Cascade-Free Modulated Predictive Direct Speed Control of PMSM Drives
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascade-free, direct speed control, fixed switching frequency, model predictive control (MPC), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)
Conventional predictive control for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) contains dual speed and current loops, and has a complex structure and multiple parameters to be tuned. Conventional predictive direct speed control (PDSC) exhibits an unsatisfactory steady-state performance. To tackle these issues, this paper presents a cascade-free modulated PDSC (MPDSC) scheme for PMSM drives. First, a speed predictive model is built, where a second-order sliding mode observer is employed to quickly and robustly estimate the load torque. Then, a dual objective cost function with speed and stator current tracking is designed, which improves the system’s steady-state performance. Furthermore, the analytical solution of the constrained optimal voltage vector is derived and it is synthesized by space vector modulation, resulting in a fixed switching frequency. Experimental results show that the proposed MPDSC has stronger robustness, and lower torque ripples and stator current harmonics comp... [more]

Improving Efficiency of Electric Energy System and Grid Operating Modes: Review of Optimization Techniques
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control over operating parameters, energy system, optimization techniques, power plant, power supply system, target function
Continuously growing tariff rates for energy carriers required to generate electrical and thermal energy bring about the need to search for alternatives. Such alternatives are intended for the reduction in the electricity and heat net costs as well as the expenses for the operation and maintenance of system elements and damage from power outages or deteriorated power quality. A way to reduce electricity and heat costs is the introduction of distributed energy resources capable of operating on both conventional (natural gas) and alternative (solar and wind energy, biomass, etc.) fuels. The problem of reducing electricity and, in some cases, heat costs are solved by applying mathematical optimization techniques adapted to a specific element or system of the industry in question. When it comes to power industry facilities, optimization, as a rule, includes reducing active power losses by controlling the system mode or specific power unit parameters; planning generating equipment operating... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aromatic isomer, controlling factor(s), isotope compositions, oil, oilfield, source input, Tarim Basin, thermal maturity
The present study aimed firstly to use a set of crude oil samples and a dataset to provide new evidence for source input contribution in selected aromatic isomers for discrimination of oils from three oilfields from Tarim Basin and identify the key factor (s) controlling the isotope composition. Thus, the present research showed that the δ13C values of alkylnaphthalenes and alkylphenanthrenes plotted against P/DBT and Ga/C30H ratios is a reliable and convenient tool for discrimination of organic matter variations in different oilfields. More importantly, molecular ratios and different diagram plots revealed that the selected oil samples would be derived from a mixing of indigenous organic matter from the terrestrial (in Kuqa area) and marine (in the cratonic area) depositional environments prior the apparition of the Yakela Faulted Uplift. Thus, Daolaoba, Yakela, and Tahe oils were made up of organic materials from both marine and terrestrial sources. Furthermore, marine organic matter... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ADC, Merging Unit, Phasor Measurement Unit, PPS, sampled values, synchronization, synchrophasor, UTC time scale
This article describes two methods and circuits for generation of a signal synchronized to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time scale. The signal is used as a sampling clock for a synchrophasor and Sampled Values generation. Both methods use a PPS (Pulse Per Second) pulse as a synchronization signal. In the first method, the synchronization procedure is implemented entirely in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. The second method uses a microcontroller and a Temperature Compensated Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator (TCVCXO). The common feature of the presented methods is that they are cost effective and use a minimal number of components. This paper presents the implementation details of both methods as well as the measurement results, which show that the accuracy of the synchronized signals in both procedures makes them suitable for use in synchrophasors and sampled values measurements.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: impinging SW, Mie scattering, Q-DC plasma, shock train control, SWBLI
The problem considered in this work is shock wave (SW) positioning control in shock-dominated flows. Experiments are conducted to investigate the triggering effect of patterned near-surface electrical discharges on SW reflection from plane walls. In the wind tunnel, M=4, P0 = 4 bar, a solid wedge SW generator is mounted on the upper wall. Q-DC filamentary electrical discharges were arranged on the opposite wall, so that the SW from the wedge impinged on the plasma filaments that are arranged flow-wise in either a row of three or a single central filament. Within the supersonic flow, narrow subsonic areas are actuated by electrical discharge thermal deposition, resulting in pressure redistribution, which, in turn, relocates the reflection of impinging SW to a predefined position. Mie scattering, schlieren imaging, and wall pressure measurements are used to explore the details of plasma-SW interaction. Using Mie scattering, the three-dimensional shape of the SW structure is mapped both b... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: experimental testing, fluid power, hydraulics, numerical simulation, power take-off, Wave Energy, wave power extraction algorithm
Wave energy converters are still a maturing technology and, as such, still face a series of challenges before they can compete with already-established technologies. One of these challenges is optimising the amount of energy extracted from the waves and delivered to the power grid. This study investigates the possibility of increasing the energy output of the existing hydraulic power take-off system of a wave energy converter made by Floating Power Plant during small-scale testing of their hybrid wind and wave energy platform. This system consists of a floater arm that rotates an axle when displaced by the waves. When the axle rotates, two hydraulic cylinders are actuated, displacing oil to run through a hydraulic motor driving an electric generator. The energy extraction is controlled by implementing a control algorithm on a series of on/off valves, which decouples the two hydraulic cylinders driving the hydraulic motor, and by varying the applied torque from the generator to match th... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional power flow, DC-AC power converters, power control, power conversion, PR controller, proportional-resonant controller, Voltage-source converters
Proposed in this article is bidirectional real and reactive power control of a three-phase grid-connected inverter under unbalanced grid conditions using a proportional-resonance controller. Different unbalanced grid conditions have been studied, such as unbalanced three-phase load and unbalanced grid impedance. These unbalanced scenarios generate unbalanced grid currents and unbalanced point-of-common-coupling (PCC) voltages, causing large oscillations in both real and reactive power transferred to the grid. The purposes of the suggested technique are to balance the grid currents and point-of-common-coupling voltages as well as control the power injected into the grid. As a result, balanced PCC voltages are guaranteed, the oscillation in real and reactive power is reduced, and power control is achieved. Secondary Voltage Collaborative Control of Distributed Energy System via Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: attentional mechanism, coordination optimization, deep reinforcement learning, distributed energy, nodal voltage
In this paper, a new voltage cooperative control strategy for a distributed power generation system is proposed based on the multi-agent advantage actor-critic (MA2C) algorithm, which realizes flexible management and effective control of distributed energy. The attentional actor-critic message processor (AACMP) is extended into the MA2C method to select the important messages from all communication messages adaptively and process important messages efficiently. The cooperative control strategy trained by centralized training and decentralized execution frame will take over the responsibility of the secondary control level for voltage restoration in a distributed manner. The introduction of the attention mechanism reduces the amount of information exchanged and the requirements of the communication network. Finally, a distributed system with six energy nodes is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: NeuroFuzzy, real twisting, sliding mode control, super twisting, uniform robust exact differentiator, wind energy conversion system
A robust control algorithm is always needed to harvest maximum power from a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) by operating it consistently at a Maximum Power Point (MPP) in the presence of wind speed variations. In this work, a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control algorithm is designed via Conventional Sliding Mode Control (CSMC), the Super Twisting Algorithm (STA), and the Real Twisting Algorithm (RTA) and is applied to a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG)-based WECS. CSMC is model-based whereas the STA and RTA are model-free controllers. In practice, the unavailability of nonlinear terms and aerodynamic forces deteriorates the performance of these controllers. Thus, an offline NeuroFuzzy algorithm is incorporated to estimate the nonlinear drift and control input channel to improve the robustness of these algorithms. In addition, the generator shaft speed and its missing derivative is recovered via a Uniform Robust Exact Differentiator (URED). In order to carry ou... [more]

Keywords: FEM modeling, independently-controlled stator coils, induction machine, maximum efficiency operation, maximum torque per ampere operation, phase-changing, pole-changing
Pole-phase changing induction machines (IMs) offer the capability to extend the torque-speed envelope compared to their fixed pole-phase counterparts. Dynamic pole-changing can achieve higher torque levels at lower speeds, utilizing higher pole numbers, and extended flux-weakening range with lower pole-number operations. Safety and critical applications employ fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS) to increase reliability and availability in the event of a failure of critical components. Process facilities may employ these technologies to cut down on production losses caused by equipment failures that occur on an irregular or unscheduled basis. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ANN, back propagation algorithm, power quality, total harmonic distortion, wind energy conversion system
Green energy sources are implemented for the generation of power due to their substantial advantages. Wind generation is the best among renewable options for power generation. Generally, the wind system is directly connected with the power network for supplying power. In direct connection, there is an issue of managing power quality (PQ) concerns such as voltage sag, swells, flickers, harmonics, etc. In order to enhance the PQ in a power network with a wind energy conversion system (WECS), peripheral compensation is needed. In this paper, we highlight a novel control technique to improve the PQ in WECS by adopting an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM). In our proposed approach, an online learning-based ANN Back Propagation (BP) model is used to generate the gate pulses of the DSTATCOM, which mitigate the harmonics at the grid side. An Optimized Fuzzy Based Control Solution for Frequency Oscillation Reduction in Electric Grids
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded controller, distributed generation, fuzzy PD-PI controller, grasshopper optimization algorithm
The demand for uninterruptible electricity supply is increasing, and the power engineering sector has started researching alternative solutions. Distributed generation (DG) dissemination into the electric grid to cope with the accelerating demand for electricity is taken into consideration. However, its integration with the traditional grid is a key task as sudden changes in load and their fickle nature cause the frequency to deviate from its adjusted range and affect the grid’s reliability. Moreover, the increased use of DG will significantly impact power system frequency response, posing a new challenge to the traditional power system frequency framework. Therefore, maintaining the frequency within the nominal range can improve its reliability. This deviation should be removed within a few seconds to keep the system’s frequency stable so that supply and demand are balanced. Optimizing the combustion control concepts on a pellet stove with very low heat output is time-consuming and costly. In order to shorten the required laboratory test time, a 0-D transient tool was developed within the ERA-NET project “LowEmi-MicroStove”, which simulates a 4 kW pellet stove with staged combustion and heat transfer. This approach was chosen in order to greatly simplify the description of the combustion processes and so reduce the computational complexity and simulation time. The combustion of a bed of pellets is modeled as a superposition of the combustion cycles of individual pellets, assuming no interactions between pellets. A test setup was developed and used to determine the ignition and burning cycle of individual pellets. The description of the CO emissions behavior is based upon an empirically grounded relation which is in turn based on the air/fuel ratio and the combustion chamber temperature. Keywords: computation time, DC/AC converters, real-time control platforms, total harmonic distortion, voltage and current controllers
In the control of DC/AC switched power converters (SPC), one of the most important aspects to be considered is the selection of the real-time control platform. The real-time control platform must be able to meet the high performance efficiency and regulation requirements of the DC/AC SPC, as these typically operate at switching frequencies in the order of kHz to MHz. For this reason, the hardware characteristics of the ADC and PWM, and the processing capacity of the real-time control platform are of vital importance when implementing advanced digital controllers that maintain voltage and current levels within regulatory standards. In this context, we aimed to perform a comparative study of the computation times of different real-time control platforms when implementing different control strategies for DC/AC switched power converters. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active filters, bidirectional power flow, DC-AC power converters, parameter extraction, power control, power conversion, voltage-source converters
Presented in this paper is a method of bidirectional real and reactive power control of a three-phase grid-connected inverter under unbalanced grid situations. Unbalanced three-phase load and unbalanced grid impedance are illustrations of unbalanced grid issues that have been investigated. As a result, both grid currents and point-of-common-coupling (PCC) voltages will be unbalanced. The real and reactive power that is delivered to the grid oscillates by a significant amount in these unbalanced conditions. A time-domain symmetrical components extraction approach is used to calculate the inverter’s reference currents from the negative- and zero-sequence components of the measured currents. The suggested approach corrects unbalanced grid currents and unbalanced PCC voltages, and provides the desired real and reactive power to the grid when unbalanced situations exist. As a consequence, power oscillations will be eliminated, and power control will be possible. The suggested method’s perfo... [more]
