Analysis of CO2 Drivers and Emissions Forecast in a Typical Industry-Oriented County: Changxing County, China
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: county level, energy consumption, LMDI, peak CO2 emissions, scenario analysis, STIRPAT
Decomposing main drivers of CO2 emissions and predicting the trend of it are the key to promoting low-carbon development for coping with climate change based on controlling GHG emissions. Here, we decomposed six drivers of CO2 emissions in Changxing County using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method. We then constructed a model for CO2 emissions prediction based on a revised version of the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) model and used it to simulate energy-related CO2 emissions in five scenarios. Results show that: (1) From 2010 to 2017, the economic output effect was a significant, direct, dominant, and long-term driver of increasing CO2 emissions; (2) The STIRPAT model predicted that energy structure will be the decisive factor restricting total CO2 emissions from 2018 to 2035; (3) Low-carbon development in the electric power sector is the best strategy for Changxing to achieve low-carbon development. Impact of Electric Bus Charging on Distribution Substation and Local Grid in Warsaw
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution grid, electric buses, electromobility, power system, public transport, smart city
Electric buses are increasingly appearing on the streets of cities around the world. Thus, it is necessary to consider the impact of their charging on the distribution system operation, especially near the charging point. This article presents the problems that may arise while new charging points are connected. Research was carried out on the existing charging point at Spartańska Street in Warsaw, which allowed to obtain daily bus charging profiles and voltage curves. The authors then proposed an exemplary model of a bus terminus with the designed infrastructure for charging buses, based on the assumptions of the public transport operator in Warsaw. The comparison of these two solutions was made and based on it, a methodology of calculating daily demand for any terminus was prepared. In addition, no problems with the power quality were found during the research. This allows us to state that the introduction of electric buses into the fleet of passenger carriers will have a minor impact... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building refurbishment, building rehabilitation, building renovation, Energy Efficiency, envelope airtightness, envelope thermography, envelope transmittance, Minimum-Energy Building (MEB), subtropical climate building
Today, most countries in the world have mandatory regulations, more or less strict, regarding energy efficiency in buildings. However, a large percentage of the buildings already built were constructed under lax or non-existing regulations in this regard. Therefore, many countries are facing the energy refurbishment of their existing buildings to reduce their carbon footprint. Depending on ambient weather conditions where a building settles, its operation with respect to the achievement of maximum energy efficiency should usually be different. This happens in subtropical climates when, during the year and depending on the season, the building needs to conserve heat, evacuate it or even make an exchange with the outside to take advantage of favorable environmental conditions. This paper presents a complete methodology for conducting building energy efficiency refurbishments in subtropical climates in order to convert them into minimum energy buildings. The proposed methodology is illust... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive control, pitch control, rotor angular speed, torque control, wind turbine
In this paper, robust adaptive control is designed for pitch and torque control of the wind turbines operating under turbulent wind conditions. The dynamics of the wind turbine are formulated by considering the five degrees of freedom system (rotor angle, gearbox angle, generator angle, flap-wise deflection of the rotor blade, and axial displacement of the nacelle). The controller is designed to maintain the rotor speed, maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the wind turbine, and reduce the loads due to high wind speeds. Gaussian probability distribution function is used for approximating the wind speed, which is given as the disturbance input to the plant. The adaptive control algorithm is implemented to 2 MW and 5 MW wind turbines to test the robustness of the controller for varying parameters. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink for three cases, namely pitch control, torque control, and the combined case. A case study is done to validate the proposed adaptive contro... The renewable energy transition has introduced new electricity tariff structures. With the increased penetration of photovoltaic and wind power systems, users are being charged more for their peak demand. Consequently, peak shaving has gained attention in recent years. In this paper, we investigated the potential of peak shaving through battery storage. The analyzed system comprises a battery, a load and the grid but no renewable energy sources. The study is based on 40 load profiles of low-voltage users, located in Belgium, for the period 1 January 2014, 00:00−31 December 2016, 23:45, at 15 min resolution, with peak demand pricing. For each user, we studied the peak load reduction achievable by batteries of varying energy capacities (kWh), ranging from 0.1 to 10 times the mean power (kW). The results show that for 75% of the users, the peak reduction stays below 44% when the battery capacity is 10 times the mean power. Furthermore, for 75% of the users the battery remains idle for at... [more]

Keywords: copula, ESG, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, value-at-risk
Studies on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index have become increasingly important since the ESG index offers attractive characteristics, such as environmental friendliness. Scholars and institutional investors are evaluating if investment in the ESG index can positively change current portfolios. It is crucial that institutional investors seek related assets to diversify their investments when such investors create funds in the renewable energy sector, which is highly related to environmental issues. The ESG index has proven to be a good investment choice, but we are not aware of its performance when combined with renewable energy securities. To uncover this nature, we investigate the dependence structure of the ESG index and four renewable energy indices with constant and time-varying copula models and evaluate the potential performance of using different ratios of the ESG index in the portfolio. Reliability Evaluation for Aviation Electric Power System in Consideration of Uncertainty
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aviation electric power system (AEPS), failure rate, minimal path set, reliability, uncertainty
With the rapid development of more electric aircraft (MEA) in recent years, the aviation electric power system (AEPS) has played an increasingly important role in safe flight. However, as a highly reliable system, because of its complicated flight conditions and architecture, it often proves significant uncertainty in its failure occurrence and consequence. Thus, more and more stakeholders, e.g., passengers, aviation administration departments, are dissatisfied with the traditional system reliability analysis, in which failure uncertainty is not considered and system reliability probability is a constant value at a given time. To overcome this disadvantage, we propose a new methodology in the AEPS reliability evaluation. First, we perform a random sampling from the probability distributions of components’ failure rates and compute the system reliability at each sample point; after that, we use variance, confidence interval, and probability density function to quantify the uncertainty o... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep belief network, dimensional reduction, prediction, seismic attribute, TDC, thickness
Thickness of tectonically deformed coal (TDC) has positive correlations with the susceptible gas outbursts in coal mines. To predict the TDC thickness of the coalbed, we proposed a prediction method using seismic attributes based on the deep belief network (DBN) and dimensionality reduction. Firstly, we built a DBN prediction model using the extracted attributes from a synthetic seismic section. Next, we transformed the possibly correlated seismic attributes into principal components through principal components analysis. Then, we compared the true TDC thickness with the predicted TDC thicknesses to evaluate the prediction accuracy of different models, i.e., a DBN model, a support vector machine model, and an extreme learning machine model. Finally, we used the DBN model to predict the TDC thickness of coalbed No. 8 in an operational coal mine based on synthetic experiments. Our studies showed that the predicted distribution of TDC thickness followed the regional characteristics of TDC... [more]

Techno Economic Analysis of Vehicle to Grid (V2G) Integration as Distributed Energy Resources in Indonesia Power System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: driving pattern, electric vehicles, frequency regulation, load leveling, vehicle-to-grid
High penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to high stress on a power grid, especially when the supply cannot cover and actively respond to the unpredictable demand caused by charging EVs. In the Java-Madura-Bali (JAMALI) area, Indonesia, the capability of the grid to balance its supply and demand is very limited, and massive EV charging additionally worsens the condition because of unbalanced load profiles. Ancillary services of EVs have led to the idea of utilizing EV batteries for grid support, owing to their high-speed response to the fluctuating power system. In this study, a techno-economic analysis of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system in the JAMALI grid is conducted in terms of the changes in the feed-in tariff schemes, including regular, natural, and demand response tariffs. Improved Photovoltaic Self-Consumption in Residential Buildings with Distributed and Centralized Smart Charging of Electric Vehicles
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity consumption, photovoltaics, residential buildings, self-consumption, smart charging
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) charging in residential buildings has increased in recent years. At high latitudes, both pose new challenges to the residential power systems due to the negative correlation between household load and PV power production and the increase in household peak load by EV charging. EV smart charging schemes can be an option to overcome these challenges. This paper presents a distributed and a centralized EV smart charging scheme for residential buildings based on installed photovoltaic (PV) power output and household electricity consumption. The proposed smart charging schemes are designed to determine the optimal EV charging schedules with the objective to minimize the net load variability or to flatten the net load profile. Minimizing the net load variability implies both increasing the PV self-consumption and reducing the peak loads. The charging scheduling problems are formulated and solved with quadratic programming approach... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, intrinsic permeability, methane adsorption, permeability evolution, relative permeability, water saturation
The increasing demand on coal production has led to the gradually increase of mining depth and more high methane mines, which bring difficulties in terms of coalbed methane (CBM) extraction. Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to improve the production of CBM, control mine gas, and prevent gas outbursts. It improves coal bed permeability and accelerate desorption and migration of CBM. Even though the impacts of hydraulic fracturing treatment on the coal reservoirs are rare, negative effects could not be totally ignored. To defend this defect, the presented work aims to study the influence of water filtration on coal body deformation and permeability evolution. For this purpose, a simulation based finite element method was developed to build a solid-fluid coupled two-phase flow model using commercial software (COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4). Keywords: Bayesian updating, Machine Learning, maintenance, reliability, wind turbine
Operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, and associated uncertainty, for wind turbines (WTs) is a significant burden for wind farm operators. Many wind turbine failures are unpredictable while causing loss of energy production, and may also cause loss of asset. This study utilized 753 O&M event data from 21 wind turbines operating in Germany, to improve the prediction of failure frequency and associated costs. We applied Bayesian updating to predict wind turbine failure frequency and time-to-repair (TTR), in conjunction to machine learning techniques for assessing costs associated with failures. We found that time-to-failure (TTF), time-to-repair and the cost of failures depend on operational and environmental conditions. High elevation (>100 m) of the wind turbine installation was found to increase both the probability of failures and probability of delayed repairs. Novel Three-Port Bidirectional DC/DC Converter with Three-Winding Coupled Inductor for Photovoltaic System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: three-port bidirectional converter, three-winding coupled inductor
This study proposes a novel three-port bidirectional converter with a three-winding coupled inductor and applies it to a photovoltaic (PV) system to step up the PV system output to a dc bus or dc load while charging the battery. When the PV output is insufficient, battery voltage is stepped up to the dc bus voltage, and when the dc bus has excess energy, it is stepped down to charge the battery. Thus, a three-port bidirectional high step-up/step-down converter is achieved. A three-winding common core coupled inductor is designed and implemented in the converter, and a full-wave doubler circuit is used on the high-voltage side to achieve a high step-up effect. Power switches and diodes in the circuit are shared to achieve bidirectional operation. The output capacitors recover secondary-side leakage inductance energy in the step-up mode, and the third winding can be used to recover primary-side leakage inductance energy to reduce the voltage spike on switching in order to improve the con...
