April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pump integration, Modified Energy Transfer Diagram, Pinch Analysis, retrofit
Heat pumps are the key technology to decarbonise thermal processes by upgrading industrial surplus heat using renewable electricity. Existing insight-based integration methods refer to the idealised Grand Composite Curve requiring the full exploitation of heat recovery potential but leave the question of how to deal with technical or economic limitations unanswered. In this work, a novel Heat Pump Bridge Analysis (HPBA) is introduced for practically targeting technical and economic heat pump potential by applying Coefficient of Performance curves into the Modified Energy Transfer Diagram (METD). Removing cross-Pinch violations and operating heat exchangers at minimum approach temperatures by combined application of Bridge Analysis increases the heat recovery rate and reduce the temperature lift to be pumped at the same time. The insight-based METD allows the individual matching of heat surpluses and deficits of individual streams with the capabilities and performance of different marke... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: automotive industry, efficiency, electric vehicles, fuel cell, Optimization
This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up, high efficiency, no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells, the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore, this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs, as this determines the cell losses, and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly, it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community, there is a need... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, energy management system, microgrid, networked microgrids, resilience, resilience enhancement
The increased intensity and frequency of natural disasters have attracted the attention of researchers in the power sector to enhance the resilience of power systems. Microgrids are considered as a potential solution to enhance the resilience of power systems using local resources, such as renewable energy sources, electric vehicles (EV), and energy storage systems. However, the deployment of an additional storage system for resilience can increase the investment cost. Therefore, in this study, the usage of existing EVs in microgrids is proposed as a solution to increase the resilience of microgrids with outages without the need for additional investment. In the case of contingencies, the proposed algorithm supplies energy to islanded microgrids from grid-connected microgrids by using mobile EVs. The process for the selection of EVs for supplying energy to islanded microgrids is carried out in three steps. Firstly, islanded and networked microgrids inform the central energy management... Lyapunov-Function-Based Controller for Single-Phase NPC Quasi-Z-Source Inverter with 2ω Frequency Ripple Suppression
Sertac Bayhan, Hasan Komurcugil
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-connected inverter, Lyapunov stability, nonlinear controller, proportional resonant control
This paper proposes a high-performance control technique based on Lyapunov’s stability theory for a single-phase grid-connected neutral-point-clamped quasi-impedance source inverter with LCL filter. The Lyapunov function based control is employed to regulate the inverter output current, whereas the proportional resonant controller is used to produce the reference of the inverter output current that is needed in the Lyapunov function based control. Use of proportional resonant controller ensures the zero steady-state error in the grid current. An important feature of the proposed Lyapunov function based control is the achievement of resonance damping without using a dedicated damping method. Furthermore, the modified simple boost control technique is proposed to eliminate the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source inductor currents and minimize the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source capacitor voltages. The proposed control technique consider... [more]

Keywords: clustering, consumer categorization, feature construction, load duration curve, load profiling, peak demand
This paper proposes a novel feature construction methodology aiming at both clustering yearly load profiles of low-voltage consumers, as well as investigating the stochastic nature of their peak demands. These load profiles describe the electricity consumption over a one-year period, allowing the study of seasonal dependence. The clustering of load curves has been extensively studied in literature, where clustering of daily or weekly load curves based on temporal features has received the most research attention. The proposed feature construction aims at generating a new set of variables that can be used in machine learning applications, stepping away from traditional, high dimensional, chronological feature sets. This paper presents a novel feature set based on two types of features: respectively the consumption time window on a daily and weekly basis, and the time of occurrence of peak demands. An analytic expression for the load duration curve is validated and leveraged in order to... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building energy management system, occupant behavior, Particle Swarm Optimization, passive cooling
The common approach to model occupants behaviors in buildings is deterministic and consists of assumptions based on predefined fixed schedules or rules. In contrast with the deterministic models, stochastic and agent based (AB) models are the most powerful and suitable methods for modeling complex systems as the human behavior. In this paper, a co-simulation architecture is proposed with the aim of modeling the occupant behavior in buildings by a stochastic-AB approach and implementing an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS). In particular, optimized control logics are designed for smart passive cooling by controlling natural ventilation and solar shading systems to guarantee the thermal comfort conditions and maintain energy performance. Moreover, the effects of occupant actions on indoor thermal comfort are also taken into account. This study shows how the integration of automation systems and passive techniques increases the potentialities of passive cooling in build... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: distorted voltage, finite element method, voltage transformers
Voltage transformers (VTs) are an important element of the measuring system that allows measuring the energy flow in medium and high voltage networks. Additional problems with the accuracy of the measurement introduced by the appearance of sources and nonlinear receivers cause deformation of the voltage shape in the energy system. Due to the high metrological requirements, the design of voltage transformers requires high accuracy (for class 0.2 ΔU ≤ 0.2, phase displacement ≤10 min), which is not possible with the use of analytical methods using approximate models. Therefore, only the application of numerical modeling by the finite element method, taking into account real three-dimensional phenomena, allows achieving high modeling accuracy. The article concerns the phenomenon of the influence of voltage higher harmonics of supply voltage on the accuracy (up to the 100th harmonic) of the measuring inductive voltage transformer (IVT). The applied modeling method takes into account the phe... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aspect ratio, contact stress, diffusion induced stress, electrochemical-mechanical modelling, Li-ion battery, shape factor
Electrochemical-mechanical modelling is a key issue to estimate the damage of active material, as direct measurements cannot be performed due to the particles nanoscale. The aim of this paper is to overcome the common assumptions of spherical and standalone particle, proposing a general approach that considers a parametrized particle shape and studying its influence on the mechanical stresses which arise in active material particles during battery operation. The shape considered is a set of ellipsoids with variable aspect ratio (elongation), which aims to approximate real active material particles. Active material particle is divided in two domains: non-contact domain and contact domain, whether contact with neighbouring particles affects stress distribution or not. Non-contact areas are affected by diffusion stress, caused by lithium concentration gradient inside particles. Contact areas are affected simultaneously by diffusion stress and contact stress, caused by contact with neighbo... [more]

Keywords: active power filters, frequency domain, modeling and simulation, Optimization, power losses, power quality
The paper is related to the problem of modeling and optimizing power systems supplying, among others, nonlinear loads. A software solution that allows the modeling and simulation of power systems in the frequency domain as well as the sizing and allocation of active power filters has been developed and presented. The basic assumptions for the software development followed by the models of power system components and the optimization assumptions have been described in the paper. On the basis of an example of a low-voltage network, an analysis of the selection of the number and allocation of active power filters was carried out in terms of minimizing losses and investment costs under the assumed conditions for voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) coefficients in the network nodes. The presented examples show that the appropriate software allows for an in-depth analysis of possible solutions and, furthermore, the selection of the optimal one for a specific case, depending on the adopte... Keywords: demand side management, grid-interactive efficient buildings, urban-scale energy modeling, valuation
Several companies, universities, and national laboratories are developing urban-scale energy modeling that allows the creation of a digital twin of buildings for the simulation and optimization of real-world, city-sized areas. Prior to simulation-based assessment, a baseline of savings for a set of utility-defined use cases was established to clarify the initial business case for specific energy efficient building technologies. In partnership with a municipal utility, 178,337 OpenStudio and EnergyPlus models of buildings in the utility’s 1400 km2 service area were created, simulated, and assessed with measures for quantifying energy, demand, cost, and emissions reductions of each building. The method of construction and assumptions behind these models is discussed, definitions of example measures are provided, and distribution of savings across the building stock is provided under a maximum technical adoption scenario.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: built environment, compact linear fresnel reflector, hybridization, levelized cost of heat
The present study evaluates the potential upgrade of a Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR) collector at the Cyprus Institute (CyI) with photovoltaics via the calculation of the Levelized Cost Of Heat (LCOH). For over 4 years the collector has been supplying heating and cooling to the Novel Technologies Laboratory (NTL) of the Cyprus Institute (CyI). Extensive measurements have been carried out both on the LFR and NTL to render real numbers in the computations. This hybridization would be undertaken with the installation of PV arrays under mirrors, so that the collector is able to either reflect direct radiation to the receiver to process heat or to produce electricity directly in the built environment. The main objective is the decrease of the LCOH of Linear Fresnel collectors, which hinders their wider deployment, while air conditioning demand is globally booming. The results show that the LCOH for a small LFR to supply air conditioning is high, c€25.2−30.1 per kWh, while the innovative PV... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, inverter-based generation, islanding detection, microgrid, non-detection zone, point of DG connection, VoI index
This article proposes a new passive islanding detection technique for inverter-based distributed generation (DG) in microgrids based on local synchrophasor measurements. The proposed method utilizes the voltage and current phasors measured at the DG connection point (point of connection, PoC). In this paper, the rate of change of voltages and the ratio of the voltage and current magnitudes (VoI index) at the PoC are monitored using micro-phasor measurement units. The developed local measurements based decentralized islanding detection technique is based on the VoI index in order to detect any kind of utility grid frequency fluctuations or oscillations and distinguishing them from islanding condition. The simulation studies confirm that the proposed scheme is accurate, robust, fast, and simple to implement for inverter-based DGs.

The Impact of the Coexistence of Methane Hazard and Rock-Bursts on the Safety of Works in Underground Hard Coal Mines
Justyna Swolkień, Nikodem Szlązak
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methane hazard, rock-burst, the safety of exploration
Several natural threats characterize hard coal mining in Poland. The coexistence of methane and rock-burst hazards lowers the safety level during exploration. The most dangerous are high-energy bumps, which might cause rock-burst. Additionally, created during exploitation, safety pillars, which protect openings, might be the reason for the formation of so-called gas traps. In this part, rock mass is usually not disturbed and methane in seams that form the safety pillars is not dangerous as long as they remain intact. Nevertheless, during a rock-burst, a sudden methane outflow can occur. Preventing the existing hazards increases mining costs, and employing inadequate measures threatens the employees’ lives and limbs. Using two longwalls as examples, the authors discuss the consequences of the two natural hazards’ coexistence. In the area of longwall H-4 in seam 409/4, a rock-burst caused a release of approximately 545,000 cubic meters of methane into the excavations, which tripled metha... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airflow network, airtightness, building exposure, climate data, performance simulation
Airtightness is nowadays one of the physical parameters which determine overall building energy performance. In a wide range of states, the upper limit for air change rate at a Pa (na), air permeability rate at a Pa (qa), or specific leakage rate at a Pa (wa) is determined by the formal regulations. It should be highlighted that airtightness requirements are mainly the same around the world, disregarding any site and climatic conditions. The main goal of the presented work was to reveal the effect of individual location and surrounding infiltration rate and heat demand. The analyses were done using numerical techniques and computational models of the three buildings developed and calibrated based on the blower door test results. The compared buildings characterize by a similar geometry but differ in the air change rate at 50 Pa (n50). Analyses done for different locations and levels of sheltering by surrounding elements allow the determination of the real effect of local conditions. Th... [more]

Keywords: recurrent neural network, SCADA data, smart grids, time series forecasting
The number of wind farms is increasing every year because many countries are turning their attention to renewable energy sources. Wind turbines are considered one of the best alternatives to produce clean energy. Most of the wind farms installed supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system in their turbines to monitor wind turbines and logged the information as time-series data. It demands a powerful information extraction process for analysis and prediction. In this research, we present a data analysis framework to visualize the collected data from the SCADA system and recurrent neural network-based variant long short-term memory (LSTM) based prediction. The data analysis is presented in cartesian, polar, and cylindrical coordinates to understand the wind and energy generation relationship. The four features: wind speed, direction, generated active power, and theoretical power are predicted and compared with state-of-the-art methods. The obtained results confirm the applica... [more]

Keywords: dependability model, internet of things, smart building, solar power
The Internet has been going through significant transformations and changing the world around us. We can also see the Internet to be used in many areas, for innumerable purposes, and, currently, it is even used by objects. This evolution leads to the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. This new concept can be defined as a system composed of storage resources, sensor devices, controllers, applications, and network infrastructure, in order to provide specific services to its users. Since IoT comprises heterogeneous components, the creation of these systems, the communication, and maintenance of their components became a complex task. In this paper, we present a dependability model to evaluate an IoT system. Amid different systems, we chose to assess availability in a smart building. The proposed models allow us to calculate estimations of other measures besides steady-state availability, such as reliability. Thus, it was possible to notice that there was no considerable gain of availabili... [more]

Keywords: data-driven model approach, deep neural network, old detached house, prediction of heating energy consumption
Neural network models are data-driven and are effective for predicting and interpreting nonlinear or unexplainable physical phenomena. This study collected building information and heating energy consumption data from 16,158 old houses, selected key input variables that affect the heating energy consumption based on the collected datasets, and developed a deep neural network (DNN) model that showed the highest accuracy for the prediction of heating energy consumption in an old house. As a result, 11 key input variables were selected, and an optimal DNN model was developed. This optimal DNN model showed the highest prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.961) when the number of hidden layers was five and the number of neurons was 22. When the optimal DNN model was applied for the standard model of low-income detached houses, the prediction accuracy (Cv(RMSE)) of the optimal DNN model, compared to the EnergyPlus calculation result, was 8.74%, which satisfied the ASHRAE standard sufficiently.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, explosion, fire, flame, flammability, halocarbons
Environmental considerations are motivating the adoption of low global warming potential refrigerants. Most of these are mildly flammable, i.e., A2L. Their susceptibility to ignition from various ignition sources is poorly understood, particularly for the stoichiometric and quiescent mixtures that are emphasized here. The viability of fifteen residential ignition sources to ignite four A2L refrigerants is considered. Tests are performed in a windowed chamber with a volume of 26 L. The refrigerants are R-32 (difluoromethane); R-452B (67% R-32, 26% R-1234yf, and 7% pentafluoroethane); R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene); and R-1234ze (1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene). Two types of ignition sources are confirmed here to be viable: a resistively heated wire at 740 °C and open flames. When the refrigerant concentration was increased slowly, candle flames and butane flames extinguished before initiating any large deflagrations. Eleven other sources were not viable: a smoldering cigarette, a but... [more]

Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, climate change, Coal, decarbonization, Nuclear, renewable, repowering, retrofit decarbonization
Out of 2 TWe of coal power plant capacity in operation globally today, more than half is less than 14 years old. Climate policy related to limiting CO2-emissions makes the longer-term operation of these plants untenable. In this study, we assess the spectrum of available options for the future of both equipment and jobs in the coal power sector by assessing the full scope of “retrofit decarbonization” options. Retrofit decarbonization is an umbrella term that includes adding carbon capture, fuel conversion, and the replacement of coal boilers with new low-carbon energy sources, in each case re-using as much of the existing equipment as economically practicable while reducing or eliminating emissions. This article explores this idea using the Polish coal power fleet as a case study. Retrofit decarbonization in Poland was shown to be most attractive using high-temperature small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) to replace coal boilers, which can lower upfront capital costs by ~28−35% and l... Genetic algorithms are used to parameter identification of the model of oscillatory processes in complicated motion transmission of electric drives containing long elastic shafts as systems of distributed mechanical parameters. Shaft equations are generated on the basis of a modified Hamilton−Ostrogradski principle, which serves as the foundation to analyse the lumped parameter system and distributed parameter system. They serve to compute basic functions of analytical mechanics of velocity continuum and rotational angles of shaft elements. It is demonstrated that the application of the distributed parameter method to multi-mass rotational systems, that contain long elastic elements and complicated control systems, is not always possible. The genetic algorithm is applied to determine the coefficients of approximation the system of Rotational Transmission with Elastic Shaft by equivalent differential equations. The fitness function is determined as least-square error. The obtained resul... [more]
