Convective Heat Transfer Enhancement through Laser-Etched Heat Sinks: Elliptic Scale-Roughened and Cones Patterns
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: convective heat transfer, electronics cooling, heat sink, heat transfer enhancement, laser etching, microstructured surface
The efficient dissipation of localized heat flux by convection is a key request in several engineering applications, especially electronic ones. The recent advancements in manufacturing processes are unlocking the design and industrialization of heat exchangers with unprecedented geometric characteristics and, thus, performance. In this work, laser etching manufacturing technique is employed to develop metal surfaces with designed microstructured surface patterns. Such precise control of the solid-air interface (artificial roughness) allows to manufacture metal heat sinks with enhanced thermal transmittance with respect to traditional flat surfaces. Here, the thermal performance of these laser-etched devices is experimentally assessed by means of a wind tunnel in a fully turbulent regime. At the highest Reynolds number tested in the experiments ( R e L ≈ 16 , 500 ), elliptic scale-roughened surfaces show thermal transmittances improved by up to 81% with respect to heat sinks wi... A New Network for Particle Filtering of Multivariable Nonlinear Objects †
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multidimensional systems, nonlinear plants, particle filter, power system grid, sequential importance resampling, state estimation
In this paper, a new object in the form of a theoretical network is presented, which is useful as a benchmark for particle filtering algorithms designed for multivariable nonlinear systems (potentially linear, nonlinear, and even semi-Markovian jump system). The main goal of the paper is to propose an object that potentially can have similar to the power system grid properties, but with the number of state variables reduced twice (only one state variable for each node, while there are two in the case of power systems). Transition and measurement functions are proposed in the paper, and two types of transition functions are considered: dependent on one or many state variables. In addition, 10 types of measurements are proposed both for branch and nodal cases. The experiments are performed for 14 different, four-dimensional systems. Plants are both linear and highly nonlinear. The results include information about the state estimation quality (based on the mean squared error indicator) a... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: harvesting system, hog fuel, olive groves, pruning, pruning supply chain, stationary chipper
Pruning residues could represent an important biomass resources for energy production. Only in Italy it has been estimated that an annual quantity of biomass of over 2600 kt of dry matter could be obtained from olive residues. Several machines developed for pruning harvesting are available in the market, most of which are tractor-driven, while limited knowledge is available on performance, quality of work and costs of harvesting logistics based on stationary chippers. The aim of the present paper is to analyze machine performance of a forestry stationary chipper applied to pruning harvesting for what concerns work productivity, quality of the comminuted product and harvesting operating costs. This system is actually applied by Fiusis Company, an Italian enterprise which manages a biomass power plant exclusively powered by olive trees’ pruning residues, and it has never been analyzed in literature. Bus Voltage Control of DC Distribution Network Based on Sliding Mode Active Disturbance Rejection Control Strategy
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC distribution network, disturbance compensation, LESO, sliding mode control, unit power rectifier
The DC distribution network has more advantages in power transmission, grid connection of distributed energy, and reliability of power supply when compared with AC distribution network, but there are still many problems in the development of DC distribution network. DC bus voltage control is one of the hot issues in the research of DC distribution network. To solve this problem, in this paper, a new type of sliding mode active disturbance rejection control (SMADRC) controller for AC/DC converters is designed and applied to the voltage outer loop. The linear extended state observer (LESO) can observe the state variables and the total disturbance of the system. The SMADRC is composed of a sliding mode controller, LESO, and disturbance compensator, which can compensate the total disturbance observed by LESO properly. Therefore, it improves the dynamic. At the same time, it can also reduce the system jitter that is caused by sliding mode controller. The state variables that are observed by... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery systems, equivalent circuit model, power quality
The supply of pulsed power loads is considered a key driver for the integration of energy storage systems (ESSs) with warship power systems. ESSs are identified as a means to offer fast response dynamics capable of driving pulsed loads for sustained periods. This paper contributes a novel investigation into the performance of a Nickel Manganese Cobalt based lithium-ion battery system to supply laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) loads for future warship combat power systems using time-domain simulation methodology. The approach describes a second order Thévenin equivalent circuit battery model validated against a battery module of a type used in commercial marine ESS. The ability of the battery system to power LDEW loads peaking at 2 MW for up to periods of four minutes were simulated for beginning of life (BoL) and degraded conditions. The repeatability of the pulsed power supply with ESS is also reported. Simulation results show that Quality of Power Supply (QPS) is maintained within... [more]

The Impacts of a Building’s Thermal Mass on the Cooling Load of a Radiant System under Various Typical Climates
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy conservation, energy simulation, radiant cooling system, thermal inertia, thermal mass
Cooling load is difficult to predict for a radiant system, because the interaction between a building’s thermal mass and radiation heat gain has not been well defined in a zone with a cooling surface. This study aims to reveal the effect of thermal mass in an external wall on the transmission load in a space with an active cooling surface. We investigated the thermal performances in a typical office building under various weather conditions by dynamic simulation with Energy-Plus. It was found that the thermal mass in the inside concrete layer had positives in terms of indoor temperature performance and energy conservation. The peak cooling load of the hydronic system decreases 28% in the proper operating state, taking into account the effect of the thermal mass in an external wall. Compared to the performances in zones with equivalent convective air systems (CASs), the peak cooling load and the accumulated load of the combined system (radiant system coupled by fresh air system) are hig... Assessment of Methods for the Real-Time Simulation of Electronic and Thermal Circuits
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ARM processors, benchmark problems, electronic circuits, real-time simulation, thermal circuits, time–domain circuit simulation
Time−domain simulation of electronic and thermal circuits is required by a large array of applications, such as the design and optimization of electric vehicle powertrain components. While efficient execution is always a desirable feature of simulation codes, in certain cases like System-in-the-Loop setups, real-time performance is demanded. Whether real-time code execution can be achieved or not in a particular case depends on a series of factors, which include the mathematical formulation of the equations that govern the system dynamics, the techniques used in code implementation, and the capabilities of the hardware architecture on which the simulation is run. In this work, we present an evaluation framework of numerical methods for the simulation of electronic and thermal circuits from the point of view of their ability to deliver real-time performance. The methods were compared using a set of nontrivial benchmark problems and relevant error metrics. The computational efficiency of... [more]

Life Cycle Environmental Costs of Buildings
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building, environmental costs, green GDP, China, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis
Energy consumption and pollutant emissions from buildings have caused serious impacts on the environment. Currently, research on building environmental costs is quite insufficient. Based on life cycle inventory of building materials, fossil fuel and electricity power, a calculating model for environmental costs during different stages is presented. A single-objective optimization model is generated by converting environmental impact into environmental cost, with the same unit with direct cost. Two residential buildings, one located in Beijing and another in Xiamen, China, are taken as the case studies and analyzed to test the proposed model. Moreover, data uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of key parameters, including the discount rate and the unit virtual abatement costs of pollutants, are also conducted. The analysis results show that the environmental cost accounts for about 16% of direct cost. The environmental degradation cost accounts for about 70% of the total environmental c... [more]

Effective Permeability of Multi Air Gap Ferrite Core 3-Phase Medium Frequency Transformer in Isolated DC-DC Converters
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: average air gap length, dc-dc power converters, gapped magnetic core, magnetic permeability, magnetizing inductance, medium frequency transformer
The magnetizing inductance of the medium frequency transformer (MFT) impacts the performance of the isolated dc-dc power converters. The ferrite material is considered for high power transformers but it requires an assembly of type “I” cores resulting in a multi air gap structure of the magnetic core. The authors claim that the multiple air gaps are randomly distributed and that the average air gap length is unpredictable at the industrial design stage. As a consequence, the required effective magnetic permeability and the magnetizing inductance are difficult to achieve within reasonable error margins. This article presents the measurements of the equivalent B(H) and the equivalent magnetic permeability of two three-phase MFT prototypes. The measured equivalent B(H) is used in an FEM simulation and compared against a no load test of a 100 kW isolated dc-dc converter showing a good fit within a 10% error. Further analysis leads to the demonstration that the equivalent magnetic permeabil... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: adaptiveness, bioenergy, Denmark, Finland, Germany, policy mix, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, resilience, robustness, solar power, wind energy
Denmark, Germany, and Finland are countries that have emerged as technology leaders in key renewable energy fields—wind energy, solar power, and bioenergy. In this article, we dig into the policy trajectories of these countries and concentrate particularly on a phenomenon that is common for them all—the long-term commitment to promoting particular renewable energy (RE) technologies. Analyzing commitment, its causes and its consequences, can be considered important, as earlier findings show that long-term, consistent policy signals are a key for policy success. In this article, we point out that this ‘sticking’ to a RE technology has emerged and manifested in multiple ways in the case countries. Examples include relying on existing cultural capacities when navigating energy policy direction, strategically promoting scaling of technology markets to root new energy practices in society and developing energy policies as an extension of existing socio-technical structures. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 and N2 adsorption, fractal characteristics, Heterogeneity, longmaxi shale, micropores and mesopores, multifractal
To better understand the variability and heterogeneity of pore size distributions (PSDs) in the Longmaxi Shale, twelve shale samples were collected from the Xiaoxi and Fendong section, Sichuan Province, South China. Multifractal analysis was employed to study PSDs of mesopores (2−50 nm) and micropores (<2 nm) based on low-pressure N2/CO2 adsorption (LP-N2/CO2GA). The results show that the PSDs of mesopores and micropores exhibit a multifractal behavior. The multifractal parameters can be divided into the parameters of heterogeneity (D−10−D10, D0−D10 and D−10−D0) and the parameters of singularity (D1 and H). For both the mesopores and micropores, decreasing the singularity of the pore size distribution contributes to larger heterogeneous parameters. However, micropores and mesopores also vary widely in terms of the pore heterogeneity and its controlling factors. Shale with a higher total organic carbon (TOC) content may have a larger volume of micropores and more heterogeneous mesopo... [more]

Prediction of Performance Variation Caused by Manufacturing Tolerances and Defects in Gas Diffusion Electrodes of Phosphoric Acid (PA)−Doped Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-Based High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), mathematical model, phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based proton exchange membranes, prediction of performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects, six-sigma product specification
The automated process of coating catalyst layers on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells results inherently into a number of defects. These defects consist of agglomerates in which the platinum sites cannot be accessed by phosphoric acid and which are the consequence of an inconsistent coating, uncoated regions, scratches, knots, blemishes, folds, or attached fine particles—all ranging from μm to mm size. These electrochemically inactive spots cause a reduction of the effective catalyst area per unit volume (cm2/cm3) and determine a drop in fuel cell performance. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented that predicts performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects of the GDE and which enables the creation of a six-sigma product specification for Advent phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Load Profile Segmentation for Effective Residential Demand Response Program: Method and Evidence from Korean Pilot Study
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: data analysis, demand response (DR), load profile clustering, k-means, targeting of customer
Due to the heterogeneity of demand response behaviors among customers, selecting a suitable segment is one of the key factors for the efficient and stable operation of the demand response (DR) program. Most utilities recognize the importance of targeted enrollment. Customer targeting in DR programs is normally implemented based on customer segmentation. Residential customers are characterized by low electricity consumption and large variability across times of consumption. These factors are considered to be the primary challenges in household load profile segmentation. Existing customer segmentation methods have limitations in reflecting daily consumption of electricity, peak demand timings, and load patterns. In this study, we propose a new clustering method to segment customers more effectively in residential demand response programs and thereby, identify suitable customer targets in DR. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical model, finite element analysis, magnetic gear, nutation, permanent magnet
This paper presents an inner-type of magnetic gears for non-contact driving, based on the nutation gearing principle. An improved three-dimensional analytical model, based on the magnetic vector potential of rectangular permanent magnets, via the equivalent current, is deduced for the proposed nutation magnetic gears. The transformation of coordinates is applied for a global field solution. The analytical model and the finite element model have analyzed the output torque of the nutation magnetic drive, respectively. The results show that the values calculated by the two models are consistent. The proposed analytical model can provide a reference for the design and optimization of nutation magnetic gears and other permanent magnetic mechanisms with rectangular magnets.

Keywords: absence of failure data, heavy oil gathering pipelines, information diffusion theory, safety evaluation, variable fuzzy set theory
At present, the number of oil and gas gathering and transportation pipelines is numerous, and leakage accidents occur frequently. Each year, due to pipeline failure, there are immeasurable consequences for people and the environment around the affected pipelines. In order to reduce the risk of leakage accidents in heavy oil gathering pipelines and prevent the occurrence of major spills, it is of great significance to carry out safety assessments of them. Keywords: acidification, micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), mixed siliciclastic–carbonate rocks, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), pore structure, T2 cutoff
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used widely to characterize petrophysical properties of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks but rarely to study those of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. In this study, 13 different core samples and eight acidified core samples selected amongst those 13 from the Paleogene Shahejie Formation in Southern Laizhouwan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), and NMR. SEM and CT results revealed a complex pore structure diversity, pore distribution, and pore-throat connectivity in mixed reservoirs. Sixteen groups of NMR experiments addressed changes in these properties and permeabilities of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks before and after acidification to determine its effects on such reservoirs. NMR experimental results showed no “diffusion coupling” effect in mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. Distributions of NMR T2 cutoff values (T2C) are closely related to the pore structure... [more]

Keywords: carbon dioxide phase transition, crack propagation, dynamic response, gathering energy effect, rock mass excavation
Carbon dioxide phase transition fracturing has been widely used in rock mass excavation under complex environments, and its special rock breaking process shows obvious gathering energy effect. In this paper, the gathering energy effect of this technology is considered and then the impact reduction coefficient is defined and determined. Eventually, a combined method of field tests and numerical simulations is used to study the crack propagation characteristics and spatiotemporal changes of dynamic response. The results show that the cracks grow more and more slowly as time goes by; the peak displacement and peak point velocity in the primary impact direction are both greater than those in the secondary impact direction. The peak point velocity in different directions decreases as the distance from borehole increases and it decays more and more slowly. With the increase of distance from the borehole, the peak effective stress in the primary impact direction constantly decreases. However,... [more]
