Numerical and Experimental Analyses on Motion Responses on Heaving Point Absorbers Connected to Large Semi-Submersibles

This study considers the motion responses of heaving point absorbers (HPAs) connected to large semi-submersibles. To analyze the motion responses for HPAs, a motion response amplitude operator (RAO) of a single HPA connected to a fixed wall was obtained in a two-dimensional wave flume. A frequency-domain eigenvalue analysis is used to evaluate the motion RAO of a single HPA, and the experimental and numerical results of motion RAO were compared. A model test was conducted to analyze the motions of multiple HPAs connected to a large semi-submersible in a 3D ocean basin. The motion RAOs of the multiple HPAs connected to the large semi-submersible were compared with the motion RAO of the single HPA connected to the fixed wall.

Conductive Compartmented Capsules Encapsulating a Bitumen Rejuvenator

This paper explores the potential use of conductive alginate capsules encapsulating a bitumen rejuvenator as a new extrinsic self-healing asphalt method. The capsules combine two existing self-healing asphalt technologies: (1) rejuvenator encapsulation and (2) induction heating to create a self-healing system that will provide rapid and effective asphalt pavement repair. The work presents a proof of concept for the encapsulation process, which involves embedding the capsules into the bitumen mortar mixture and the survival rate of the capsules in the asphalt mixture. The traditional perturbation and observation (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm of a structure is simple and low-cost. However, the P&O algorithm is prone to divergence under solar radiation when the latter varies rapidly and the P&O algorithm cannot track the maximum power point (MPP) under partial shading conditions (PSCs). This study proposes an algorithm from the P&O algorithm combined with the solar radiation value detection scheme, where the solar radiation value detection is based on the solar photovoltaic (SPV) module equivalent conductance threshold control (CTC). While the proposed algorithm can immediately judge solar radiation, it also has suitable control strategies to achieve the high efficiency of MPPT especially for the rapid change in solar radiation and PSCs. The objective of this paper was to create a mathematical model of vacuum drops in a form that enables the testing of the impact of design parameters of a milking cluster on the values of vacuum drops in the claw. Simulation tests of the milking cluster were conducted, with the use of a simplified model of vacuum drops in the form of a fourth-degree polynomial. Sensitivity analysis and a simulation of a model with a simplified structure of vacuum drops in the claw were carried out. As a result, the impact of the milking machine’s design parameters on the milking process could be analysed. The results showed that a change in the local loss and linear drag coefficient in the long milk duct will have a lower impact on vacuum drops if a smaller flux of inlet air, a higher head of the air/liquid mix, and a higher diameter of the long milk tube are used.

Response Surface Methodology Routed Optimization of Performance of Hydroxy Gas Enriched Diesel Fuel in Compression Ignition Engines

In this study, the response surface methodology (RSM) optimization technique was employed for investigating the impact of hydroxy gas (HHO) enriched diesel on performance, acoustics, smoke and exhaust gas emissions of the compression ignition (CI) engine. The engine was operated within the HHO flow rate range of 0−10 L/min and engine loads of 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 75%. The results disclosed that HHO concentration and engine load had a substantial influence on the response variables. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results of developed quadratic models indicated the appropriate fit for all models. Moreover, the optimization of the user-defined historical design of an experiment identified an optimum HHO flow rate of 8 L/min and 41% engine load, with composite desirability of 0.733. Research for a Non-Standard Kenics Static Mixer with an Eccentricity Factor

The Kenics static mixer is one of the most widely studied static mixers, whose structure−function relationship has been studied by varying its aspect ratio and modifying the surface. However, the effect of the symmetric structure of the Kenics static mixer itself on twisting the fluid has been neglected. In order to study how the symmetrical structure of the Kenics static mixer impacts the fluid flow, we changed the center position of elements at twist angle 90° and introduced the eccentricity factor γ. We applied LHS-PLS to study this non-standard Kenics static mixer and obtained the statistical correlations of the aspect ratio, Reynolds number, and eccentricity factor on relative Nusselt number and relative friction factor. Oxygen is a harmful substance in many processes because it can bring out corrosion and oxidation of food. This study aimed to enhance the removal of dissolved oxygen (DO) from water by employing a novel rotor−stator reactor (RSR). The effectiveness of the nitrogen stripping coupled with vacuum degassing technique for the removal of DO from water in the RSR was investigated. The deoxygenation efficiency (η) and the mass transfer coefficient (KLa) were determined under various operating conditions for the rotational speed, liquid volumetric flow rate, gas volumetric flow rate, and vacuum degree. For conventional cooling analysis, we use air as a coolant and graphene nanoplatelet aqueous nanofluids (GNAN) for nanofluid cooling. We make a comparison between traditional and nanofluid cooling to find the best performance. GNAN at a dispersion of 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1-wt% are added to the cooling system. A centralized bioenergy unit was simulated, focusing on optimizing the manure transport chain, installing a centralized biogas plant, operation costs of the process, biogas upgrading, organic fertilizer production, and economic analyses. Comarca Lagunera from northeast Mexico was chosen as a study zone due to the existing number of dairy farms and livestock population (64,000 cattle heads). Synthesis of MFe2O4/CNS (M = Zn, Ni, Mn) Composites Derived from Rice Husk by the Hydrothermal-Microwave Method for Remediation of Paddy Fields

In this research work, MFe2O4/CNS was prepared using the hydrothermal−microwave method. The influence of cations (M) toward functional groups of composites and their performance in pesticide degradation were studied. Rice husk was pyrolyzed hydrothermally (200 °C, 6 h) and by microwave (800 W, 40 min). Each product was mixed with MCl2 (Zn, Ni, Mn), FeCl3, KOH, and water, and calcined (600 °C, 15 min) to obtain a composite. Characterization by XRD confirmed the MFe2O4/CNS structure. The FTIR spectra of the composites showed different band sharpness related to C-O and M-O. A mixture of dried paddy farm soil, composite, BPMC (buthylphenylmethyl carbamate) pesticide solution (0.25%), and H2O2 solution (0.15%) was kept under dark conditions for 48 h. Biogas Reforming as a Precursor for Integrated Algae Biorefineries: Simulation and Techno-Economic Analysis

Biogas is a significant by-product produced in algae processing and may be used for many different applications, not only as a renewable energy carrier but also as a chemical intermediate in integrated algae-based biorefineries. In this work, the reforming of biogas to H2/CO2 mixtures (referred to as SynFeed) as feed for the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol is investigated. Two conventional processes, namely steam methane and autothermal reforming, with upstream CO2 separation from raw biogas are compared to novel concepts of direct biogas bi- and tri-reforming. In addition, downstream CO2 separation from SynFeed using the commercial Selexol process to produce pure H2 and CO2 is considered. This research paper evaluates hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a possible treatment for sewage sludge, including phosphorus recycling. German governmental requirements force a high number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to recover phosphorus from sewage sludge above limits of 20 g kgTS−1 before further disposal (e.g., co-incineration). The results show that pH reduction has a positive effect on shifting phosphorus to the liquid phase during HTC. Although the experimental results of this research do not yet achieve the necessary phosphorus reduction, various calculations are made to achieve this goal in future experimental studies. Study on the Flow Characteristics of Desulfurization Ash Fine Particles in a Circulating Fluidized Bed

In view of the current status of catalytic cracking flue gas treatment, it is necessary to study the flow environment of desulfurization ash particles, which are a type of Geldart C particle, in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) for semi-dry flue gas desulphurization using CFB technology. This study investigated the flow characteristics of desulphurization ash particles in a riser with an inner diameter of 70 mm and a height of 12.6 m, at a gas velocity of 4−7 m/s and a solids circulation rate of 15−45 kg/m2·s. The solids holdup in the axial distribution is relatively high near the bottom of the riser, and gradually decreases as the riser height increases, with a stable value from the middle to the top of the riser. To prevent microbial growth, chemical solvents are typically utilized. However, chemical solvents are hazardous to human health with low antimicrobial effects. Metallic-element (such as copper, silver, and gold) nanoparticles have many applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are efficient owing to their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative properties. The objective of this study was to perform biogenic synthesis of copper nanoparticles using three different spices (star anise, seed of Illicium verum; nutmeg, seed of Myristica fragrans; and mace, membrane covering the seed of Myristica fragrans) and determine their antibacterial properties. Energy Optimization and Effective Control of Reactive Distillation Process for the Production of High Purity Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a promising renewable energy option that significantly reduces the emission of greenhouse gases and other toxic byproducts. However, a major challenge in the industrial scale production of biodiesel is the desired product purity. To this end, reactive distillation (RD) processes, which involve simultaneous removal of the byproduct during the transesterification reaction, can drive the equilibrium towards high product yield. In the present study, we first optimized the heat exchange network (HEN) for a high purity RD process leading to a 34% reduction in the overall energy consumption. Further, a robust control scheme is proposed to mitigate any feed disturbance in the process that may compromise the product purity. Effect of Straight, Inclined and Curved Fins on Natural Convection and Entropy Generation of a Nanofluid in a Square Cavity Influenced by a Magnetic Field

In this paper, the free convective heat transfer of nanofluids in a square cavity is simulated using a numerical method. The angle of the cavity could be changed in the horizontal axis from 0 to 90 degrees. The cavity is exposed under a constant magnetic field. Two opposite walls of the cavity are cold and warm, and the rest of the walls are insulated. On the hot wall, there are two fins with the same wall temperature. The equations were discretized by the finite volume method (FVM) and then solved using the SIMPLE algorithm. Three different fin configurations (straight, inclined and curved) were studied in terms of heat transfer rate and generation of entropy. According to the simulation results, the heat transfer rate was improved by tilting the fins toward the top or bottom of the cavity.
