An Improved Hydraulic Energy Storage Wave Power-Generation System Based on QPR Control
Zhigang Liu, Wei Huang, Shi Liu, Xiaomei Wu, Chun Sing Lai, Yi Yang
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic PTO, QPR control, W2W models, wave power-generation system
According to the inherent characteristics of the hydraulic power take-off (PTO) system, the output power of a generator tends to be intermittent when the wave is random. Therefore, this paper aims to improve the effective utilization of wave energy and reduce power intermittency by constructing a topology with two branches to transmit electrical energy. Firstly, the wave-to-wire (W2W) model of the system is constructed. Secondly, the W2W model is simulated by using synovial and quasi-proportional resonance (QPR) control with regular and irregular incident waves, and the results of PI control are compared. Then, the control strategy in simulation is verified by experiments. The simulation and experimental results show that the control strategy has better performance, and the stability of the system output power is greatly improved.
High-Order Compensation Topology Integration for High-Tolerant Wireless Power Transfer
Zhaoyang Yuan, Qingxin Yang, Xian Zhang, Xianjie Ma, Zhixin Chen, Ming Xue, Pengcheng Zhang
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compensation topology integration, constant output, control strategy, misalignment tolerance, wireless power transfer
Wireless power transfer (WPT) has been a promising way to transfer power wirelessly over certain distances through the mutual inductance (MI) of the magnetically coupled transmitter and receiver coils, providing significant benefits of convenience, safety, and feasibility to special occasions. The stable output and efficiency cannot be maintained due to the load variation and the inevitable misalignment between the magnetic couplers. High-order compensation topologies that are highly flexible in design due to more compensation elements are essential for the WPT to suppress the load variation and misalignment effects. However, due to core loss and thermal management, high-power-level and high-frequency inductor design have always been challenging for WPT systems. Space occupation and cost are other aspects to be considered for inductor design. Thus integrating these additional bulky inductors into the main coils has been a critical trial. As a result, the compensation topologies’ origin... [more]
Maceral Control on the Hydrocarbon Generation Potential of Lacustrine Shales: A Case Study of the Chang 7 Member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, North China
Bei Liu, Juan Teng, Maria Mastalerz
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Chang 7 Member, hydrocarbon generation potential, lacustrine shales, maceral, organic pores, Yanchang Formation
Organic matter (OM) type critically controls the hydrocarbon generation potential and organic pore development in black shales. However, maceral variation in lacustrine shales and its control on hydrocarbon generation potential and organic pore development are not yet well understood. In this study, 15 Chang 7 Member shale samples of the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, were investigated with organic petrography, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and a scanning electron microscope to study the maceral composition, hydrocarbon generation potential, and organic pores in this black shale succession. The results show that the studied shales are in the oil window (Ro~0.70%). OM belongs to Type I and Type III kerogen, as demonstrated by Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Macerals in the Chang 7 Member shales are composed of amorphous OM, alginite, sporinite, liptodetrinite, vitrinite, inertinite, and solid bitumen. Amorphous OM and alginite are major hydrocarbon-generating macerals, and their content determines the hy... [more]

He Wang, Tao Wu, Youguang Guo, Gang Lei, Xinmei Wang
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deadbeat predictive current control (DBPC), linear permanent magnet synchronous motor (LPMSM), sensorless control, sliding mode
In the vector control system of a tubular oscillating permanent magnet synchronous linear motor, it is difficult to obtain accurate feedback information from the conventional mechanical sensors under bad and complex working conditions. This paper presents a new predictive current control designed to estimate the speed of the tubular oscillation permanent magnet synchronous linear motor. It implements two control techniques: The first technique is using the sliding-mode observer’s speed observer for speed estimation. The second is to design a deadbeat predictive current control to replace the PI regulator in the conventional current loop; it solves the difficulties of global optimization and PI parameter setting. The simulation and experimental results show that this method gives a good dynamic performance.

Keywords: artificial neural networks, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, SCADA, wind energy, wind turbines
Wind turbines are expected to provide on the order of 50% of the electricity worldwide in the near future, and it is therefore fundamental to reduce the costs associated with this form of energy conversion, which regard maintenance as the first item of expenditure. SCADA-based condition monitoring for anomaly detection is commonly presented as a convenient solution for fault diagnosis on turbine components. However, its suitability is generally proven by empirical analyses which are limited in time and based on a circumscribed number of turbines. To cope with this lack of validation, this paper performs a controlled experiment to evaluate the suitability of SCADA-based condition monitoring for fault diagnosis in a fleet of eight turbines monitored for over 11 years. For the controlled experiment, a weakly supervised method was used to model the normal behavior of the turbine component. Such a model is instantiated as a convolutional neural network. The method, instantiated as a thresho... [more]

Keywords: data fusion, dynamic state estimation, EMS, hybrid state estimation, PMU, RTU, SCADA, static state estimation, WAMS
State estimation (SE) is an essential tool of energy management systems (EMS), providing power system operators with an overall grasp of the actual power system operating conditions and aiding them in sustaining reliable and secure operation of the grid. In modern transmission sectors, two main measurement systems are deployed, namely the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and the wide area monitoring systems (WAMS). The multiple advantages of augmenting conventional SCADA-based SE algorithms with synchrophasor measurements from WAMS are already well-established; thus, an abundance of different methodologies has been reported in the field of hybrid SE (HSE). Under this premise, this paper provides a thorough literature review of novel HSE methods in transmission systems and proposes a classification based on the scope and mathematical modeling of each method. Following a brief introduction to the concept of SE based on WAMS and SCADA measurements, an insight into the main... [more]

Keywords: breeding blanket, chronic and acute leakage, coolant purification system, CPS, detritiation system, distillation column, fuel cycle, permeation, primary heat transport system, tritium recovery and removal, water-cooled lead–lithium, WCLL
A major objective of the European fusion program is the design of the DEMOnstration power plant named DEMO. Up to now, most fusion experiments have been dedicated to a plasma physics investigation while, in DEMO-oriented activities, large attention is devoted also to other systems necessary to produce tritium and to convert the fusion power to electricity. The blanket region, responsible for tritium breeding, is characterized by high tritium concentrations, high temperature, and large heat transfer metallic surfaces in which tritium can permeate. Therefore, the problem of tritium permeation and the resulting tritium content in the primary coolant are of great relevance for DEMO. For the pre-conceptual design of the Water-Cooled Lead−Lithium variant, the tritium permeation rate from blanket into coolant was assessed and possible mitigation strategies were suggested. Starting from a review of the CANDU tritium experience, a preliminary assessment of the maximum tritium concentration targ... [more]

Keywords: demand response, distribution grid congestion management, flexibility register, local flexibility market, location information, voltage control
The economic and technical requirements of current changes in the distribution system are reflected in the use of all available resources and the activation of mechanisms for local use of flexibility. Local flexibility markets are evolving and face numerous obstacles for which appropriate solutions must be found. The local flexibility market will be complemented by the development of a local flexibility register, which will contain all relevant information about the flexibility assets necessary for the efficient operation of the local flexibility market. In this paper, interpretation and quantification of the flexibility sources location on the flexibility service in the distribution grid is given. The information is derived from power flow simulation results and finally written down in the form of line coefficients, which are determined by applying the least squares method to the power flow results. We have developed a Python-based simulator to perform the methodology to determine the... [more]

Keywords: classroom, CO2 concentration, COVID risk, energy simulation, opening window, thermal comfort, ventilation
In this study, a controller method for window opening was developed to naturally ventilate a classroom with 30 occupants. The aim was to improve indoor environment quality and limit the probability of COVID infection risk simultaneously. The study was based on a building performance simulation using combined EnergyPlus, CONTAM, and Python programs. Seven cases with automatically opening windows were considered. Opening window parameters were optimized by genetic algorithms. It was shown that the optimized controller with indoor environment functions improved classroom ventilation and considerably decreased CO2 concentration compared to a reference case where the windows were opened only during breaks, and the controller also improved occupants’ thermal comfort. However, there was a noticeable increase in energy demand, caused by the increased air change rate. Introducing the probability of infection risk function to the controller did not reduce the transmission risk substantially, and... [more]

Keywords: adaptive tracking estimator, parameter variations, rotor position estimation, variable-leakage-flux permanent magnet (VLF-PM) motor
Due to the characteristics of inductance parameter mismatch and back electromotive force harmonics caused by novel leakage flux branches and other non-ideal factors for the variable-leakage-flux permanent magnet (VLF-PM) motor, its control system suffers from a deteriorated performance of the rotor position estimation. To overcome the problems mentioned above, an adaptive tracking estimator of the rotor position is proposed in this paper for the VLF-PM motor control system. First, the proposed method simplifies the VLF-PM motor mathematical model and reduces the effect of inductance parameter variations according to the active flux concept. Then, robust and gradient descent algorithms are utilized to maintain the robustness of inductance parameter variations and eliminate the specific order harmonics owing to the novel leakage flux branches. Meanwhile, the accuracy and stability are enhanced. Furthermore, the position compensation based on the current adaptive tracking strategy is prop... [more]

Keywords: free cells, honey, immobilization of cells, mead, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, sodium alginate
This work studied the production of mead using second category honey and the immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in sodium alginate, with concentrations of 2% and 4%, and their reuse in five successive fermentations. The immobilized cells with 4% alginate beads were mechanically more stable and able to allow a greater number of reuses, making the process more economical. The fermentation’s consumption of sugars with free cells (control) and immobilized cells showed a similar profile, being completed close to 72 h, while the first use of immobilized cells finished at 96 h. The immobilized cells did not significantly influence some oenological parameters, such as the yield of the consumed sugars/ethanol, the alcohol content, the pH and the total acidity. There was a slight increase in the volatile acidity and a decrease in the production of SO2. The alginate concentrations did not significantly influence either the parameters used to monitor the fermentation process or the char... [more]

Keywords: biocalorimetry, bioPAT, control, Crabtree-positive microorganism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Typical controllers for fed-batch cultivations are based on the estimation and control of the specific growth rate in real time. Biocalorimetry allows one to measure a heat signal proportional to the substrate consumed by cells. The derivative of this heat signal is usually used to evaluate the specific growth rate, introducing noise to the resulting estimate. To avoid this, this study investigated a novel controller based directly on the heat signal. Time trajectories of the heat signal setpoint were modelled for different specific growth rates, and the controller was set to follow this dynamic setpoint. The developed controller successfully followed the setpoint during aerobic cultivations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, preventing the Crabtree effect by maintaining low glucose concentrations. With this new method, fed-batch cultivations of S. cerevisiae could be reliably controlled at specific growth rates between 0.075 h−1 and 0.20 h−1, with average root mean square errors of 15 ± 3%.

Keywords: finite control set, fuzzy adaptive theory, induction motor, model predictive torque control, ripple attenuation
Finite control set model predictive torque control (FCS-MPTC) strategy has been widely used in induction motor (IM) control due to its fast response characteristic. Although the dynamics of the FCS-MPTC method are highly commended, its steady-state performance—ripple deserves attention in the meantime. To improve the steady-state performance of the IM drives, this paper proposes an improved FCS-MPTC strategy, based on a novel fuzzy adaptive speed controller and an adaptive weighting factor, tuning strategy to reduce the speed, torque and flux ripples caused by different factors. Firstly, a discrete predicting plant model (PPM) with a new flux observer is established, laying the ground for achieving an FCS-MPTC algorithm accurately. Secondly, after analyzing the essential factors in establishing a fuzzy adaptive PI controller, with high ripple suppression capacity, an improved three-dimensional controller is designed. Simultaneously, the implementation procedures of the fuzzy adaptive P... [more]

Keywords: line-integral Lyapunov function, projection lemma, static output control, stochastic system, T–S fuzzy systems
Considering some unmeasurable states, a fuzzy static output control problem of nonlinear stochastic systems is discussed in this paper. Based on a modelling approach, a Takagi−Sugeno (T−S) fuzzy system, constructed by a family of stochastic differential equations and membership functions, is applied to represent nonlinear stochastic systems. Parallel distributed compensation (PDC) technology is used to construct the static output controller. A line-integral Lyapunov function (LILF) is used to derive some sufficient conditions for guaranteeing the asymptotical stability in the mean square. From the LILF, a potential conservatism produced by the derivative of the membership function is eliminated to increase the relaxation of sufficient conditions. Furthermore, those conditions are transferred into linear matrix inequality (LMI) form via projection lemma. According to the convex optimization algorithm, the feasible solutions are directly obtained to establish the static output fuzzy cont... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, distillation column, small datasets, soft sensor, transfer learning
In the development of soft sensors for industrial processes, the availability of data for data-driven modeling is usually limited, which led to overfitting and lack of interpretability when conventional deep learning models were used. In this study, the proposed soft sensor development methodology combining first-principle simulations and transfer learning was used to address these problems. Source-domain models were obtained using a large amount of data generated by dynamic simulations. They were then fine-tuned by a limited amount of real plant data to improve their prediction accuracies on the target domain and guaranteed the models with correct domain knowledge. An industrial C4 separation column operating at a refining unit was used as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. Results showed that fine-tuned networks could obtain better accuracy and improved interpretability compared to a simple feedforward network with or without regularization, especially when... [more]

Keywords: analytical design of aggregated regulators, cascade control system, chemical reactor, computer simulation, synergetic control theory, thermal condition
The paper deals with two approaches to the synthesis of a non-linear control system of the thermal regime of a liquid-phase chemical reactor at the realization of a bimolecular exothermic reaction. Synthesis of control algorithms is carried out by the method of analytical design of aggregated regulators (ADAR). The first variant assumes synthesis of temperature controller by classic ADAR method on the basis of a sequential set of invariant manifolds. The second one is based on the cascade control system structure. Computer simulation is used to study and compare the synthesized control systems.

Keywords: decentralized water systems, district metered areas, graph theory search algorithms, water distribution network sectorization, water distribution system
Many water supply systems, conceived to operate in centralized manner, face difficulties to adapt to dynamic changes, such as population growth, city extension, and industrial development. Decentralization of these systems may be an effective solution. Known techniques for distribution network sectorization design can help to achieve such a goal, but this has not been recognized in the literature. None of those known techniques considers the conversion of a centralized system to a decentralized one. In this paper, two new distinct yet complementary methodologies for water supply system decentralization by distribution network sectorization are proposed and implemented in a software decision support tool freely available on internet. The first methodology identifies the main flow paths from water sources to some strategic nodes and considers the nodes in these paths as new potential sources for dividing the rest of the network. The second methodology sectorizes the network according to... [more]

Keywords: bubble size, flotation, oscillatory air supply, sparger
Bubble size is crucial for determining flotation efficiency. Fine bubbles can be cost-effectively generated using a multi-orifice sparger with oscillatory air supply. Sparger configuration is defined by the orifice size, the plate thickness and the chamber volume. To date, the effect of sparger configuration on bubble size with oscillatory air supply is not clear yet. To facilitate the control of bubble size formed with oscillatory air supply, the present work investigated the dependence of bubble size on sparger configuration. It was found that bubble size was positively correlated with the chamber volume and the orifice size, while a nonlinear relationship was observed with the plate thickness. Besides, it was found that flotation recovery decreased over increasing bubble size when changing the sparger configuration. The results indicated that sparger configuration exhibited a significant effect on flotation performance via influencing bubble size when oscillatory air supply was appl... [more]
Predictive Process Adjustment by Detecting System Status of Vacuum Gripper in Real Time during Pick-Up Operations

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fault Detection, predictive process adjustment, real-time monitoring, sensor data, vacuum gripper
In manufacturing systems, pick-up operations by vacuum grippers may fail owing to manufacturing errors in an object’s surface that are within the allowable tolerance limits. In such situations, manual interference is required to resume system operation, which results in considerable loss of time as well as economic losses. Although vacuum grippers have many advantages and are widely used in the industry, it is highly difficult to directly monitor the current machine status and provide appropriate recovery feedback for stable operation. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to detect the success or failure of a suction operation in advance by analyzing the amount of outlet air pressure in the Venturi line. This was achieved by installing an air pressure sensor on the Venturi line to predict whether the current suction action will be successful. Through empirical experiments, it was found that downward movements in the z-axis of the vacuum gripper can easily rectify a faulty gripper su... [more]

Keywords: gas extraction, hard roof, pressure relief, thick sandstone, vertical gas migration
Close seam group mining under thin immediate roofs and thick sandstone walls is typically performed with a strong mine pressure and gas concentration, which pose considerable risks to miners. In this study, the mechanism of pressure relief and permeability enhancement to enhance gas extraction for mining safety through blasting roof cutting were investigated through theoretical analyses, numerical simulations, and laboratory tests. The results revealed that, near the blast-hole, which produced numerous cracks, blasting disturbed the integrity of the thick-layer roofs and redistributed the stress near the blast-hole, which prevented violent mine pressure caused by excessive fracture distances on the thick and hard roofs, reduced the additional load on the support, increased vertical gas migration, and ameliorated the effect of gas drainage caused by high-level boreholes. The field applications of forced roof cutting through deep-hole blasting in the II 7224N face of the Renlou coal mine... [more]

Keywords: communication protocol, decentralized, Fault Detection, fault-tolerant control, interconnection influence
The nonlinear interconnected system is a complex and important system in daily production and life in general. Due to the interconnection influence between subsystems and external disturbance factors, the system is prone to failure. For this kind of system, a decentralized fault detection and fault tolerant control method is proposed here. Compared with the traditional control scheme, this paper designs a subsystem communication protocol to reduce the information exchange between subsystems. Based on this communication protocol, a fault detection scheme is then designed. Due to the existence of a fault detection threshold in this scheme, the system can detect the fault in time without missing it or having a false alarm. Under the assumed condition, the adaptive control rate is obtained by establishing the adaptive approximation model to approximate the upper bound of the fault, and the subsystem adaptively adjusts the control rate according to the fault condition, so that the system ca... Keywords: Broyden’s update, economic model predictive control, gradient estimation, linear regression, modifier adaptation, real-time optimization
Various offset-free economic model predictive control schemes that include a disturbance model and the modifier-adaptation principle have been proposed in recent years. These schemes are able to reach plant optimality asymptotically even in the presence of plant−model mismatch. All schemes are affected by a major issue that is common to all modifier-adaptation formulations, namely, plant optimality (note that convergence per se does not require perfect plant gradients) requires perfect knowledge of static plant gradients, which is a piece of information not known in most practical applications. To address this issue, we present two gradient-estimation techniques, one based on Broyden’s update and the other one on linear regression. We apply these techniques for the estimation of either the plant gradients or the modifiers directly. The resulting economic MPC schemes are tested in a simulation and compared on two benchmark examples of different complexity with respect to both convergenc... [more]
Gain-Scheduled Model Predictive Control for a Commercial Vehicle Air Brake System

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air brake system, gain-scheduled model predictive control, linearization through system identification, LPV model, proportional valve
This paper presents a control-oriented Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) model for commercial vehicle air brake systems with the electro-pneumatic proportional valve based on the nonlinear mathematical model, a set of discrete-time linearized models at different target pressures with the q-Markov Cover system identification method. The scheduled parameters for the LPV model were the brake chamber pressure, which was controlled by the electro-pneumatic proportional valve. On the basis of the LPV model, a family of Model Predictive Control (MPC) controllers with a Kalman filter was designed at each operation point. Then, the gain-scheduled MPC was designed over the entire operating range with the switched strategy, which was validated by experimental data. Furthermore, compared with the PID controller, the performance of the system was improved with a gain-scheduled MPC controller.
A TITO Control Strategy to Increase Productivity in Uncertain Exothermic Continuous Chemical Reactors

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exothermic chemical reactors, optimal control, optimal reactor productivity, temperature stabilization
In this manuscript, a two-input two-output (TITO) control strategy for an exothermic continuous chemical reactor is presented. The control tasks of the continuous chemical reactor are related to temperature regulation by a standard proportional-integral (PI) controller. The selected set point increases reactor productivity due to the temperature effect and prevents potential thermal runaway, and the temperature increases until it reaches isothermal operating conditions. Then, an optimal controller is activated to increase the mass reactor productivity. The optimal control strategy is based on a Euler-Lagrange framework, in which the corresponding Lagrangian is based on the model equations of the reactor, and the optimal controller is coupled with an uncertainty estimator to infer the unknown terms required by the proposed controller. As a benchmark, a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with a Van de Vusse chemical reaction is considered as an application case study. Notably, the pr... [more]
