March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computational fluid dynamic, flow characteristics, microorganism attachment, microstructure, shear stress
The research of marine antifouling is mainly conducted from the aspects of chemistry, physics, and biology. In the present work, the movement model of microorganisms along or against the flow direction on the microstructural surface was established. The model of globose algae with a diameter of 5 μm in the near-wall area was simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the fluid kinematic characteristics and shear stress distribution over different-sized microstructures and in micropits were compared. Simulation results revealed that the increase of the β value (height to width ratio) was prone to cause vortexes in micropits. In addition, the closer the low-velocity region of the vortex center to the microstructural surface, the more easily the upper fluid of the microstructure slipped in the vortex flow and reduced the microbial attachment. Moreover, the shear stress in the micropit with a height and width of 2 μm was significantly higher than those in others; thus, microbes i... [more]

Keywords: dielectric liquid mixtures, ECT, insulating liquids, insulation aging, insulation diagnostics, mineral oil, natural ester, retrofilling of power transformers, streaming electrification, synthetic ester
Natural and synthetic esters are liquids characterized by insulating properties, high flash point, and biodegradability. For this reason, they are more and more often used as an alternative to conventional mineral oils. Esters are used to fill new or operating transformers previously filled with mineral oil (retrofilling). It is technically unfeasible to completely remove mineral oil from a transformer. Its small residues create with esters a mixture with features significantly different from those of the base liquids. This article presents electrostatic charging tendency (ECT) tests for mixtures of fresh and aged Trafo EN mineral oil with Envirotemp FR3 natural ester from the retrofilling point of view. Under unfavorable conditions, the flow electrification phenomenon can damage the solid insulation in transformers with forced oil circulation. The ECT of the insulating liquids has been specified using the volume density of the qw charge. This parameter has been determined using the Ab... [more]

Keywords: DC power flow, estimation method, power flow, regulation capacity, unified power flow controller (UPFC)
As the latest generation of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices, the unified power flow controller (UPFC) has comprehensive control capability and has played an important role in modern power systems. Research on UPFC steady-state power flow regulation capability is valuable for the design and operation of UPFC projects. To analyze the UPFC regulation capability, in this paper, the interaction between the UPFC and the external system is studied and the key factors of UPFC regulation capability are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the changes in the voltage magnitude and phase angle difference of UPFC-embedded line terminals will hinder the UPFC from regulating the power flow and decrease the UPFC regulation capability. Therefore, the UPFC power flow regulation capability is not only related to the parameters of the UPFC and its installation line, but also related to grid parameters. To analyze the UPFC active power flow regulation capability in practical power grids, the r... [more]

Keywords: distribution network, ECOST, electric vehicle, reliability, time–space network, vehicle to grid
Reliability is an important index which determines the power service and quality provided to customers. As the demand increases continuously and the system changes in accordance with the environmental regulation, the reliability assessment in the distribution system becomes crucial. In this paper, we propose methods for improving the reliability of the distribution system using electric vehicles (EVs) in the system. In this paper, EVs are used as power supplying devices, such as a transportable energy storage system (ESS) which supplies power when fault occurs in the system, and by using a time−space network (TSN) in particular, EV capacity in accordance with the load arrival time was calculated. Unlike other existing reliability assessments, we did not use the average load of customers. Instead, by taking into account the load pattern by times, we considered the priority for load supply in accordance with the failure scenarios and failure times. Based on the priority calculated for ea... [more]

Keywords: first-order inertial link, frequency domain analysis, LCL type filter, linear active disturbance rejection control, total disturbance differential
In wind power systems, LCL inverters have technical problems. First of all, they are non-linear systems and are no longer adapted to the superposition principle; secondly, the coupling is great; finally, it is easy to be interfered by the outside world, and the interference mainly comes from voltage fluctuations and nonlinear loads on the grid. Therefore, it is difficult to control the output result, and then the improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is applied. The main improvement of the improved LADRC lies in the linear extended state observer (LESO). Introducing the total disturbance differential signal in LESO, and in order to improve the ability to suppress high-frequency noise, a series of first-order inertia link was applied. The analysis method in this article is mainly frequency domain analysis, under the condition of obtaining LADRC closed-loop transfer function and frequency band characteristics, theoretical analysis of LADRC tracking estimation abili... Keywords: brittle spot identification, brittleness, elastic properties, rock physics, shale reservoir
Combinatorial analysis of key petrophysical parameters can provide valuable information about subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs. This is particularly important for reservoirs with unconventional rock formations that, due to the low permeability, need to be stimulated by fracturing treatment to provide fluid flow to the exploitation wellbore. In this article, based on data from unconventional shale formations (N Poland), we outline how independent sets of elastic and petrophysical parameters and other reservoir features can be co-analyzed to estimate the fracture susceptibility of shale intervals, which are characterized by a high total organic carbon (TOC) content and high porosity. These features were determined by analysis of each horizon’s elastic and mineralogical brittleness index (BI). These two variants were calculated first in 1D; integrated with the seismic data and finally compared with other parameters such as acoustic impedance, ratio of compressional and shear wave velocit... With high sensitivity and strong tolerance capability for the fault resistance, the fault component-based directional relay (FCBDR) has drawn considerable attention from industry and academia. However, the best application environment for FCBDR no longer exists when considering the large-scale connection of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms. Through a detailed analysis of the superimposed impedance of DFIG, this paper reveals that the performances of FCBDRs may be shown negatively impacted by the fault behaviors of DFIG when the crowbar protection inputs. In addition, this paper proposes a mitigation countermeasure to deal with those issues. The proposed countermeasure takes advantage of the different superimposed impedance features of DFIG compared with that of the synchronous generator (SG) to enhance the adaptability of the conventional FCBDRs. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed countermeasure can differentiate the fault direction clearly un... [more]

Keywords: fractional calculus, Grünwald–Letnikov definition, non-integer order modelling, synchronous generator
This article presents a comparison between integer and non-integer order modelling of a synchronous generator, in the frequency domain as well as in the time domain. The classical integer order model was compared to one containing half-order systems. The half-order systems are represented in a Park d-q axis equivalent circuit as impedances modelled by half-order transmittances. Using a direct method based on the approximation of the half-order derivatives by the Grünwald−Letnikov definition, a state-space equation system was solved. For both models, a computational program written in Matlab® software was used. For the purpose of time domain simulation, the machine models were connected to an electric load composed of an RL circuit. To validate and compare both models, simulation results of a three-phase short-circuit and a no-load voltage recovery were compared with corresponding measurements performed on a solid salient-pole synchronous generator of 125 kVA.

Keywords: energy feedback, grid power regulation, regenerative braking energy, synchronverter
Generally running with frequent braking over short distances, the urban rail transit train generates great quantities of regenerative braking energy (RBE). The RBE feedback system can effectively recycle RBE and give it back to the AC grid. However, the lack of damp and inertia of generators makes conventional PWM RBE feedback system more sensitive to power fluctuations. To address this issue, a synchronverter-based RBE feedback system of urban rail transit is designed in this paper. First, the structure of the feedback system is presented. Then, the synchronverter-based control strategy with greater flexibility and higher stability is fully discussed. Furthermore, the parameter design of the system is analyzed in detail. Finally, simulation results and experimental results are provided to show the good dynamic performance of the system. Using this synchronverter-based approach, the system supplies traction power to the traction network when the train accelerates and gives the RBE back... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dewatering, DoE, dry matter, hydrothermal treatment, moisture, Optimization, phosphorus, regression model, RSM, sewage sludge
As the use of sewage sludge as a fertilizer in agriculture is increasingly restricted in the European Union, other ways to utilize this waste stream need to be developed. Sewage sludge is an ideal input material for the process of hydrothermal carbonization, as it can convert wet biomass into a solid energy carrier with increased mechanical dewaterability. Digested sewage sludge was hydrothermally carbonized at 160−200 °C for 30−60 min with initial pH levels of 1.93−8.08 to determine optimal reaction conditions for enhanced dewaterability and phosphorus release into the liquid phase. Design of experiments was used to develop response surface models, which can be applied to optimize the process conditions. For optimal dewaterability and phosphorus release, low initial pH values (pH 1.93) and mild temperatures around 170 °C are favorable. Because holding time had no statistically relevant effect, a dependency of reaction time was investigated. Though it did not yield substantially differ... [more]

Keywords: annular jet pump, critical flow ratio, incipient cavitation number, numerical simulation, streamlined profile
To improve the working performance of the early annular jet pump (EAJP), a streamlined annular jet pump (SAJP) was proposed. The flow field and working performance of the EAJP and SAJP with an area ratio (m) of 1.75 were numerically studied and compared, separately, by using the combination of the Realizable k-ε turbulence model and the Schnerr−Sauer cavitation model. The results show that the efficiency of the SAJP is higher than that of the EAJP, when the flow ratio (q) is higher than 0.30, with a maximum increase of 1.2%. Furthermore, the high-efficiency area of the SAJP (q = 0.40~0.69) is wider than that of the EAJP (q = 0.36~0.57). There is no flow separation and low local pressure in the SAJP, due to the conjunction part of the suction chamber, throat, diffuser and outlet pipe without the structural mutation. It was found that the incipient cavitation number (σi) of the SAJP and EAJP was 0.541 and 0.578, respectively; therefore, the cavitation performance of the SAJP is better. M... [more]

Keywords: body-fitted grid generation, function estimation, inverse heat transfer, sensitivity analysis, steepest-descent method, timewise varying heat flux
A new sensitivity analysis scheme is presented based on explicit expressions for sensitivity coefficients to estimate timewise varying heat flux in heat conduction problems over irregular geometries using the transient readings of a single sensor. There is no prior information available on the functional form of the unknown heat flux; hence, the inverse problem is regarded as a function estimation problem and sensitivity and adjoint problems are involved in the solution of the inverse problem to recover the unknown heat flux. However, using the proposed sensitivity analysis scheme, one can compute all sensitivity coefficients explicitly in only one direct problem solution at each iteration without the need for solving the sensitivity and adjoint problems. In other words, the functional form of the unknown heat flux can be numerically estimated by using the parameter estimation approach. In this method, the irregular shape of heat-conducting body is meshed using the boundary-fitted grid... [more]

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have become an increasingly important topic in the field of sustainable transportation research, alongside distributed generation, reactive power compensation, charging optimization, and control. The process of loading on existing power system infrastructures with increasing demand requires appropriate impact indices to be analyzed. This paper studies the impact of integrating electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) into a residential distribution network. An actual case study is modeled to acquire nodal voltages and feeder currents. The model obtains the optimal integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with charging stations while considering reactive power compensation. The impact of EV integration for the case study results in two peaks, which show a 6.4% and 17% increase. Varying the inverter to the PV ratio from 1.1 to 2 decreases system losses by 34% to 41%. The type of charging is dependent on the maximum penetration of EVCSs that the ne... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, electricity price, linear regression, similar-day method
This paper presents four refined distance models to the application of forecasting short-term electricity price namely Euclidean norm, Manhattan distance, cosine coefficient, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The four refined models were constructed and used to select the days, which are like a reference day in electricity prices and loads, called similar days in this study. Using the similar days, the electricity prices of a forecast day were further obtained by similar day regression (SDR) and similar day based artificial neural network (SDANN). The simulation results of the case of the PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland) interchange energy market indicate the superiority and availability of the selection 45 framework days and three similar days based on Pearson correlation coefficient model.

Subject: Other
Keywords: expansion, inverter, module, multilevel inverter, switched capacitor
Conventional multilevel inverters have problems in terms of their complicated expansion and large number of devices. This paper proposes a modular expanded multilevel inverter, which can effectively simplify the expansion and reduce the number of devices. The proposed inverter can ensure the voltage balancing of the voltage-dividing capacitors. The cascading of the T-type switched capacitor module and the step-by-step charging method of the switched capacitors enable the inverter to achieve high output voltage levels and voltage gain. In addition, the inversion can be achieved without the H-bridge, which greatly reduces the total standing voltage of the switches. The nine-level inverter of the proposed topology can be realized with only ten switches, obtaining a voltage gain that is two times larger. The above merits were validated through theoretical analysis and experiments. The proposed inverter has good application prospects in medium- and low-voltage photovoltaic power generation.

Borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) systems are a viable option to meet the increasing cooling demand and to increase the sustainability of low-temperature district heating and cooling (DHC) grids. They are able to store the rejected heat of cooling cycles on a seasonal basis and deliver this heat during the heating season. However, their efficient practical implementation requires a thorough analysis from technical, economic and environmental points of view. In this comparative study, a dynamic exergoeconomic assessment is adopted to evaluate various options for integrating such a storage system into 4th generation DHC grids in heating dominated regions. For this purpose, different layouts are modeled and parameterized. Multi-objective optimization is conducted, varying the most important design variables in order to maximize exergetic efficiency and to minimize levelized cost of energy (LCOE). A comparison of the optimal designs of the different layouts reveals that passive coolin... [more]

Keywords: plug-in electric vehicle (PEV), stochastic modeling, transmission system planning
The number of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has rapidly increased owing to the government’s active promotion policy worldwide. Consequently, in the near future, their charging demand is expected to grow enough for consideration in the planning process of the transmission system. This study proposes a stochastic method for modeling the PEV charging demand, of which the time and amount are uncertain. In the proposed method, the distribution of PEVs is estimated by the substations based on the number of electricity customers, PEV expansion target, and statistics of existing vehicles. An individual PEV charging profile is modeled using the statistics of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles driving and by aggregating the PEV charging profiles per 154 kV substation, the charging demand of PEVs is determined for consideration as part of the total electricity demand in the planning process of transmission systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through case studie... [more]

Keywords: advanced building controls, automatically generated heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) controllers, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) data are typically exchanged using the Industrial Foundation Classes (IFC) standard. An IFC-based BIM model is a container for data that is created during the design and planning phase and is therefore a rich source of information for the commissioning phase, in which building services are brought to operation. This paper examines the use of BIM data for automated generation of control strategies for energy systems, thus simplifying and accelerating the commissioning phase. We present a methodology to create control strategies of a building heating system with several variations of renewable energy systems and include both heat provisioning and a distribution system. The performances of Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC) anode-supported planar cells with a 10 cm2 active surface were studied versus the combination of cathode thickness and the presence of an Anode Functional Layer (AFL). The temperature range was 500 to 650 °C, and Gd0.1Ce0.9O2−x (GDC) was used as the electrolyte material, Ni-GDC as the anode material, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−d (LSCF48) as the cathode material. The power density, conductivity, and activation energy of different samples were determined in order to investigate the influence of the cathode thickness and AFL on the performance. These results showed an improvement in the performances when the AFL was not present. The maximum power density reached 370 mW·cm−2 at 650 °C for a sample with a cathode thickness of 50 µm and an electrolyte layer that was 20 µm thick. Moreover, it was highlighted that a thinner cathode layer reduced the power density of the cell.

The ever-increasing demand for transport is sustained by internal combustion (IC) engines. The demand for transport energy is large and continuously increasing across the globe. Though there are few alternative options emerging that may eliminate the IC engine, they are in a developing stage, meaning the burden of transportation has to be borne by IC engines until at least the near future. Hence, IC engines continue to be the prime mechanism to sustain transportation in general. However, the scarcity of fossil fuels and its rising prices have forced nations to look for alternate fuels. Biodiesel has been emerged as the replacement of diesel as fuel for diesel engines. The use of biodiesel in the existing diesel engine is not that efficient when it is compared with diesel run engine. Therefore, the biodiesel engine must be suitably improved in its design and developments pertaining to the intake manifold, fuel injection system, combustion chamber and exhaust manifold to get the maximum...
