter using an improved incremental conduc... [more]

Keywords: demand response, distribution locational marginal price, electricity markets, microgrids multi-agent system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transactive energy
This work proposes a distribution locational marginal price (DLMP)-based transactive energy (TE) framework for distribution systems with enthusiastic or smart prosumers. The framework uses a multi-agent system (MAS) as the basis on which the proposed TE model, i.e., distribution locational marginal price (DLMP) based TE management system (DTEMS), is implemented. DTEMS uses a novel metric known as the nodal earning component, which is determined by the optimal power flow (OPF) based smart auction mechanism, to schedule the TE transactions optimally among the stakeholders by alleviating the congestion in the distribution system. Based on the individual contributions to the congestion relief, DTEMS ranks the prosumers and loads as most valuable players (MVP) and assigns the energy trading price according to the category of the player. The effectiveness of the proposed TE model is verified by simulating the proposed DTEMS for a modified 33 bus radial distribution system fed with various pl... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: 48 V, battery sizing, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), Life Cycle Analysis, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), real-driving simulation
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are commonly operated with high-voltage (HV) components due to their higher power availability compared to 48 V-systems. On the contrary, HV-powertrain components are more expensive and require additional safety measures. Additionally, the HV system can only be repaired and maintained with special equipment and protective gear, which is not available in all workshops. PHEVs based on a 48 V-system level can offer a reasonable compromise between the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-saving potential and cost-effectiveness in small- and medium-sized electrified vehicles. In our study, the lifecycle emissions of the proposed 48 V PHEV system were compared to a conventional vehicle, 48 V HEV, and HV PHEV for individual driving use cases. To ensure a holistic evaluation, the analysis was based on measured real-driving cycles including Global Position System (GPS) map-matched slope profiles for a parallel hybrid. Optimal PHEV battery capacities were derive... [more]
Experimental Comparison of Hub- and Roller-Type Chassis Dynamometers for Vehicle Exhaust Emissions

Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, chassis dynamometer, dynamic radius, hub dynamometer, roller dynamometer, rotational mass, tire slip, vehicle emissions
The emissions of vehicles are measured in laboratories with roller-type chassis dynamometers, which simulate road driving resistances. Hub-coupled dynamometers, which are not included in the regulations for emission measurements, are commonly used for research and development purposes, for example, to assess powertrain capabilities, simulate on-road trips, and calibrate the control of individual wheels. As they do not need particular infrastructure and offer a wider range of applications, they could be a more economical alternative, especially if they could also be used for emission measurements for the type approval of vehicles. Nevertheless, the two types have not been directly compared in the literature, and, thus, their equivalency, especially regarding emission measurements, is not known. In this study, the emissions of a diesel and a gasoline plug-in vehicle were compared using the same analytical equipment and by switching only the roller and hub dynamometers. The diesel vehicle... Road transport is a relevant source of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to meet the European decarbonisation targets, the share of electrified vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), is rapidly growing, becoming the second most popular powertrain in the European market. PHEVs are of interest since they are expected to deliver a reduction in gaseous pollutants such as NOx as well as in greenhouse gases such as CO2. Herein, we explored both categories of emissions for three PHEVs with gasoline direct-injection engines, meeting the latest European emission standards (Euro 6d and Euro 6d-TEMP). They were studied in laboratory and on the road, in different modalities and temperatures. All tested vehicles met the Euro 6 emission limits in the Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) and the real driving emissions (RDE) test procedure. Still, when their internal combustion engine ignited even for a few km, their emiss... [more]

Keywords: CNN, secondary equipment, short text classification
As the construction of smart grids is in full swing, the number of secondary equipment is also increasing, resulting in an explosive growth of power big data, which is related to the safe and stable operation of power systems. During the operation of the secondary equipment, a large amount of short text data of faults and defects are accumulated, and they are often manually recorded by transportation inspection personnel to complete the classification of defects. Therefore, an automatic text classification based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the topic model is used to mine the global features. At the same time, the word2vec word vector model is used to mine the contextual semantic features of words. Then, the improved LDA topic word vector and word2vec word vector are combined to absorb their respective advantages and utilizations. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the model is verified using actual operational data from the northwest po... [more]

Keywords: deep long short-term memory neural network, gas flooding, proxy model, well control optimization
Gas flooding has proven to be a promising method of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) for mature water-flooding reservoirs. The determination of optimal well control parameters is an essential step for proper and economic development of underground hydrocarbon resources using gas injection. Generally, the optimization of well control parameters in gas flooding requires the use of compositional numerical simulation for forecasting the production dynamics, which is computationally expensive and time-consuming. This paper proposes the use of a deep long-short-term memory neural network (Deep-LSTM) as a proxy model for a compositional numerical simulator in order to accelerate the optimization speed. The Deep-LSTM model was integrated with the classical covariance matrix adaptive evolutionary (CMA-ES) algorithm to conduct well injection and production optimization in gas flooding. The proposed method was applied in the Baoshaceng reservoir of the Tarim oilfield, and shows comparable accuracy (wi... [more]

Keywords: cage slip, Dynamic Modelling, friction force, rolling-element bearing, vibration
Rolling-element bearings play vital roles in the dynamic vibration performance of the whole machinery. Hence, accurate modeling and assessment of the rolling-element bearing are beneficial for the well understanding of the vibration response of rolling-element bearing. However, cage slip is usually ignored in the traditional rolling-element bearing modeling methods, which has a direct influence on the rotating speed and friction force of the rolling elements. To settle the modeling problem of rolling-element bearing with cage slip, in this study, a nonlinear dynamic model with multiple degrees of freedom of the roller bearing is established. The cage slip, the motion of each roller, nonlinear contact, damping, and friction are taken into consideration. With the proposed method, a nonlinear traction model is presented to describe the friction forces induced by cage slip. Furthermore, both the friction force acting on rolling elements and the effects of cage slip on the vibration respons... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, battery temperature, battery thermal management, energy management strategy, fuel cell degradation, fuel cell truck, optimal calibration
Energy management strategies have a significant impact on the hydrogen economy of fuel cell trucks and the lifetime of battery and fuel cell systems. This contribution presents the design and optimal calibration of an energy management strategy that is adaptive to the battery and ambient temperatures. Indeed, fuel cell trucks face critical operating conditions due to high ambient temperatures or high loads on long uphill roads. However, the presented adaptive energy management strategy shifts the electric loads to the fuel cell system to limit the battery usage, avoiding accelerated degradation due to battery temperature peaks without hindering the hydrogen economy. The strategy design and calibration involves a multi-objective optimization of performance indicators related to hydrogen consumption, fuel cell degradation, battery thermal state, equivalent charge/discharge cycles, and charge control. This work uses AVL CAMEO to systematically vary the adaptive curve parameters to explore... [more]

Keywords: biomass production, family farms, high nature value farmland, Poland, sustainable development
In the paper we provide an analysis of the potential of agricultural holdings for biomass production, an assessment of the level of farm sustainability and a description of the farming conditions of agricultural holdings depending on the degree of natural valuation of a given area. The approach makes it possible to assess the level of sustainability of farms, also in the context of their potential and taking into account the quality of the production space and its importance for increasing biodiversity. We use public and unpublished data of Statistics Poland (2005, 2007, 2016) as well as data on farms keeping accounts for the Polish FADN in 2016−2018. The paper shows that although concentration processes are progressing, farm productivity is increasing, but this is linked to specialisation, leading to efficient management of labour and land resources. Nevertheless, the decreasing number of farms with proper winter vegetation cover and optimal balances was confirmed. The farming conditi... [more]
