Grace Dehner, Mark K. McBeth, Rae Moss, Irene van Woerden
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, nuclear energy, nuclear waste, perceptions, zero-carbon
Nuclear energy is proposed as part of the solution to a net-zero carbon future. However, environmental issues with nuclear energy remain. In this study, a total of 1616 participants from across the U.S. stated their position on the following statements: “Nuclear energy is a clean energy source”, “Nuclear energy may be part of the solution to climate change”, “I am willing to accept the building of new nuclear power stations if it is environmentally friendly and had a zero-carbon footprint”, and “Nuclear power may lead to more pollution and environmental contamination”. Participants were also asked “Do you think nuclear energy is a zero-carbon energy?” Logistic regression was used to determine how concern around climate change and nuclear waste predicted participant responses. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to determine segments of respondents based on their perceptions of nuclear energy and the environment. Nuclear energy was perceived as being zero-carbon (74% agree), but not ne... [more]
I2OT-EC: A Framework for Smart Real-Time Monitoring and Controlling Crude Oil Production Exploiting IIOT and Edge Computing
Hazem Ramzey, Mahmoud Badawy, Mostafa Elhosseini, Adel A. Elbaset
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control, edge computing, industrial operations, Internet of Things, remote monitoring
The oil and gas business has high operating costs and frequently has significant difficulties due to asset, process, and operational failures. Remote monitoring and management of the oil field operations are essential to ensure efficiency and safety. Oil field operations often use SCADA or wireless sensor network (WSN)-based monitoring and control systems; both have numerous drawbacks. WSN-based systems are not uniform or are incompatible. Additionally, they lack transparent communication and coordination. SCADA systems also cost a lot, are rigid, are not scalable, and deliver data slowly. Edge computing and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) help to overcome SCADA’s constraints by establishing an automated monitoring and control system for oil and gas operations that is effective, secure, affordable, and transparent. The main objective of this study is to exploit the IIOT and Edge Computing (EC). This study introduces an I2OT-EC framework with flowcharts, a simulator, and system... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: hybrid PEMFC ship propulsion, hydrogen regulations, hydrogen storage, maritime hydrogen, maritime PEMFC projects, zero emission shipping
The interest in hybrid polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) fuelled by hydrogen in shipping has seen an unprecedented growth in the last years, as it could allow zero-emission navigation. However, technical, safety, and regulatory barriers in PEMFC ship design and operation are hampering the use of such systems on a large scale. While several studies analyse these aspects, a comprehensive and up-to-date overview on hydrogen PEMFCs for shipping is missing. Starting from the survey of past/ongoing projects on FCs in shipping, this paper presents an extensive review on maritime hydrogen PEMFCs, outlining the state of the art and future trends for hydrogen storage and bunkering, powertrain, and regulations. In addition to the need for a clear regulatory framework, future studies should investigate the development of an efficient fuel supply chain and bunkering facilities ashore. As for the onboard power system, health-conscious energy management, low-temperature heat recovery, a... [more]

Investigating Divergent Energy Policy Fundamentals: Warfare Assessment of Past Dependence on Russian Energy Raw Materials in Europe
Tomasz P. Wiśniewski
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy dependence, energy policy, energy raw materials
The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting warfare within direct proximity to the European Union (EU) have significantly changed the conditions of Europe’s energy policy. Consequently, the energy security agencies and governments have been deliberating over an energy trilemma: the problem of balancing affordability, security, and environmental considerations, with much greater ramifications than before the breakout of the current military conflict. The past structural similarities and differences of the EU member states’ dependence on Russian energy raw materials, and the factors that might have determined those differences, may be among the key drivers of future energy policy choices in Europe and the prospective paths of the European Green Deal (EGD). Historical convergence might encourage an EGD consensus, while divergent past patterns might not allow for such a single direction throughout the EU. The multifaceted research proposed in this paper, from descriptive statistics t... [more]

Keywords: 5G technology, communication protocols, distributed systems, energy management, microgrids, wireless networks
Microgrids have a lot to offer, including helping smart grids operate on distribution grids or bringing electricity to some cities. The management system receives and transmits different states. This is because the elements adapt to the conditions of the network in the shortest possible time. The 5G communication technology has high transmission speed, owing to which it can improve equipment connectivity and reduce latency, allowing the real-time analysis and monitoring of electrical microgrids considerably better than earlier generations. In addition, it is estimated that, in the near future, many cities will be connected using communication systems that allow the interconnection of different systems safeguarding the connectivity, speed, and response time of these elements in an electrical system, smart grid, or microgrids with the growing development of the Internet of Things. For this reason, it is essential to analyze the integration of 5G technology to improve the management of mi... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1M5P, d1MxP, photovoltaic technology, solar cell, solar cell equivalent model, solar energy
Solar cell equivalent circuit modelling is usually based on continuous I-V models, with a set of data obtained by analytical expressions. This work proposes an almost discrete novel mathematical method and correspondent electrical model, based on the I-V curve adjustment at every two adjacent points. It is based on the discretisation of any diode model behaviour, such as the 1M5P (also known as 1D5P) or the 1M7P (also known as 2D7P). For this reason, the model is named d1MxP, meaning that it is a discrete (d) model (1M) with x parameters (xP). The modelling methodology validation process uses experimental data already published in the literature. According to the presented results, the proposed method shows increased accuracy when compared to the 1M5P or 1M7P equivalent models. The accuracy on the maximum power point and fill factor determination is relevant, resulting in an improvement of up to 3.34% in the maximum power, up to 5.70% in its voltage and up to 8.20% in its current, for... Jikai Sun, Mingrui Chen, Linghe Kong, Zhijian Hu, Veerapandiyan Veerasamy
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BP neural network, load frequency control, particle swarm optimization algorithm, sudden load disturbance, wind power generation
The large-scale integration of wind turbines (WTs) in renewable power generation induces power oscillations, leading to frequency aberration due to power unbalance. Hence, in this paper, a secondary frequency control strategy called load frequency control (LFC) for power systems with wind turbine participation is proposed. Specifically, a backpropagation (BP)-trained neural network-based PI control approach is adopted to optimize the conventional PI controller to achieve better adaptiveness. The proposed controller was developed to realize the timely adjustment of PI parameters during unforeseen changes in system operation, to ensure the mutual coordination among wind turbine control circuits. In the meantime, the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is utilized to adjust the initial neuron weights of the neural network, which can effectively improve the convergence of optimization. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IPSO-BP-PI controller performed ev... [more]

Keywords: ITAE, LFC, multiple source power system, Optimization, PID controller
For power system engineers, automated load frequency control (LFC) for multi-area power networks has proven a difficult problem. With the addition of numerous power generation sources, the complexity of these duties becomes even more difficult. The dynamic nature of linked power networks with varied generating sources, such as gas, thermal, and hydropower plants, is compared in this research. For the study to be more accurate, frequency and tie-line power measurements are used. For precise tuning of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller gains, the Bald Eagle Sparrow search optimization (BESSO) technique was used. The BESSO algorithm was created by combining the characteristics of sparrows and bald eagles. The performance of BESSO is determined by comparing its findings to those acquired using traditional approaches. In terms of Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE), which is the most important criterion used to reduce system error, the findings presented in this study indicat... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: distributed parameter, dry type transformer, ultra-fast transient overvoltage, voltage distribution, winding structure optimisation
To address the problem of winding turn-to-turn breakdown faults in 35 kV dry-type transformers in wind farms under overvoltage conditions, this paper establishes a simulation model based on the structural dimensions and material parameters of the transformer windings. The winding distribution parameters were calculated using the finite element method. The transient processes inside the high-voltage coil were calculated by constructing a multi-conductor transmission line model (MTL) that took into account the influence of the secondary winding. The voltage distribution of the winding was analysed for both lightning shock and extra-fast transient overvoltage conditions. The simulation results show that the maximum overvoltage between turns of the transformer winding under lightning shock is 5.282 kV; the maximum overvoltage between turns of the winding under very fast transient overvoltage is 11.6 kV, which occurs between the first 2−3 layers of the section, close to the insulation break... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: development strategy, main controlling factors, numerical simulation, shale gas
Gas reservoir numerical simulation is an important method to optimize the development strategy of shale gas reservoirs which has been influenced by the multi-stage fracture. The regular fracture network model was used to build a conventional numerical simulation, in which it was difficult to show the true situation of fracture propagation. However, the physical parameters not only affect the production, but also influence the stimulation effect; moreover, the quality of the fracturing effect also affects the production which causes the input and out parameters to be inaccurate. To solve this problem, the process simulation must be completed from geology to engineering to gas reservoir. The main controlling factors of production are identified with geological and engineering factors such as horizontal stage length, the volume of fracturing fluid, well spacing, production allocation, and proppant mass. Therefore, on the basis of the integrated simulation method of a hydraulic fracturing... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive methods, double-diffusion, finger convection, finite elements, stabilization methods
Double-diffusive convection plays an important role in many physical phenomena of practical importance. However, the numerical simulation of these phenomena is challenging since fine meshes are often required to capture the flow physics. Hence, several different numerical methods have been employed in the past. This work reports the development and application of an adaptive finite element method for the simulation of these phenomena, thereby avoiding the need for the use of very fine meshes over the whole domain. The weak formulation of the conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species concentration is used. The Boussinesq approximation relates the density of the fluid to the temperature and/or the species concentration. A second-order backward difference method is used for time discretization and the Galerkin method is employed for spatial discretization. Both adaptive time step and grid refinement techniques are employed, and the code is parallelized using MPI. Three... [more]

Keywords: comparative study, lithium-ion battery, multi-objective analysis decision method, recurrent neural network, state of charge
The precise estimation of the state of charge (SOC) is fundamental to the reliable operation of lithium-ion batteries. The development of deep learning techniques makes it possible to employ advanced methods to estimate a battery’s SOC. In order to better utilize a recurrent neural network (RNN) for battery SOC estimation, this paper conducts a comparative study of SOC estimation methods based on different RNN models. First, a general framework for deep-learning-based SOC estimation is undertaken, followed by the description of four kinds of RNNs employed in the estimation. Then, the estimation performances of these RNN models are compared under three scenarios, including the SOC estimation accuracy, the adaptability against different battery aging statuses, and the robustness against measurement uncertainties, in which the estimation performances of different RNN models are quantitively evaluated. Finally, a multiple-criteria decision-making method based on the analytic hierarchy proc... [more]

Keywords: circuit analysis, numerical analysis, power and efficiency maximization, skin effect, wireless power transfer
The article shows an analysis of the influence of the skin effect on the maximum efficiency and maximum power of a receiver in a wireless power transfer system (WPT). For this purpose, the original solution of the WPT system was used, which contained periodically arranged planar coils. The results concern the multi-variant analysis of the WPT system. The geometry of the coils was taken into account, i.e., the size of coils, the number of turns, as well as the distance between the transmitting and receiving coils. The calculations were carried out over the frequency range of 0.1−1 MHz. In order to analyse the influence of the skin effect on the proposed WPT system, two approaches were used: analytical and numerical. The article analyses the appropriate selection of load impedance in order to obtain maximum efficiency or maximum power of the receiver. In this analysis, the influence of the skin effect on each of the two operating procedures was examined. The obtained analytical and numer... [more]

Keywords: collector testing, compound parabolic collector, concentrating photovoltaic solar collector, half-size bifacial photovoltaic cells, phosphorus-passivated emitter rear totally diffused cells
A two-trough parabolic-shaped concentrating photovoltaic solar collector with a vertical half-size ‘phosphorus-passivated emitter rear totally diffused’ bifacial cell string receiver was designed and built for household applications, with the aim of smooth the electrical ‘duck curve’. The study consisted in testing the concentrating photovoltaic solar collector outdoors, under real weather conditions, for its daily electrical peak power and efficiency, as well as for its electrical transversal and longitudinal Incidence Angle Modifier direction. The outdoor testing measurements were conducted in a parabolic trough with low concentration coupled with a central vertical half-size ‘phosphorus-passivated emitter rear totally diffused’ bifacial cell string receiver. Furthermore, the electrical transversal Incidence Angle Modifier showed to be very delicate due to the position and outline of the receiver, which led to an electrical peak efficiency close to 10% at ±25° (i.e., for an electrica... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bio-oil, biochar, intermediate pyrolysis, LCA, pyro-gas, zeolite catalyst
Biowaste valorization is a means for tackling resource depletion and climate change, which gives rise to environmental benefits and economic growth. One of the most known technological routes to convert biowaste into bioproducts is pyrolysis, which may conduct with and without catalyst application. The purpose of this study was to investigate an early-stage life-cycle assessment (LCA) for catalytic intermediate pyrolysis to valorize rapeseed meal, split over the scenarios using ZSM-5 and zeolite Y catalysts. Four selected environmental impact categories were assessed by IMPACT 2002+ methodology. The results revealed that the ZSM-5 catalytic pyrolysis led to bigger environmental impacts than the pyrolysis utilizing zeolite Y in all compared impact categories except global warming. The scenario that involved zeolite Y had around 20% GHG intensity greater than ZSM-5 pyrolysis. The bulk of GHG emissions mostly involved CO2 and methane generated from electricity consumption, which was provi... [more]

Keywords: assessment, automated driving, autonomous vehicle, Model Predictive Control, nonlinear control, traffic light crossing
Recent advancements in automated driving technology and vehicle connectivity are associated with the development of advanced predictive control systems for improved performance, energy efficiency, safety, and comfort. This paper designs and compares different linear and nonlinear model predictive control strategies for a typical scenario of urban driving, in which the vehicle is approaching a traffic light crossing. In the linear model predictive control (MPC) case, the vehicle acceleration is optimized at every time instant on a prediction horizon to minimize the root-mean-square error of velocity tracking and RMS acceleration as a comfort metric, thus resulting in a quadratic program (QP). To tackle the vehicle-distance-related traffic light constraint, a linear time-varying MPC approach is used. The nonlinear MPC formulation is based on the first-order lag description of the vehicle velocity profile on the prediction horizon, where only two parameters are optimized: the time constan... Keywords: low-frequency radiation interference, magnetic dipole, near-field measurement, powerful electromagnetic equipment, the equivalent dipole method
With the wide application of power equipment consisting of high switching frequencies and large current switching devices in the integrated power system on ships, the low-frequency radiation interference caused by the powerful electromagnetic equipment becomes more and more serious. Establishing an equivalent model of radiation interference based on the near-field measurement data is the key to subsequent electromagnetic compatibility design. Due to the large size of the equipment, there will be many measurement points in the near-field measurement area, which leads to long testing times and low modeling efficiency. To solve the above problems, this article first proposes a method of near-field measurement and a modeling method of powerful electromagnetic equipment radiation based on field distribution characteristics. Firstly, the near-field measurement data are obtained by the sparse and uniform sampling of the near-field measurement plane at large sampling intervals. Then, the near-... [more]

Keywords: blade reverse engineering, horizontal-axis wind turbine (HWAT), pitch control algorithm, small wind turbine (SWT), stall control algorithm, variable speed fixed pitch(VSFP)
In this study, a power control algorithm of a variable-speed fixed-pitch horizontal-axis lift-type 20 kW small wind turbine (SWT) was proposed and verified through dynamic simulations. The power control algorithm proposed in this study consists of algorithms for Region II to track the maximum power coefficient, for Region II-1/2 to maintain the rated rotor speed, and for Region III to maintain the rated power. To verify the proposed power control algorithm, simulations were performed at the rated wind speed and above the rated wind speed, to which turbulence intensity based on the IEC regulation’s normal turbulence model was applied. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed controller operates properly in the whole three regions including Regions II, II-1/2, and III. The controller performance was then compared with the variable-speed variable-pitch power controller. Although the performance of the proposed controller was considered good for the target VSVP wind turbine, it was... [more]
Performance Assessment of Cellulose Paper Impregnated in Nanofluid for Power Transformer Insulation Application: A Review

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ageing, cellulose paper, electrical properties, nanofluid, surface charge
Insulation cellulose paper is a basic measure for a power transformer’s remaining useful life, and its advantageous low cost, electrical, and mechanical properties have made it an extensive insulation system when impregnated in a dielectric liquid. Cellulose paper deteriorates as a result of ageing due to some chemical reactions like pyrolysis (heat), hydrolysis (moisture), and oxidation (oxygen) that affects its degree of polymerization. The condition analysis of cellulose paper has been a major concern since the collection of paper samples from an operational power transformer is almost impossible. However, some chemicals generated during cellulose paper deterioration, which were dissolved in dielectric liquid, have been used alternatively for this purpose as they show a direct correlation with the paper’s degree of polymerization. Furthermore, online and non-destructive measurement of the degree of polymerization by optical sensors has been proposed recently but is yet to be availab... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentric annular channel, superposition method, turbulent convective heat transfer, various thermal boundary conditions
Turbulent convective heat-transfer characteristics in a concentric annular channel with both walls heated are theoretically modeled and numerically computed in this article. Generalized algebraic predictive models and equations for heating over a single wall are first reviewed by summarizing the well-known methods in the literature. These methods are then scrutinized according to the most recent investigations such that new viewpoints and corrections are introduced accordingly. Moreover, the application of superposition in temperature is used in the current work instead of the Nusselt number as seen in the literature. The numerical integration method is applied to the generalized equations to obtain the solutions, which are found to be in decent agreement with the direct numerical simulation (DNS) data in the literature. The results in this work also indicate that the wall heat flux density ratio and the annular radius ratio are two key factors that have a great influence on the heat-t... [more]

Keywords: electromechanical modeling, gyroscopes, piezoelectricity, vibration energy harvesting
Given its versatility in drawing power from many sources in the natural world, piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) has become increasingly popular. However, its energy harvesting capacities could be enhanced further. Here, a mathematical model that accurately simulates the dynamic behavior and energy harvested can facilitate further improvements in the performance of piezoelectric devices. One of the goals of this study is to create a dependable reduced-order model of a multi-purpose gyroscope. This model will make it possible to compute the harvested voltage and electrical power in a semi-analytical manner. The harvested voltage is often modeled as an average value across the whole electrode surface in piezoelectric devices. We propose a model which provides practical insights toward optimizing the performance of the system by considering a spatially varying electric field across the electrode surface length. Our framework allows investigation of the limits of applicability of the m... [more]
