Mixed-Integer Distributed Ant Colony Optimization of Dump Load Allocation with Improved Islanded Microgrid Load Flow
Maen Z. Kreishan, Ahmed F. Zobaa
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ant colony optimization, backward/forward sweep, droop control, dump load, islanded microgrid, load flow, multi-objective optimization
Dump load (DL) utilization at low demand hours in highly penetrated islanded microgrid is of great importance to offer voltage and frequency regulation. Additionally, load flow (LF) convergence is vital to optimize the working states of the DL allocation problem. Hence, more analysis is necessary to highlight the significance of DL in power regulation while observing the influence of LF on solution accuracy. This article proposes two LF techniques derived from backward/forward sweep (BFS), viz., general BFS (GBFS) and improved special BFS (SBFS-II). The latter is based on global voltage shared between generating units, while the former has a more general approach by considering generating bus’s local voltage. The optimal sizing and sitting of DL with optimum droop sets are determined using the mixed-integer distributed ant colony optimization (MIDACO) with the two new LF methods. The optimization problem was formulated to minimize voltage and frequency deviations as well as power losse... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: benchmarking models, chiller, dependent faults, detection, diagnosis
This paper presents the development and use of benchmarking grey-box models for the detection and diagnosis of multiple-dependent faults (MDFDD) of a water-cooled centrifugal chiller. Models are developed using data recorded by a Building Automation System (BAS) from a central cooling plant of an institutional building. The forward residual-based fault detection model identifies a fault symptom, when the difference between the measured value of target variable and benchmarking value exceeds the corresponding threshold. For the fault diagnosis, most publications start from a known single fault and establish the impact on following variables in the system. This paper presents a rule-based backward approach. The proposed method identifies if (i) the fault symptom is correct (i.e., a variable has abnormal values), or (ii) the fault symptom is incorrect (i.e., the symptom of target variable is caused by impacts generated by other faulty variables due to the dependency between variables), or... Keywords: arc fault detection, fault location, line selection, NILM, non-intrusive load monitoring, series arc, smart grid, smart metering
Series arc faults cause the majority of household fires involving electrical failures or malfunctions. Low-fault current amplitude is the reason for the difficulties faced in implementing effective arc detection systems. The paper presents a novel arc detection and faulty line identification method. It can be easily used in the low-voltage Alternate Current (AC) household network for arc detection in the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Unlike existing methods, the proposed approach exploits both current and voltage signal time domain analysis. Experiments have been conducted with up to six devices operating simultaneously in the same circuit with an arc fault generator based on the IEC 62606:2013 standard. Sixteen time-domain features were used to maximize the arc-fault detection accuracy for particular appliances. Performance of the random forest classifier for arc fault detection was evaluated for 28 sets of features with five different sampling rates. For the single period ana... [more]

Keywords: high−gain disturbance observer, improved ultra−local model, permanent magnet synchronous motor, predictive current control
Predictive current control (PCC) is an advanced control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). When the motor drive system is undisturbed, predictive current control exhibits a good dynamic response speed and steady−state performance, but the conventional PCC control performance of PMSM that depends on the motor body model is vulnerable to parameter perturbation. Aiming at this problem, an improved model−free predictive current control (IMFPCC) strategy based on a high−gain disturbance observer (HGDO) is proposed in this paper. The proposed strategy is introduced with the idea of model−free control, relying only on the system input and output to build an ultra−local current prediction model, which gets rid of the constraints of the motor body parameters. In the paper, the ultra−local structure is optimized by comparing and analyzing the equation of the state of the classical ultra−local structure and PMSM system. The system’s current state variables are incorporated i... [more]

Grid-connected hybrid energy systems (HESs) represent a very promising option for addressing the problem of power outages worldwide. The selection of a suitable optimization approach and operational strategy are important aspects of the optimal design and operation of these HESs. This study aimed to find the optimal grid-connected PV/battery system sizes to supply electricity for a residential house in Karbala, Iraq, using two control strategies, load following (LF) and cycle charging (CC). The optimization was performed using HOMER software with and without the multi-year effects. The comparison analysis was carried out by considering the techno-economic and environmental performance of the feasible systems. The simulation results indicate that optimal configuration is achieved by using the CC strategy. Furthermore, the multi-year module affects the optimal results dramatically. Under the CC strategy, the multi-year effects increase the required PV size from 6 kW to 7 kW and the requi... [more]

Keywords: 1D modeling, ECMS, hybrid vehicles, ICE thermal state, Optimization
Energy management in electrified vehicles is critical and directly impacts the global operating efficiency, durability, driveability, and safety of the vehicle powertrain. Given the multitude of components of these powertrains, the complexity of the proper control is significantly higher than the conventional internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV). Hence, several control algorithms and numerical methods have been developed and implemented in order to optimize the operation of the hybrid powertrain while complying with the required boundary conditions. In this work, a model-based method is used for predicting the impacts of a set of possible control actions, choosing the one minimizing the associated costs. In particular, the energy management technique used in the present study is the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). The novelty of this work consists of taking into account the thermal state of the ICE for optimization. This feature was implemented by means of an... [more]

Keywords: Direct Field-Oriented Control (DFOC), induction generator, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulator (SPWM), three-level inverter
The article presents an induction generator connected to the power grid using the AC/DC/AC converter and LCL coupling filter. Three-level inverters were used in the converter, both from the generator side and the power grid side. The algorithm realizing Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) in inverters has been simplified to the maximum. Control of the induction generator was based on the Direct Field-Oriented Control (DFOC) method. At the same time, voltage control has been used for this solution. The MPPT algorithm has been extended to include the variable pitch range of wind turbine blades. The active voltage balancing circuit has been used in the inverter DC voltage circuit. In the control system of the grid converter with an LCL filter, the number of measurements was limited to the measurement of power grid currents and voltages. Synchronization of control from the power grid side is ensured by the use of a PLL loop with the system of preliminary suppression of undesired harmonics.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascaded multilevel converter, linear generator, wave energy converter
This paper proposes a control scheme for a wave energy conversion system based on a linear generator and a cascaded multilevel converter. The mechanical conversion system is composed of a buoy connected directly to a linear generator. The windings of the generator are individually controlled by a cascaded multilevel power converter using independent maximum power point tracking to improve energy harvesting. The output of the cascaded converter is controlled to keep the DC capacitors balanced and generate a multilevel voltage at the output terminals which reduces the losses in the underwater transmission line. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed control scheme maximizing the power generation by imposing a current with the same waveform of the induced voltage and balancing the DC capacitors.

Keywords: injector control valve, outlet throttle diameter deviation, pressure relief rate, rail pressure, response characteristics, sensitivity analysis
Common rail injector response characteristics depend on the control chamber pressure change rate, the outlet throttle diameter by manufacturing errors, or wear-induced deviations that affect the rate of pressure change in the control chamber, so the accuracy of the outlet throttle diameter directly affects the control valve response consistency. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the effect of the deviation of the outlet throttle diameter on the average mass flow rate of the outlet throttle during the opening of the spherical valve in order to reduce this difference and ensure uniform injection characteristics. The results illustrate that with the increase in outlet throttle diameter deviation, the volume of gas phase in the control valve increases and the rate of pressure reduction in the control chamber accelerates, and the sensitivity coefficient of the average mass flow rate of the outlet throttle to the outlet throttle diameter deviation remains... Keywords: AC machines, back EMF, fault-tolerant control, feedforward compensation, induction motors
In this paper, a fault-tolerant three-phase induction drive based on field-oriented control is studied, and an analytical approach is proposed to elucidate the limitations of FOC in flux-torque regulation from the controller perspective. With an open-phase fault, the disturbance terms appear in the controller reference frame and degrade the controller performance when operating in a d-q plane with DC quantities. In addition, the hardware reconfiguration, which is essential to operate faulted three-phase drives, causes substantial change in the way the control parameters vd, vq are reflected onto the machine terminals. An accurate understanding of the feedforward term, by considering the open-phase fault and the hardware modifications, is provided to re-enable the FOC in presence of an open-phase fault. Furthermore, the concept of feedforward term derivation is generically extended to cover multiphase induction drives encountering an open-phase fault whereby no hardware reconfiguration... [more]

Keywords: bearings, CEEMDAN, fault diagnosis, fuzzy entropy, GWO-KELM, wind turbine
To solve the problem of fault signals of wind turbine bearings being weak, not easy to extract, and difficult to identify, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method for fan bearings based on Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) and Grey Wolf Algorithm Optimization Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (GWO-KELM). First, eliminating the interference of noise on the collected vibration signal should be conducted, in which the wavelet threshold denoising approach is used in order to reduce the noise interference with the vibration signal. Next, CEEMDAN is used to decompose the signal after a denoising operation to obtain the multi-group intrinsic mode function (IMF), and the feature vector is selected by combining the correlation coefficients to eliminate the spurious feature components. Finally, the fuzzy entropy for the chosen IMF component is input into the GWO-KELM model as a feature vector for defect detection. After diagnosing the Case Western Re... [more]

Massive growth in global electrical energy demand has necessitated a genuine exploration and integration of solar and wind energy into the electrical power mix. This incorporation goes a long way in improving the cumulative generated power capacity of the power system. However, wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) are intermittent in nature, making the provisioning of a good maximum power tracking (MPPT) scheme necessary. Furthermore, the integration is characterized by synchronization challenges and introduces various modes of power system oscillations as it is converter-driven. This greatly affects the overall stability of the integrated power mix. Consequently, various technological models have been designed to address these challenges ranging from MPPT schemes, phase-lock loop (PLL), virtual synchronous generator (VSG), power system stabilizers (PSS), flexible AC transmission system (FACTS), coordinated control and artificial intelligence (AI). In this paper, based on the multi-scale multi-domain (MSMD) battery modeling approach, the NTGK model was used to model the 18650 cylindrical lithium-ion single battery on the electrochemical sub-scale. The model was successful, as it was able to fit the experimental voltage and temperature of the battery at different temperatures. Lithium-ion battery discharge capacity and energy output can be improved during cold starting by preheating and insulation, as demonstrated by a comparison of the impacts of heat transfer coefficient and preheating duration at −20 °C ambient temperature. For the traditional heating method, the heating model of heating film (HF) and liquid-cooled plate (LCP) is constructed in this paper, and the heating performance of both is compared by Fluent. Analysis of the energy balance of Li-ion battery at low temperatures has been presented, showing that Li-ion battery requires a suitable start-up temperature to maximize energy output. Keywords: multilevel inverter control, three-level NPC inverter, two-phase induction motor
A three-level neutral point clamped inverter with three phase legs is often used to power three-phase electrical motors. This type of multilevel inverter has its advantages over two-level inverters. The main advantages are lower harmonic distortion and less stress on motor windings. This three-level inverter can be also used as a power source for a two-phase induction motor. A one-phase induction motor with a starting capacitor and auxiliary windings is in fact a two-phase induction motor. In this article, we show that the switching number reduction method, previously presented for use with three-phase induction motors, can be used with two-phase motors as well, after some crucial modifications. The reduction of switching decreases the switching losses. The switching number reduction is obtained with modified space vector modulation using redundant voltage vectors. The method was simulated and then implemented on a prototype 3L-NPC inverter powering a one-phase induction motor with aux... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy logic, fuzzy set, incremental conductance, maximum power point tracking, photovoltaic, power converters control
Photovoltaic (PV) panels are devices capable of transforming solar energy into electricity without emissions. They are still a trending technology in the market not only because of the renewable features but also due to the avoidance of movable parts, which makes them an option with low maintenance. If the output voltage is insufficient or needs to be regulated, a boost converter is commonly connected to a PV panel. In this article, a commercial PV with a boost converter is controlled through a dSPACE platform for a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) task. Due to previous related experience, a fuzzy logic technique is designed and tested in real-time. The results are compared with an incremental conductance (IncCond) algorithm because it is a feasible and reliable tool for MPPT purposes. The outcomes show enhancement (in comparison with IncCond) in the steady-state oscillation, response time and overshoot values, which are 73.2%, 81.5% and 52.9%, respectively.
