February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy logic system, heating system, model predictive control (MPC), Optimization, Optimized Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller (OFSMC)
This paper aims to develop multi-objective optimized control methods to improve the performance of retrofitting building heating systems in reducing consumed energy as well as providing comfortable temperature in a multi-zone building. While researchers evaluate various controllers in specific systems, providing a comprehensive controller for retrofitting the existing heating systems of multi-zone buildings is less investigated. A case study approach with a four-story residential building is simulated. The building energy consumption is modeled by EnergyPlus. The model is validated with energy data. Then, the building steam system model is upgraded, and in the other case, renewed by a hydronic system instead of a steam one. Three optimized controller groups are developed, including Model Predictive Controller (MPC), fuzzy controllers (Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and an Optimized Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller (OFSMC)), and optimized traditional ones. These controllers were applied to t... [more]

Keywords: brain-machine interface, implantable medical device, misalignment tolerant, wireless power transmission
Wireless power is one of the new promising technologies for IoT applications. The use of arrays for power transfer to free-moving objects has revolutionized wireless power transmission (WPT) applications. Herein, we present an extendable platform for transmitting power to a moving object receiving power from an array. The transmitter (TX) consists of two overlapping layers of square planar coils rotated 45 degrees to each other to provide the best electromagnetic flux coverage. Each layer consists of four coils to further control the power supply to the small receiver (RX) coil. This overlapping star-shaped array is stimulated automatically by a power amplifier. This smart stimulation can deliver uniform power to the receiver regardless of rotation and misalignment inconsistencies by using the geometry of the transmitter array. Moreover, by changing the direction of the current of each small square component in each array using the flower-shaped current, a receiver coil perpendicular t... [more]

Keywords: analytic network process, day-ahead regulation, demand response, fuzzy inference, photovoltaic consumption, potential evaluation, temperature-control load
Temperature-control loads, such as residential air conditioners (ACs) and electric water heaters (EWHs), have become important demand response resources in the power system. However, due to the impact of various factors on users’ response behavior, it has been difficult for power grid operators to accurately evaluate the response potential under complex factor relationships to derive optimal incentive strategy. Therefore, it cannot achieve a win-win economic benefit between the grid and users. In this paper, a method combining Analytic Network Process (ANP) and Fuzzy logical inference is proposed to predict the user’s willingness firstly by taking residential AC load as an example. The weight of each factor affecting users’ willingness is analyzed, and main factors are selected as inputs of fuzzy logic inference to derive the willingness of the resident to actively regulate the AC. Then, this method is applied in evaluating the response potential of certain residential area in Beijing... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, deep LSTM, fault diagnosis, nuclear power plant, PCTRAN
As artificial intelligence technology has progressed, numerous businesses have used intelligent diagnostic technology. This study developed a deep LSTM neural network for a nuclear power plant to defect diagnostics. PCTRAN is used to accomplish data extraction for distinct faults and varied fault degrees of the PCTRAN code, and some essential nuclear parameters are chosen as feature quantities. Keywords: constantly acting thermally stratified energy source, damping of the flow pulsations, drag force control, lift force control, multiple Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, pulsing flow mode, steady bow shock wave, supersonic flow
A new method of high-speed flow control using permanently operating thermally stratified energy deposition is presented. The paper focuses on the analysis of the dependence of the characteristics of a steady supersonic flow and an aerodynamic (AD) body on the temperature values in the layers of a stratified source and the possibility of making the transition from one steady flow mode to another by changing the temperature in the layers. A detailed visualization of the dynamics of the fields of density, pressure, temperature, and local Mach number is presented during the controlled establishment of steady flow modes. Multiple generation of the Richtmyer−Meshkov instability is shown. The sharp peaks accompanying the development of the Richtmyer−Meshkov instabilities were obtained, which remain in the steady flow mode established under the action of a stratified energy source. Basic approaches for controlling the bow shock wave, drag and lift (pitch) forces (at zero angle of attack), and... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle grid integration, grid ancillary services, grid-connected filters, inverter-based resources, vector control
Electric vehicle grid integration (EVGI) is one of the most important parts of transportation electrification. However, large-scale EV charging/discharging can have an adverse effect on the distribution grid, due to a large amount of load being drawn from or fed back to the power grid. Additionally, the power electronics used in the grid interaction may impose additional complications, such as voltage and frequency deviation, harmonic distortion, etc. With proper control scheme designs for the grid-connected inverters, such complications can be mitigated, and several grid ancillary services, such as voltage and frequency support, reactive power support, and harmonic mitigation, can be facilitated from large-scale EVGI. In this study, a large-scale EVGI system is developed where the vector control implementation of a grid-connected inverter in the d-q reference frame is presented for providing different grid ancillary services using the EVGI system. The EVGI system is operated in differ... [more]

Keywords: magnetic resonance, no feedback, position estimation, power control, wireless power transfer
It is important to determine the position of the receiver (Rx) coils in wireless power transfer (WPT) system, and to control the power transmitted to the Rx coil based on this result. In particular, in a situation where there is no feedback between the primary side and the secondary side, it is difficult to control the received power because the information is limited. In this paper, a method for determining the position of the Rx coils and controlling the received power using limited parameters in a feedback-free WPT system is proposed. The proposed method is verified by constructing a 4×2 WPT system, and it is validated that the simulation result and the experimental result are consistent well. Furthermore, arbitrary power can be transmitted to the Rx coil based on the result of the position of the Rx coil. The experiment is conducted by transmitting about 1W to Rx 1 and Rx 2, and the efficiency for Rx 1 is about 32.93%, Rx 2 is 25.03%, and the overall efficiency is confirmed to be 5... [more]

Keywords: charging safety, consistency algorithm, DC microgrid, droop control, two-level control
A direct current (DC) microgrid containing a photovoltaic (PV) system, energy storage and charging reduces the electric energy conversion link and improves the operational efficiency of the system, which has a broad development prospect. The instability and randomness of PV and charging loads pose a challenge to the safe operation of DC microgrid systems. The safety of grid operation and charging need to be taken into account. However, few studies have integrated the safety of charging devices with grid operation. In this paper, a two-level control strategy is used for the DC microgrid equipped with hybrid energy storage systems (ESSs) with the charging equipment’s safety as the entry point. The primary control strategy combines the health of the charging equipment with droop control to effectively solve the problem of common DC bus voltage deviation and power distribution. The consistency the control algorithm for multiple groups of hybrid ESSs ensures the local side DC bus voltage le... [more]

This work presents a nonlinear model predictive control scheme with a novel structure of observers aiming to create a methodology that allows feasible implementations in industrial anaerobic reactors. In this way, a new step-by-step procedure scheme has been proposed and tested by solving two specific drawbacks reported in the literature responsible for the inefficiencies of those systems in real environments. Firstly, the implementation of control structures based on modeling depends on microorganisms’ concentration measurements; the technology that achieves this is not cost-effective nor viable. Secondly, the reaction rates cannot be considered static because, in the extended anaerobic digestion model (EAM2), the large fluctuation of parameters is unavoidable. To face these two drawbacks, the concentration of acidogens and methanogens, and the values of the two reaction rates considered have been estimated by a structure of two observers using data collected by sensors. After 90 days... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic wind farm modelling, ensemble Kalman filter, wind farm control, wind field estimation
Wind farm control methods allow for a more flexible use of wind power plants over the baseline operation. They can be used to increase the power generated, to track a reference power signal or to reduce structural loads on a farm-wide level. Model-based control strategies have the advantage that prior knowledge can be included, for instance by simulating the current flow field state into the near future to take adequate control actions. This state needs to describe the real system as accurately as possible. This paper discusses what state estimation methods are suitable for wind farm flow field estimation and how they can be applied to the dynamic engineering model FLORIDyn. In particular, we derive an Ensemble Kalman Filter framework which can identify heterogeneous and changing wind speeds and wind directions across a wind farm. It does so based on the power generated by the turbines and wind direction measurements at the turbine locations. Next to the states, this framework quantifi... [more]

Keywords: CSO-NN, ensemble learning, fault diagnosis, faults prediction, online DGA monitor
Power transformers are vital to the power grid and discovering the latent faults in advance is helpful for avoiding serious problems. This study addressed the problem of forecasting and diagnosing the faults of power transformers with small dissolved gas analysis (DGA) data samples that arise from faults in transformers with low occurrence rates. First, an online monitor that was developed in our previous work was applied to obtain the DGA data. Second, the ensemble learning (EL) of a bagging algorithm with bootstrap resampling was used to deal with small training samples. Finally, a criss-cross-optimized neural network (i.e., CSO-NN) was applied to the short-term prediction of the DGA data, based on which the transformer status could be forecasted. The case studies showed that the proposed EL-CSO-NN algorithm integrated into the monitor was capable of achieving satisfactory classification and prediction accuracy for transformer fault forecasting.

Qun Gao, Yan Jiang, Ke Peng, Lei Liu
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC distribution systems, first-order filter, stability analysis, virtual inertia control, voltage damping
DC distribution systems are a typical power electronic system with low inertia, low-rotational kinetic energy, and poor antidisturbance capability when loads fluctuate or parameters change. In this paper, a virtual inertia control with an additional first-order filtering link is proposed on the basis of P-Udc droop control. The results of the simulations and experiments verify that the additional inertia control reduces the voltage change rate and improves the system inertia by adjusting the virtual capacitance value on the DC side of the converter, which can achieve a smoother and more accurate voltage control and suppress the continuous voltage oscillation.

Keywords: broken rotor bar (BRB), induction motor (IM), motor current signature analysis (MCSA), review
The most often used motor in commercial drives is the induction motor. While the induction motor is operating, electrical, thermal, mechanical, magnetic, and environmental stresses can result in defects. Therefore, many researchers who are involved in condition monitoring have been interested in the development of reliable and efficient fault diagnostic technologies. This paper’s goal is to provide an overview of available fault detection methods for the broken rotor bar problem, one of several defects associated to induction motors. Despite the fact that it is less common than bearing or insulator failure, this fault may cause electrical machines to fail catastrophically. It can be quite harmful, especially in large motors, and it can develop as a result of manufacturing faults, repeated starting of the machine, mechanical stress, and thermal stress. Hence, a review on rotor defect diagnosis was conducted. In order to confirm rotor bar fracture, this research provides probable defect... [more]
Peak Shaving in District Heating Utilizing Adaptive Predictive Control
Jan Lorenz Svensen
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, data-driven modeling, district heating, MPC
District heating systems (DHS) are driven by the heat demands of their consumers, with higher demands giving a higher load on the heat production. While heat demands are human-dependent, they contain diurnal behaviors and weather dependencies. The diurnal behaviors contain periods with high demands causing peak loads on the heat production, which is operationally costly. This is especially true for heat pumps, a solution for DHS to include green energy, as the cost depends directly on the needed temperature. This paper presents a formulation of adaptive model predictive control (MPC) for inducing peak shaving on the production load to handle the peak load problem by using the DHS distribution network as a heat storage. It also presents a simulator model to describe the DHS. The MPC was applied to data from a case study of the DHS in Brønderslev, Denmark, showing a peak reduction of around 8%.

Keywords: AC–AC converter, Hexverter, modular multilevel converter
This article proposes the study, control and analysis of the topology of an AC−AC modular multilevel converter, known in the literature as the Hexverter. The Hexverter is capable of converting the energy between two AC systems with a reduced number of elements, if compared with other modular multilevel topologies, which makes this topology attractive in AC−AC applications. However, there are few studies about the Hexverter in the literature, so this work presents its operation principle, conducts modeling, and proposes a control scheme for the converter’s proper operation, validating the operation and control via hardware-in-the-loop emulation.

Keywords: Coanda effect, flow entrainment, nozzle, schlieren method, supersonic jet, thrust vector control
Thrust, propulsion, vector control of supersonic jets has been applied to jet and rocket engines, ejectors, and other many devices. In general, there are two approaches to this type of control, namely mechanical moving systems and fluidic thrust vector control systems without moving parts, with mechanical moving systems being the most common. However, generally speaking, these systems are very complicated, and more simple methods and devices are desired. In this study, an extremely simple method for the thrust vector control of a supersonic jet by a fluidic Coanda nozzle (FC-nozzle) using the entrainment of the surrounding fluid and Coanda effect is newly proposed. The FC-nozzle consists of a pipe nozzle (Pi-nozzle), spacer, and linearly expanded Coanda nozzle (Co-nozzle) with eight suction pipes (Su-pipes) installed to surround the jet from the Pi-nozzle. The jet from the Pi-nozzle flows straight with the entrainment flow of the surrounding fluid. When some Su-pipes are closed, the pr... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, contrast estimation, fault diagnosis, short-circuited turns, transformer fault, vibroacoustic signals
The transformer is one of the most important electrical machines in electrical systems. Its proper operation is fundamental for the distribution and transmission of electrical energy. During its service life, it is under continuous electrical and mechanical stresses that can produce diverse types of damage. Among them, short-circuited turns (SCTs) in the windings are one of the main causes of the transformer fault; therefore, their detection in an early stage can help to increase the transformer life and reduce the maintenance costs. In this regard, this paper proposes a signal processing-based methodology to detect early SCTs (i.e., damage of low severity) through the analysis of vibroacoustic signals in steady state under different load conditions, i.e., no load, linear load, nonlinear load, and both linear and nonlinear loads, where the transformer is adapted to emulate different conditions, i.e., healthy (0 SCTs) and with damage of low severity (1 and 2 SCTs). In the signal process... [more]

Keywords: asymmetric control, close-distance coal seams, roof rocks, stability, stopping space
Under the condition of fully mechanized top coal caving in close-distance coal seams, the surrounding rock of the stopping space easily loses stability during the withdrawal of mining equipment in the working face because the lower coal seam working face is located under the goaf and the overburden rock has a large range of complex interaction. Field investigation, theoretical analysis, laboratory experiment, similar simulation experiment, numerical simulation, and field industrial tests are used to carry out the research on the stability and control of the surrounding rock in the large section stopping space under the goaf in this paper. The research conclusions are as follows. (1) It is determined that the lower coal seam working face can only stop mining under the goaf, and the reasonable stopping position under the goaf should ensure that the key block fracture line of the main roof is behind the support. (2) The interaction law between the main roof’s key blocks of the upper and l... [more]
Minimum Current Optimization of DBSRC Considering the Dead-Time Effect

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-DC converter, dead-time, minimum current trajectory, phase-shift control, resonant converters, zero voltage switching
In a dual-bridge series resonant converter (DBSRC) working at a high switching frequency, the dead-time effect is a serious issue. When the minimum current trajectory (MCT) method is applied, the inductor current cannot be minimized due to the dead-time effect, and the range of the soft switching is reduced. Considering the dead-time, this paper first presents a theoretical analysis of the transmission power and the soft-switching characteristics based on the fundamental harmonic approximation (FHA) approach. Then, a minimum current trajectory method considering the dead-time (MCT-d) is proposed to achieve the minimum inductor current by compensating for the dead-time. This method can extend the soft-switching range as well. Finally, the experimental results validate the theoretical analysis and the improvement of the converter’s efficiency.

Keywords: adaptive compensator, converter control, quality of electricity, tunable inductive filter
This work focuses on the possibility of using a tuned inductor in electric power systems with adaptive features. The presented idea of inductor operation, using an interaction of the magnetic fluxes, is a new approach to designing such devices. Examples of power adaptive systems are devices for improving the quality of electricity. Therefore, various types of ‘compensators’ of reactive power (or both reactive and distortion power) are used in electrical systems as a preventive measure. The tuned inductor, presented in this work, offers wider possibilities for power compensation in electric systems, compared to the classic solutions of compensators based on fixed inductors. Another possible implementation of such an inductor solution is in static power electronic devices, installed in AC transmission grids to increase power transfer capability, stability, and controllability, through a series and/or shunt compensation. Nevertheless, the use of the proposed device in the aforementioned e... [more]

Keywords: gaussian noise, inter-area oscillations, Lyapunov theory, MATLAB/SIMULINK, MRAC, oscillations damping, rotor angle stability enhancement, SMIB, trajectory tracking controller
It is vital that the synchronous generator rotor angle be kept stable to avoid disastrous consequences such as the loss of synchronism amongst generators within a power system network. Once it is unstable, the time that is taken to remedy this is advised to be 5−10 s for smaller power systems and 15−20 s for larger ones. The instability that is caused by poorly damped Low-Frequency Electromechanical Oscillations (LFEOs) may result in inter-area oscillations, where a group of generators in one area oscillates against those in another area, thus affecting the stability of the entire network. This paper explores two control architectures, namely, a nonlinear Lyapunov-based trajectory tracking controller and a Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC) as options to enhance the stability of the rotor angle. The performance of each of these controllers was assessed under steady-state conditions, and then, the synchronous generator was subjected to Gaussian noise and an impulse. While the fi... [more]
