Floating Performance of a Composite Bucket Foundation with an Offshore Wind Tower during Transportation
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air cushion, composite bucket foundation (CBF), floating, offshore wind, one-step integrated transportation
The composite bucket foundation (CBF) for offshore wind turbines is the basis for a one-step integrated transportation and installation technique, which can be adapted to the construction and development needs of offshore wind farms due to its special structural form. To transport and install bucket foundations together with the upper portion of offshore wind turbines, a non-self-propelled integrated transportation and installation vessel was designed. In this paper, as the first stage of applying the proposed one-step integrated construction technique, the floating behavior during the transportation of CBF with a wind turbine tower for the Xiangshui wind farm in the Jiangsu province was monitored. The influences of speed, wave height, and wind on the floating behavior of the structure were studied. The results show that the roll and pitch angles remain close to level during the process of lifting and towing the wind turbine structure. In addition, the safety of the aircushion structur... [more]

Hydrate—A Mysterious Phase or Just Misunderstood?
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrate, non-equilibrium, production
Hydrates that form during transport of hydrocarbons containing free water, or water dissolved in hydrocarbons, are generally not in thermodynamic equilibrium and depend on the concentration of all components in all phases. Temperature and pressure are normally the only variables used in hydrate analysis, even though hydrates will dissolve by contact with pure water and water which is under saturated with hydrate formers. Mineral surfaces (for example rust) play dual roles as hydrate inhibitors and hydrate nucleation sites. What appears to be mysterious, and often random, is actually the effects of hydrate non-equilibrium and competing hydrate formation and dissociation phase transitions. There is a need to move forward towards a more complete non-equilibrium way to approach hydrates in industrial settings. Similar challenges are related to natural gas hydrates in sediments. Hydrates dissociates worldwide due to seawater that leaks into hydrate filled sediments. Many of the global resou... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CHP system, economic, electricity cost, thermodynamic performance, turbine-driving
The combined heating and power (CHP) system with turbine-driving fans and pumps is more efficient and economical in meeting heat demand in cold areas, however, there are no detailed studies that investigate its thermodynamic performance, improvement possibilities and economy. In this paper, the energy, exergy and economic analysis of a CHP system with turbine-driving fans and pumps operated in Northeast China were conducted to provide insights into improvement options. It is revealed that the boiler is the main source of exergy destruction, followed by the steam-water heat exchangers (SWHE), temperature and pressure reducer (TPR), turbines, and deaerator. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the system are 89.72% and 10.07%, while the boiler’s are 84.89% and 30.04%. The thermodynamic performance of the boiler and turbines are compared with other studies, and the inefficiencies of major components are analyzed and some advice for further improvement is given. A Modified High Voltage Gain Quasi-Impedance Source Coupled Inductor Multilevel Inverter for Photovoltaic Application
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coupled inductors, impedance source, multilevel inverter, photovoltaic connected inverter, space vector pulse PWM
The quasi-impedance source inverters/quasi-Z source inverters (Q-ZSIs) have shown improvement to overwhelmed shortcomings of regular voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and current-source inverters (CSIs) in terms of efficiency and buck-boost type operations. The Q-ZSIs encapsulated several significant merits against conventional ZSIs, i.e., realized buck/boost, inversion and power conditioning in a single power stage with improved reliability. The conventional inverters have two major problems; voltage harmonics and boosting capability, which make it impossible to prefer for renewable generation and general-purpose applications such as drive acceleration. This work has proposed a Q-ZSI with five-level six switches coupled inverter. The proposed Q-ZSI has the merits of operation, reduced passive components, higher voltage boosting capability and high efficiency. The modified space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) developed to achieve the desired control on the impedance network and inve... [more]

Experimental Investigation on the High-frequency Pressure Oscillation Characteristics of a Combustion Process in a DI Diesel Engine
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive cyclic average TVF-EMD, combustion, DI diesel engine, high-frequency, in-cylinder pressure oscillation
It is difficult to decompose the in-cylinder pressure of combustion of the direct injection (DI) diesel engine, a transient process associated with complicated oscillation components, because of its steep property. An adaptive cyclic average method based on time varying filter based empirical mode decomposition (TVF-EMD) is proposed to decompose the in-cylinder pressure signal, and the cyclic number is determined adaptively with protruding ratio of high-frequency oscillation. The proposed method is used to compare with the ensemble empirical mode decomposition and original TVF-EMD. The results indicate that the proposed method can overcome the drawbacks of these methods and extract high-frequency oscillations accurately and effectively. Three evaluation indexes, center frequency, normalized energy, and average center frequency are defined to analyze the frequency and energy characteristics of high-frequency oscillation quantitatively. The Dynamic Impacts of Oil Price on China’s Natural Gas Consumption under the Change of Global Oil Market Patterns: An Analysis from the Perspective of Total Consumption and Structure
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Cointegration test with regime shifts, energy structure, natural gas consumption, State space model
In recent years, China’s energy structure has been adjusted unceasingly, where the proportion of natural gas has been increasing year by year, and its external dependence has also been increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the correlation between China’s natural gas market and the international energy market. This paper studies the dynamic relationship between China’s total natural gas consumption, consumption structure, and the international price of oil from the perspectives of mutation and time-variance, using the cointegration test with regime shifts and a state space model. The results show that during the global financial crisis in 2008, the cointegration relationship between China’s total natural gas consumption and the international oil price has undergone structural changes. January 2012 and March 2015 are potential structural mutation points. After the structural mutation, the impact of the international price of oil on China’s total natural gas consumption has we... Optimal Price Based Demand Response of HVAC Systems in Commercial Buildings Considering Peak Load Reduction
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bi-level decision model, demand response (DR), electric utility companies (EUCs), heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, load leveling, peak load reduction, retail price
Electric utility companies (EUCs) play an intermediary role of retailers between wholesale market and end-users, maximizing their profits. Retail pricing can be well deployed with the support of EUCs to promote demand response (DR) programs for heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings. This paper proposes a pricing strategy to help EUCs and building operators achieve an optimal DR of price-elastic HVAC systems, considering peak load reduction. The proposed strategy is implemented by adopting a bi-level decision model. The nonlinear thermal response of an experimental building room is modeled using piecewise linear equations, which helps convert the bi-level model to the single-level model. The pricing strategy is implemented considering a time-of-use (TOU) pricing scheme, leading to low price volatility. Case studies are conducted for two types of load curves and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy helps EUC promote the price-base... [more]

Full-Bridge Active-Clamp Forward-Flyback Converter with an Integrated Transformer for High-Performance and Low Cost Low-Voltage DC Converter of Vehicle Applications
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active-clamp converter, DC-DC converter, eco-friendly vehicle, forward-flyback converter, high efficiency, high power density, integrated transformer, low-voltage DC converter, soft-switching
This paper presents a full-bridge active-clamp forward-flyback (FBACFF) converter with an integrated transformer sharing a single primary winding. Compared to the conventional active-clamp-forward (ACF) converter, the proposed converter has low voltage stress on the primary switches due to its full-bridge active-clamp structure, which can leverage high performance Silicon- metal−oxide−semiconductor field-effect transistor (Si-MOSFET) of low voltage rating and low channel resistance. Integrating forward and flyback operations allows the proposed converter to have much lower primary root mean square (RMS) current than the conventional phase-shifted-full-bridge (PSFB) converter, while covering wide input/output voltage range with duty ratio over 0.5. The proposed integrated transformer reduces the transformer conduction loss and simplify the secondary structure of the proposed converter. As a result, the proposed converter has several advantages: (1) high heavy load efficiency, (2) wide i... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Polish climate, temperate climate, transparent insulation
A numerical model of a solar wall (SW) with transparent insulation (TI) is proposed in this article. The model is based on the finite-difference method and thermal conductivity equation, with a heat source term for the absorber. Using this model, the energy efficiency of a solar wall with transparent insulation (SW-TI) with honeycomb insulation made of modified cellulose acetate was analyzed in the case of different climatic conditions prevailing in Poland, different orientations of the envelope, and different insulation thicknesses. Simulations were carried out throughout the whole heating period. Monthly energy balances and temperature distributions for the analyzed envelopes at individual moments of the heating period are the basic results of the simulations. It was found that the use of 108 and 88 mm thick insulation was the most recommended in the considered temperate climate. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pipe, Li-ion battery, thermal management, thermoelectric cooler
The temperature of electric vehicle batteries needs to be controlled through a thermal management system to ensure working performance, service life, and safety. In this paper, TAFEL-LAE895 100Ah ternary Li-ion batteries were used, and discharging experiments at different rates were conducted to study the surface temperature increasing characteristics of the battery. To dissipate heat, heat pipes with high thermal conductivity were used to accelerate dissipating heat on the surface of the battery. We found that the heat pipe was sufficient to keep the battery temperature within the desired range with a midlevel discharge rate. For further improvement, an additional thermoelectric cooler was needed for a high discharge rate. Simulations were completed with a battery management system based on a heat pipe and with a combined heat pipe and thermoelectric cooler, and the results were in line with the experimental results. Solvent-Dictated Sodium Sulfur Redox Reactions: Investigation of Carbonate and Ether Electrolytes
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbonate, electrolyte, ether, redox kinetics, sodium-sulfur
Sulfur-based cathode chemistries are essential for the development of high energy density alkali-ion batteries. Here, we elucidate the redox kinetics of sulfur confined on carbon nanotubes, comparing its performance in ether-based and carbonate-based electrolytes at room temperature. The solvent is found to play a key role for the electrochemical reactivity of the sulfur cathode in sodium−sulfur (Na−S) batteries. Ether-based electrolytes contribute to a more complete reduction of sulfur and enable a higher electrochemical reversibility. On the other hand, an irreversible solution-phase reaction is observed in carbonate solvents. This study clearly reveals the solvent-dependent Na−S reaction pathways in room temperature Na−S batteries and provides an insight into realizing their high energy potential, via electrolyte formulation design.

Hot Blade Shape Reconstruction Considering Variable Stiffness and Unbalanced Load in a Steam Turbine
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade, reconstruction, steam turbine, unbalanced load, variable stiffness
The blades in the low-pressure stage of a steam turbine must be reverse engineered according to the ideal blade shape due to the deformation of the blade during operation. A numerical analysis model of the flow field of the blades is proposed, and the model is solved by alternating between the fluid domain and the solid domain. Considering the imbalance of the load acting on the blade surface and the change in the blade stiffness matrix when the steam turbine is running, the Newton−Raphson method is used to calculate the pressure of the steam fluid on the blade surface and the change in the flow field caused by the blade deformation in each time step. The data are exchanged between the fluid domain and the solid domain after a single-step solution is completed. The simultaneous changes in the fluid domain and the solid domain are discretized in very short time steps, and the process of the blade deformation from stationary to running is simulated by accumulating the time steps. Finally... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage applications, equalization algorithm, layered bidirectional equalization, retired batteries
The power from lithium-ion batteries can be retired from electric vehicles (EVs) and can be used for energy storage applications when the residual capacity is up to 70% of their initial capacity. The retired batteries have characteristics of serious inconsistency. In order to solve this problem, a layered bidirectional active equalization topology is proposed in this paper. Specifically, a bridge-type equalization topology based on an inductor is adopted in the bottom layer, and the distributed equalization topological structure based on the bidirectional BUCK-BOOST circuit is adopted in the top layer. State of charge (SOC) is used as the equalization target variable, and the bottom layer equalization algorithm based on a “partition” idea and route optimization is proposed. The static equalization experiments and charge equalization experiments are performed by the 12 retired batteries selected from an electric sanitation vehicle. Relation Between Mean Fluid Temperature and Outlet Temperature for Single U-Tube Boreholes
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, effective borehole thermal resistance, ground heat exchangers, ground-coupled heat pumps, outlet temperature, single U-tube
Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems usually utilize buried vertical heat exchangers, named borehole heat exchangers (BHEs). The accurate design or simulation of a GCHP system requires the calculation of the time-dependent outlet temperature from the BHEs, Tout. However, the most widely employed BHE simulation models yield the time evolution either of the mean temperature of the BHE-ground surface, Tsm, or of that of the fluid, Tfm. In transient regime, it is not easy to relate Tout to either Tsm or Tfm. In this paper we determine, through 3D finite element simulations, simple expressions of a dimensionless coefficient φ allowing the calculation of Tout by means of a simulation model that yields Tfm. These expressions hold for single U-tube BHEs, both in quasi-steady and in unsteady working conditions. We validate our 3D simulation code by comparison with an analytical BHE model. Then, we present applications of our expressions of φ to calculate the time-dependent values of Tout thr... [more]

Keywords: coal and gangue, feature extraction, segmentation, U-Net
Sorting gangue from raw coal is an essential concern in coal mining engineering. Prior to separation, the location and shape of the gangue should be extracted from the raw coal image. Several approaches regarding automatic detection of gangue have been proposed to date; however, none of them is satisfying. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct gangue segmentation using a U-shape fully convolutional neural network (U-Net). The proposed network is trained to segment gangue from raw coal images collected under complex environmental conditions. The probability map outputted by the network was used to obtain the location and shape information of gangue. The proposed solution was trained on a dataset consisting of 54 shortwave infrared (SWIR) raw coal images collected from Datong Coalfield. The performance of the network was tested with six never seen images, achieving an average area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) value of 0.96. Effects of Temperature on the Flow and Heat Transfer in Gel Fuels: A Numerical Study
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constitutive model, gel, non-Newtonian fluid, pressure drop, temperature, temperature-dependent viscosity
In general, rheological properties of gelled fuels change dramatically when temperature changes. In this work, we investigate flow and heat transfer of water-gel in a straight pipe and a tapered injector for non-isothermal conditions, which mimic the situations when gelled fuels are used in propulsion systems. The gel-fluid is modeled as a non-Newtonian fluid, where the viscosity depends on the shear rate and the temperature; a correlation fitted with experimental data is used. For the fully developed flow in a straight pipe with heating, the mean apparent viscosity at the cross section when the temperature is high is only 44% of the case with low temperature; this indicates that it is feasible to control the viscosity of gel fuel by proper thermal design of pipes. For the flow in the typical tapered injector, larger temperature gradients along the radial direction results in a more obvious plug flow; that is, when the fuel is heated the viscosity near the wall is significantly reduced... Determination of the Required Power Response of Inverters to Provide Fast Frequency Support in Power Systems with Low Synchronous Inertia
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: critical time, fast power reserve, frequency nadir, low inertia grids
The decommissioning of conventional power plants and the installation of inverter-based renewable energy technologies decrease the overall power system inertia, increasing the rate of change of frequency of a system (RoCoF). These expected high values of RoCoF shorten the time response needed before load shedding or generation curtailment takes place. In a future scenario where renewables are predominant in power systems, the ability of synchronous machines to meet such conditions is uncertain in terms of capacity and time response. The implementation of fast power reserve and synthetic inertia from inverter-based sources was assessed through the simulation of two scenarios with different grid sizes and primary reserve responses. As main results it was obtained that the full activation time for a fast power reserve with penetration above 80% of inverter-based generation would need to be 100 ms or less for imbalances up to 40%, regardless of the synchronous response and grid size, meani... Identifying the suitable reaction conditions is key to achieve high performance and economic efficiency in any catalytic process. In this study, the catalytic performance of a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst, a benchmark system—was investigated in steam reforming of toluene as a biomass gasification tar model compound to explore the effect of reforming temperature, steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and residence time on toluene conversion and gas products. Particle deposition tests were conducted in a turbine deposition facility with an internally staged single-tube combustor to investigate the individual effect of the gas temperature and angle of attack. Sand particles were seeded to the combustor and deposited on a turbine blade with film-cooling holes at temperatures representative of modern engines. Fuel-air ratios were varied from 0.022 to 0.037 to achieve a gas temperature between 1272 and 1668 K. Results show that capture efficiency increased with increasing gas temperature. A dramatic increase in capture efficiency was noted when gas temperature exceeded the threshold. The deposition formed mostly downstream of the film-cooling holes on the pressure surface, while it concentrated on the suction surface at the trailing edge. Deposition tests at angles of attack between 10° and 40° presented changes in both deposition mass and distribution.
