April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: circulating current reduction, distributed PV panels, modular multilevel converter, photovoltaic power systems, pulse width modulation.
A new topology has been recently proposed for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems, using modular multilevel converters (MMCs) and distributing PV panels throughout the MMC cells. This topology has two main advantages: it reduces the power losses related to moving the energy into the MMC capacitors from an external source, and it removes the losses and costs related to the DC to DC converters used to track the maximum power point on string converters or central converters, because that task is delegated to MMC cells. However, traditional pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have many problems when dealing with this application: the distortion at the output increases to unacceptable values when MMC cells target different voltages. This paper proposes a new modulation technique for MMCs with different cell voltages, taking into account the measured cell voltages to generate switching sequences with more accurate timing. It also adapts the modulator sampling period to improve the t... [more]

Keywords: analytical model, chamber, impulse turbine, oscillating water column, wave-to-wire, waves.
Oscillating water column (OWC) systems are among the most credited solutions for an effective conversion of the notable energy potential conveyed by sea waves. Despite a renewed interest, however, they are often still at a demonstration phase and additional research is required to reach industrial maturity. Within this framework, this study provides a wave-to-wire model for OWC systems based on an impulse air turbine. The model performs a comprehensive simulation of the system to estimate the attendant electric energy production for a specific sea state, based on analytical models of the primary (fixed chamber) and secondary (air turbine) converters coupled with the tertiary converter (electric generator). A rigid piston model is proposed to solve the hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, and hydrodynamics of the chamber, in a coupled fashion with the impulse turbine aerodynamics. This is solved with a novel method by considering the cascades as sets of blades, each one consisting of a finite... [more]

Shi-Yi Song, Hong Leng.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent-based model, energy use behavior, energy use intensity, residential building energy consumption, scenario simulation, severe cold cities.
Accurate simulation and prediction of occupants’ energy use behavior are crucial in building energy consumption research. However, few studies have focused on household energy use behavior in severely cold regions that have unique energy use patterns because of the low demand of cooling in summer and the use of central heating system in winter. Thus, we developed an agent-based model to simulate the household electricity use behavior in severely cold regions, according to data for Harbin, China. The model regards apartments, residents, household appliances, and energy-management departments as agents and generates the household electricity consumption with respect to time, temperature, and energy-saving events. The simulation parameters include basic information of the residents, their energy-saving awareness, their appliance use behaviors, and the impact of energy-saving management. Electricity use patterns are described by decision-making mechanisms and probabilities obtained through... [more]

Keywords: geothermal system, hydrochemical indicators, hydrogeochemical modelling, hydrogeochemistry, Podhale Trough.
The most promising Polish region in terms of its geothermal resource potential is the Podhale Trough in the Inner West Carpathians, where the thermal water occurs in the Eocene-Mesozoic strata. The origin and conditions of formation of the chemical composition of the thermal water are different in a regional scale due to the impact of infiltrating water on the chemical compounds present in nearby thermal intakes, chemical processes responsible for the concentration of major elements and residence time. The article presents the regional conceptual model in regard to the factors controlling the chemistry of thermal water from Podhale Trough and the conditions of its exchange. It was allowed by performing the hydrogeochemical characteristics of studied water and analyzing its changes according to flow direction from HCO3-Ca-Mg type to SO4-Cl-Na-Ca and SO4-Ca-Mg types. The hydrogeochemical modelling was also made allowing identification of the impact of reservoir rocks on the formation of... [more]
Effects of Cyber Attacks on AC and High-Voltage DC Interconnected Power Systems with Emulated Inertia
Kaikai Pan, Jingwei Dong, Elyas Rakhshani, Peter Palensky.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC/HVDC interconnections, attack impact, Denial of Service, false data injection, load frequency control, virtual inertia.
The high penetration of renewable energy resources and power electronic-based components has led to a low-inertia power grid which would bring challenges to system operations. The new model of load frequency control (LFC) must be able to handle the modern scenario where controlled areas are interconnected by parallel AC/HVDC links and storage devices are added to provide virtual inertia. Notably, vulnerabilities within the communication channels for wide-area data exchange in LFC loops may make them exposed to various cyber attacks, while it still remains largely unexplored how the new LFC in the AC/HVDC interconnected system with emulated inertia would be affected under malicious intrusions. Thus, in this article, we are motivated to explore possible effects of the major types of data availability and integrity attacks—Denial of Service (DoS) and false data injection (FDI) attacks—on such a new LFC system. By using a system-theoretic approach, we explore the optimal strategies that at... [more]

The future of business development relies on the effective management of risks, opportunities, and energy and water resources. Here, we evaluate the application of best practices to identify, analyze, address, monitor, and control risks and opportunities (R/O) according to ISO 31000 and 50000. Furthermore, we shed light on tools, templates, ISO guides, and international documents that contribute to classifying, identifying, formulating control, and managing R/O parameterization in a comprehensive management system model, namely CMS QHSE3+, which consists of quality (Q), health and safety (HS), environmental management (E), energy efficiency (E2), and other risk components (+) that include comprehensive biosecurity and biosafety. By focusing on the deployment of R/O-based thinking (ROBT) at strategic and operational levels, we show vulnerability reduction in CMS QHSE3+ by managing energy, efficiency, and sustainability.
Energy Saving through Efficient BOG Prediction and Impact of Static Boil-off-Rate in Full Containment-Type LNG Storage Tank
Mohd Shariq Khan, Muhammad Abdul Qyyum, Wahid Ali, Aref Wazwaz, Khursheed B. Ansari, Moonyong Lee.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BOG, BOR, liquefaction, LNG storage tank, Natural Gas, regasification.
Boil-off gas (BOG) from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank depends on the amount of heat leakage however, its assessment often relies on the static value of the boil-off rate (BOR) suggested by the LNG tank vendors that over/under predicts BOG generation. Thus, the impact of static BOR on BOG predictions is investigated and the results suggest that BOR is a strong function of liquid level in a tank. Total heat leakage in a tank practically remains constant, nonetheless the unequal distribution of heat in vapor and liquid gives variation in BOR. Assigning the total tank heat leak to the liquid is inappropriate since a part of heat increases vapor temperature. At the lower liquid level, BOG is under-predicted and at a higher level, it is over-predicted using static BOR. Simulation results show that BOR varies from 0.012 wt% per day for an 80% tank fill to 0.12 wt% per day at 10% tank fill.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: aqueous supercapacitor, capacitive performance, electrochemical energy storage, functionalised nanomaterials, nitrogen and oxygen co-doping.
In this study, RF-based un-doped and nitrogen-doped aerogels were produced by polymerisation reaction between resorcinol and formaldehyde with sodium carbonate as catalyst and melamine as the nitrogen source. Carbon/activated carbon aerogels were obtained by carbonisation of the gels under inert atmosphere (Ar) followed by activation of the carbons under CO2 at 800 °C. The BET analysis of the samples showed a more than two-fold increase in the specific Surf. area and pore volume of carbon from 537 to 1333 m2g−1 and 0.242 to 0.671 cm3g−1 respectively after nitrogen doping and activation. SEM and XRD analysis of the samples revealed highly porous amorphous nanostructures with denser inter-particle cross-linked pathways for the activated nitrogen-doped carbon. The X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the presence of nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms on the Surf. and within the carbon matrix where improvement in wettability with the drop in the contact angle from 123° to... Keywords: asset management, electronic voltage transformer, measurement accuracy, online evaluation, recursive principal components analysis.
The electronic voltage transformer (EVT) has received much attention with the recent global trend to establish smart grids and digital substations. One of the main issues of the EVT is the deterioration of its performance with long-term operation which affects the control and protection systems it is employed for and hence the overall reliability of the power grids. This calls for the essential need for a reliable technique to regularly assess the accuracy of operating EVT in real-time. Unfortunately, traditional calibration methods cannot detect the incipient EVT performance change in real-time. As such, this paper presents a new online method to evaluate the accuracy of the EVT. In this regard, the Q-statistic is calculated based on the recursive principal components analysis (RPCA) using the output data of EVT to map up the changes of metering error on the electric−physics relationship. By employing the output data of the EVT along with the power grid characteristics, the performanc... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: active coil, automotive, electric vehicle (EV), electromagnetic compatibility, magnetic field, near field, shielding, wireless power transfer (WPT).
This study deals with the optimization of a shielding structure composed by multiple active coils for mitigating the magnetic field in an automotive wireless power transfer (WPT) system at 85 kHz. Each active coil is independently powered and the most suitable excitation is obtained by an optimization procedure based on the Gradient Descent algorithm. The proposed procedure is described and applied to shield the magnetic field beside an electric vehicle (EV) equipped with SAE standard coils, during wireless charging. The obtained results show that the magnetic field in the most critical area is significantly reduced (i.e., approximately halved) with a very limited influence on the electrical performances (i.e., WPT efficiency decreases by less than 1 percentage point compared to the case without active shielding).

Quinn Daigle, Paul G. O’Brien.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy, luminescent solar concentrators, Newton’s law of cooling, semi-transparent, solar energy, solar windows.
Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are a promising technology for integration and renewable energy generation in buildings because they are inexpensive, lightweight, aesthetically versatile, can concentrate both direct and diffuse light and offer wavelength-selective transparency. LSCs have been extensively investigated for applications involving photovoltaic electricity generation. However, little work has been done to investigate the use of thermal energy generated at the edges of LSCs, despite the potential for harnessing a broad range of solar thermal energy. In this work, Newton’s law of cooling is used to measure the thermal power generated at the edge of LSC modules subjected to solar-simulated radiation. Results show that the dye in single-panel LSC modules can generate 17.9 W/m2 under solar-simulated radiation with an intensity of 23.95 mW/cm2 over the spectral region from 360 to 1000 nm. Assuming a mean daily insolation of 5 kWh/m2, the dye in the single-panel LSC modules... [more]

Keywords: 3 kV DC railway traction, dual active bridge dc-dc converter, electric multiple unit, power electronic traction transformer, silicon carbide.
The design of rolling stock plays a key role in the attractiveness of the rail transport. Train design must strictly meet the requirements of rail operators to ensure high quality and cost-effective services. Semiconductor power devices made from silicon carbide (SiC) have reached a level of technology enabling their widespread use in traction power converters. SiC transistors offering energy savings, quieter operation, improved reliability and reduced maintenance costs have become the choice for the next-generation railway power converters and are quickly replacing the IGBT technology which has been used for decades. The paper describes the design and development of a novel SiC-based DC power electronic traction transformer (PETT) intended for electric multiple units (EMUs) operated in 3 kV DC rail traction. The details related to the 0.5 MVA peak power medium voltage prototype, including the electrical design of the main building blocks are presented in the first part of the paper. T... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electron transport layers, interface engineering, perovskite, solar cells.
Organic−inorganic perovskites are crystalline light absorbers which are gaining great attraction from the photovoltaic community. Surprisingly, the power conversion efficiencies of these perovskite solar cells have rapidly increased by over 25% in 2019, which is comparable to silicon solar cells. Despite the many advances in efficiency, there are still many areas to be improved to increase the efficiency and stability of commercialization. For commercialization and enhancement of applicability, the development of electron transport layer (ETL) and its interface for low temperature processes and efficient charge transfer are very important. In particular, understanding the ETL and its interface is of utmost importance, and when this understanding has been made enough, excellent research results have been published that can improve the efficiency and stability of the device. Here, we review the progress of perovskite solar cells. Especially we discuss recent important development of pero... [more]
Space Charge Accumulation Characteristics in HVDC Cable under Temperature Gradient

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bipolar charge transport (BCT) model, conductivity model, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), HVDC cable, pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA), space charge, temperature gradient (TG).
One of the main issues that affect the development of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable insulation is the accumulation of space charge. The load operation of an HVDC cable leads to the formation of a radially distributed temperature gradient (TG) across the insulation. In this study, the space charge accumulation in a cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable is measured under a DC electric field and TG using the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method, and the effect of the TG on the space charge behavior is investigated. In addition, the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model and the conductivity model based on an improved cylindrical geometry are used to simulate the charge behavior in the HVDC XLPE cable under TG, and the experimental and simulated results are compared. The results show that the higher temperature of the cable conductor promotes the accumulation of homocharge near the side of high temperature. Additionally, with the increase of the TG, not only does more heterocharg... [more]
A Preliminary Assessment of the Potential of Low Percentage Green Hydrogen Blending in the Italian Natural Gas Network
Marco Pellegrini, Alessandro Guzzini, Cesare Saccani.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen and compressed natural gas, hydrogen blending, hydrogen strategy, natural gas networks, power-to-hydrogen, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The growing rate of electricity generation from renewables is leading to new operational and management issues on the power grid because the electricity generated exceeds local requirements and the transportation or storage capacities are inadequate. An interesting option that is under investigation by several years is the opportunity to use the renewable electricity surplus to power electrolyzers that split water into its component parts, with the hydrogen being directly injected into natural gas pipelines for both storage and transportation. This innovative approach merges together the concepts of (i) renewable power-to-hydrogen (P2H) and of (ii) hydrogen blending into natural gas networks. The combination of renewable P2H and hydrogen blending into natural gas networks has a huge potential in terms of environmental and social benefits, but it is still facing several barriers that are technological, economic, legislative. In the framework of the new hydrogen strategy for a climate-ne... [more]

Keywords: ammonia borane, boron nitride, hydrogen storage, hydrogenation, milling, nuclear magnetic resonance.
“One-pot regeneration”, which is simple regneneration method of ammonia borane (AB) using hydrazine and liquid ammonia, enables conversion of AB from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) after milling hydrogenation. Solution 11B-NMR revealed the presence of AB after NH3/N2H4 treatment of milled h-BN (BNH) although the yield of AB was less than 5%. The conversion mechanism was clarified as B-H bonds on the h-BN surface created by ball-milling under hydrogen pressure have an ability to form AB, which was confirmed by Thermogravimetry-Residual Gas Analysis (TG-RGA) and Infrared (IR) analysis. The reaction routes are also the same as regeneration route of polyborazylene because intermediates of AB such as (B(NH2)3 and hydrazine borane were found by solution 11B-NMR after soaking BNH in liquid NH3 and hydrazine, respectively. Because of the fact that all reactions proceed on the h-BN surface and no reaction proceeds when neat h-BN is treated, breaking of B3N3 ring structure and then creation of B... [more]
Laboratory Measurements of the Relative Permeability of Coal: A Review

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Coal, coalbed methane, gas, laboratory experiments, measurement method, measurement technique, relative permeability, Water.
The relative permeability of coal to gas and water is an essential parameter for characterizing coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs and predicting coal seam gas production, particularly in numerical simulations. Although a variety of studies related to the relative permeability of coals have been conducted, the results hardly meet the needs of practical engineering applications. To track the dynamic development of relative permeability measurements in the laboratory, discover the deficiencies, and discuss further work in this field, this paper investigates the relative permeability measurement preparation work and laboratory methods and summarizes the development of techniques used to determine the water saturation during experimentation. The previously determined relative permeability curves are also assembled and classified according to coal rank and the absolute permeability. It is found that the general operations in the relative permeability measurement process are still not standard... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: numerical modeling, rock mass properties, rock mass stability.
Rock mass is a medium created through processes that have lasted over four billion years, and its intrinsic feature is the variability of the parameters that describe it. A particularly high variability of mechanical parameters is observed in Carboniferous sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The mechanical properties, especially the rock mass strength, are essential for the design and maintenance of the stability of excavations conducted in it and for the safe conduct of mining operations. This article presents the test results confirming the random variability of the mechanical parameters of the rock mass. The second part of the article presents the results of numerical simulations mapping the Carboniferous rock mass along with a 1000 m deep tunnel excavation protected by steel arch supports. Numerical simulations were carried out for models with different variability coefficients of strength and deformation parameters, and the obtained results were analyzed in terms of damage zones an... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud, cloud motion vector, forecast, PV, satellite, solar, weather regime.
The worldwide growing development of PV capacity requires an accurate forecast for a safer and cheaper PV grid penetration. Solar energy variability mainly depends on cloud cover evolution. Thus, relationships between weather variables and forecast uncertainties may be quantified to optimize forecast use. An intraday solar energy forecast algorithm using satellite images is fully described and validated over three years in the Paris (France) area. For all tested horizons (up to 6 h), the method shows a positive forecast skill score compared to persistence (up to 15%) and numerical weather predictions (between 20% and 40%). Different variables, such as the clear-sky index (Kc), solar zenith angle (SZA), surrounding cloud pattern observed by satellites and northern Atlantic weather regimes have been tested as predictors for this forecast method. Results highlighted an increasing absolute error with a decreasing SZA and Kc. Root mean square error (RMSE) is significantly affected by the me... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque, ferrite PM, finite element analysis, flux reversal machine, non-rare earth, wind energy.
Currently, there is increasing research interest in harnessing wind energy for power generation by means of non-conventional electrical machines e.g., flux-reversal machines. The flux reversal machine is usually designed using scarce rare−earth permanent magnet material which may be unattractive in terms of machine cost. In this study, an attempt is made to re-design the flux reversal machine with non-rare-earth ferrite permanent magnet for wind energy applications. Because these machines possess high cogging torque, which results in vibration and noise, that are detrimental to the machine performance, especially at low speeds, a novel combined skewed and circumferential rotor pole pairing method is developed. The proposed cogging torque reduction method is implemented in 2-dimensional finite element analysis modeling and comparatively analyzed with other existing stand-alone methods viz., skewing, and rotor pole pairing. The results show that the proposed method led to 94.8% and 71% r... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Delayed DES, H-Darrieus, micro wind power generation, VAWT.
The simulation of very small vertical axis wind turbines is often a complex task due to the very low Reynolds number effects and the strong unsteadiness related to the rotor operation. Moreover, the high boundary layer instabilities, which affect these turbines, strongly limits their efficiency compared to micro horizontal axis wind turbines. However, as the scientific interest toward micro wind turbine power generation is growing for powering small stand-alone devices, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs)might be very suitable for this kind of application as well. Furthermore, micro wind turbines are widely used for wind tunnel testing, as the wind tunnel dimensions are usually quite limited. In order to obtain a better comprehension of the fluid dynamics of such micro rotors, in the present paper the authors demonstrate how to develop an accurate CFD 2D model of a micro H-Darrieus wind turbine, inherently characterized by highly unstable operating conditions. The rotor was tested in t... [more]
Energy-Efficient Autonomous Navigation of Solar-Powered UAVs for Surveillance of Mobile Ground Targets in Urban Environments

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: applications of solar powered vehicles, autonomous systems, control of electric vehicles, dynamic coverage, energy-efficient UAV navigation, rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT), sensing coverage, solar-powered UAVs, surveillance and monitoring, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
In this paper, we consider the navigation of a group of solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for periodical monitoring of a set of mobile ground targets in urban environments. We consider the scenario where the number of targets is larger than that of the UAVs, and the targets spread in the environment, so that the UAVs need to carry out a periodical surveillance. The existence of tall buildings in urban environments brings new challenges to the periodical surveillance mission. They may not only block the Line-of-Sight (LoS) between a UAV and a target, but also create some shadow region, so that the surveillance may become invalid, and the UAV may not be able to harvest energy from the sun. The periodical surveillance problem is formulated as an optimization problem to minimize the target revisit time while accounting for the impact of the urban environment. A nearest neighbour based navigation method is proposed to guide the movements of the UAVs. Moreover, we adopt a partiti... [more]

The paper justifies the validity of analyzing the impact of temperature and the process of partial demagnetization of magnets on the operating parameters of machines. To analyze this impact, a field model of coupled electromagnetic and thermal phenomena in a permanent magnet synchronous motor was proposed. The non-linearity of the magnetic circuit, the effect of temperature on the magnetic, electrical and thermal properties of the materials as well as the developed method of modeling the process of partial demagnetization of the magnet were taken into account. Based on this model, an algorithm and software were developed to analyze the effect of temperature and the process of partial demagnetization of magnets on the work of the line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). The elaborated software was used to study the effect of temperature during the motor starting phase on the magnetization state of the magnets after the start-up process. The calculation results were compar... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat accumulator, heat transfer coefficient on solidification front, overheated liquid, phase change material (PCM), solidification in an annular space.
In this study, the process of the solidification of a PCM (phase change material) liquid in an annular space was analytically investigated with the use of a simplified quasi-steady-state model. This model described the phase change phenomenon with the cylindrical solidification front and with the solidification liquid overheated above the solidification temperature. One of the important novelties of the applied model was the determination of the coefficient of the heat transfer between the liquid and the solidified layer on the solidification surface, which was calculated as a function of the location of the solidification front. A method for calculating the variable coefficient of heat transfer on the surface of the solidification front during the solidification process is presented. The contact layer between the cold wall and the solidified layer was incorporated into the model and played an important role. The theoretical analytical method describing the solidification process based... [more]

Keywords: active vehicle suspension, hydraulic actuator, optimal controller, sliding mode controller.
In the paper authors consider the active suspension of the wheeled vehicle. The proposed controller consists of a sliding mode controller used to roll reduction and linear regulators with quadratic performance index (LQRs) for struts control was shown. The energy consumption optimization was taken into account at the stage of strut controllers synthesis. The studied system is half of the active vehicle suspension using hydraulic actuators to increase the ride comfort and keeping safety. Instead of installing additional actuators in the form of active anti-roll bars, it has been decided to expand the active suspension control algorithm by adding extra functionality that accounts for the roll. The suggested algorithm synthesis method is based on the object decomposition into two subsystems whose controllers can be synthesized separately. Individual suspension struts are controlled by actuators that use the controllers whose parameters have been calculated with the LQR method. The mathema... [more]
