April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical membrane degradation, fuel cell, Modelling, PEMFC, perfluorinated sulfonic acid membrane, reactive oxygen species, sensitivity analysis
The chemical degradation of the perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ion-exchange membrane as a result of an attack from a radical species, originating as a by-product of the oxygen reduction reaction, represents a significant limiting factor in a wider adoption of low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (LT-PEMFCs). The efficient mathematical modeling of these processes is therefore a crucial step in the further development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Starting with an extensive kinetic modeling framework, describing the whole range of chemical processes leading to the membrane degradation, we use the mathematical method of sensitivity analysis to systematically reduce the number of both chemical species and reactions needed to efficiently and accurately describe the chemical degradation of the membrane. The analysis suggests the elimination of chemical reactions among the radical species, which is supported by the physicochemical consideration of the modeled rea... [more]

During the past few decades, there has been significant growth in the renewable energy market because of increased concern over global warming and the continuous depletion of fossil fuel resources. There is a promising solar thermal technology that utilizes low-temperature heat to generate electricity. The conversion process of thermal energy to electricity is based on the principle of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). This study investigated a novel islanded hybrid power system consisting of an ORC low temperature solar thermal system, wind (WTG), diesel generation (DEG) set, and combined application of an energy storage system (ESS), such as a battery (BESS), super magnetic energy storage (SMES), and an ultracapacitor (UC) unit. Furthermore, the hybrid system was employed with a single controller (one of proportional-integral (PI), PI with derivative (PID), two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) PI, and 2DOF PID controllers) with proportionate gains to the DEG, and the ESS, which is another uniq... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: axial flux, demagnetization, finite element analysis, permanent magnet, static eccentricity, synchronous generator
This article investigates the combined partial demagnetization and static eccentricity fault in an Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) Synchronous Generator. The machine is simulated using 3D FEM, while the EMF spectrum is analyzed in order to export the fault related harmonics using the FFT analysis. Firstly, the partial demagnetization fault, without the coexistence of eccentricity, and both the static angular and axis eccentricity faults, without the coexistence of partial demagnetization, are studied. In the case of eccentricity fault, the phase EMF sum spectrum has also been used as a diagnostic mean, because, when only eccentricity fault exists in the generator (either angular or axis) new harmonics do not appear in the EMF spectrum. Secondly the combination of partial demagnetization fault with static axis and static angular eccentricity is investigated and different comparisons are made when the demagnetization and the eccentricity level changes. The investigation revealed that... [more]

Keywords: concentrated solar power, finite element analysis, laser scanning, parabolic trough collector, quality control, shape measurement, three-dimensional digitization
In concentrated solar power technology, the precise shape of the reflective surfaces is crucial for efficiency. Considering the geometry and size of a parabolic trough collector, measuring the actual shape is not trivial and some techniques can only be adopted during the assembly operations, evaluating only the manufacturing and alignment processes. The method proposed and tested in this work exploits a laser scanner-based three-dimensional digitization technique that can be used without any marker or other tools, and is attached to the structure. This technique is particularly suitable for assessing the behavior and the optical efficiency of the collectors under load and for validating a finite element model of the structure. The method defines the shape of the parabolic surface by collecting a 3D point cloud of the parabolic surface using a laser scanner. The measured form can then be compared with the ideal shape obtained from a finite element analysis of the structure subject to th... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency modulation, maximum power point tracking, SEPIC converter, triangular current mode, zero voltage switching
This paper proposes a single-stage single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) converter circuit, which is applied to the organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) driver circuit. The circuit proposed in this paper replaces the output Schottky diode from the original SEPIC with a power switch. Deadtime is added to prevent the on-state overlapping of two switches with zero voltage switching (ZVS), and the circuit operates in triangular current mode. The digital control methods are maximum power point tracking and frequency modulation using a battery to supply the converter and illuminate the OLED at night. Finally, a prototype is implemented to show the feasibility under the DC input voltage range of 10−40 V. The DC output is 12 V/1 A/12 W, and the conversion efficiency is up to 96.3%.

Keywords: modular three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), finite element analysis, mutual inductances, predictive torque control
In this study, a novel modular three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed for low-voltage high power applications. The proposed modular three-phase PMSM has an independent segregated three-phase winding configuration, facilitating the implementation of the control algorithm. Firstly, on the basis of the electromagnetic properties, the mathematical model of the modular three-phase PMSM is established, considering the asymmetrical mutual inductances investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). Then, the predictive torque control (PTC) method combining the inductance characteristics of modular three-phase PMSM is developed, and excellent performance is obtained by adjusting the stator flux and torque. Finally, simulation and experiment are performed, and the results show that the proposed novel modular three-phase PMSM with the PTC method exhibits excellent control performance, and small stator current total harmonic distortion (THD).

Keywords: design science research, energy efficiency management, energy use efficiency, pilot implementation
In the era of expensive energy carriers and care for the climate, companies are keen to take action towards bolstering energy efficiency. Businesses often lack data on actual energy consumption to date, are rarely equipped with adequate analytical tools, and do not have the know-how regarding the transition itself. Developing energy efficiency management (EEM) for a given enterprise requires many steps, which ultimately unleash analytical potential and seamlessly integrate the EEM framework with the business model of a given company. This study scrutinizes and formalizes a reference process of pilot EEM implementation that involves external business partners in a multi-facility organization. The process is tailored to the specificity of the company’s operations as well as its technical and management capabilities regarding energy efficiency. The proposed approach, phased in time and involving multiple stakeholders, should be especially useful for practitioners running EEM-related proje... [more]

Keywords: H2 production, photocatalyst, sonochemical coprecipitation, ZnxCd1−xS
A simple ultrasonic radiation method was employed for the preparation of zinc and cadmium sulfide solid solution (ZnxCd1−xS; x = 0−0.25 wt.%) with the aim to investigate its efficiency for H2 production via a visible light-driven water-splitting reaction. The catalyst characterization by X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of solid solution (ZnxCd1−xS) between CdS and ZnS phases. All catalysts exhibited hierarchical morphology (from SEM and TEM) formed by aggregated nanoparticles of ZnxCd1−xS solid solution with crystals showing mainly (111) planes of cubic CdS phase. The crystal size linearly decreased with an increase in Zn incorporation in the crystal lattice (from 4.37 nm to 3.72 nm). The ZnxCd1−xS photocatalysts showed a gradual increase in the H2 evolution, with an increase in the Zn concentration up to 0.2 wt.% making the most effective Zn0.2Cd0.8S catalyst toward H2 production. From the catalyst activity−structure correlation, it has been concluded that the twin-like CdS... [more]

Keywords: covalent organic frameworks, dye-sensitized solar cells, emerging photovoltaics, metal organic frameworks, perovskite solar cells
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are two innovative classes of porous coordination polymers. MOFs are three-dimensional materials made up of secondary building blocks comprised of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands whereas COFs are 2D or 3D highly porous organic solids made up by light elements (i.e., H, B, C, N, O). Both MOFs and COFs, being highly conjugated scaffolds, are very promising as photoactive materials for applications in photocatalysis and artificial photosynthesis because of their tunable electronic properties, high surface area, remarkable light and thermal stability, easy and relative low-cost synthesis, and structural versatility. These properties make them perfectly suitable for photovoltaic application: throughout this review, we summarize recent advances in the employment of both MOFs and COFs in emerging photovoltaics, namely dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) organic photovoltaic (OPV) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs). April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: commercial and public services, Energy Efficiency, GHG mitigation, residential, solar energy
The residential, commercial, and public sectors consume between 20% and 30% of final energy demand worldwide. Due to the intensive use of fossil fuels and conventional electricity, they also have an important participation in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Taking Mexico as a case study, this article develops an alternative scenario that considers that in these sectors, buildings can generate energy for self-consumption or to supply it to the power network—for which four solar energy options are analyzed. In addition, to manage and rationalize the energy demand of these buildings, eight energy efficiency measures are studied. These options were selected on the basis that they are technically and economically feasible to implement in buildings in Mexico. The results reveal that by 2030, in relation to the GHG trend scenario, this mitigation scenario reduces 23.5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in the residential (19 MtCO2e), commercial (2.6 MtCO2e), and public... Keywords: compression gain, computational complexity, coulomb counting, curve fitting, estimation error, event-driven processing, Li-ion battery, open circuit voltage, state of charge
Lithium-ion batteries are deployed in a range of modern applications. Their utilization is evolving with the aim of achieving a greener environment. Batteries are costly, and battery management systems (BMSs) ensure long life and proper battery utilization. Modern BMSs are complex and cause a notable overhead consumption on batteries. In this paper, the time-varying aspect of battery parameters is used to reduce the power consumption overhead of BMSs. The aim is to use event-driven processing to realize effective BMSs. Unlike the conventional approach, parameters of battery cells, such as voltages and currents, are no longer regularly measured at a predefined time step and are instead recorded on the basis of events. This renders a considerable real-time compression. An inventive event-driven coulomb counting method is then presented, which employs the irregularly sampled data information for an effective online state of charge (SOC) determination. A high energy battery model for elect... [more]

Keywords: electricity consumption, electricity theft detection, electricity thefts, imbalanced data, smart grids, smart meter
Electricity is widely used around 80% of the world. Electricity theft has dangerous effects on utilities in terms of power efficiency and costs billions of dollars per annum. The enhancement of the traditional grids gave rise to smart grids that enable one to resolve the dilemma of electricity theft detection (ETD) using an extensive amount of data formulated by smart meters. This data are used by power utilities to examine the consumption behaviors of consumers and to decide whether the consumer is an electricity thief or benign. However, the traditional data-driven methods for ETD have poor detection performances due to the high-dimensional imbalanced data and their limited ETD capability. In this paper, we present a new class balancing mechanism based on the interquartile minority oversampling technique and a combined ETD model to overcome the shortcomings of conventional approaches. The combined ETD model is composed of long short-term memory (LSTM), UNet and adaptive boosting (Ada... [more]

Keywords: axial engines, downsizing, downspeeding, multifuel potential, opposed piston engine, uniflow scavenging, variable compression ratio, variable valve timing, wobble plate
Recent announcements regarding the phase out of internal combustion engines indicate the need to make major changes in the automotive industry. Bearing in mind this innovation trend, the article proposes a new approach to the engine design. The aim of this paper is to shed a new light on the forgotten concept of axial engines with wobble plate mechanism. One of their most important advantages is the ease of use of the opposed piston layout, which has recently received much attention. Based on several years of research, the features determining the increase in mechanical efficiency, lower heat losses and the best scavenging efficiency were indicated. Thanks to the applied Variable Compression Ratio (VCR), Variable Angle Shift (VAS) and Variable Port Area (VPA) systems, the engine can operate on various fuels in each of the Spark Ignition (SI), Compression Ignition (CI) and Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI)/Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI) modes. Curing minor leaks and restoring the integrity of a wellbore in a safe and economical way is always challenging in oil and gas production. In this work, a composite pressure-activated sealant, combined with liquid and solid sealing materials, was prepared via the demulsification approach. The structure, morphology, and size distribution of key particulates in the sealant were examined, and the in-situ self-adaptive sealing property was examined with a specially design dynamic sealing detector. The results indicated that the pressure-activated sealant was a multi-dispersed phase system, and the dispersed colloid particles were regular in shape and had a narrow size distribution of 300−400 μm. The solid sealing materials were introduced to construct a composite pressure-activated sealant, and the sealing capability can be markedly reinforced by cooperativity of liquid and solid sealing materials. A mechanochemical coupling model was put forward to rationalize the dynamic sealing process.... [more]

Keywords: optical diagnostics, switching arc, vacuum interrupter
The influence of initiation behavior of the drawn arc on the arc motion, on arc characteristics during the active phase, as well as on the post-arc parameters, was studied. The study was focused on arc dynamics, determination of the anode surface temperature after current interruption, and diagnostics of metal vapor density after current zero crossing. Different optical diagnostics, namely high-speed camera video enhanced by narrow-band optical filters, near infrared spectroscopy, and optical absorption spectroscopy was applied. The initiation behavior of the drawn arc had a clear influence on arc parameters. Higher local electrode temperature occurs in case of the electrodes with ignition point near the outer electrode boundary. This further causes an enhanced density of chromium vapor, even in cases with lower arc duration. The results of this study are important for design development of switching RMF contacts for future green energy applications.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deterministic prediction, hybrid model, interval prediction, VMD, wind characteristic
In order to improve the prediction accuracy of wind speed, this paper proposes a hybrid wind speed prediction (WSP) method considering the fluctuation, randomness and nonlinear of wind, which can be applied to short-term deterministic and interval prediction. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) decomposes wind speed time series into nonlinear series Intrinsic mode function 1 (IMF1), stationary time series IMF2 and error sreies (ER). Principal component analysis-Radial basis function (PCA-RBF) model is used to model the nonlinear series IMF1, where PCA is applied to reduce the redundant information. Long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to establish a stationary time series model for IMF2, which can better describe the fluctuation trend of wind speed; mixture Gaussian process regression (MGPR) is used to predict ER to obtain deterministic and interval prediction results simultaneously. Finally, above methods are reconstructed to form VMD-PRBF-LSTM-MGPR which is the abbreviation of hybr... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle, fault-tolerant, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs), Model Predictive Control
A switching sequence model predictive direct torque control (MPDTC) of IPMSMs for EVs in switch open-circuit fault-tolerant mode is studied in this paper. Instead of selecting one space vector from the possible four space vectors, the proposed MPDTC method selects an optimized switching sequence from two well-designed switching sequences, including three space vectors, according to a new designed cost function of which the control objectives have been transferred to the dq-axes components of the stator flux-linkage under the maximum-torque-per-ampere control. The calculation method of the durations of the adopted space vectors in the optimized switching sequence is studied to realize the stator flux-linkage reference tracking. In addition, the capacitor voltage balance method, by injecting a dc offset to the current of fault phase, is given. Compared with the conventional MPDTC method, the complicated weighting factors designing process is avoided and the electromagnetic torque ripples... [more]

Predicting the energy needs of future water systems is important for coordinating long-term energy and water management plans, as both systems are interrelated. We use the case study of the Los Angeles City’s Department of Water and Power (LADWP), located in a densely populated, environmentally progressive, and water-poor region, to highlight the trade-offs and tensions that can occur in balancing priorities related to reliable water supply, energy demand for water and greenhouse gas emissions. The city is on its path to achieving higher fractions of local water supplies through the expansion of conservation, water recycling and stormwater capture to replace supply from imported water. We analyze scenarios to simulate a set of future local water supply adoption pathways under average and dry weather conditions, across business as usual and decarbonized grid scenarios. Our results demonstrate that an aggressive local water supply expansion could impact the geospatial distribution of ele... [more]

As renewable energy installation costs decrease and environmentally-friendly policies are progressively applied in many countries, distributed generation has emerged as the new archetype of energy generation and distribution. The design and economic feasibility of distributed generation systems is constrained by the operation of the microgrid, which has to consider the uncertainty of renewable energy sources, consumption habits and electricity market prices. In this paper, a mathematical model intended to optimize the design and economic feasibility of a microgrid is proposed. After a search in the state-of-the-art, weaknesses and strengths of existing models have been identified and taken into account for building the present model. The present model should be seen as a basis on which other models can be built upon, hence a complete definition of the different sub-models is stated: uncertainty modelling, optimization technique, physical constraints and regulatory framework. Keywords: Bayer and Hanck, bootstrap ARDL, CO2 emission, oil price, Turkey
The main objective of this research was to test the effect of oil prices, renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, and economic growth on Turkey’s carbon emissions by using three co-integration tests, namely, the newly-developed bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) testing technique as proposed by (McNown et al., 2018); the new approach involving the Bayer−Hanck (2013) combined co-integration test; and the H-J (2008) co-integration technique, which induces two dates of structural breaks. The autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), and fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) approaches were utilized to test the long-run interaction between the examined variables. The Granger causality (GC) analysis was utilized to investigate the direction of causality among the variables. The long-run coefficients of ARDL, DOLS, CCR, and FMOLS showed that the oil prices had a negative influence... [more]
