Extended SINDICOMP: Characterizing MV Voltage Transformers with Sine Waves

The paper presents a method for the frequency characterization of voltage transformers (VTs) for medium voltage (MV) grids which involves only sine waves. It is called extended SINDICOMP, since it is an extended version of the previously developed technique SINDICOMP. It requires, in the first step, an evaluation and a compensation of the non-linearity introduced by the VT when it is supplied with a 50 Hz sinusoidal input at rated value. Then, the VT is characterized with a low voltage sinusoidal frequency sweep from the second harmonic frequency up to the first resonance frequency. Some rules to build the approximated frequency response, starting from these two sets of data, are given in the paper. The proposed approach is applied to three commercial MV VTs. Significant improvement of the VT performance is obtained, compared to the use of a frequency response obtained from the low voltage characterization.

Parasitic Effects of PWM-VSI Control Leading to Torque Harmonics in AC Drives

Precise torque control without pulsations is one of the major quality issues in pulse-width modulated voltage-source inverter (PWM-VSI) drives. Theoretically, it could be postulated that at frequencies of some kHz, the machine’s inertia absorbs switching frequency torque harmonics, and the resulting torque becomes smooth; though, in reality, parasitic effects in voltage source inverters may cause additional torque harmonics of low order. In particular, first, second and sixth torque harmonics are observed. Such torque harmonics are especially dangerous for normal drive operation, since they may be amplified by drive train resonances at corresponding rotational velocities. New parasitic effects in PWM-VSI control, leading to torque harmonic of low order, are described in the paper, and recommendations for their compensation are given.

Robust Control of a PMSG-Based Wind Turbine Generator Using Lyapunov Function

This paper proposes a robust finite-time controller (FTC) for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine generator (WTG). An adaptive observer is used for the rotor angle, rotor speed, and turbine torque estimations of the PMSG, thus eliminating the use of anemometers. The robustness of the proposed FTC regarding parameter uncertainty and the external weak power grid is analyzed. The impacts of the power grid short-circuit ratio (SCR) at the point of common coupling (PCC) on the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller and the proposed FTC are discussed. Case studies illustrate that the proposed observer-based FTC is able to estimate the mechanical variables accurately and provides robust control for WTGs with parameter uncertainty and weak power grids.

Increasing Parameters of Diesel Engines by Their Transformation for Methanol Conversion Products

The work is aimed at solving the problem of converting existing diesel power drives to gas fuels, which are cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternatives to diesel fuel. Method of energy efficiency increasing of alternative fuels has been improved. Thermochemical essence of energy increasing of source fuel based on the provisions of thermodynamics is considered. Alternative methanol fuel has been chosen as initial product for conversion process and its cost, energy value, and temperature conditions have been taken into account. Calculations showed that the thermal effect from combustion of the converted mixture of CO and H2 exceeds the effect from combustion of the same amount of non-convertible methanol. Co-Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Lignocellulosic Biomass in Supercritical Water

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an effective technology for bio-crude production. To date, various co-liquefaction studies were performed with contrasted (different composition) biomasses in subcritical water. Therefore, the present study investigated co-hydrothermal liquefaction of similar kinds of lignocellulosic biomasses (wheat straw, eucalyptus, and pinewood) in supercritical water under equal ratios at 400 °C with catalytic medium (K2CO3). The lower bio-crude and higher solid yields were obtained in co-liquefaction experiments, as compared to liquefaction of individual feedstocks. On the other hand, higher carbon recovery and higher HHVs were noticed in co-liquefaction-derived bio-crudes. Design Selection and Geometry in OWC Wave Energy Converters for Performance

Although oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters are arguably one of the most studied technologies, it is not clear which chamber geometry, among all of the available alternatives, would provide the best performance at a site of interest. In this work, a numerical model based on the Navier-Stokes equations for two compressible fluids, using a volume-of-fluid interface-capturing approach, is implemented to determine the best performing OWC geometry in a case study off the Port of Vigo (NW Spain). Four general shapes of OWC are analyzed: classic, stepped-bottom, U-shaped and L-shaped, and geometrical variants are investigated. In total, 18 chamber geometries are studied, considering the same turbine geometry in all of them. Total Productive Maintenance Approach to an Increase of the Energy Efficiency of a Hotel Facility and Mitigation of Water Consumption

Increasing greenhouse gas emissions and more and more restrictive European Union regulations necessitate the reduction of energy demand in buildings, including hotels. A more economical way of managing and operating a facility may lead to competitive advantage and a reduction in the negative impact on the environment. This study indicated that the hotel facility wastes significant amounts of water and energy, and the main sources of losses were determined. The design assumption was to achieve savings by introducing technical improvements in the most energy and water-consuming areas. The modification consisted of replacing some of the lighting, fittings, and ventilation. The results of the achieved water and energy savings were compared with the consumption recorded in 2019. We develop a new type of efficiency measures and indexes for DEA and then compare the performance of major electric power companies and city gas companies by examining a recent data set that include years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The data set incorporates the number of patents as an output that represents companies’ capability for technology innovation to investigate intertemporal changes of efficiency through index measures. Enhancement of Biogas Production from Macroalgae Ulva latuca via Ozonation Pretreatment

One of the dominant species of green algae growing along the Mediterranean coast of Egypt is Ulva lactuca. Pretreatment can have a major effect on biogas production because hydrolysis of the algae cell wall structure is a rate-limiting stage in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The use of ozone, a new pretreatment, to boost biogas production from the green algae Ulva lactuca was investigated in this study. Ozonation at various dosages was used in contrast to untreated biomass, and the effect on the performance of subsequent mesophilic AD using two separate inoculums (cow manure and activated sludge) was examined. The findings indicated that, in different studies, ozonation pretreatment showed a substantial increase in biogas yield relative to untreated algae. Incorrect adjustment of railway traffic control devices (rtc) to the specificity of the area in terms of lightning density may result in their damage by lightning-caused electromagnetic pulses. In this paper, the enhanced auto-tuning technique based on the injection of two sinusoidal test signals of different frequencies applicable on the low voltage induction motor self-commissioning process is presented. The main feature of the proposed technique resides in the advanced signal processing of measured IM voltage and current signals based on the cascaded delay signal cancelation structure. This processing algorithm enables the filtering of the symmetry-related fundamental harmonic from the non-symmetrical test signal excitation typical for the self-commissioning process. Based upon the steady-state response from the proposed filtering block, the simple yet effective calculation method derives the complete parameter set of the IM equivalent circuit. The technique is validated through the variety of computer simulations and experimental tests on the digitally controlled low voltage IM traction drive.

Grid Support with Wind Turbines: The Case of the 2019 Blackout in Flensburg

The work presented in this paper aims to show how modern wind turbines can help to control the frequency in a small grid which suffers from large power imbalances. It is shown for an exemplary situation, which occurred in Flensburg’s distribution grid in 2019: a major blackout, which occurred after almost two hours in islanding operation, affecting almost the entire distribution grid, which supplies approximately 55,000 households and businesses. For the analysis, a wind turbine model and a grid support controller developed at the Wind Energy Technology Institute are combined with real measurements from the day of the blackout to generate a fictional yet realistic case study for such an islanding situation. Study on the Sensitivity of a Gyroscope System Homing a Quadcopter onto a Moving Ground Target under the Action of External Disturbance

This paper investigates the sensitivity (resistance) of a quadcopter on-board gyroscope system for the observation and tracking of a moving ground target to changing parameters of its regulator under interference conditions. It was shown that the gain in matrix elements is most sensitive, and even their slightest deviation from optimal values can lead to reduced target tracking efficiency and even loss of control system stability. Furthermore, the authors studied the energy expenditure at various gyroscope system control parameter values, while homing a quadcopter onto a ground target. A Matlab/Simulink environment was used to conduct simulations of the controlled gyroscope system dynamics. Selected test results are shown in graphic form.

A Laboratory Study on the Shear Strength Behavior of Two Till Deposits from Northern Germany

This paper presents the findings of a laboratory study of the shear strength and yielding behavior of two glacial till soil deposits from the area of Heiligenhafen, northern Germany. The tests were conducted on reconstituted forms of the soils using a triaxial cell capable of controlling the temperature of the specimens. The experimental program included a series of multi-stage consolidated drained (CD) compression triaxial tests at temperature ranges between 20 and 60 °C. For the temperature range considered in this study, a mild reduction in the effective friction angle of the two till soils of less than 1° was observed due to an increase in temperature from 20 to 60 °C. Windows, which have a U-value that is governed by an insulating glass unit (IGU) U-value, must be a building’s only enclosure element, which has no design value concept. The declared U-value, which is calculated or measured with 0 °C of external ambient temperature, is used instead of the design value. For most of a building’s elements, its thermal transmittance with a decrease in the external temperature diminishes a little, i.e., improves. However, for modern window IGUs with Low-E coatings, it is the opposite: the thermal transmittance with a lowering external temperature increases.
