Aspects of Design in Low Voltage Resilient Grids—Focus on Battery Sizing and U Level Control with P Regulation in Microgrids of Energy Communities
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy community, microgrid, prosumer, resilience
Energy communities and their resiliency are both relatively new subjects of interest that need deeper analysis. The concepts are emerging in the current trend of energy decarbonization, combined with unpredictable external factors, such as extreme weather, or nearby conflicts, such as wars. To be resilient against electrical network supply outages or heavy blackouts, energy communities need appropriate design of their electrical microgrids to maintain an acceptable level of activity in both normal and critical situations. The paper deals with aspects of the design of the electrical network used by energy communities, seen as microgrids designed to offer an acceptable level of safe operation and energy resilience. While electrical network resilience covers both the public network (main grid) and local microgrid of an energy community, the paper focuses on the safe operation and resilience related to the local microgrid as a distinct goal from the one of preserving the main grid’s functi... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: driveline, high mobility vehicle, kinematic incompatibility, load identification, universal (Cardan) joint
This article presents an analysis of the driveline operation of a high-mobility Jelcz 442.32 wheeled vehicle, which uses rigid drive axles connected to drive shafts with two universal joints (another name for the Cardan joints) due to the occurrence of kinematic incompatibility. The conditions for the correct connection of the drive shafts with two universal joints (Cardan joints) were presented, and the kinematic ratio of the complete drive shaft was defined. In the analysis of kinematic incompatibility regarding (but not limited to) the method of loading the vehicle, selected characteristic conditions of vehicle movement and the initial values of the angular setting of the rigid driving axles in relation to the vehicle body were presented. It has been shown that, in the analyzed vehicle, the kinematic incompatibility in the driveline is constantly present, and the value of this incompatibility, represented by the temporary ratio of drive shafts, depends on, among other things, the wa... Impact of Adding Bioethanol and Dimethyl Carbonate on Gasoline Properties
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, dimethyl carbonate DMC, gasoline volatility, octane number, oxygenated fuel
Bioethanol and dimetyl carbonate (DMC) are considered alternative fuels and additives to the synthesis compounds used now, since bioethanol is a biofuel and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is non-toxic, biodegradable and can be produced in a cleaner way. In this study, the effect of adding dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethanol to gasoline on the volatility was investigated. The volatility was the main goal of this research but also, the effect on the antiknock properties was studied. Mixtures of gasoline with DMC or with bioethanol were prepared in different proportions of additive: 3%, 6% and 9% v/v. Additionally, mixtures with 3% v/v ethanol plus 3% or 6% v/v DMC, and3% DMC plus 6% v/v ethanol were prepared. For the volatility evaluation, the ASTM distillation curve and vapor pressure of these mixtures were determined experimentally in order to predict the performance of the resulting fuels. When adding oxygenated compounds, the increase in vapor pressure was proportional to the additive qua... [more]

Optimization of Coal Production Based on the Modeling of the Jig Operation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coal separation, hydrodynamic parameters, mineral processing, modeling of jig, quality parameters
This paper presents the jig operating properties of the selected final parameters of the hard coal concentrate. The quality parameters of the product, such as the yield and ash content, were evaluated in terms of the technical and hydrodynamic parameters of the jig’s operation. The research program included a series of experiments in which the efficiency and the amount of hutch water were changed. The variables selected and analyzed were divided into two categories, i.e., one related to the characteristics of the concentrate produced, and the other to the characteristics of the jig operation. Models were built for narrowed particle size fractions based on concentrate yield and ash content in the concentrate. In addition, a multidimensional analysis was performed, considering variables such as machine throughput, which was determined by the flow rate of the material, the amount of hutch water, the quality of the concentrate, and the amount of concentrate, as well as the accuracy of the... Generalized Method of Mathematical Prototyping of Energy Processes for Digital Twins Development
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twins, energy processes, mathematical prototyping method, symbolic regression, systems identification
The use of digital twins in smart power systems at the stages of the life cycle is promising. The dynamics of such systems (smart energy renewable sources, smart energy hydrogen systems, etc.), are determined mainly by the physical and chemical processes occurring inside the systems. The basis for developing digital twins is reliable mathematical models of the systems. In the present paper, the authors present a method of energy processes mathematical prototyping—an overall approach to modeling processes of various physical and chemical natures based on modern non-equilibrium thermodynamics, mechanics, and electrodynamics. Controlled parameters are connected with measured ones by developing a theoretically correct system of process dynamics equations with accuracy up to the experimentally studied properties of substances and processes. Subsequent transformation into particular mathematical models of a specific class of systems makes this approach widely applicable. The properties of su... [more]

Class Thresholds Pre-Definition by Clustering Techniques for Applications of ELECTRE TRI Method
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: class bounds and variations, clustering algorithms, multi-criteria sorting methods, multi-criteria sorting procedure
The sorting problem in the Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) has been used to address issues whose solutions involve the allocation of alternatives in classes. Traditional multi-criteria methods are commonly used for this task, such as ELECTRE TRI, AHP-Sort, UTADIS, PROMETHEE, GAYA, etc. While using these approaches to perform the sorting procedure, the decision-makers define profiles (thresholds) for classes to compare the alternatives within these profiles. However, most such applications are based on subjective tasks, i.e., decision-makers’ expertise, which sometimes might be imprecise. To fill that gap, in this paper, a comparative analysis using the multi-criteria method ELECTRE TRI and clustering algorithms is performed to obtain an auxiliary procedure to define initial thresholds for the ELECTRE TRI method. In this proposed methodology, K-Means, K-Medoids, Fuzzy C-Means algorithms, and Bio-Inspired metaheuristics such as PSO, Differential Evolution, and Genetic algorithm f... [more]

Impact of the Internal Combustion Engine Thermal State during Start-Up on the Exhaust Emissions in the Homologation Test
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold start, exhaust emission, gasoline vehicles, homologation driving cycles
Due to the increasingly restrictive exhaust emissions requirements from conventional vehicles, the internal combustion engine start-up seems to be most important part of engine operation. The period immediately after starting the engine is the time when the exhaust emissions are highest, thus, this aspect is currently subject to heavy analysis. The article evaluates the impact of the engine thermal state during its start-up for a Euro 5 emission class vehicle type approval test. The engine thermal state during start-up turned out to have a crucial influence (throughout the approval test) on the results of the hydrocarbons road emission (a difference of about 1500%) and the road emission of carbon monoxide (63%). The remaining road exhaust emission values were less sensitive to the thermal state of the engine during start-up—the nitrogen oxides emission value increased by 18% (for a cold start compared to a hot start), and the road fuel consumption (and thus the emission of carbon dioxi... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CST Studio, electromagnetic field shielding, EMC, EMI, shielding box, shielding effectiveness, shielding enclosure with aperture, subnanosecond high-power electromagnetic pulse
The most likely intentional high-power electromagnetic (EM) interference, threatening the operation of technologically advanced electronic infrastructure, will have the forms of sub- and nanosecond ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses, several hundred nanosecond pulses of attenuated sinusoids, and sub- and microsecond sinusoidal pulses. The protection of electronic objects against high-power EM pulses is provided by different types of metal enclosure shields with technological apertures, inside which sensitive electronic objects can be placed. These technological apertures allow external EM interference to penetrate into the enclosure, making the EM shielding imperfect. The EM protection against the EM pulses has been mainly assessed based on the so-called shielding effectiveness (SE) parameters. The SE parameters (SEe and SEm for the electric and magnetic fields, respectively) are useful for designing and comparing EM shields. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 emissions, district heating, heat pumps, natural refrigerants, Simulation
The implementation of renewable energy sources and heat pumps with natural refrigerants in the existing 3rd-generation district heating (DH) systems is a promising technology for the conversion to a 4th-generation DH system. This paper aims to investigate this transition through a case study for the existing DH system in Croatia. The district of Rijeka, which is considered in the case study, has an existing 3rd-generation DH system with a capacity of 9.2 MW, which was originally designed for a temperature regime of 130/70 °C and produces thermal energy from natural gas. In order to use heat pumps efficiently in such a system, the temperature of the distribution system and the energy consumption should be reduced. Trnsys software was used to perform complete dynamic simulations of the DH system. Used baseline models were validated according to the actual energy consumption reported by the heat supplier. Advanced Method of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems Designing to Forecast Onsite Operation—Part 2: Phenomenological Simulation to Recoup Refrigeration Energy
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air conditioning system, level of loading, load range, refrigeration capacity excess, threshold temperature
This paper focuses on the application of speed-regulated compressors (SRCs) to cover changeable heat loads with high efficiency in conventional air conditioning systems (ACS) as well as in the more advanced variable refrigerant flow (VRF)-type outdoor and indoor ACS. In reality, an SRC is an oversized compressor, although it can operate efficiently at part loads. The higher the level of regulated loads (LRL) of the SRC, the more the compressor is oversized. It is preferable to reduce the size of the SRC by covering the peak loads and recouping the excessive refrigeration energy reserved at decreased actual loads within the range of regulated loads. Therefore, the range of changeable loads is chosen as the object to be narrowed by using the reserved refrigeration capacity. Thus, the general fundamental approach of dividing the overall heat load range of the ACS into the ranges with changeable and unchangeable loads, as previously developed by the authors, is applied for the range of pri... Modelling Energy Data in a Generalized Additive Model—A Case Study of Colombia
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cubic splines, energy modelling, generalized additive models, Markov random fields, tensor product splines
Energy demand modelling is essential for reliable informing and framing energy policy decisions. More accurate modelling betters ensuring availability of energy and energy quality. Energy availability is related to energy access across the country and defines important economic measures such as energy poverty, which plays a critical role in developing countries. Energy quality is related to the reliability of the supply for correctly estimating energy needs. To incorporate spatial and temporal components of energy in a way that availability and quality are accurately assessed, this article discussed a number of suitable task methods for this (Second-generation GAMs with one-dimensional smoothers: Cyclic/Non-Cyclic Cubic Splines and two-dimensional smoothers: Markov Random Fields/Tensor Splines Interactions). The results showed that the complete consideration of both temporal and spatial aspects leads to a better fitted model which explains more of the data variation.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, Energy Efficiency, energy intensity, OECD, returns to scale
This study examines the energy intensity (EI), energy efficiency (EE), and economic growth, measured by the type of returns to scale (RTS), of 37 nations in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2000 to 2019. We apply a non-parametric approach to estimate the three measures from their consumption of four primary energy sources, such as coal, gas, oil, and zero emission (e.g., renewable and nuclear power) as inputs and gross domestic product (GDP) as an output. In this study, we have the two types of efficiency measures over time: window-based and cross-sectional-based measures. Three findings are identified from our empirical study. First, the operationally efficient group, including France, Iceland, Japan, Switzerland, UK, and USA, presented a stable status of full efficiency in the window-based efficiency measure. Water Content in Transformer Insulation System: A Review on the Detection and Quantification Methods
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Energy, insulation, quantification methods, transformer, water detection
Water can be an irritant to a power transformer, as it is recognized as a major hazard to the operation of transformers. The water content of a transformer insulation system comprises the water in the transformer insulation oil and in the cellulose paper. The increase in the water content in the insulation system leads to reduced breakdown voltage, accelerated aging of the oil−paper insulation system, and the possibility of producing bubbles at high temperatures. Therefore, various techniques have been applied to measure the water content in both oil and paper insulation. This article comprehensively reviews and analyzes the methods (technically or nontechnically) that have been used to monitor the water content in transformer insulation systems. Apart from discussing the advantages and major drawbacks of these methods, the accuracy, measurement time, and cost of each technique are also elucidated in this review. Experimental Investigation of Impacts of Initial Pressure Levels on Compression Efficiency and Dissolution in Liquid Piston Gas Compression
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage, compression efficiency, liquid piston, multistage gas compression
Understanding how the pressure level affects the efficiency of liquid piston gas compression is essential for a greater applicability of the technology in compressed air energy storage. To explore the impacts, compression starting at three different initial pressure levels (1, 2, 3 bar) with a pressure ratio of 2 is performed, and how isothermal compression efficiencies are affected depending on the initial pressures is analyzed. Under the experimental conditions, higher initial pressure leads to lower isothermal efficiency. Air dissolution during the compression is also investigated because the chamber is a pressure-varying and a liquid-containing environment, where the gas solubility changes during the process. Evaluating the dissolution is critical as it affects the energy output when the compressed air is expanded to regenerate the energy. The changes in the air mass and the retrievable volume of the air after expansion are quantified based on Henry’s law. For a compression at high... [more]

Keywords: energy storage system, photovoltaic generation, reliability
Extreme weather conditions and natural disasters (ND) are the main causes of power outages in the electric grid. It is necessary to strengthen the electrical power system’s resilience during these catastrophic occurrences, and microgrids may be seen as the best way to achieve this goal. In this paper, two different energy system scenarios were proposed for increasing the resiliency of the electric power system during random outages. In the first scenario, a diesel generator (DG) was used to deliver energy to key loads during grid disruptions, in conjunction with a utility electric grid (UEG) and local electric load (ELL). A grid-connected ad hoc microgrid (MG) with a photovoltaic (PV) system, a battery energy storage (BES) system, and local electric loads made up the second scenario. The PV system and the BES system were used to supply the key loads with electricity during the outage. The major aim of this research was to compare the two resilient-based systems from the perspectives of... [more]
