February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: overpressure, pressure relief, seepage
At present, great progress has been made in the prediction of undercompaction and fluid expansion overpressure. However, in recent years, the field has frequently encountered pressure relief-type overpressure. Different from primary overpressure, such as undercompaction and fluid expansion, this type of overpressure belongs to secondary overpressure, which has a certain concealment in response to seismic velocity and logging data. Based on this, a geological analysis model of pressure relief-type overpressure was established according to the seepage and stress coupling theory. The model can realize the prediction of pressure relief range and pressure distribution, which provides a new way to predict this kind of overpressure. The influence of the laws of porosity, permeability, and geological movement on pressure relief were analyzed. The research results provide a new method for the prediction of pressure relief-type overpressure and improving the basic guarantee of safe and efficient... [more]

Keywords: 3D magnetic field analysis, finite element simulation, loss separation, motor loss distribution
As an important component of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, the air compressor with an air foil bearing rotates at tens of thousands of revolutions per minute. The heat generation concentration problem caused by the high-speed motor loss seriously affects the safe and normal operation of the motor, so it is very important to clarify the loss distribution of the high-speed motor and adopt a targeted loss reduction design for air compressor heat dissipation. In this paper, for an air compressor with a foil bearing with a rated speed of 80,000 rpm, an empirical formula and a three-dimensional transient magnetic field finite element model are used to model and calculate the air friction loss, stator core loss, winding loss and permanent magnet eddy current loss. The accuracy of the analytical calculation method is verified by torque test experiments under different revolutions, and the average simulation accuracy can reach 91.1%. Then, the distribution of the air friction loss, stator core l... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: constant speed, hydraulic drive, overshoot, PID
The paver needs superior constant speed performance when paving the pavement. In order to effectively reduce the paver speed fluctuation of the paver, and the wandering deviation from the predetermined track during the paving operation, a control scheme of paver travelling system based on GNSS, Global Navigation Satellite System, is proposed; the scheme can realize open-loop control, closed-loop control, and deviation correction control according to the driver’s choice. During closed-loop control, the setting value and the PID controller output of the left wheel are combined to control the speed of the left wheel, as is the closed-loop control of the right wheel. During the deviation correction control, the coordinate provided by the RTK GNSS receiver and the predetermined trajectory line are used to calculate the lateral deviation of the paver. The lateral deviation is input to the right wheel navigation correction PID algorithm. After the calculation, the correction value of the righ... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel cell vehicle, hydrogen rapid charging, numerical modelling, Type III gas vessel
As a fuel for power generation, high-pressure hydrogen gas is widely used for transportation, and its efficient storage promotes the development of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). However, as the filling process takes such a short time, the maximum temperature in the storage tank usually undergoes a rapid increase, which has become a thorny problem and poses great technical challenges to the steady operation of hydrogen FCVs. For security reasons, SAE J2601/ISO 15869 regulates a maximum temperature limit of 85 °C in the specifications for refillable hydrogen tanks. In this paper, a two-dimensional axisymmetric and a three-dimensional numerical model for fast charging of Type III, 35 MPa, and 70 MPa hydrogen vehicle cylinders are proposed in order to effectively evaluate the temperature rise within vehicle tanks. A modified standard k-ε turbulence model is utilized to simulate hydrogen gas charging. The equation of state for hydrogen gas is adopted with the thermodynamic properties taken fro... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: particle swarm optimization (PSO), power system, probabilistic neural network (PNN), transformer fault diagnosis
A transformer is an important part of the power system. Existing transformer fault diagnosis methods are still limited by the accuracy and efficiency of the solution and excessively rely on manpower. In this paper, a novel neural network is designed to overcome this issue. Based on the traditional method of judging the ratio of dissolved gas in transformer internal insulation oil, a fast fault diagnosis model of a transformer was built with an improved probabilistic neural network (PNN). The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to find the global optimal smoothing factor and improve the fault diagnosis accuracy of PNN. The transformer fault diagnosis model based on improved PNN not only eliminates the influence of human subjective factors but also significantly improves the diagnosis speed and accuracy, meeting the requirements for real-time application in practical projects. The feasibility and effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper are illustrated by a cas... [more]

Eric Otto, Robert Dürr, Achim Kienle
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agglomeration, bifurcation analysis, fluidized bed, granulation, layering growth
Particle formation in fluidized beds is widely applied in an industrial context for the solidification of liquids and size enlargement of granular materials. The two main size-enlargement mechanisms are layering growth and agglomeration. For continuous process configurations with sieve-mill-recycle and layering growth only, the occurrence of undesired self-sustained oscillations in the particle size distribution under certain process conditions is well-known. This contribution investigates the stability of the practically relevant process with additional particle agglomeration by means of a model-based numerical bifurcation analysis. It is shown that the occurrence of stable limit cycles is inhibited by an increased rate of particle agglomeration for a variety of different process conditions and different agglomeration kinetics. These results enhance the understanding of the agglomeration and layering growth dynamics and are relevant for the process design and operation.

Keywords: adsorbent materials, calorimetry, cisplatin, isotherms, platinum recycling, water treatment
Despite the globally increasing use of platinum-based cytostatic drugs in the treatment of several types of cancer, only limited attention has been paid to developing a treatment for contaminated liquid samples originating from hospitals, laboratories and manufacturing facilities before and after their administration. In this work, we assess the efficiency of a low-cost adsorbent material, a dithiocarbamate-functionalized silica, in removing cisplatin from a solution containing it in the 0.5−150 mg L−1 concentration range. The advantage of having a surface-functionalized silica is that adsorption can occur by either non-covalent interaction or surface complexation. In the latter case platinum(II) is de-complexed and the original drug is no longer present. Adsorption occurs through a first rapid step, followed by a second slower process. This is likely due to the fact that in our operating conditions (0.9% w/v NaCl), only the original compound is present, for which ligand substitution i... [more]

Keywords: flow ratio of groundwater, in situ uranium leaching, natural groundwater, numerical simulation, open flow field
This paper aims to quantitatively analyze the influence of natural groundwater flowing into the flow field of in situ leaching mining. The computational method was built to evaluate the effect of natural groundwater on the production efficiency of pumping wells for the in situ leaching of uranium, and the “flow ratio of groundwater” and related formulas were defined. C1 and C2 mining areas of an in situ leaching uranium mine in Inner Mongolia were taken as an example, and the effect on the “flow ratio of groundwater” when changing the flow quantity of injection wells and the position and length of the filter in the pumping and injection wells were compared. The results show that the variation in the “flow ratio of groundwater” of a whole mining area or a single pumping well in different production stages can be obtained by the neutral solution concentration value from the mining area’s numerical simulation. Regulating the position, length of the filter, and mode of fluid injection in a... [more]

Keywords: drying, mathematical models, pumpkin, ultrasonics
Innovations in food drying processes are usually aimed at reducing drying time and improving the overall properties of dried products. These are important issues from an economic and environmental point of view and can contribute to the sustainability of the whole process. In this study, the effects of ultrasonic treatment on the drying kinetics of pumpkin pulp are investigated, and mathematical models to predict the drying kinetics are analyzed and optimized. The results show that ultrasonic pretreatment significantly reduces drying time from 451 to 268 min, with optimal processing parameters at 90% of the maximum ultrasonic power and a processing time of 45 min. The total color change of the samples was the lowest at the obtained optimal processing parameters. Based on the values (RMSE and R2) of the investigated mathematical drying models, it was found that the Weibull model is the best fit for the experimental data and is considered suitable for the drying kinetics of ultrasonicall... Keywords: bearing model, control technology, dynamic pressure roadway, floor heave
In order to study the influencing factors of floor deformation and floor heave mechanisms of deep mining roadways, this paper takes the deep dynamic pressure mining roadway of a mine as the engineering background and adopts a research method combining theoretical analyses, numerical simulations and field observations to study the influence of various factors on floor deformation and floor heave mechanisms. It is determined that the influencing factors on floor heave are a large buried depth, a long duration of dynamic pressure, unique characteristics of the surrounding rock and an insufficient support strength. A bearing mechanics model of the roadway floor beam is established, and it is determined that the displacement of the roadway floor is negatively correlated with the elastic modulus and floor thickness and positively correlated with the buried depth of roadway, the roadway width and the width of fracture zone. A numerical simulation method is used to study the influence of the o... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: initial population, interior point method, mean-variance mapping optimization, meta-heuristics techniques, opposite gradient method
The aim of optimization methods is to identify the best results in the search area. In this research, we focused on a mixture of the interior point method, opposite gradient method, and mean-variance mapping optimization, named IPOG-MVMO, where the solutions can be obtained from the gradient field of the cost function on the constraint manifold. The process was divided into three main phases. In the first phase, the interior point method was applied for local searching. Secondly, the opposite gradient method was used to generate a population of candidate solutions. The last phase involved updating the population according to the mean and variance of the solutions. In the experiments on real parameter optimization problems, three types of functions, which were unimodal, multimodal, and continuous composition functions, were considered and used to compare our proposed method with other meta-heuristics techniques. The results showed that our proposed algorithms outperformed other algorith... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compacted core, indentation experiment, PEEQ, rock damage, wedge tooth
In the oil and gas drilling industry, cemented carbide teeth are one of the most widely used rock-breaking elements. In order to reveal the rock damage mechanism of tooth indentation, a series of tooth indentation experiments were conducted in this study, and an indentation simulation was also conducted as a supplement to the experiment. In the experiment, a new method to observe the inner damage status of the rock was put forward, i.e., utilizing the splitting action of the teeth to avoid unexpected rock damage that may affect the actual experiment results. The load-displacement curves and the damage status of the rock revealed that the wedge tooth was more efficient in fracturing and damaging the rock because the load requirement of the wedge tooth was lower, the narrow tooth crown generated larger specific stress in the rock; that rock-breaking advantage of the wedge tooth resulted from the occurrence of the compacted core and the tension stress generated by the core. Water shortages and water pollution have seriously threatened the sustainable development of the community. The grid-connected microbial fuel cell is an effective way to control the cost of wastewater treatment plants. Moreover, it solves the problem of low efficiency and high energy consumption. In view of the characteristics of strong coupling, non-linearity, and internal load in the process of microbial fuel cell grid connection, it is necessary to design the grid-connected unit of power electronic device. Based on the establishment of the microbial fuel cell stack model, the stability control and the constant power control scheme were designed for the chopper and inverter, respectively. The simulation results showed that the control strategy with the combination of voltage stabilizer and constant power can make a grid-connected system of all phase voltage and frequency output. The three-phase voltage Uabc was steady at 7 h and the voltage amplitude was controlled at roughly 380 V,... [more]

Keywords: Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, gel-state electrolytes, nanoclay, poly (methyl methacrylate), β-substituted Zn-porphyrins
The presence of a liquid electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is known to limit the time stability of these devices due to leakage and evaporation phenomena. To overcome this issue, gel-state electrolytes may represent a good solution in order to maintain stability and good performances, albeit at lower costs. In the present work, two different kinds of gel-electrolytes, based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and nanoclay agents, were investigated in DSSC-devices sensitized using β-substituted Zn-porphyrins (namely ZnPC4 and ZnPC12) with enveloping alkoxy chains of different lengths, able to produce a coverage of the photoanode surface. The highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) values equal to 1.06 ± 0.04% and 1.55 ± 0.26% were obtained for ZnPC12 (with longer alkoxy chains) with PMMA- and nanoclay-based electrolytes respectively. The properties of the photoanode/electrolyte interface as well as the influence of the gelling agents on the final properties of the obt... [more]

Keywords: demand network, maintenance, resilient supply chain strategies, risk management, supply chain resilience, supply network
The present era is characterised by many events that have influences on supply chains and supply networks. This concerns, e.g., war, epidemics, natural disasters, accidents, strikes, political instability, and political sanctions. These are generally grouped under the term “disruption”. In order to avoid the risk of supply chain disruption, major disruption of supply networks, or loss of customers associated with disruptions, it is necessary to take preventive and proactive measures in supply chain management in terms of planning. This paper is intended to briefly summarise the current state of knowledge with the most important facts and derive a new definition from it. In addition, an analogy to maintenance is established for the first time. In doing so, a comparison of the concepts and a listing of the important proactive measures derived from them for increasing resilience are made. In the course of this, the field of action considered is extended from the exchange of suppliers thro... [more]

Keywords: bamboo fiber, biotemplate, CaO-based material, sintering resistance, thermal energy storage
The high-temperature sintering of CaO-based materials leads to the serious decay of energy storage performance during the calcination/carbonation cycle. To overcome the loss in porosity problem, an efficient CaO-based material for thermal energy storage was synthesized using bamboo fiber as the biotemplate. The synthesis parameters (bamboo fiber addition, pyrolysis, Al2O3 loading) and the energy storage reaction characteristics of CaO-based energy storage material were optimized on the basis of cyclic calcination/carbonation experiments. The results show that the sacrificed biotemplate enhances the porosity of the synthetic material, denoting improved energy storage density. The cumulative energy storage density of the templated material over 50 cycles is 24,131.44 kJ/kg higher than that of limestone. The carbonation conversion and energy storage density of the templated CaO-based material doped with 5 wt.% Al2O3 and 0.5 g bamboo fiber reach 0.75 mol/mol and 2368.82 kJ/kg after 10 cycl... [more]

Steam solvent co-injection processes are generating considerable interest in terms of improving heavy oil upgrading in unconventional reservoirs. The characteristics of the opted solvents in the field have not been dealt with in depth. This paper presents a study on selecting the most optimal solvent for the Akan oilfield enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The first step in this work consisted of determining the Akan oil field viscosity, through an elemental and SARA analyses. Next, a set of physical and chemical methods was used to understand the mechanism of solvents’ effect on oil viscosity dynamics. The compositions of the used solvents were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer system equipped with a mass selective detector ISQ (USA). The evidence from the present study suggests that toluene and o-xylene are the most optimal solvents for enhancing the Akan oil recovery and reducing its viscosity. The obtained data demonstrated a higher efficiency of the used solvents on the... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: anammox, bioremediation, DNRA, nitrogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has shown success in past years for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater containing inorganic nutrients (i.e., nitrogen). However, the increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated matrices calls for new strategies for efficient and environmentally sustainable remediation. Therefore, the present review examined the literature on the connection between the anammox process and PAHs using VOSviewer to shed light on the mechanisms involved during PAH biodegradation and the key factors affecting anammox bacteria. The scientific literature thoroughly discussed here shows that PAHs can be involved in nitrogen removal by acting as electron donors, and their presence does not adversely affect the anammox bacteria. Anammox activity can be improved by regulating the operating parameters (e.g., organic load, dissolved oxygen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and external supplementation (i.e., calcium nitrate) that promote changes in... Seagrass beds are considered to be substantial sinks of “blue carbon”. However, differentiation in the carbon sink capacities of seagrass beds in different regions with distinct nutrient conditions remains unclear. In this study, sediment carbon stocks, seagrass biomass, and microbial community structures and potential functions of seagrass beds in eutrophic seawater adjacent to Hainan Island and oligotrophic seawater around the Xisha Islands were compared. Our results showed that sediment mineralizable organic carbon and dry bulk density were substantially higher on Hainan Island than on the Xisha Islands (t-test, p < 0.05), while sediment carbon stocks and the total organic carbon were comparable between the two regions (p > 0.05). Similarly, seagrass biomass was much higher on Hainan Island (p < 0.05). Sediment carbon stocks positively correlated with sediment nitrogen and negatively correlated to sediment pH and grain size (p < 0.05). Bacterial diversities were similar in the... [more]

Keywords: earliness and tardiness, mixed-integer programming, no-wait flow shop scheduling problem, parallel simulated annealing, production scheduling
In this paper, the no-wait flow shop problem with earliness and tardiness objectives is considered. The problem is proven to be NP-hard. Recent no-wait flow shop problem studies focused on familiar objectives, such as makespan, total flow time, and total completion time. However, the problem has limited studies with solution approaches covering the concomitant use of earliness and tardiness objectives. A novel methodology for the parallel simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to solve this problem in order to overcome the runtime drawback of classical simulated annealing and enhance its robustness. The well-known flow shop problem datasets in the literature are utilized for benchmarking the proposed algorithm, along with the classical simulated annealing, variants of tabu search, and particle swarm optimization algorithms. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the runtime and robustness of the algorithms. The results revealed the enhancement of the classical simulated anne... [more]
