Comparison of Phase-Shifting Transformers Properties
Paweł Albrechtowicz, Bartosz Rozegnał, Piotr Cisek
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: phase angle, phase-shifting transformers, power flows
This article presents different phase shifting transformers (PSTs) types and their influence on the transmitted active power and energy parameters. Typical PSTs, both symmetrical (SPST) and asymmetrical (APST), are compared to the asymmetrical controllable PST (ACPST). The ACPST allows for regulating both quadrature and longitudinal voltage, which makes this type interesting in practical applications and power flow optimizations. The collected data enable a direct comparison of these PSTs’ properties. APST allows high power transfer, but the voltage increase in some cases cannot be acceptable. SPST type in taken tests has the best properties concerning the transferred power, output voltage, and internal voltage drop. ACPST, in its primary mode, can be efficiently used as a substitute for the SPST. However, in some range of injected quadrature voltages, it can achieve even better properties than the SPST. The laboratory and simulation tests allow the development of the ACPST regulation... [more]
Design of a Load Frequency Controller Based on an Optimal Neural Network
Sadeq D. Al-Majidi, Mohammed Kh. AL-Nussairi, Ali Jasim Mohammed, Adel Manaa Dakhil, Maysam F. Abbod, Hamed S. Al-Raweshidy
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, load frequency controller, Particle Swarm Optimization, power system network and stability
A load frequency controller (LFC) is a crucial part in the distribution of a power system network (PSN) to restore its frequency response when the load demand is changed rapidly. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) technique is utilised to design the optimal LFC. However, the training of the optimal ANN model for a multi-area PSN is a major challenge due to its variations in the load demand. To address this challenge, a particle swarm optimization is used to distribute the nodes of a hidden layer and to optimise the initial neurons of the ANN model, resulting in obtaining the lower mean square error of the ANN model. Hence, the mean square error and the number of epochs of the ANN model are minimised to about 9.3886 × 10−8 and 25, respectively. To assess this proposal, a MATLAB/Simulink model of the PSN is developed for the single-area PSN and multi-area PSN. The results show that the LFC based on the optimal ANN is more effective for adjusting the frequency level and imp... [more]
A Unit Commitment Model Considering Feasibility of Operating Reserves under Stochastic Optimization Framework
Heejung Park
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic dispatch, energy management, renewable generation, reserve feasibility, stochastic unit commitment
Grid integration of renewable resources such as solar and wind energy can significantly raise the level of uncertainty in power systems, making the scheduled operation of generating units difficult. Therefore, the importance of operating reserves is more emphasized to prevent disruption by sudden changes in outputs of generators. In this paper, a stochastic unit commitment (UC) model to reflect uncertainty due to a large amount of renewable resources is proposed, in which upward and downward operating reserves are deployed simultaneously, and feasibility of the reserves is examined to make the deployed reserves supplied reliably. Uncertain parameters considered in the model are wind power availability, solar direct normal irradiance, and electric load. Two-stage stochastic programming is applied to the mathematical formulation, where UC decisions including dispatch are modeled as non-anticipative variables at the first stage, and redispatch decisions to serve realized electric demand a... However, different technologies such as hybrid thermal cycles, variable intake systems, extreme condition combustion (manifesting low tempera... [more]
A Multi-Region CFD Model for Aircraft Ground Deicing by Dispersed Liquid Spray
Sami Ernez, François Morency
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aircraft ground deicing (AGD), extended enthalpy–porosity technique, multi-region model, particulate two-phase flows, spray tip penetration (STP), spraying parameters
The aircraft ground deicing (AGD) process is a mandatory step before taking off in a cold climate. The development of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) tools to simulate AGD could help the industry reduce its costs and limit pollution. Previous works have modelled some parts of the AGD process. Building on these previous works, this paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) CFD algorithm to simulate the process in full scale. The algorithm comprises a multi-region model where a Lagrangian method solves the spray particle equations, and an enthalpy−porosity approach with an Eulerian method simulates the ice melting. The multi-region approach is verified in this paper through a spray-tip penetration (STP) test. The STP predicted using the multi-region model had 99% agreement with the STP predicted using a Lagrangian method. Therefore, the multi-region technique correctly modeled the particle momentum between the two regions. This paper also presents a numerical calibration of the permeabi... [more]
Integrated Approach to Diagnostics of Failures and Cyber-Attacks in Industrial Control Systems
Michał Syfert, Andrzej Ordys, Jan Maciej Kościelny, Paweł Wnuk, Jakub Możaryn, Krzysztof Kukiełka
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyber-attack detection, cyber-attacks isolation, failure detection
This paper is concerned with the issue of the diagnostics of process faults and the detection of cyber-attacks in industrial control systems. This problem is of significant importance to energy production and distribution, which, being part of critical infrastructure, is usually equipped with process diagnostics and, at the same time, is often subject to cyber-attacks. A commonly used approach would be to separate the two types of anomalies. The detection of process faults would be handled by a control team, often with a help of dedicated diagnostic tools, whereas the detection of cyber-attacks would be handled by an information technology team. In this article, it is postulated here that the two can be usefully merged together into one, comprehensive, anomaly detection system. For this purpose, firstly, the main types of cyber-attacks and the main methods of detecting cyber-attacks are being reviewed. Subsequently, in the analogy to “process fault”—a term well established in process d... [more]
The Economic Viability of PV Power Plant Based on a Neural Network Model of Electricity Prices Forecast: A Case of a Developing Market
Nikola Mišnić, Bojan Pejović, Jelena Jovović, Sunčica Rogić, Vladimir Đurišić
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity prices, financial analysis, NNAR, PV plant
In this paper, a study was completed investigating the financial viability of a 5 MW solar power plant in Montenegro with direct access to the market, rather than a long-term power purchase agreement. The empirical research included an econometric analysis and forecast of the prices on the exchange market, using two methods, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and neural network auto regression (NNAR), which are compared to the forecast electricity prices. The former was used in order to obtain the electricity prices forecast, since it showed significantly better predictive performances. Consequently, the financial analysis results indicated this business strategy is a financially more viable option, even though it implies increased risks. All investigated metrics and sensitivity analysis pointed in favor of this option, which has significantly higher profitability with a shorter payback period, compared to the usual market strategy. The main conclusion and recommendation... [more]
Energy Security, Sustainable Development and the Green Bond Market
Arkadiusz Orzechowski, Małgorzata Bombol
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy security, Granger causality, green bonds, sustainable development goals
Many countries are pursuing energy security (ES) in their economies while implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs). Relevant policies may include: (1) access to efficient alternative and preferably renewable energy sources (RESs); and (2) reductions in conventionally obtained energy consumption. As the demand for energy is growing and alternative energy resources are expensive, new ways of financing projects to improve ES are of special interest, e.g., issuing green bonds. In such cases, the obtained funds are allocated to projects that can both improve ES and help to achieve SDGs. The aim of the study was to explore the dependences (in the sense of Granger causality) between the green bond (GB) market, different aspects of sustainable development, as measured by global indicators taken from a family of environmental NASDAQ OMX indices, and ES represented by crude oil prices. The methodology is based on the vector autoregression model. The findings reveal evidence of a short-t... [more]

Faried Makansi, Katharina Schmitz
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, fault detection and diagnosis, feature extraction, feature selection, hydraulic press, industrial hydraulics, neural networks, supervised learning
The automated evaluation of machine conditions is key for efficient maintenance planning. Data-driven methods have proven to enable the automated mapping of complex patterns in sensor data to the health state of a system. However, generalizable approaches for the development of such solutions in the framework of industrial applications are not established yet. In this contribution, a procedure is presented for the development of data-driven condition monitoring solutions for industrial hydraulics using supervised learning and neural networks. The proposed method involves feature extraction as well as feature selection and is applied on simulated data of a hydraulic press. Different steps of the development process are investigated regarding the design options and their efficacy in fault classification tasks. High classification accuracies could be achieved with the presented approach, whereas different faults are shown to require different configurations of the classification models.
Cognitive Computing—Will It Be the Future “Smart Power” for the Energy Enterprises?
Olga Pilipczuk
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bibliometric analysis, cognitive computing, cognitive enterprise, Energy
Nowadays, cognitive computing has become the popular solution to many problems arising in the energy industry, such as the creation of renewable technologies, energy saving, and searching for new sources. Last decade, a substantial number of scientific papers aiming to support these tasks were published. On the other hand, some years ago, the “cognitive enterprise” (CE) concept was introduced by the IBM company, which assumes, among others, the cognitive technologies used to increase enterprise intelligence. On the road to obtaining the status of a “cognitive enterprise”, it should overcome many challenges. Thus, the aim of the paper was to analyze the current state of research on the application of cognitive computing in the energy industry and to define the trends, challenges, milestones, and perspectives in scientific work’s development. The aim has been achieved using the bibliometric approach. The preliminary analysis was made by Web of Science data sources; 4182 records were retr... [more]
Optimal Design of Power-On Downshift Control of Series-Parallel Hybrid Transmission Based on Motor Active Speed Regulation
Xiangyang Xu, Kun Guo, Xuewu Liu, Hongzhong Qi, Peng Dong, Shuhan Wang, Wei Guo
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: motor speed regulation, power-on downshift control, shift impact, two-speed series-parallel hybrid transmission
Multi-speed transmission is the main development direction of hybrid transmission, which has brought higher shift quality requirements than traditional fuel vehicle transmission. However, there is less research on the shifting control of hybrid transmission, especially for the shifting control of dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), which uses the wet clutch as a shift element. This paper studies the power-on downshift process of a two-speed series-parallel hybrid transmission, proposes a shifting control strategy based on motor active speed regulation, and deeply analyzes the causes of maximum impact during the shifting process. The results show that the reverse torque produced in the process of eliminating the remaining slip is the root cause of the maximum impact. On this basis, two optimization strategies are proposed to reduce the shift impact and improve the shift quality. The simulation results show that the proposed optimization strategies can effectively suppress the shift imp... [more]
Design of a V-Twin with Crank-Slider Mechanism Wind Energy Harvester Using Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction for Powering Small Scale Electronic Devices
Jamshid Farzidayeri, Vishwas Bedekar
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: crank, electromagnetic, Energy, Optimization, slider, Sustainability, vibration, Wind
The maintenance of wireless sensor networks involves challenges such as the periodic replacement of batteries or energy sources in remote locations that are often inaccessible. Therefore, onboard energy harvesting solutions can provide a viable alternative. Experimental energy harvesting from fluid flow, specifically from air flow, is typically restricted to a rotor and stator design or a model that strikes a piezoelectric. On the other hand, energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations routinely uses the linear motion of a magnet passing through a coil or vibrating piezoelectric elements. In this paper, we propose a novel V-twin harvester design that converts wind energy from a rotational input into the linear motion of a magnet inside a coil via a crank-slider mechanism. This design allows for high performance with a smoother voltage output when compared to a reference rotor/stator harvester design or piezoelectric method. At 0.5 Hz, a single crank-slider generated a voltage of 0.176... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: biopolymers, hydrophobicity, lignin, modification
Lignin is the second most abundant renewable natural polymer that occurs on Earth, and as such, it should be widely utilised by industries in a variety of applications. However, these applications and possible research seem to be limited or prevented by a variety of factors, mainly the high heterogeneity of lignin. Selective modifications of the structure and of functional groups allow better properties in material applications, whereas the separation of different qualitative lignin groups permits selective application in industry. This review is aimed at modification of the lignin structure, increasing the hydrophobicity of the produced materials, and focusing on several perspective modifications for industrial-scale production of lignin-based polymers, as well as challenges, opportunities, and other important factors to take into consideration.

Behrooz Mosallanejad, Mehran Javanbakht, Zahra Shariatinia, Mohammad Akrami
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrolyte additive, graphite anode, lithium-ion battery, phenyl vinyl sulfonate, solid electrolyte interphase
Irreversible capacity fading, originating from the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), is a common challenge encountered in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) containing an electrolyte based on ethylene carbonate (EC). In this research, phenyl vinyl sulfonate (PVS) is examined as a novel electrolyte additive to mitigate this issue and subsequently enhance the cyclic stability of LIBs. As evidenced by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, PVS has a higher reduction potential than that of EC, which is in accordance with the cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Accordingly, the PVS-containing electrolyte demonstrated a reduction peak at ~1.9 V, which was higher than that of the electrolyte without an additive (at ~1.7 V). In contrast to the SEI derived from the reference electrolyte, the one built-in PVS-containing electrolyte was capable of completely inhibiting the electrolyte reduction. In terms of the Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (E... [more]

Giulio Barletta, Piera DiPrima, Davide Papurello
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery models, equivalent circuit model (ECM), lithium-ion batteries (LIB), parameter estimation
Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) proved over time to be one of the best choices among rechargeable batteries. Their small size, high energy density, long life, and low maintenance need make them a prominent candidate for the role of the most widespread energy storage system. They have the potential to monopolize the green technology sector. An accurate definition of the parameters defining the behaviour of the battery in different operating conditions is thus essential, as their knowledge proves crucial in certain fields such as those that involve electric vehicles. This paper proposes the estimation of the values of the parameters of the Thévenin equivalent circuit of a LIB commercial cell. Experimental data obtained through constant current charge/discharge cycles are analysed through a Simulink model, and results are obtained as a function of the state of charge (SOC) for a fixed and controlled temperature value. The results achieved with the proposed model can monitor the salient parame... [more]

Ji Hao Zhang, Fue-Sang Lien, Eugene Yee
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator line method, OpenFOAM, synergy, vertical-axis wind turbine, wind energy
The presence of power augmentation effects, or synergy, in vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) offers unique opportunities for enhancing wind-farm performance. This paper uses an open-source actuator-line-method (ALM) code library for OpenFOAM (turbinesFoam) to conduct an investigation into the synergy patterns within two- and three-turbine VAWT arrays. The application of ALM greatly reduces the computational cost of simulating VAWTs by modelling turbines as momentum source terms in the Navier−Stokes equations. In conjunction with an unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) approach using the k-ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model, the ALM has proven capable of predicting VAWT synergy. The synergy of multi-turbine cases is characterized using the power ratio which is defined as the power coefficient of the turbine cluster normalized by that for turbines in isolated operation. The variation of the power ratio is characterized with respect to the array layout parameter... [more]

Xin Li, Chunlei Huang, Shaoguo Zhan, Yunxi Wu
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon emission reduction, city cluster policy, difference-in-difference method
Climate anomalies are affecting the world. How to reduce carbon emissions has become an important issue for governments and academics. Although previous researchers have discussed the factors of carbon emission reduction from environmental regulation, economic development, and industrial structure, limited studies have explored the carbon emission reduction effect of a city’s spatial structure. Based on 108 Chinese cities from the Yangtze River Economic Belt between 2003 and 2017, this paper examines the impact of the city cluster policy on city carbon emissions using the difference-in-differences (DID) method. We find that: (1) The city cluster policy has significantly reduced the cities’ carbon emissions by 7.4%. Furthermore, after a series of robust and endogenous tests, such as parallel trend and PSM-DID, the core conclusion still remains. (2) We further identify possible economic channels through this effect, and find that city cluster policy would increase city productivity, city... [more]

Keywords: brittle index, coalbed methane (CBM), gas-bearing property, prestack seismic inversion
The prediction and development of three gases, mainly coalbed methane, shale gas, and tight sandstone gas, in the Huainan coal measures of China, has been the focus of local coal mines. However, due to the overlapping and coexisting characteristics of the three gas reservoirs in Huainan coal measure strata, it is challenging to develop the three gas. The coal mine has been creating a single pool for a long time, resulting in the severe waste of other gas resources in developing the gas-bearing resources in the coal measure strata. The gas-containing reservoir is predicted based on geological, seismic, and logging in Huainan Mining. In addition, determining the excellent area for reference for the development of three gas resources. First, using logging data, mathematical−statistical methods are used to analyze the physical parameters of gas-bearing reservoirs in multi-layered stacked coal seams. Keywords: distribution grid, electric vehicles, flexibility, linear optimization, local energy market, market design
Local Energy Markets (LEMs) were recently proposed as a measure to coordinate an increasing amount of distributed energy resources on a distribution grid level. A variety of market models for LEMs are currently being discussed; however, a consistent analysis of various proposed grid tariff designs is missing. We address this gap by formulating a linear optimization-based market matching algorithm capable of modeling a variation of grid tariff designs. A comprehensive simulative study is performed for yearly simulations of a rural, semiurban, and urban grids in Germany, focusing on electric vehicles, heat pumps, battery storage, and photovoltaics in residential and commercial buildings. We compare energy-based grid tariffs with constant, topology-dependent and time-variable cost components and power-based tariffs to a benchmark case. The results show that grid tariffs with power fees show a significantly higher potential for the reduction of peak demand and feed-in (30−64%) than energy... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined profile control, compatibility, differential, heterogeneity, recovery
With the oilfield developed to a later stage and its heterogeneity gradually becoming more serious, the adaptability of conventional profile control technologies for the reservoir becomes worse and worse. Therefore, the fitness of compatibility between combined patterns of profile control and target reservoir becomes an important factor for the efficient development of the oil field. Due to the importance of compatibility between the profile control and reservoir property, research on the remaining oil recovery with combined patterns of profile control and foam flooding were carried out. The experimental results showed that the combined profile control is highly consistent with the target reservoir. With a little lower initial viscosity (28.3−40.9 mPa·s), the channel plugging system is easy to inject. Due to the addition of a polymer, the reinforced foam is not easy to defoam when transporting in the pore throats of the core sample, and its spontaneous adaptability makes it match with... [more]

Keywords: asphaltenes, electron paramagnetic resonance, HYperfine Sublevel CORrelation Spectroscopy, vanadyl complexes
The purpose of this work is to analyze the electron−nuclear interactions of the vanadyl-porphyrin (VP) complexes in oil asphaltenes. Asphaltenes from the Athabasca oil sands were studied by HYperfine Sublevel CORrelation Spectroscopy (HYSCORE) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). It makes it possible to resolve and interpret complex hyperfine spectra of intrinsic VP with strong and weak hyperfine interactions between the electron magnetic moment and various nuclear spins (1H, 14N, 51V). The main parameters of spin-Hamiltonian for the VP spin system are determined. The axially symmetric structure of the VP complexes is revealed, and the local nuclear environment of the paramagnetic center is investigated. The results can be used for the study of asphaltene electron−nuclear structure and asphaltene aggregates with the aim of elucidating asphaltenes’ transformation(s) under the influence of external treatment.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 flooding, CO2 storage, CO2-enhanced oil recovery, CT scanning, extra-low permeability sand reservoir, remaining oil distribution
Tight sandstone reservoirs are ideal locations for CO2 storage. To evaluate the oil displacement efficiency and storage potential of CO2 in the tight sandstone reservoir in the Huang 3 area of the Changqing Oilfield, four kinds of displacement experiments were conducted on core samples from the Chang 8 Formation in the Huang 3 area. These experiments were performed using micro-displacement equipment, digital core technology, and an online CT scanning system; the different oil displacement processes were recorded as three-dimensional images. The results show that the CO2 flooding alternated with water scheme can improve crude oil recovery the most. Comparing the cores before and after the displacement shows that the amount of crude oil in pores with larger sizes decreases more. The remaining oil is mainly in thin films or is dispersed and star-shaped, indicating that the crude oil in the medium and large pores is swept and recovered. The CO2 displacement efficiency is 41.67~55.08%, and... [more]

Keywords: hydrogen peroxide, oxygen reduction, photocatalysis, semiconductor, water oxidation
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has demonstrated applicability in a wide range of applications, spanning from a bleaching agent in the pulp industry, environmental remediation, and fuel cell technology. Industrial scale synthesis, either by the anthraquinone method or catalytic oxidation of hydrogen gas, has serious drawbacks which are related with energy demanding and multi-step processes. An alternative green strategy involves the photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2. All that is needed is the renewable energy of the sun, a semiconducting species absorbing in the visible region, water, and oxygen. In this minireview, we describe the evolution of research milestones that have been achieved within the recent decades regarding the development of functional photocatalytic systems. In the early studies, back in the 1980’s, TiO2-based systems were mostly investigated. However, due to the large band gap of titania (3.2 eV), alternative semiconductors were studied which strongly absorb in the visible r... [more]
