Analysis of Interturn Faults on Transformer Based on Electromagnetic-Mechanical Coupling
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: interturn fault, multi-physical field coupling, transformer, transient process
A running transformer frequently experiences interturn faults; they are typically difficult to detect in their early stages but eventually progress to interturn short circuits, which cause damage to the transformer. Therefore, finding out the fault mechanism of the full interturn fault process can provide a theoretical basis for transformer fault detection. In this paper, an electromagnetic-solid mechanics coupled finite element model consistent with an actual oil-immersed three-phase transformer is established. The transient process of winding from interturn discharge to interturn short circuit is simulated to study the electromagnetic characteristics as well as the mechanical characteristics during transformer failure. The model parameters of the transformer are simulated to obtain the fault current, electromagnetic parameters and other performance parameters to study the characteristics of the magnetic field and coil force when interturn faults occur. Finally, the vibration of the t... [more]

Review on Gassing Tendency of Different Insulating Fluids towards Transformer Applications
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical stress, ester fluid, Ethylene, gassing, Hydrogen, mineral oil, regeneration, stray gassing, thermal stress
This paper reports the critical reviews on the gassing tendency of different insulating fluids along with the precautionary measures to be considered during their fault diagnosis in transformer insulation. The experimental techniques and procedures for identifying the gassing due to electrical and thermal stress along with the stray gassing phenomenon has been elucidated. The different interpretation schemes used for determining the faults in transformers results in unexpected errors when the historical data relating to mineral oil is used for the other alternative fluids. Mineral oil and natural ester show a positive gassing tendency compared to synthetic ester which exhibit a negative gassing tendency. The stray gases are mostly due to breakage of C-C bonds under normal operating temperature of transformer. Among the different hydrocarbons, hydrogen and ethylene are more predominantly formed under lower temperatures. The silicone oil and ester fluids are more stable even under locali... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 2-DOF-PID, Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), integral-based weighted goal fitness function I-BWGFF, optimal control
The increase in power demand, nonlinearity, complexity, varying structure, and other important causes has necessitated the implementation of artificial intelligent control methodologies for safe and acceptable operation of the electric power systems. Therefore, in this article, an improved two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF-PID) control scheme is proposed for power/frequency control of a two-area interconnected electric power system. The parameters of the 2-DOF-PID control scheme are optimized using the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) via a new integral-based weighted goal fitness function (IB-WGFF) (i.e., DF-2DOF-PID-IB-WGFF). The superiority of the suggested scheme is proved by comparing the results obtained using the proposed IB-WGFF with those obtained using the conventional controllers, and the 2DOF-PID controllers optimized using the DA and Genetic Algorithm (GA) via the frequently published performance criterion. To verify the stability, efficacy, and robustness of the proposed control schem... [more]

Control of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Voltage-Sourced Converter Using Long Short-Term Memory Networks
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct and quadrature current control, long short-term memory (LSTM), transient response, voltage-sourced converter (VSC)
With the rise of inverter-based resources (IBRs) within the power system, the control of grid-connected converters (GCCs) has become pertinent due to the fact they interface IBRs to the grid. The conventional method of control for a GCC such as the voltage-sourced converter (VSC) is through a decoupled control loop in the synchronous reference frame. However, this model-based control method is sensitive to parameter changes causing deterioration in controller performance. Data-driven approaches such as machine learning can be utilized to design controllers that are capable of operating GCCs in various system conditions. This work explores a deep learning-based control method for a three-phase grid-connected VSC, specifically utilizing a long short-term memory (LSTM) network for robust control. Simulations of a conventional controlled VSC are conducted using Simulink to collect data for training the LSTM-based controller. The LSTM model is built and trained using the Keras and TensorFlo... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: first law analysis, force circulated, solar fraction, solar water heating systems, thermal efficiency, thermosyphon
The main categories of solar water heating systems (SWHSs) are the thermosyphon and the forced circulation (FC). This paper presents an experiment carried out with the aim to compare the energy performance of the FC with a thermosyphon SHWS. Identical SWHSs were installed side by side at the University of West Attica in Athens, Greece. Domestic hot water load was applied to both systems via a microcontroller-based dispensing unit which mimics the demand profile. The trial period comprised the last two months of spring (April and May). For the first law assessment, two energy indicators were utilized: the solar fraction (SF) and the thermal efficiency of the system (ηth). On days with distinctive weather conditions, both systems obtained approximately equal SF and ηth values, without a specific preference between the ambient conditions and the type of SWHS. Regarding a four-day nonstop operation, the FC overperformed the thermosyphon system at both energy indicators. Namely, for the FC... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: agro-industrial waste, building blocks, lime, soil, sugarcane bagasse
Each year, hundreds of millions of tons of processed sugarcane generate, by weight, 25 to 30% of bagasse as waste, whose destination is combustion for energy cogeneration. This research proposes an alternative and more sustainable use for this waste. The use of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as the single aggregate in composites for building blocks was studied. The raw bagasse was used without any treatment. As the binder, aerial lime and/or soil were used. Both provided enough mechanical strength for non-load-bearing walls. The composite of SCB with soil achieved the best performance in terms of mechanical resistance: 2.6 MPa in compressive strength and 2.1 MPa in bending strength, while the composite of SCB with lime achieved 1.76 MPa and 1.7 MPa, respectively. The higher number of fibers in the SCB/lime mixture provides better thermal insulation than clay brick or conventional concrete, such as “hempcrete”. Design and Implementation of a Driving Strategy for Star-Connected Active Magnetic Bearings with Application to Sensorless Driving
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active magnetic bearing, AMB, anisotropy-based position estimation, DFC, direct flux control, sensorless, star connection, star point
For decades, sensorless position estimation methods gained lots of interest from the research community, especially in the field of electric drives and active magnetic bearings (AMBs). In particular, the direct flux control (DFC) technique promises unique advantages over other sensorless techniques, such as a higher bandwidth, but on the other hand, it requires the coils to be connected in a star topology. Until now, star-point connections are rarely found on active magnetic bearings. In consequence, there is no known publication about the application of the DFC to an AMB to this date. In order to apply the DFC to an AMB, a star-point driving approach for AMBs must be developed beforehand. A star-connected driving approach, capable of driving a four-phase AMB, is proposed and validated against traditional H-bridges in a simulation. Further, the strategy is tested in a physical application and generalised for 4∗n phases. In terms of current dynamics, the simulation results can be compar... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: noise and vibration, oscillation damping, pressure control system, stability
Gas pressure regulators are widely used in gas transportation and distribution systems. They are designed for deep pressure reduction and maintainance with high accuracy over a wide flow range. Operation at a high pressure drop is accompanied by a high level of noise, for reduction of which, silencers are used. However, installation of a noise suppressor into the regulator design has a significant impact on its static and dynamic characteristics. This can lead to a decrease of accuracy, loss of stability and occurrence of self-oscillations of the valve. These, in turn, lead to increasing noise and vibration, wear of contact surfaces and premature failure of the regulator. The paper presents results of a study of dynamic characteristics of a modernized serial regulator with a built-in noise suppressor. Average Current Mode Control of a DC−DC Boost Converter to Reduce the Decoupling Capacitance at the PV Array Output
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: boost converter, current control, photovoltaic array, power decoupling capacitor, second-order oscillations, utilization ratio
Due to the full-wave AC−DC power conversion, second-order frequency oscillations of current and voltage are created in single-phase PV-grid-connected inverters. These oscillations propagate toward the input and adversely affect the PV power utilization ratio. Large power decoupling capacitors are the preliminary solution for coping with voltage ripples across PVs, and they decrease the lifetime of the overall system. This paper proposes the average current mode control (ACMC) of the input inductor in a DC−DC boost converter in a double-stage PV power conversion system. Through extensive explanations of the modeling and control of a DC−DC boost converter, it is shown that the ACMC reduces the propagation of the second-order frequency components (SOFCs) toward the input PV array. Two controllers—a proportional−integral controller and an integral single-lead controller—are considered to adjust the average value of the PV output current in a single-loop control structure. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chattering, reaching law, sliding mode control, sliding surface, three phase voltage source inverter
Voltage source inverters (VSIs) are an integral part of electrical vehicles (EVs) to enhance the reliability of the supply power to critical loads in vehicle to load (V2L) applications. The inherent properties of sliding mode control (SMC) makes it one of the best available options to achieve the desired voltage quality under variable load conditions. The intrinsic characteristic of robustness associated with SMC is generally achieved at the cost of unwanted chattering along the sliding surface. To manage this compromise better, optimal selection of sliding surface coefficient is applied with the proposed composite exponential reaching law (C-ERL). The novelty of the proposed C-ERL is associated with the intelligent mix of the exponential, power, and difference functions blended with the rotating sliding surface selection (RSS) technique for three phase two level VSI. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: expansion state observer, oxygen excess ratio, PEMFC, SMC and PID cascade control
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are vulnerable to oxygen starvation when working under variable load. To address these issues, a cascade control strategy of sliding mode control (SMC) and Proportion Integration Differentiation (PID) control is proposed in this study. The goal of the control strategy is to enhance the PEMFC’s net power by adjusting the oxygen excess ratio (OER) to the reference value in the occurrence of a load change. In order to estimate the cathode pressure and reconstruct the OER, an expansion state observer (ESO) is developed. The study found that there is a maximum error of about 2200Pa between the estimated cathode pressure and the actual pressure. Then the tracking of the actual OER to the reference OER is realized by the SMC and PID cascade control.
