Zhe Zhang, Haitao Ding, Konghui Guo, Niaona Zhang
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed model predictive control, electric vehicles, energy management, torque allocation
In this study, a hierarchical chassis control strategy is designed to enhance vehicle economy and safety for four-wheel independent-drive electric vehicles (FWID-EVs). In the upper-level, a vehicle dynamics model based on multiple agents is proposed, and a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) method is designed to dimensionally solve the problem of tracking the center-of-mass torque of the demanded velocity trajectory and stability parameters. In the bottom-level, a multi-objective torque distribution strategy that weighs safety, dynamics and economy based on multi-agent theory is designed by comprehensively considering the motor efficiency and tire energy loss. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform is built to verify the method formulated in this paper. The results show that the method in this paper is effective in tracking the desired trajectory and further enhancing the stability of the vehicle under various conditions. Compared with other algorithms, whil... [more]
A Pre-Sizing Method for Salient Pole Synchronous Reluctance Machines with Loss Minimization Control for a Small Urban Electrical Vehicle Considering the Driving Cycle

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-design optimization, driving cycle, electric vehicle, SynRM
In this paper, a design methodology for synchronous reluctance machines (SynRM) working with variable torque and speed profiles was presented. Unlike conventional solutions which size the machine considering a reduced number of working points in order to reduce the computation time, the solution proposed in this paper takes into account all the points which allow for better management of the constraints along the cycle to avoid an oversizing of the machine. To solve this problem with a reduced computation time, the geometry of the motor as well as the control strategy were optimized in two steps. In the first step, the d-q axis stator currents were analytically expressed. In the second step, the geometry was optimized with the use of a genetic algorithm. As an application of this method, the case of a small and low-cost electric vehicle (EV) was chosen with the objective of minimizing both the mass and the energy lost for the standardized urban dynamometer driving schedule (UDDS). The... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: GPS RTK, lighting measurement, road illuminance, street lighting
Street lighting should realise normative illuminance levels throughout the roadway. The determination of the illuminance level of a road requires the use of a measurement technique based on classic point measurements at a specific grid of measurement points. Classical stationary measurements using the method indicated in the prescriptive requirements are time-consuming and labor-intensive. The authors of the article have presented a concept of a measurement system that could be used to partially automate road lighting measurements and increase their universality. The proposed measurement system uses the simultaneous measurement of illuminance values from lux meters located on the roof of the vehicle. The measurement is carried out while the vehicle is driving on a lit road, and the illuminance values are localized using a global GPS satellite location system equipped with RTK corrections. The use of GPS RTK localization data corrections allowed the measurement results to be unambiguous... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric drive, nonlinear control, robust control, two-mass system
Precise motion control remains one of the most important problems in modern technology. It is especially difficult in the case of two-mass systems with flexible coupling if only the motor position and velocity are measured. We propose a new methodology of control system design in this situation. The concept is founded on a robust observer design, based on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) solution. The observer cooperates with the original nonlinear controller. The presented approach allows us to solve the position tracking problem for a two-mass drive, with unknown parameters, in the presence of disturbances (for instance, nonlinear friction-like torques) acting on both ends of the flexible shaft. Under this set of assumptions, the problem was never solved previously. The closed-loop system stability is investigated, and the uniform ultimate boundedness of state estimation errors and tracking errors is proven using Lyapunov techniques. Numerical properties of the design procedure and c... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: denoising, feature extraction, FEI, IMRSVD, vibration signal
This paper proposes a denoising method of vibration signal based on improved multiresolution singular value decomposition (IMRSVD) and effective component selection. A new construction method of trajectory matrix is used, which can enhance the oscillating component of the original signal. Next, based on the improved trajectory matrix, singular value decomposition (SVD), which plays the role of pre-decomposition, is used to obtain multiple one-dimensional components, and the further decomposition of that is achieved by multiresolution singular value decomposition (MRSVD). Finally, the effective components selection of a series of decomposed signal components is achieved based on the proposed feature evaluation index (FEI). The denoising experiments are carried out using the simulation signal and the vibration signal of planetary gear, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than the traditional SVD denoising method, and the weak fault feature... [more]

Near-Zero-Energy Buildings are a challenge in terms of energy production, storage, consumption and management, but these technological solutions remain financially difficult to access in developing countries. To this end, a complete low-cost and reliable home energy-management prototype was first developed and implemented on a scale model. A PWM charge controller drove the flow of energy produced and consumed in order to ensure the optimization of both the consumption of energy and energy savings. Battery storage was also managed by the home automation module using a set of sensors. The prototype of the scale model incorporated complete energy management of all electrical devices with group priorities through a graphical interface in a real-time mode. After testing this system, the lighting management part was implemented in a large-scale smart solar home. A smart lighting system via a complete algorithm integrated on an Arduino Mega board was then realized and implemented in the life-... [more]

Keywords: integrated model of distributed systems, model checking, railway traffic control safety, railway traffic control system verification, relay-based railway traffic control systems modeling
Relay-based traffic control systems are still used in railway control systems. Their correctness is most often verified by manual analysis, which does not guarantee correctness in all conditions. Passenger safety, control reliability, and failure-free operation of all components require formal proof of the control system’s correctness. Formal evidence allows certification of control systems, ensuring that safety will be maintained in correct conditions and the in event of failure. The operational safety of systems in the event of component failure cannot be manually checked practically in the event of various types of damage to one component, pairs of components, etc. In the article, we describe the methodology of automated system verification using the IMDS (integrated model of distributed systems) temporal formalism and the Dedan tool. The novelty of the presented verification methodology lays in graphical design of the circuit elements, automated verification liberating the designer... [more]

Keywords: additional damping control, dynamic power compensation control, hybrid energy storage system, low-frequency oscillation, photovoltaic plant
The use of the conventional dual closed-loop control strategy by photovoltaic (PV) plants with grid-connected inverters may weaken the damping of a power system, which may aggravate low-frequency oscillations (LFOs). This influence will become more severe as the penetration of PV plants increases. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate damping controls into PV plants to suppress LFOs. This paper proposed an additional compound damping control (ACDC) system that combines additional damping control (ADC) for the inverter with ADC-based dynamic power compensation control (DPCC), allowing hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) to suppress LFOs. First, the feasibility of suppressing low-frequency oscillations in PV plants is demonstrated by the torque method and a small signal model. Then, an additional damping controller is added to the active power control link of the PV inverter to enhance the damping abilities of the system. However, given that the damping performance of PV plants wit... [more]

The deformation control of roadways surrounded by rock in the fully mechanized amplification sections of extra-thick coal seams is problematic. To analyze the failure and failure characteristics of a support frame, as well as the deformation and failure processes of the surrounding rock, through theoretical analysis and industrial tests, the deformation and support conditions of a return airway of a fully mechanized caving face in an extra-thick coal seam in the Yangchangwan Coal Mine, in the Ningdong mining, area were examined. Combined with limit equilibrium theory and roadway section size, the width of the coal pillar of the return air roadway at the 130,205 working face was calculated to be 6 m. The layout scheme and implementation parameters of roof blasting pressure relief, coal pillar grouting modification, and bolt (cable) support were designed. Based on the analysis, a “Coal pillar optimization−roof cutting destressing−routing modification−rock bolting” system for surrounding... [more]

Keywords: autothermal reforming, Dimethyl Ether, hydrogen production, Model Predictive Control, temperature control
In this study, a thermodynamic analysis of the low temperature autothermal reforming (ATR) of dimethyl ether (DME) for hydrogen production was conducted. The Pd/Zn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst coated on the honeycomb cordierite ceramic was applied to catalyze the reaction, and the optimum activity temperature of this catalyst was demonstrated experimentally and through simulations to be 400 °C. Furthermore, an optimal model predictive control (MPC) strategy was designed to control the hydrogen production rate and the catalyst temperature. Experimental and simulation results indicated that the controller was automated and continuously reliable in the hydrogen production system. By establishing the state-space equations of the autothermal reformer, it can precisely control the feed rates of DME, high-purity air and deionized water. Ultimately, the hydrogen production rate can be precisely controlled when the demand curve changed from 0.09 to 0.23 mol/min, while the catalyst temperature was maintaine... [more]

Keywords: binary classification support vector machine (BCSVM), dissolved gas analysis (DGA), faults, IEC gas ratio, transformer
In South Africa, the growing power demand, challenges of having idle infrastructure, and power delivery issues have become crucial problems. Reliability enhancement necessitates a life-cycle performance analysis of the electrical power transformers. To attain reliable operation and continuous electric power supply, methodical condition monitoring of the electrical power transformer is compulsory. Abrupt breakdown of the power transformer instigates grievous economic detriment in the context of the cost of the transformer and disturbance in the electrical energy supply. On the condition that the state of the transformer is appraised in advance, it can be superseded to reduced loading conditions as an alternative to unexpected failure. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) nowadays has become a customary method for diagnosing transformer faults. DGA provides the concentration level of various gases dissolved, and consequently, the nature of faults can be predicted subject to the concentration lev... [more]

With the growing pressure to substitute fossil fuel-based generation, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have become one of the main solutions from the power sector in the fight against climate change. Offshore wind farms, for example, are an interesting alternative to increase renewable power production, but they represent a challenge when being interconnected to the grid, since new installations are being pushed further off the coast due to noise and visual pollution restrictions. In this context, Multi-Terminal High Voltage Direct Current (MT-HVDC) networks are the most preferred technology for this purpose and for onshore grid reinforcements. They also enable the delivery of power from the shore to offshore Oil and Gas (O&G) production platforms, which can help lower the emissions in the transition away from fossil fuels. In this work, we review relevant aspects of the operation and control of MT-HVDC networks for wind power integration. The review approaches topics such as the main ch... [more]

Keywords: compensated MV network, earth fault detection, efficiency improving, fault current passage indicator, high-resistance fault
The article presents a method for detecting earth faults in a compensated medium-voltage network, which can be used especially in fault current passage indicators, but also in standard protection devices. The method is based on the adaptation process of the zero-sequence current protection setting, with the adaptation factor depending on the current value of the zero-sequence voltage. In this article, a comparative analysis of the classical and adaptive zero-sequence current criterion is conducted, taking into account the errors of the measuring system. The results of simulations performed in the PSCad environment are also presented. For a representative set of example short circuits, it was shown that the effectiveness of the presented criterion can be more than 50% higher than that of the standard criteria, taking into account the range of detected transition resistances. A comparison of the proposed method with admittance criteria was also drawn, and it was shown that it is suitable... [more]

Keywords: autonomous systems, controllability, power industry, risk analysis, risk measure
Contemporary risk management is based on statistical analysis. Such an approach has a few crucial disadvantages. First of all, it has limited applicability to new technological solutions. In this paper, a new idea for risk evaluation and management is put forward. The proposed approach is based on the autonomous systems theory. The theoretical foundation of the proposed idea is described and its prospective applications are discussed. The proposed measures of risk are based on the idea of the controllability of the system—the greater the level of controllability, the lower the risk. Various aspects of controllability are analyzed—economic, technological, and industrial. For each aspect of controllability, the problem of defining adequate measures for the level of risk is discussed. The proposed approach allows the risk assessor to analyze the system deeply. As a consequence, the analyst can assess the risk based not only on a posteriori statistics but also on an analysis of the crucial... [more]

In high frequency AC (HFAC) distribution system, the resonant inverter is used to improve power quality and keep the stability of the output AC voltage. Aiming at the problems of poor output power quality and slow transient performance caused by unreasonable filter parameter design and load change during inverter operation, a single-phase H-bridge LCLC resonant inverter based on analog circuit controller implement is introduced in this paper for HFAC power distribution system (PDS). In this study, to design harmonic compensator and analyze the responsiveness of the inverter, it is necessary to analyze the output voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) of LCLC resonant inverter and the performance of the open loop system in detail. On the one hand, a proportional-integral-resonant (PIR) controller is designed to maintain the zero static error of the voltage output and suppress the output voltage THD of LCLC resonant inverter. On the other hand, an integral controller combines with phase... [more]

Keywords: coupled systems, inverter, nanogrid, robust controller, sequential design, uncertainty, μ-synthesis
Internal oscillations among multiple generation systems in low-voltage stand-alone nanogrids and small-scale microgrids can cause instability in the entire generation system. This issue becomes worse when the coupling strength between the generation systems increases, which is a result of a shorter distance between them and a smaller reactance to resistance ratio. Previous approaches, which were based on the independent control design and considered the coupling effect as disturbances, may fail to tackle this issue when the two generation systems become strongly coupled. Therefore, in this paper a novel method is proposed to handle this coupling effect by designing robust decentralized controllers in a sequential manner to address the problem of voltage and frequency control in a nanogrid. This proposed sequential design is a general technique that is applicable to multiple inverter-based generation systems in a nanogrid or small-scale microgrid. For the ease of demonstration, in this... [more]

In this paper, a low-order approximation (LOA) of fractional order PID (FOPID) for an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) based on the modified artificial bee colony (ABC) is proposed. The improved artificial bee colony (IABC) high-order approximation (HOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/HOA-FOPID) controller, which is distinguished by a significant order approximation and by an integer order transfer function, requires the use of a large number of parameters. To improve the AVR system’s performance in terms of transient and frequency response analysis, the memory capacity of the IABC/HOA-FOPID controller was lowered so that it could fit better in the corrective loop. The new robust controller is named the improved artificial bee colony (IABC) low-order approximation (LOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/LOA-FOPID). The performance of the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller was compared not only to the original ABC algorithm-tuned PID controller, but also to other controllers tuned by... [more]

The objective of the proposed work is to develop a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller and inverter controller by applying the adaptive least mean square (LMS) algorithm to control the total harmonics distortion of a solar photovoltaic system. The advantage of the adaptive LMS algorithm is given by its simplicity and reduced required computational time. The adaptive LMS algorithm is applied to modify the Perturb and Observe (P&O), MPPT controller. In this controller, the adaptive LMS algorithm is used to predict solar photovoltaic power. The adaptive LMS maximum power point tracking controller gives better optimal solutions with less steady error 0.7% (6 watts) and 0% peak overshot in power with the tradeoff being more settling time at 0.33 s. The development of the inverter control law is performed using the d-q frame theory. This helps to reduce the number of equations to build a control law. In recent years, the electromobility market has been growing faster and faster. Electric scooters and scooter-sharing services offered for them, available in many cities around the world, have a special impact on its intensification. The constantly growing number of scooters and service operators brings many problems related to the proper functioning of services. In the literature, one can find attempts to solve the problems of scooters with references to the issues of transport, modeling and optimization, as well as legislative and social aspects. Technical issues, however, are overlooked. Among them, however, there is a problem with the appropriate selection of scooter models that can be used in scooter-sharing systems. Solving this type of problem may allow systems to be better matched to urban transport systems, increase the development of electromobility and encourage societies to transition from current means of transport (e.g., cars) to scooters. Keywords: fast detection and isolation, low-impedance fault, mechanical switch (MS), Thomson coil (TC), Z-source circuit breaker (ZCB), Z-source circuit breaker with mechanical switch (MS-ZCB)
In this paper, a new design is provided so that the Z-source circuit breaker with a mechanical switch operates quickly at a low-impedance fault. When the fault occurs, the Z-source circuit breaker uses an impedance network to generate forced current zero crossing on the switch. This current zero-crossing time is not sufficient when mechanical switches are applied. In addition, since the MS switch operates through the fault detection sensor, the speed is slowed down. At a slower speed, the circuit breaker may not allow fault current isolation. To solve this problem, the Thomson coil was added to the circuit. It operates immediately in a low-impedance fault without additional fault detection devices. As a result, the faster operating speed is expected to reduce the size of the Z-source circuit breaker component and the stress of the breaker. It is mathematically analyzed and derived, and verified through simulations and experiments. The main features of the proposed model are fast detect... [more]

Keywords: data-driven model, distributed generators, frequency regulation, hydrogen energy storage, microgrid, Model Predictive Control
Hydrogen energy storage (HES) systems have recently received attention due to their potential to support real-time power balancing in a power grid. This paper proposes a data-driven model predictive control (MPC) strategy for HES systems in coordination with distributed generators (DGs) in an islanded microgrid (MG). In the proposed strategy, a data-driven model of the HES system is developed to reflect interactive operations of an electrolyzer, hydrogen tank, and fuel cell, and hence the optimal power sharing with DGs is achieved to support real-time grid frequency regulation (FR). The MG-level controller cooperates with a device-level controller of the HES system that overrides the FR support based on the level of hydrogen. Small-signal analysis is used to evaluate the contribution of FR support. Simulation case studies are also carried out to verify the accuracy of the data-driven model and the proposed strategy is effective for improving the real-time MG frequency regulation compar...
