February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deadbeat observer, extended electromotive force, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, sensorless speed control
This paper proposes a novel and robust method of sensorless speed control using a deadbeat observer for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). The proposed sensorless speed control method uses a deadbeat observer to estimate the extended electromotive force (EEMF) in a rotational coordinate system. The estimated EEMF is used in the IPMSM velocity estimation algorithm. The deadbeat EEMF observer (DEEMFO) shows greater robustness compared to the reconstructor, which estimates the EEMF by simply recalculating the voltage equation. Unlike a reconstructor, DEEMFO has a feedback component, so it can compensate for errors due to uncertainty in motor parameters and errors due to parameter fluctuations that may occur during use. By simulating and experimenting with speed, load torque, and parameter fluctuations, it is proved to be more robust and precise than the reconstructor. The simulation is performed with MATLAB/Simulink, and the experiments were carried out using a DSP TM... [more]

Keywords: BELBIC, brain emotional learning, minimum energy control, Optimization, quadrotor, UAV
There is a strong trend in the development of control systems for multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where minimization of a control signal effort is conducted to extend the flight time. The aim of this article is to shed light on the problem of shaping control signals in terms of energy-optimal flights. The synthesis of a UAV autonomous control system with a brain emotional learning based intelligent controller (BELBIC) is presented. The BELBIC, based on information from the feedback loop of the reference signal tracking system, shows a high learning ability to develop an appropriate control action with low computational complexity. This extends the capabilities of commonly used fixed-value proportional−integral−derivative controllers in a simple but efficient manner. The problem of controller tuning is treated here as a problem of optimization of the cost function expressing control signal effort and maximum precision flight. The article introduces several techniques (bio-i... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), perturb-and-observe (P&O), solar power generation
Irradiance variability is one of the main challenges for using photovoltaic energy. This variability affects the operation of maximum power point trackers (MPPT) causing energy losses. The logic of the Perturb-and-Observe MPPT algorithm is particularly sensitive to quick irradiance changes. We quantified the existing relation between irradiance variations and efficiency loss of the logic of the Perturb-and-Observe MPPT algorithm, along with the sensitivity of the MPPT to its control parameters. If the algorithm parameters are not tuned properly, its efficiency will drop to nearly 2%. Irradiance variability causes a systematic energy loss of the algorithm that can only be quantified by ignoring the hardware components. With this, we aim to improve the energy yield estimation by providing an additional efficiency loss to be considered in the calculations.

Keywords: bipolar voltage gain, buck and boost operation, frequency controller, fully controlled devices, matrix converter, non-inverted and inverted operation, voltage and current surges
The development of single-phase symmetrical bipolar voltage gain matrix converters (MC) is growing rapidly as they find their application in power systems for dynamic restoration of line voltages, high voltage AC−DC converters, and variable frequency controllers for many industrial processes. However, the existing trend in matrix converter technology is a buck−boost operation that has inherently serious issues of high voltage and current surges or stresses. This is a big source of the high voltage and current rating of semiconductor switching devices. There is also a problem of high ripples both for voltage as well for current, requiring large size of filtering capacitors and inductors. The non-symmetrical control of the voltage gain increases the control complication. A large count of operating transistors is critical regarding their cost, size, and power conversion losses, as the space and cost required by their gate control circuits are much larger than the size and cost of the swit... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: non-linear/unbalanced load, novel harmonic compensation technique (NHCT), power quality (PQ), shunt active filter (SAF)
An excess non-linear and unbalanced load application increases the power quality (PQ) problem by injecting harmonic current. The avoidance of neutral current control creates additional PQ problems due to excess circulating current in modern 3φ4W applications. Therefore, this manuscript suggests improved  αβ transform-based voltage and current control approaches for both 3φ3W and 3φ4W shunt active filter (SAF) applications. In the proposed approach, a novel combined voltage and current (NCVC) control approach is presented for modern 3φ3W systems by using voltage and closed-loop current controllers. However, due to the absence of a neutral current, the NCVC is not sufficient for 3φ4W system application. Therefore, by considering the current reference parameter generated from the NCVC, a novel harmonic compensation technique (NHCT) is proposed with proper mathematical expressions for the 3φ4W application. To show the importance of NHCT over traditional P-Q-R control, the developed MA... [more]

Keywords: catalyst temperature, control strategy, deep reinforcement learning, PER-TD3 algorithm, PHEVs
PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) equipped with diesel engines have multiple model transitions in the driving cycle for their particular structure. The high frequency of start−stop of a diesel engine will increase fuel consumption and reduce the catalytic efficiency of SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) catalysts, which will increase cold start emissions. For comprehensive optimization of fuel consumption and emissions, an optimal control strategy of PHEVs that originated from the PER-TD3 algorithm based on DRL (deep reinforcement learning) is proposed in this paper. The priority of samples is assigned with greater sampling weight for high learning efficiency. Experimental results are compared with those of the DP (dynamic programming)-based strategy in HIL (hardware in loop) equipment. The engine fuel consumption and NOX emissions were 2.477 L/100 km and 0.2008 g/km, nearly 94.1% and 90.1% of those of the DP-based control strategy. By contrast, the fuel consumption and NOx of D... Keywords: horse racing algorithm (HRA), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), partial shading influence, photovoltaic (PV) power, PV power conversion system
This paper proposes a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method inspired by the horse racing game for standalone photovoltaic (PV) power systems, such that the highest PV power conversion efficiency is obtained. From the horse racing game rules, we develop the horse racing algorithm (HRA) with the qualifying stage and final ranking stage. The MPP can be searched even if there exist multiple local MPPs for the PV power system. Moreover, from the proposed horse racing algorithm, the calculation is reduced, so that the transient searching points are less than traditional methods, i.e., the transient oscillation is less during the MPPT control. Therefore, the HRA based MPPT method avoids local maximum power traps and achieves the MPP quickly even if considering partial shading influence and varying environment for PV panels. Evidence of the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed HRA method is exhibited by simulation results. These results are also compared with typical particle... [more]

Keywords: fault diagnosis, non-destructive inspection, the germination stage of damage, wind turbine blades
In recent years, wind turbines have shown a maximization trend. However, most of the wind turbine blades operate in areas with a relatively poor natural environment. The stability, safety, and reliability of blade operation are facing many challenges. Therefore, it is of great significance to monitor the structural health of wind turbine blades to avoid the failure of wind turbine outages and reduce maintenance costs. This paper reviews the commonly observed types of damage and damage detection methods of wind turbine blades. First of all, a comprehensive summary of the common embryonic damage, leading edge erosion, micro-cracking, fiber defects, and coating defects damage. Secondly, three fault diagnosis methods of wind turbine blades, including nondestructive testing (NDT), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and vibration signal-based fault diagnosis, are introduced. The working principles, advantages, disadvantages, and development status of nondestructive testing met... [more]

Keywords: distributed thyristor controlled series compensator, improved equilibrium optimization algorithm, optimal allocation, overload, reliability
In this paper, optimal allocation of a distributed thyristor-controlled series compensator (DTCSC) in a power system is presented to minimize overload, voltage deviations, and power losses while improving system reliability. The decision variable was defined as the optimal reactance of the DTCSC in the power system, which was determined using a new meta-heuristic algorithm named the improved equilibrium optimization algorithm (IEOA). A nonlinear inertia weight reduction strategy was used to improve the performance of traditional EOA in preventing premature convergence and facilitate a quick global optimum solution. The effect of system critical line outage was evaluated for each of the considered goals. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, IEOA capability was compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and manta ray foraging optimizer (MRFO) methods. Simulations were carried out considering different scenarios on 14- and 118-bus test systems. The results showe... [more]

Keywords: IMC-PID, model mismatch, nonlinear, OTSG, SLBFR
The simplification of simulation inevitably leads to model mismatch. In this paper, a once-through steam generator (OTSG) for a small lead bismuth fast reactor (SLBFR) is established and verified, and the OTSG model is simplified by three different methods. Based on the simplified OTSG model, IMC and IMC-PID controllers are designed to verify the sensitivity of the controller to model mismatch. The results show that the sensitivity of the controller to model mismatch is related to the filter parameters. With the increase in λ, the IMC-PID controller becomes insensitive to model mismatch caused by model linearization, non-minimum phase characteristics, noise and time delay. However, the adaptability to model mismatch sacrifices the sensitivity of the system. When λ is too large, the inertia of the controller is too large, resulting in the deterioration of the fast power regulation. Through the research of this paper, the time domain response approximation method is recommended for OTSG... [more]

Keywords: Design for Six Sigma, energy management, model-free-adaptive-control, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, robustness
This paper proposes a robust design approach based on the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), to promote the robustness of our previous model-free-adaptive-control-based (MFAC-based) energy management strategy (EMS) for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in real-time application. First, the multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA) is employed for a deterministic design of the MFAC-based EMS, and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is utilized to evaluate the sigma level of the strategy with the deterministic design results. Second, a DFSS framework is formulated to reinforce the robustness of the MFAC-based EMS, in which the velocity and the vehicle mass are considered external disturbances whilst the terminal state of charge (SOC) of the battery and the fuel consumption (FC) are conducted as responses. In addition, real-time SOC constraints are incorporated into Pontryagin’s minimum principle (PMP) to confine the fluctuation of battery SOC in MFAC-based EMS to make it closer to the solut... [more]

Keywords: continuous pulse width modulation, discontinuous pulse width modulation, dynamic losses, total harmonic distortion, voltage inverter
Continuous pulse width modulation (CPWM) and discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) strategies are used to control voltage source inverter operation. CPWM strategies allow for the reduction of total harmonic distortion values, while DPWM strategies provide a more effective reduction in inverter switching losses. The paper is devoted to the problem of improving the three-phase voltage source inverter efficiency by a controlled transition from CPWM to DPWM. The article proposes an adjustable discontinuous pulse width modulation (ADPWM) method, which means a transition from space vector PWM (refers to CPWM strategies) to DPWM in all inverter phases when the switches’ temperatures exceed the allowable value in at least one of the inverter phases. The method flowchart is presented and an algorithm for modifying the envelope curve within one sector is given. In order to test the ADPWM method a Simulink-model of a three-phase voltage source inverter and its control system were developed.... [more]

Keywords: ground control, monitoring systems, roof fall hazard
A roof fall hazard is still one of the major threats in the underground mining industry. Each such type of event always brings great risk to miners and causes serious interruptions in the process of rock excavation. In general, the possibility of roof fall hazard occurrence is directly related to the local geology, the presence of horizontal stresses as well as the type of excavation method and the efficacy of the utilized roof support. Due to the complexity of this process, it is important to continuously evaluate the roof fall risk, especially in long life-time places where a mining crew is often present. Within this article, a detailed review of the current methods of monitoring and evaluating roof fall risk was presented. Based on the extensive literature survey, different types of devices were described, and their advantages and disadvantages were pointed out. Furthermore, new trends in the area of roof fall risk monitoring were described and discussed.

Keywords: composite variable structure PI, improved MRAS, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor
In the speed control system of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) without a speed sensor, PI controllers using only a fixed set of parameters cannot achieve accurate tracking of the estimated speed in a wide speed domain and also suffer from step response overshoot. This paper proposes a Compound Variable Structure PI (CVSPI) controller to improve the system control performance. It can choose whether to include an integral term according to the size of the system deviation to speed up the response. It also introduces a Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) speed observer in the controller to estimate the speed and adaptively adjust the size of the anti-integration saturation gain to improve the dynamic response following performance and immunity of the system. A feed-forward link is added for a given input differential to achieve an accurate answer to time-varying inputs. As the linear compensation matrix of the conventional MRAS is a unit matrix, the speed can onl... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow control, heat transfer, jet, microchannel, vorticity dynamic
The heat transfer enhancement of a jet issued from the circular cylinder placed in a three-dimensional microchannel at low Reynolds numbers were studied systematically by using the numerical simulation. The effects of the jet on thermal efficiency were evaluated by varying injection ratios (I) and jet angles (θ). The physical mechanism of heat transfer was revealed through the analyses of vorticity dynamic and temperature field. The results showed that the thermal efficiency was proportional to the injection ratio at Re = 100 and 200. However, at Re = 300, the thermal efficiency did not increase monotonically with the injection ratio, and the local maximum value of heat transfer efficiency, slightly less than the highest thermal efficiency, appeared at I = 1.5. This was a result of the jet inducing the vortex generated on the cylinder to become unstable. Furthermore, the change of jet angle had a better effect on heat transfer performance compared to the increase in the injection ratio... [more]

This article presents a comparison of the course of a creep phenomenon in the control system of a bimorph actuator, in which control voltages were applied to both piezoelectric layers, with the course of the creep phenomenon in the control system of a unimorph actuator, in which a control voltage was applied to only one piezoelectric layer. The bimorph actuator was built from two layers of piezoelectric composite, macro fiber composite was applied, and a carrier layer made of epoxy laminate was used for production of printed circuit boards. A comparative analysis was carried out on the basis of 22 laboratory experiments in which the vision system was used to measure a displacement change of six points of the bimorph actuator structure. Based on the results of laboratory experiments, it was noted that the duration of a transient part is approximately the same in a system with a control voltage applied to one MFC patch as in a system with control voltages applied to two MFC patches. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: mixing enhancement, plasma flow control, pulsed energy deposition, transverse jet
Supersonic incoming flow has a large momentum, which makes it difficult for transverse jets to have a large penetration depth due to the strong compression of the incoming flow. This impacts the mixing efficiency of the jet in the supersonic combustor. This paper proposes a method to improve the mixing efficiency of a rectangular flow field model using pulsed energy deposition, which is verified numerically. In the simulations, the Navier−Stokes equations with an energy source are solved to simulate the effects of energy deposition with various distributions on the fuel mixture. The results show that the energy deposition increases the turbulent kinetic energy, which enlarges the scale of the flow vortex and improves the fuel mixing performance. The energy deposition is distributed upstream and significantly improves the mixing performance. Energy deposition can improve the penetration depth of fuel, which is more significant when the energy deposition is distributed downstream of the... [more]

Micro-grid solutions around the world rely on the operation of DC/DC power conversion systems. The most commonly used solution for these topologies is the use of a dual active bridge (DAB) converter. Increasing the efficiency and reliability of this system contributes to the improvement in the stability of the entire microgrid. This paper discussed an analytical method of energy efficiency and power loss estimation in a single phase dual active bridge (DAB) converter controlled with a single-phase shift (SPS) modulation scheme for microgrid system stability. The presented approach uses conduction and commutation losses of semiconductors and high frequency transformer. All parameters required for the calculation may be obtained from the manufacturers’ datasheets or can be based on a simple measurement. The approach was validated by the comparison of the estimated energy efficiency characteristics with the measured ones for a prototype of a 5 kW single phase DAB converter equipped with s... [more]

Keywords: Chinese Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR), control rod worth, McCARD, Monte Carlo, reactivity measurement, uncertainty
In the reactivity measurements of the China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) start-up tests, five independent control rods were moved to compensate for the reactivity insertion. Since the recorded control rod positions were converted to reactivity via S-curves (rod worth curves), any uncertainty in the S-curves can propagate to all reactivity measurements. In this work, we rigorously derived the uncertainty of the reactivity in terms of the statistical uncertainty of the S-curves with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Additionally, the average error of the control rod worth from the MC calculation was estimated from experiments and embedded into the uncertainty formulation. The formulation shows that the error of the reactivity is highly correlated to the changes in the control rod position during the reactivity measurements. McCARD MC simulations were then conducted for the CEFR start-up tests, and the calculated reactivity and uncertainty were compared with the measurements. The main err... [more]

A large coal pillar (usually more than 90 m) is generally left in place to ensure the stability of main roadway groups, due to its long service lifespan, which commonly also causes a significant loss of coal resources. The design of the width of the protective coal pillar and the control system of the surrounding rock are directly determined by the characteristics of the stress field and the damage mechanism under the influence of the mining activities. However, there are few studies on the effects of the partial-stress boosting and the direction deflection of the stress field on the failure evolution of the surrounding rock (especially in multi-seam mining). In this paper, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are used to investigate the direction evolution of the maximum principal stress in front of the working face with malposition distances between the upper and lower working faces during the influence of double coal seams mining. Furthermore, a large-scale numerical model... [more]

Keywords: adaptive frequency control, bidirectional DC–DC converter, digital control, optimal temperature control, zero-voltage switching
A new, optimal thermal-based adaptive frequency control (OTC) for a bidirectional DC−DC converter with full-range zero-voltage switching (ZVS) is presented in this paper. The proposed OTC achieves ZVS for a bidirectional DC−DC converter without any zero-crossing detection (ZCD) circuit or current sensor. In order to ensure a ZVS over a wide voltage and load range, the optimal switching frequency was adjusted by detecting and tracking the lowest junction temperature of the semiconductor device. Because the proposed OTC does not need a ZCD circuit, the complexity of the circuit and the susceptibility of the sampling noise are reduced. Additionally, compared with the expensive current sensor, the proposed method of temperature detection by the NTC thermistor decreases the cost. In addition, the proposed OTC does not need accurate circuit parameters and voltage or current sampling results, so the dependence on the parameters is reduced. Moreover, the temperature of the switch is directly m... [more]

Keywords: load frequency control, Model Predictive Control, Particle Swarm Optimization, wind turbines
With the high penetration of wind turbines, many issues need to be addressed in relation to load frequency control (LFC) to ensure the stable operation of power grids. The particle swarm optimization-based model predictive control (PSO-MPC) approach is presented to address this issue in the context of LFC with the participation of wind turbines. The classical MPC model was modified to incorporate the particle swarm optimization algorithm for the power generation model to regulate the system frequency. In addition to addressing the unpredictability of wind turbine generation, the presented PSO-MPC strategy not only addresses the randomness of wind turbine generation, but also reduces the computation burden of traditional MPC. The simulation results validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the PSO-MPC approach as compared with other state-of-the-art strategies.

Keywords: DQ control of propulsion motors, ice breaker, PWM inverter electric drive
The current world geopolitical state has driven significant interest in expanding influence in the polar regions. In order to develop new trade routes and defense of these areas, specialized ice-capable vessels are needed. Traditional propulsion technology utilized for these vessels has featured diesel and turbo electric drives with cycloconverter based technology used for speed regulation. Cycloconverter technology has the major disadvantage of characteristic output voltage waveforms that are very non-sinusoidal which induce harmonic rich currents with their resulting negative effects on total power factor and efficiency. There is also the potential to induce harmonic currents that may increase heat production in power cables, stressing insulation and reducing overall component life. Furthermore, sensitive loads such as control system power supplies may also be affected. The output waveform of a PWM drive has harmonic content that is both less severe, and more easily analyzed with cur... [more]
