Subject: Environment
Keywords: classroom, CO2 concentrations, indoor air quality, preheating, stratification, thermal comfort
Displacement ventilation is a proven method of providing conditioned air to enclosed spaces with the aim to deliver good air quality and thermal comfort while reducing the amount of energy required to operate the system. Until now, the practical applications of displacement ventilation have been exclusive to providing ventilation and cooling to large open spaces with high ceilings. The provision of heating through displacement ventilation has traditionally been discouraged, out of concern that warm air supplied at the floor level would rise straight to the ceiling level without providing heat to the occupied space. Hence, a separate heating system is regularly integrated with the displacement ventilation in cold climates, increasing the cost and energy use of the system. This paper goes beyond the common industry practice and explores the possibility of using displacement ventilation to provide heating without any additional heating system. It reports on experimental investigations con... [more]
A Novel Procedure for Coupled Simulation of Thermal and Fluid Flow Models for Rough-Walled Rock Fractures
Feng Xiong, Chu Zhu, Qinghui Jiang
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aperture, coupled hydrothermal model, joint roughness coefficient, mesh size, rough fracture
An enhanced geothermal system (EGS) proposed on the basis of hot dry rock mining technology has become a focus of geothermal research. A novel procedure for coupled simulation of thermal and fluid flow models (NPCTF) is derived to model heat flow and thermal energy absorption characteristics in rough-walled rock fractures. The perturbation method is used to calculate the pressure and flow rate in connected wedge-shaped cells at pore-scale, and an approximate analytical solution of temperature distribution in wedge-shaped cells is obtained, which assumes an identical temperature between the fluid and fracture wall. The proposed method is verified in Barton and Choubey (1985) fracture profiles. The maximum deviation of temperature distribution between the proposed method and heat flow simulation is 13.2% and flow transmissivity is 1.2%, which indicates the results from the proposed method are in close agreement with those obtained from simulations. By applying the proposed NPCTF to real... [more]
Visualization of Chemical Heavy Oil EOR Displacement Mechanisms in a 2D System

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2D model tests, chemical flooding, chemical flooding, heavy oil, heavy oil recovery mechanisms, Hele-Shaw cell
This study aims to develop a visual understanding of the macro-displacement mechanisms associated with heavy oil recovery by water and chemical flooding in a 2D system. The sweep efficiency improvements by water, surfactant, polymer, and surfactant-polymer (SP) were evaluated in a Hele-Shaw cell with no local pore-level trapping of fluids. The results demonstrated that displacement performance is highly correlated to the mobility ratio between the fluids. Surfactant and water reached similar oil recovery values at similar mobility ratios; however, they exhibited different flow patterns in the 2D system—reductions in IFT can lead to the formation of emulsions and alter flow pathways, but in the absence of porous media these do not lead to significant improvements in oil recovery. Polymer flooding displayed a more stable front and a higher reduction in viscous fingering. Oil recovery by SP was achieved mostly by polymer rather than due to the effect of the surfactant. The surfactant in t... [more]
CFD Analysis of the Performance of a Double Decker Turbine for Wave Energy Conversion

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial turbine, double decker turbine, oscillating water column, twin turbines configuration, Wave Energy
The Double Decker Turbine (DDT) is a recent design introduced for oscillating water column (OWC) devices. Its major contribution is the combination of two typical solutions in just one prototype: a self-rectifying performance, to deal with the bidirectional flow, and the twin-turbine concept, allowing the use of unidirectional turbines. This is achieved by a set of two concentric turbines, called external and internal turbines (ExT—InT). In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical model is developed to study in detail the performance of a DDT, where geometrical components for both turbines have been taken from previous works of the authors. The ANSYS-Fluent code was first executed by means of a URANS simulation with a realizable k-ε turbulence model to obtain the performance curve of the turbine under steady conditions. Results obtained reveal its potential with respect to other solutions in the current state-of-the-art of OWC solutions for Wave Energy Conversion. Follow... [more]
Comparison of Cycle Reduction and Model Reduction Strategies for the Design Optimization of Hybrid Powertrains on Driving Cycles
Adham Kaloun, Stéphane Brisset, Maxime Ogier, Mariam Ahmed, Robin Vincent
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cycle reduction, electric machines, hybrid electric vehicle, Model Reduction, optimal control, optimal design, Plant/Controller optimization
Decision-making is a crucial and difficult step in the design process of complex systems such as the hybrid powertrain. Finding an optimal solution requires the system feedback. This can be, depending on the granularity of the models at the component level, highly time-consuming. This is even more true when the system’s performance is determined by its control. In fact, various possibilities can be selected to deliver the required torque to the wheels during a driving cycle. In this work, two different design strategies are proposed to minimize the fuel consumption and the cost of the hybrid powertrain. Both strategies adopt the iterative framework which allows for the separation of the powertrain design problem and its control while leading to system optimality. The first approach is based on model reduction, while the second approach relies on improved cycle reduction techniques. They are then applied to a parallel hybrid vehicle case study, leading to important cost reduction in rea... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adiabatic liquid air energy storage system, cold storage, cryogenic technologies, exergy analysis, Linde–Hampson cycle
Efficiently storing energy on a large scale poses a major challenge and one that is growing in importance with the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix. The only options at present are either pumped hydro or compressed air storage. One novel alternative is to store energy using liquid air, but this technology is not yet fully mature and requires substantial research and development, including in-depth energy and exergy analysis. This paper presents an exergy analysis of the Adiabatic Liquid Air Energy Storage (A-LAES) system based on the Linde−Hampson cycle. The exergy analysis was carried out for four cases with different parameters, in particular the discharge pressure of the air at the inlet of the turbine (20, 40, 100, 150 bar). The results of the analysis show that the greatest exergy destruction can be observed in the air evaporator and in the Joule−Thompson valve. In the case of air evaporator, the destruction of exergy is greatest for the lowest discharge pressure,... [more]

Bartosz Gil, Anna Szczepanowska, Sabina Rosiek
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroolefins, low GWP, refrigerants
In this work, which is related to the current European Parliament Regulation on restrictions affecting refrigeration, four new three-component refrigerants have been proposed; all were created using low Global Warming Potential(GWP) synthetic and natural refrigerants. The considered mixtures consisted of R32, R41, R161, R152a, R1234ze (E), R1234yf, R1243zf, and RE170. These mixtures were theoretically tested with a 10% step in mass fraction using a triangular design. The analysis covered two theoretical cooling cycles at evaporating temperatures of 0 and −30 °C, and a 30 °C constant condensing temperature. The final stage of the work was the determination of the best mixture compositions by thermodynamic and operational parameters. R1234yf−R152a−RE170 with a weight share of 0.1/0.5/0.4 was determined to be the optimal mixture for potentially replacing the existing refrigerants.

Keywords: deep transfer learning, fault diagnosis, rolling bearings, unbalance samples
Fault diagnosis under the condition of data sets or samples with only a few fault labels has become a hot spot in the field of machinery fault diagnosis. To solve this problem, a fault diagnosis method based on deep transfer learning is proposed. Firstly, the discriminator of the generative adversarial network (GAN) is improved by enhancing its sparsity, and then adopts the adversarial mechanism to continuously optimize the recognition ability of the discriminator; finally, the parameter transfer learning (PTL) method is applied to transfer the trained discriminator to target domain to solve the fault diagnosis problem with only a small number of label samples. Experimental results show that this method has good fault diagnosis performance.
Collapse of n Point Vortices, Formation of the Vortex Sheets and Transport of Passive Markers
Henryk Kudela
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: collapse, passive markers transport, point vortex, vortex sheets
In this paper, the motion of the n-vortex system as it collapses to a point in finite time is studied. The motion of vortices is described by the set of ordinary differential equations that we are able to solve analytically. The explicit formula for the solution demands the initial location of collapsing vortices. To find the collapsing locations of vortices, the algebraic, nonlinear system of equations was built. The solution of that algebraic system was obtained using Newton’s procedure. A good initial iterate needs to be provided to succeed in the application of Newton’s procedure. An unconstrained Leverber−Marquart optimization procedure was used to find such a good initial iterate. The numerical studies were conducted, and numerical evidence was presented that if in a collapsing system n=50 point vortices include a few vortices with much greater intensities than the others in the set, the vortices with weaker intensities organize themselves onto the vortex sheet. The collapsing lo... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: adaptive, feedback linearization, fuzzy, photovoltaic (PV) grid inverter, voltage source inverter (VSI)
Three-phase inverters are widely used in grid-connected renewable energy systems. This paper presents a new control methodology for grid-connected inverters using an adaptive fuzzy control (AFC) technique. The implementation of the proposed controller does not need prior knowledge of the system mathematical model. The capabilities of the fuzzy system in approximating the nonlinear functions of the grid-connected inverter system are exploited to design the controller. The proposed controller is capable to achieve the control objectives in the presence of both parametric and modelling uncertainties. The control objectives are to regulate the grid power factor and the dc output voltage of the photovoltaic systems. The closed-loop system stability and the updating laws of the controller parameters are determined via Lyapunov analysis. The proposed controller is simulated under different system disturbances, parameters, and modelling uncertainties to validate the effectiveness of the design... [more]

Keywords: direct drive, experimental study, speed mode, torque mode, transfer function
The torque mode is more suitable for the direct drive 6 degree of freedom (6-DOF) parallel mechanism than the speed mode that both dynamic coupling and current coupling among motors are easily solved, but its key parameters and dynamic characteristics have never been studied, which are important and are the goals of this paper. First the hydraulic system of the direct drive 6-DOF parallel mechanism is simplified. Then the transfer function of the direct drive hydraulic system with the torque mode is deduced together with that of the speed mode. Finally, comparative experiments are conducted. Results show that the dynamic characteristics of the system with the torque mode which are generally worse than those with the speed mode, are mainly determined by the parameters of the motor-pump second-order element of the transfer function composed of two under-damped second-order elements, proportion differentiation (PD) control strategy and dynamic pressure feedback (DPF) control strategy are... Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, offshore wind farm, wake effect, wind energy, wind farm, wind farm operation
This paper presents a new approach based on the optimization of the blade pitching strategy of offshore wind turbines in order to maximize the global energy output considering the Gaussian wake model and including the effect of added turbulence. A genetic algorithm is proposed as an optimization tool in the process of finding the optimal setting of the wind turbines, which aims to determine the individual pitch of each turbine so that the overall losses due to the wake effect are minimised. The integration of the Gaussian model, including the added turbulence effect, for the evaluation of the wakes provides a step forward in the development of strategies for optimal operation of offshore wind farms, as it is one of the state-of-the-art analytical wake models that allow the evaluation of the energy output of the project in a more reliable way. The proposed methodology has been tested through the execution of a set of test cases that show the ability of the proposed tool to maximize the... [more]

Keywords: cosimulation, electrical system, nuclear power plant safety, thermomechanical system
In order to analyze the safety of nuclear power plants (NPP), interactions between thermomechanical and automation processes, the on-site electrical grid, and the off-site transmission system should be studied in detail. However, an initial survey of simulation tools used for the modelling and simulation of NPP shows that existing simulation tools have some drawbacks in properly simulating the aforementioned interactions. In fact, they simulate detailed electrical power systems and thermomechanical systems but neglect the detailed interactions of the electrical system with thermomechanical and automation processes. To address this challenge, this paper develops an open-source co-simulation platform which connects Apros, a proprietary simulator of the thermomechanical and automation processes in NPP, to power system simulators. The proposed platform provides an opportunity to simulate both the electrical and thermomechanical systems of an NPP simultaneously, and study the interactions b... [more]

Keywords: dead oil viscosity, Machine Learning, PVT properties, SuperLearner, viscosity
Dead oil viscosity is a critical parameter to solve numerous reservoir engineering problems and one of the most unreliable properties to predict with classical black oil correlations. Determination of dead oil viscosity by experiments is expensive and time-consuming, which means developing an accurate and quick prediction model is required. This paper implements six machine learning models: random forest (RF), lightgbm, XGBoost, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network, stochastic real-valued (SRV) and SuperLearner to predict dead oil viscosity. More than 2000 pressure−volume−temperature (PVT) data were used for developing and testing these models. A huge range of viscosity data were used, from light intermediate to heavy oil. In this study, we give insight into the performance of different functional forms that have been used in the literature to formulate dead oil viscosity. The results show that the functional form f(γAPI,T), has the best performance, and additional correlating pa... [more]

Keywords: day-ahead and intra-day collaborative scheduling, demand response, integrated energy system, multi-energy network, PV power generation
An integrated energy system (IES) shows great potential in reducing the terminal energy supply cost and improving energy efficiency, but the operation scheduling of an IES, especially integrated with inter-connected multiple energy stations, is rather complex since it is affected by various factors. Toward a comprehensive operation scheduling of multiple energy stations, in this paper, a day-ahead and intra-day collaborative operation model is proposed. The targeted IES consists of electricity, gas, and thermal systems. First, the energy flow and equipment composition of the IES are analyzed, and a detailed operation model of combined equipment and networks is established. Then, with the objective of minimizing the total expected operation cost, a robust optimization of day-ahead and intra-day scheduling for energy stations is constructed subject to equipment operation constraints, network constraints, and so on. The day-ahead operation provides start-up and shut-down scheduling of uni... [more]

Keywords: exhaust emissions, passenger cars, real driving emissions
The paper describes the methodology of research of exhaust emissions from a combustion engine under engine states determined by the vehicle actual operation in the RDE test. The processes of quantities determining the vehicle motion and engine states have been recorded, along with the exhaust emission intensity. Based on the developed research methodology, zero-dimensional characteristics of the processes of the emission intensity have been determined under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. The authors also determined the average specific distance exhaust emissions under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. Based on the above results, the unique characteristics of the relation of the average specific distance emissions and the average vehicle speed have been obtained. The obtained characteristics may be used in the modeling of exhaust emissions from motor vehicles under actual traffic condi... [more]

Keywords: 5G, cooperative communications, cooperative phase steering, industrial IoT, outage probability, spectrum sharing, wireless sensor networks
For the next generation of manufacturing, the industrial internet of things (IoT) has been considered as a key technology that enables smart factories, in which sensors transfer measured data, actuators are controlled, and systems are connected wirelessly. In particular, the wireless sensor network (WSN) needs to operate with low cost, low power (energy), and narrow spectrum, which are the most technical challenges for industrial IoT networks. In general, a relay-assisted communication network has been known to overcome scarce energy problems, and a spectrum-sharing technique has been considered as a promising technique for the radio spectrum shortage problem. In this paper, we propose a phase steering based hybrid cooperative relaying (PSHCR) technique for the generic relay-assisted spectrum-shared WSN, which consists of a secondary transmitter, multiple secondary relays (SRs), a secondary access point, and multiple primary access points. Basically, SRs in the proposed PSHCR technique... [more]
Energy Pathways for Future Norwegian Residential Building Areas

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building requirements, building stock, energy planning, energy supply, residential buildings
Owing to stricter building energy requirements, future buildings will be characterized by low base loads and occasional high peaks. However, future building areas will still contain existing and historical buildings with high energy demand. Meanwhile, there is a requirement that future building areas should obtain energy from renewable energy sources, while existing buildings need to be transited to renewables. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop an approach for modelling energy pathways for future Norwegian residential building areas by analyzing different energy supply systems. Several calculation methods were combined: building simulation, energy supply technology simulation, heat demand aggregation, and data post-processing. The results showed that the energy pathways would be very dependent on CO2-factors for energy sources, and it is hard to predict accurate CO2-factors. An increasing housing stock development would slightly increase the CO2 emissions towards 2050, al... [more]
Fossil vs. Active Geothermal Systems: A Field and Laboratory Method to Disclose the Relationships between Geothermal Fluid Flow and Geological Structures at Depth

Keywords: fieldwork, geothermal systems, hydrothermal veins, structural geology
Comparison between fossil and analogue active geothermal systems permit to obtain key-parameters to define a conceptual model of the area under exploration. The approach is based on structural, kinematic, and fluid inclusions analyses. The fossil system is investigated to describe the distribution of the hydrothermal mineralization as witness of the fluid flow through geological structures and bodies, at depth. Structural and kinematic data (to define the preferential direction of fluid flow) are collected in structural stations and by scan lines and scan boxes on key outcrops. Distribution, length, width of fractures, and hydrothermal veins bring to evaluate permeability in the fossil system and, by analogy, in the deep roots of the active system. Fluid inclusions analysis shed light on density, viscosity, and temperature of the paleo-fluids. Data integration provides the hydraulic conductivity. In active geothermal systems, fieldwork is addressed to paleo-stress analysis with data fr... [more]

The decentralization of the large-scale energy sector, its replacement with pro-ecological, dispersed production sources and building a citizen dimension of the energy sector are the directional objectives of the energy transformation in the European Union. Building energy self-sufficiency at a local level is possible, based on the so-called Energy Communities, which include energy clusters and energy cooperatives. Several dozen pilot projects for energy clusters have been implemented in Poland, while energy cooperatives, despite being legally sanctioned and potentially a simpler formula of operation, have not functioned in practice. This article presents the coopetitive nature of Energy Communities. The authors analysed the principles and benefits of creating Energy Communities from a regulatory and practical side. An important element of the analysis is to indicate the managerial, coopetitive nature of the strategies implemented within the Energy Communities. Their members, while ope... [more]

Keywords: convection, diffusion coefficient, drying, wood biomass
Determination of the mass diffusion coefficient for dried, inhomogeneous material is difficult as it depends on the drying agent temperature and the moisture content and physical structure of the material. The paper presents a method for efficient determination of the water diffusion coefficient for wood solid cuboids dried using convective drying methods. In this work, the authors define a theoretical dependence of the Fourier number on reduced water content in a convectively dried cuboidal solid, based on a simplified theoretical solution of the diffusion equation for such a body. The material for drying included shoots of common osier, robinia (false acacia), multiflora rose, and energy poplar, dried at temperatures of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C, in free convection. The obtained results differ from the theoretically anticipated changes of the coefficient.

Keywords: analytic solutions, fault tree analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic safety assessment, uncertainty analysis
Monte Carlo simulations are widely used for uncertainty analysis in the probabilistic safety assessment of nuclear power plants. Despite many advantages, such as its general applicability, a Monte Carlo simulation has inherent limitations as a simulation-based approach. This study provides a mathematical formulation and analytic solutions for the uncertainty analysis in a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). Starting from the definitions of variables, mathematical equations are derived for synthesizing probability density functions for logical AND, logical OR, and logical OR with rare event approximation of two independent events. The equations can be applied consecutively when there exist more than two events. For fail-to-run failures, the probability density function for the unavailability has the same probability distribution as the probability density function (PDF) for the failure rate under specified conditions. The effectiveness of the analytic solutions is demonstrated by app... [more]

Keywords: adaptive frequency hopping, bluetooth, frequency hopping, spectrum sensing, wireless security
Thanks to the frequency hopping nature of Bluetooth, sniffing Bluetooth traffic with low-cost devices has been considered as a challenging problem. To this end, BlueEar, a state-of-the-art low-cost sniffing system with two Bluetooth radios proposes a set of novel machine learning-based subchannel classification techniques for adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) map prediction by collecting packet statistics and spectrum sensing. However, there is no explicit evaluation results on the accuracy of BlueEar’s AFH map prediction. To this end, in this paper, we revisit the spectrum sensing-based classifier, one of the subchannel classification techniques in BlueEar. At first, we build an independent implementation of the spectrum sensing-based classifier with one Ubertooth sniffing radio. Using the implementation, we conduct a subchannel classification experiment with several machine learning classifiers where spectrum features are utilized. Our results show that higher accuracy can be achieved... [more]

Keywords: air conditioning, borehole heat exchanger, experimental, gas injection, peak load
The objective of this work is to analyze a gas injection borehole heat exchanger coupled with a desiccant assisted air conditioning system during cooling and heating operation. A common problem that occurs in air conditioning systems is peak loads, during which the cooling or heating power of the soil can be exceeded. To counteract this drawback, a gas injection borehole heat exchanger, which is capable of creating artificial groundwater flow along the heat exchanger by inducing a pressure difference inside the well, is used. Experimental results of the performance differences between a conventional and a gas injection borehole heat exchanger are presented. Under the same inlet conditions, a reduction in the outlet temperature of up to 2 °C is achieved compared with an equivalent conventional borehole heat exchanger in cooling mode. The maximum cooling power is increased by 26%. As a result, a fast and dynamic responding control of the heat transfer between the heat exchanger and the s... [more]
