Overall Efficiency Improvement of a Dual Active Bridge Converter Based on Triple Phase-Shift Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DAB, Lagrange multiplier, power loss optimization, PSO, TPS
This paper proposes a control scheme based on an optimal triple phase-shift (TPS) control for dual active bridge (DAB) DC−DC converters to achieve maximum efficiency. This is performed by analyzing, quantifying, and minimizing the total power losses, including the high-frequency transformer (HFT) and primary and secondary power modules of the DAB converter. To analyze the converter, three operating zones were defined according to low, medium, and rated power. To obtain the optimal TPS variables, two optimization techniques were utilized. In local optimization (LO), the offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method was used, resulting in numerical optimums. This method was used for the low and medium power regions. The Lagrange multiplier (LM) was used for global optimization (GO), resulting in closed-form expressions for rated power. Detailed analyses and experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Additionally, obtained results are compared wi... [more]

Depositional and Diagenetic Controls on Reservoir Quality of Callovian-Oxfordian Stage on the Right Bank of Amu Darya
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Callovian-Oxfordian Stage, carbonate reservoir, depositional model, diagenetic process, flow unit, reservoir quality
Based on the detailed analysis of sedimentology, diagenesis, and petrophysics, this study characterized the Middle-Lower Jurassic Callovian-Oxfordian carbonate reservoirs of 68 key wells in the Amu Darya Basin and assessed the controlling factors on the quality of the target intervals. We identified 15 types of sedimentary facies developed in seven sedimentary environments using sedimentary facies analysis, such as evaporative platform, restricted platform, open platform, platform margin, platform fore-edge upslope, platform fore-edge downslope, and basin facies. The target intervals went through multiple diagenetic stages, including the syndiagenetic stage, early diagenetic stage, and middle diagenetic stage, all of which had a significant impact on the reservoir quality. Main diagenetic processes include dissolution and fracturing which improve the reservoir quality as well as cementation, compaction, and pressure solution that reduce the reservoir quality. By analyzing the reservoir... [more]

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach for Autonomous Power Flow Control Using Only Topology Changes
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, autonomous topology control, deep reinforcement learning, power system control
With the increasing complexity of power system structures and the increasing penetration of renewable energy, driven primarily by the need for decarbonization, power system operation and control become challenging. Changes are resulting in an enormous increase in system complexity, wherein the number of active control points in the grid is too high to be managed manually and provide an opportunity for the application of artificial intelligence technology in the power system. For power flow control, many studies have focused on using generation redispatching, load shedding, or demand side management flexibilities. This paper presents a novel reinforcement learning (RL)-based approach for the secure operation of power system via autonomous topology changes considering various constraints. The proposed agent learns from scratch to master power flow control purely from data. It can make autonomous topology changes according to current system conditions to support grid operators in making e... [more]

Analysis and Error Separation of Capacitive Potential in the Inductosyn
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: capacitive potential, error separation, inductosyn, suppression strategy
High-precision rotor position information is usually needed in permanent-magnet synchronous motors, which are critical to high-performance motor control based on vector algorithm. Therefore, inductosyn is the best choice for the permanent-magnet synchronous motor position sensor. Capacitive potential is an important component of the ineffective potential in the inductosyn angle measuring system. When the effective potential of the inductosyn approaches zero, the proportion of capacitive potential in the output potential will be greatly amplified. As a result, the zero-position accuracy will be seriously affected. Error potential and effective potential always exist at the same time, so it is difficult to measure and study quantitatively. In this paper, the capacitance network model of inductosyn was established and the analytical calculation method was proposed. The factors affecting the capacitive potential and the suppression strategy were studied through the combination of theoretic... [more]

High-Voltage Power Supply for High Repetitive Rate Marx Generator with Quasi-Resonant Zero-Current Switching Transistor Control Algorithm
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC-DC converters, high-voltage, Marx generator, parasitic capacitance
Due to having a number of advantages, Marx generators are still the most widely used devices for generating high-voltage pulses in many fields of science and technology. To ensure their proper operation, especially when the generation of many frequent, highly repetitive pulses is required, a highly efficient high-voltage power supply is needed. The paper describes a specially developed power supply (input voltage 48 V DC, output voltage up to 50 kV) based on the conventional Full Bridge topology with two high-frequency high-voltage transformers and a 6-stage voltage multiplier. In order to avoid many problems caused by low coupling between primary and secondary windings of the transformers and the large parasitic capacitances of the secondary windings, a special quasi-resonant zero-current switching transistor control algorithm with variable switching frequency (dependent on output load) was developed. In the described method, the energy is supplied to the transformer in short pulses,... [more]

Research Progress on Recoil Analysis and Control Technology of Deepwater Drilling Risers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control method, deepwater drilling riser, emergency disconnection, mud discharge, recoil response
The deepwater drilling riser is a very important and vulnerable connection between an offshore platform and subsea wellhead. Under some certain complex marine environment and operating conditions, the offshore platform may drift beyond the safe limitations or be driven away rapidly. In order to protect the safety of the platform, personnel and equipment, it is necessary to implement the emergency disconnection of the drilling riser. Since the riser is stretched under a normal connection, the riser will perform a recoil response under the combined effect of elastic potential energy and drilling fluid (mud) discharge frictional resistance after the emergency disconnection. There are complex mechanical mechanisms, influencing factors and difficult safety control problems in the recoil control process. Therefore, effectively controlling the recoil response of the deepwater drilling riser after emergency release has become one of the technical difficulties faced by deepwater drilling. The d... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional DC-DC converters, Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer, compensation networks, electric vehicles, switching control schemes, Vehicle-to-Grid
Owing to the constantly rising energy demand, Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)-equipped vehicles are being replaced by Electric Vehicles (EVs). The other advantage of using EVs is that the batteries can be utilised as an energy storage device to increase the penetration of renewable energy sources. Integrating EVs with the grid is one of the recent advancements in EVs using Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. A bidirectional technique enables power transfer between the grid and the EV batteries. Moreover, the Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer (BWPT) method can support consumers in automating the power transfer process without human intervention. However, an effective BWPT requires a proper vehicle and grid coordination with reasonable control and compensation networks. Various compensation techniques have been proposed in the literature, both on the transmitter and receiver sides. Selecting suitable compensation techniques is a critical task affecting the various design parameters. I... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, GTPV system, MATLAB GUI, PLC, Solar Photovoltaic
In this paper, a novel fault detection and diagnosis technique for a grid-tied photovoltaic (GTPV) with the ability of module-level fault location and differentiation is proposed. The proposed system measures the voltage, current, and temperature of the PV modules using low-cost sensors and critically compares them with the mathematical evaluated data to locate the type and location of the fault in the system. Additionally, a power line communication (PLC)-based low-cost PV monitoring system for tracking the operation of individual modules along with a fault detection algorithm is proposed to detect and locate the fault in the system. An intuitive online web application is also created to make it simple for users to view monitored data online. The suggested method is shown to have reduced computing needs; thus, the transmission of data and fault diagnosis is performed using the same microcontroller without the need for extra hardware or simulation software. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constitutive model, creep property, failure mode, gradient damage, high-temperature creep, red sandstone, strength characteristic
Red sandstone samples treated at high temperatures feature complex creep properties. Uniaxial compression tests and the incremental creep tests at different stress gradients were conducted on 10 red sandstone samples of the same specifications divided into five groups on an RLW-2000 triaxial servo rheometer in the laboratory. Relationships of the instantaneous strain and creep strain of red sandstone samples treated at high temperatures with the stress level were explored, and the creep properties and strength of the samples at different temperature gradients were investigated. In addition, the creep failure patterns and failure mechanism of the red sandstone samples were determined, and a creep constitutive model was established for the samples considering the effects of temperature. The conformity between test data and theoretical curves was discussed. Results show that as the stress increases, the instantaneous strain tends to decrease rapidly, slowly, then increase slowly; the cree... [more]

Keywords: acceptance, automation, demand-side management, Energy, smart grid, social license
Demand-side management (DSM) is increasingly needed for answering electricity flexibility needs in the upcoming transformation of energy systems. Use of automation leads to better efficiency, but its acceptance is problematic since it is linked with several issues, such as privacy or loss of control. Different approaches investigate what should be done for building community support for automation for the purpose of DSM, but it is only recently that literature has shown interest in the application of social license as a concept merging several issues traditionally treated separately. The social license concept emerged in the mining sector before being adopted for other problematic resources. It serves to identify different levels of community support for a project/company as well as various factors that influence it, such as economic and socio-political legitimacy and interactional trust. This paper investigates, through empirical evidence from eight case studies, what has been done in... [more]

Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors’ Passive Sensorless Control: A Review
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), review, sensorless control
Sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors is nowadays used in many industrial, home and traction applications, as it allows the presence of a position sensor to be avoided with benefits for the cost and reliability of the drive. An estimation of the rotor position is required to perform the field-oriented control (FOC), which is the most common control scheme used for this type of motor. Many algorithms have been developed for this purpose, which use different techniques to derive the rotor angle from the stator voltages and currents. Among them, the so-called passive methods have gained increasing interest as they do not introduce additional losses and current distortion associated instead with algorithms based on the injection of high-frequency signals. The aim of this paper is to present a review of the main passive sensorless methods proposed in the technical literature over the last few years, analyzing their main features and principles of operation. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: actively heated clothing, automatic control, smart clothing, thermal comfort
The article presents simple modeling and experimental verification of the power required for thermal comfort in electrically heated clothing. The clothing consists of a jumpsuit with embedded heating insets, controlled by a dedicated microprocessor system. The user is able to set heating power using a smartphone app. The experiments, conducted in a mobile freezing chamber, aimed at verification of the model of theoretical power (according to ISO 11079) required to maintain thermal comfort in ambient temperatures below 0 °C. Three participants were asked to adjust heating power to reach thermal comfort. The experiment revealed the required power to be only 40−60% of the theoretical one, meaning that the design of the electrically heating clothing relying solely on the theoretical models and standards would lead to oversizing of the heating system power. Further study indicated that the mean skin temperature by itself is not sufficient as an input to the algorithm for automatic maintaini... [more]

Fuzzy-Logic-Controlled Hybrid Active Filter for Matrix Converter Input Current Harmonics
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active harmonic filter, hybrid harmonic filter, matrix converter, passive filter
The proliferation of matrix converter interfaces coupled with traditional loads produces nonstandard and high-frequency harmonics in the range of (2 to 150) kHz in the power system. Although several research works have been conducted on passive and active filter solutions, most of these are low-frequency (below 2 kHz) solutions and are not effective under supraharmonic frequencies. An experimental study of a fuzzy-inference-system-controlled hybrid active power filter (HAPF) for the attenuation of higher frequency harmonics (above 8 kHz) is proposed. The compensational approach introduced is different from traditional approaches and the use of the fuzzy logic controller eliminates complexities involved in active filter designs. The proposed filter obtained a total harmonic distortion (THD) of 1.16% of the fundamental 50 Hz supply frequency. The performance of the proposed hybrid filter was compared with that of the proportional and integral (PI) controlled topology. The results obtaine... [more]

Reservoir Permeability Calculation under Flow Unit Control

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: liquidity unit index, low-permeability tight reservoir, permeability, pore structure
The No. 2 gas field in the X depression is a low-permeability tight reservoir with a complex lithology, pore structure, and strong physical heterogeneity, and the conventional core porosity−permeability regression method does not meet the requirements of fine evaluation in terms of the accuracy of permeability calculation. The flow unit method has great advantages in improving the accuracy of permeability calculation, but the FZI calculation method is too ideal and weakens the influence of the pore structure’s heterogeneity, and it needs to be verified that the FZI in the study area has a good correlation with the pore structure before it can be used. Therefore, based on analyzing the permeability control factors of low-permeability tight reservoirs, we analyze the correlation between three pore structure characterization parameters and the flow unit index FZI, which proves that the flow unit index FZI in this area can characterize the permeability difference within different flow unit... Keywords: adaptive robust control, characteristic model, HSPMSM, iron loss, sliding mode observer
It is widely recognized that the iron loss produced by motors at high speeds will directly affect the angle and size of the back electromotive force, and, therefore, it cannot be ignored. In this paper, a high-performance sensorless control algorithm is proposed for high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motors (HSPMSM), taking the iron loss into account. First, the resistance representing the core loss is precalculated by finite element analysis, and then a sliding mode observer with disturbance observation is designed to estimate the rotor position. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: classical control system, heat transfer fluid, parabolic trough collector, solar thermal power plant
Electricity generation from solar energy has become very desirable because it is abundantly available and eco-friendly. Mathematical modeling of various components of a Solar Thermal Power plant (STP) is warranted to predict the optimal and efficient operation of the plant. The efficiency and reliability of STPs are maximized based on different operating strategies. Opting for proper Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF), which is proposed in this paper, helps in reducing operating complexity and lowering procurement cost. The Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC) is the heart of STP, where proper focusing of PTC towards solar radiation is the primary task to maximize the outlet temperature of HTF. This maximum temperature plays a major factor due to diurnal solar radiation variation, and its disturbance nature, with the frequent startup and shutdown of STP, is avoided. In this paper, the PTC component is modeled from the first principle, and, with different HTF, the performance of PTC with constant an... [more]
