Capability for Hydrogeochemical Modelling within Discrete Fracture Networks
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ConnectFlow, DFN, fracture, GDF, hydrogeochemistry, repository, transport
A new method for simulating solute transport and geochemical interactions within fractured rock is presented. This will be an important capability for assessing the safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities that are located within fractured crystalline bedrock. Specifically, the discrete fracture network (DFN) module within the ConnectFlow groundwater flow and transport software has been updated to: (i) simulate the advection and diffusion of more than one solute species (with the flow and transport equations coupled by the evolving density and viscosity); (ii) model the diffusion of solutes into the rock matrix between fractures; and (iii) utilise the iPhreeqc library to model chemical reactions involving solutes, minerals on fracture/pore surfaces and rock minerals. The performance of ConnectFlow’s DFN module has also been significantly improved via parallelisation which allows more complex calculations to be attempted. These developments are significant because hydrogeochemist... [more]

Inductively Powered Sensornode Transmitter Based on the Interconnection of a Colpitts and a Parallel Resonant LC Oscillator
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inductive power and data transmission, interconnected oscillators, wireless sensors
An inductively powered passive transmitter architecture for wireless sensornodes is presented in this paper. The intended applications are inductively powered internally illuminated photoreactors. The application range of photoreactors is wide. They are used, e.g., for microalgae cultivation or for photochemistry, just to name two important fields of use. The inductive powering system used to transmit energy to the wireless internal illumination system is to be additionally used to supply the here presented transmitter. The aim of expanding the named internal illuminated photoreactors with wireless sensors is to obtain a better insight into the processes inside it. This will be achieved by measuring essential parameters such as, e.g., the temperature, pH value, or gas concentrations of the medium inside the reactor, which for algal cultivation would be water. Due to the passive architecture of the transmitter electronics, there is no need for batteries, and therefore, no temporal limit... [more]

Batteries and Hydrogen Storage: Technical Analysis and Commercial Revision to Select the Best Option
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, energy capacity, Energy Storage, gravimetric and volumetric density, Hydrogen, hydrogen storage method, mathematical model, technical comparison
This paper aims to analyse two energy storage methods—batteries and hydrogen storage technologies—that in some cases are treated as complementary technologies, but in other ones they are considered opposed technologies. A detailed technical description of each technology will allow to understand the evolution of batteries and hydrogen storage technologies: batteries looking for higher energy capacity and lower maintenance, while hydrogen storage technologies pursuing better volumetric and gravimetric densities. Additionally, as energy storage systems, a mathematical model is required to know the state of charge of the system. For this purpose, a mathematical model is proposed for conventional batteries, for compressed hydrogen tanks, for liquid hydrogen storage and for metal hydride tanks, which makes it possible to integrate energy storage systems into management strategies that aim to solve the energy balance in plants based on hybrid energy storage systems. From the technical point... [more]

The Conundrums of Illicit Crude Oil Refineries in Nigeria and Its Debilitating Effects on Nigeria’s Economy: A Legal Approach
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economy, illicit crude oil refineries, legal approach, Nigeria, oil revenues, oil thefts
Nigeria’s oil industry encounters crude oil theft in commercial quantities, which is often exported to neighbouring countries. This has occasioned a loss of revenue and has caused environmental pollution due to oil spillages. There is a need for a stringent legal framework to combat the menace caused by incessant crude oil thefts, pipeline vandalisation by militants, and inadequate maintenance of existing crude oil refineries. The study adopts doctrinal legal research methods and a conceptual approach with the consideration of primary and secondary sources of law, for instance, the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI Act 2007, International Conventions, law textbooks and peer-reviewed journals. The justification for using the method was to establish the trustworthiness of the findings on illicit crude oil refineries. The findings reveal that the Nigerian government has lost more than 150,000 barrels of crude oil daily valued at US... [more]

Using Bayesian Deep Learning for Electric Vehicle Charging Station Load Forecasting
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Bayesian deep learning, capture uncertainty, electric vehicle charging station, load forecasting, long short-term memory (LSTM) network
In recent years, replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles has been a significant option for supporting reducing carbon emissions because of fossil fuel shortage and environmental contamination. However, the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) can bring new and uncertain load conditions to the electric network. Precise load forecasting for EV charging stations becomes vital to reduce the negative influence on the grid. To this end, a novel day-ahead load forecasting method is proposed to forecast loads of EV charging stations with Bayesian deep learning techniques. The proposed methodological framework applies long short-term memory (LSTM) network combined with Bayesian probability theory to capture uncertainty in forecasting. Based on the actual operational data of the EV charging station collected on the Caltech campus, the experiment results show the superior performance of the proposed method compared with other methods, indicating significant potenti... Solar Irradiance Ramp Forecasting Based on All-Sky Imagers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: all-sky imagers, forecasting, ramp events, solar irradiance ramp event forecasting
Solar forecasting constitutes a critical tool for operating, producing and storing generated power from solar farms. In the framework of the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Program Task 16, the solar irradiance nowcast algorithms, based on five all-sky imagers (ASIs), are used to investigate the feasibility of ASIs to foresee ramp events. ASIs 1−2 and ASIs 3−5 can capture the true ramp events by 26.0−51.0% and 49.0−92.0% of the cases, respectively. ASIs 1−2 provided the lowest (<10.0%) falsely documented ramp events while ASIs 3−5 recorded false ramp events up to 85.0%. On the other hand, ASIs 3−5 revealed the lowest falsely documented no ramp events (8.0−51.0%). ASIs 1−2 are developed to provide spatial solar irradiance forecasts and have been delimited only to a small area for the purposes of this benchmark, which penalizes these approaches. These findings show that ASI-based nowcasts could be considered as a valuable tool for predicting solar irradiance r... [more]

Improving Kraft Pulp Mill Energy Efficiency through Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Carbonization of Biological Sludge
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, hydrothermal carbonization, kraft pulp mill, pulp industry, sludges
Of the various waste and side streams created in a kraft pulp mill, the biological sludges from the wastewater treatment plant are some of the most problematic to handle. Incineration is becoming a common solution as landfilling is no longer permitted by legislation in many countries, but this is also problematic due to the high moisture content, poor drying characteristics, and high ash content in the solids. This study evaluates the technical potential of mild hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) at 160 °C for 3 h to improve the energy efficiency of on-site incineration as a biosludge handling method. HTC treatment transforms wet organic substrates into a hydrophobic carbonaceous material (hydrochar). The heating value and elemental composition of both the sludge and the hydrochar product were analyzed. Based on this, a hydrothermal carbonization model developed earlier was adjusted for the feedstock, and process integration modelling performed to evaluate the performance impact on the p... [more]

Oil Prices and the Hydrocarbon Markets: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetries, hydrocarbon markets, oil price shocks, transmission channels
In this paper, we review the literature that investigates the impact of oil price shocks on the selected hydrocarbon prices. First, we present the empirical studies that presume, due to the global nature of the crude oil market, that the world oil price is an exogenous determining variable to the evolution of the local hydrocarbon markets such as natural gas or natural gas liquids (NGLs). Then, we present recent empirical studies that have improved our understanding of the source of oil price changes. They treat the real price of oil as an endogenous variable, identify the causes underlying oil price shocks, and then evaluate the impact of structural supply and demand shocks on the other hydrocarbon prices. The first strand of studies does not represent a consensus on the relationship between crude oil and other hydrocarbon prices—some demonstrate stable and asymmetric relationships, and some find no relationship or a very weak relationship. The second strand of studies shows that oil... [more]

Roadway excavation is the leading project in coal mining, and the cantilever roadheader is the main equipment in roadway excavation. Autonomous cutting by cantilever roadheaders is the key to realize safe, efficient and intelligent tunneling for underground roadways. In this paper, the working device of a cantilever roadheader was simplified into a series of translation or rotation joints, and the spatial pose model and spatial pose coordinate system of the roadheader were established. Using the homogeneous transformation matrix and the robot-related theory, the space pose transformation matrix of the roadheader and the space pose equation of the cutting head of the roadheader were derived. The forward kinematics and inverse kinematics of the cutting head were solved by using the D-H parameter method and an inverse transformation method. The location coordinates of the inflection point of the cutting process path for a rectangular roadway were determined, and cutting path planning and... [more]

Research on the Novel Flexible On-Load Voltage Regulator Transformer and Voltage Stability Analysis
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: On-Load Tap-Charger, transformer, voltage regulating effect, voltage stability
Voltage stability has always been a hot topic in power system research. Traditional On-Load Tap-Charger (OLTC) transformer is considered to play a very important role in the system voltage stability. However, in the heavy load of distribution network, the tap adjustment of OLTC transformer will lead to the shift of critical stable operating point, which bring the “negative voltage regulating effect” of voltage adjustment, and even cause the instability of system voltage. This paper presents a Flexible On-Load Voltage Regulation (OLVR) transformer based on power electronic technology. The Flexible On-Load Voltage Regulation (OLVR) transformer is a combination of Power Electronic Converter (PEC) and OLTC transformer, which can realize voltage step-less regulation and reactive power regulation. Meanwhile, the paper presents the equivalent models of distribution network with Flexible OLVR transformer and analyzes the critical operating point. Through the step-less voltage regulation contro... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CO2 gas reservoir, controlling factors, genesis, Hailar Basin
Gas reservoirs with high CO2 have been found in several wells in the Hailar Basin. In this paper, a composition analysis, stable carbon isotope analysis, and a rare gas helium isotope 3He/4He and argon isotope 40Ar/36Ar analysis were carried out. These comprehensive analyses show that the CO2 in the Hailar Basin is inorganic-origin gas, which generally has the characteristics of crust−mantle-mixed CO2, and the fraction of helium of mantle source can reach 15.12~18.76%. There are various types of CO2 gas reservoirs. CO2 gas mainly comes from deep crust. The distribution of gas reservoirs is mainly controlled by deep faults and volcanic rocks, as well as by reservoir properties and preservation conditions. Magmatic rocks provide gas source conditions for the formation of inorganic CO2 reservoirs. Deep−large faults provide the main migration channels for CO2 gas. A New Spoke PM Motor with ECC ASPs to Reduce Flux Density Harmonics
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: auxiliary salient poles (ASPs), eccentric (ECC), sound and vibration, torque pulsation
This paper proposes new eccentric (ECC) auxiliary salient poles (ASPs) applied in spoke permanent-magnet (PM) motors. These ECC ASPs optimize flux density harmonics and further reduce torque pulsation. Then, the optimization procedure is proposed to reveal the relationship between the ECC method and ASP, and optimization steps are reduced. Firstly, the design of the ECC ASPs is based on the stairs, which are equivalent to sinusoidal flux density. Second, the expressions of offset length for maximum air gap, pole arc angle, and thickness ratio are revealed. Through theoretical analysis and the finite element method (FEM), the proposed ECC ASPs can generate low torque pulsation and improve sound and vibration features.

A Concept of Risk Prioritization in FMEA of Fluid Power Components
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flow control valve, fluid power, FMEA, risk prioritization
FMEA is a widely used tool for decades and is also used as an industrial standard. However, there are two main drawbacks of this analysis that have been specified from the beginning. The first one is risk prioritization, which is expressed by a risk priority number (RPN). The RPN is a product of three factors with equal weight: severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D), which may produce equal risk priority for different combinations of S, O, and D. The second is the uncertainties caused by converting linguistic terms into quantitative data. The essential data used in the FMEA strongly depend on subjective experts’ opinions, knowledge, and experience. For decades, various attempts of overcoming these weaknesses have been made, not only by academics but also by industry. The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) have created an FMEA handbook that defines action priority (AP) depending on the combination of severity, occurrence, and detect... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fatigue load, linear active disturbance rejection control(LADRC), particle swarm optimization (PSO), pitch angle, total variation, wind turbine
With the participation of wind power in grid frequency modulation, the fatigue load of the wind turbine increases accordingly. A new control method that considers both fatigue load and output power of wind turbine (WT) is proposed in this paper. A linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is designed and applied for the pitch angle in the wind turbine load reduction control. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the wind turbine controller, and the total variation of the wind turbine shaft torque and tower bending moment is added to construct a new objective function to further reduce the fatigue load of the wind turbine. The design-optimized controller is validated on a 5 MW wind turbine in SimWindFarm. The simulation results show that the LADRC controller can accurately track the reference power of the wind turbine, reduce the pitch angle fluctuation of the wind turbine, reduce the fatigue load of the wind turbine, and improve... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, finite element analysis, Optimization, power transformers, superconductors
There were many promising superconducting materials discovered in the last decades that can significantly increase the efficiency of large power transformers. However, these large machines are generally custom-made and tailored to the given application. During the design process the most economical design should be selected from thousands of applicable solutions in a short design period. Due to the nonlinearity of the task, the cost-optimal transformer design, which has the smallest costs during the transformers’ planned lifetime, is usually not the design with the highest efficiency. Due to the topic’s importance, many simplified transformer models were published in the literature to resolve this problem. However, only a few papers considered this preliminary design optimization problem in the case of superconducting transformers and none of them made a comparison with a validated conventional transformer optimization model. A Variable Pressure Multi-Pressure Rail System Design for Agricultural Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural tractors and implements, energy savings, high pressure control system, multi-pressure rail system, throttle loss reduction
This paper presents a solution for reducing energy loss in the hydraulic control system of agricultural tractors and their implements. The solution is referred to as a multi-pressure rail (MPR) and provides power to the hydraulic functions following a pressure control logic, as opposed to the traditional flow control logic typical of hydraulic systems used in off-road vehicles. The proposed hydraulic control system allows for elimination of redundant flow control valves in the state-of-the-art system, which cause excessive throttling losses leading to poor overall energy efficiency. Related work on MPR technology targets construction vehicles, where the MPR solution can allow energy recovery during overrunning loads and better engine management. This paper alternatively addresses the case of agricultural applications where functions mostly operate under resistive load conditions with slow dynamics, which offers an opportunity to target throttle losses. For this purpose, the paper intro... [more]

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: ash melting behavior, biochar, continuous torrefaction, fuel ratio, pellets, pulp industry sludge, resource recovery, thermochemical conversion, torrefaction
Recently, under COP26, several countries agreed to phase-out coal from their energy systems. The torrefaction industry can take advantage of this, as the fuel characteristics of torrefied biomasses are comparable to those of coal. However, in terms of economic feasibility, torrefied biomass pellets are not yet competitive with coal without subsidies because of the high price of woody biomass. Thus, there is a need to produce torrefied pellets from low-cost feedstock; pulp industry sludge is one such feedstock. In this context, this study was focused on the torrefaction of pulp industry sludge. Torrefaction experiments were carried out using a continuous reactor, at temperatures of 250, 275, and 300 °C. The heating value of the sludge increased from 19 to 22 MJ/kg after torrefaction at 300 °C. The fixed carbon content increased from 16 wt.% for dried pulp sludge to 30 wt.% for torrefied pulp sludge.
