Different Scenarios for the National Transmission Grid, Considering the Extensive Use of On-Site Renewable Energy in the Mexican Housing Sector
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economical and environmental benefits, extensive use of on-site renewable-energy, national transmission and distribution grid
The Mexican national electricity transmission and distribution grid (SEN, initials in Spanish) is characterized by the high interconnection between its several electricity generation plants and the millions of final consumers throughout the country. This feature, which is seen first as an adequate transmission and distribution method for electricity between producer and consumer, has the inconvenience of being highly complex when renewable energy is introduced into the SEN. The random nature of renewable energy means that coordination between the producer and consumer is difficult; therefore, these energy sources are considered by the Mexican Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE, initials in Spanish) without priority in their generation and distribution. In this document, a solution for this is given by the consideration of on-site photovoltaic production in the Mexican residential sector, setting a straightforward relationship between production and consumption, neglecting the long-... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic environmental dispatch, flexibility, gas network, gas storage, integrated power-natural gas-heat energy systems, power to gas (P2G)
The low carbon transition requires the high growth of renewable generation penetration in energy systems to ultimately achieve net-zero carbon target. To ensure the reliable operation of energy systems with high intermittent renewable output, it is critical to have sufficient flexible resources to avoid curtailment. Therefore, the integrated power-natural gas-heating energy systems with power to gas (P2G) and gas storage has attracted great research interest especially on the combined operation method to enhance the flexibility provision between each other. In this paper, taking heating demand, P2G and gas storage into consideration, a multi-objective optimal operation strategy of integrated power-natural gas-heating energy systems is presented to obtain the maximum economic and environmental benefits. Furthermore, a novel model of flexibility metric is proposed based on redundant linepack and gas storage. Case studies without P2G and with P2G are carried out on integrated IEEE 39-bus... [more]

Development and Validation of a Latent Thermal Energy Storage Model Using Modelica
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: HVAC, latent heat transfer, Modelica, phase change material, thermal energy storage
An abundance of research has been performed to understand the physics of latent thermal energy storage with phase change material. Some analytical and numerical findings have been validated by experiments, but there are few free and open-source models available to the general public for use in systems simulation and analysis. The Modelica programming language is a good avenue to make such models available, because it is object-oriented, equation-based, declarative, and acausal. These characteristics have enabling the creation of component model libraries that can be used to build larger system simulations for design analysis. The authors have previously developed a numerical framework to model phase change thermal storage and have validated model predictions with experiments. The objectives of this paper are to describe the transfer of the numerical framework to an implementation in a Modelica component model and to validate the Modelica model with data from the experiment and the orig... Energy Performance Evaluation of a Ventilated Façade System through CFD Modeling and Comparison with International Standards
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, forced ventilation, natural ventilation, timber construction, ventilated façade
Ventilated façades can help to reduce summer building thermal loads and, therefore, energy consumption due to air-conditioning systems thanks to the combined effect of the solar radiation reflection and the natural or forced ventilation into the cavity. The evaluation of ventilated façades behavior and performance is complex and requires a complete thermo-fluid dynamic analysis. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methodology has been developed for the complete assessment of the energy performance of a prefabricated timber−concrete composite ventilated façade module in different operating conditions. Global numerical results are presented as well as local ones in terms of heat flux, air velocity, and temperature inside the façade cavity. The results show the dependency of envelope efficiency on solar radiation, the benefits that natural convection brings on potential energy savings and the importance of designing an optimized façade geometry. The results concerning the f... [more]

Open-Circuit Fault-Tolerant Control of Multi-Phase PM Machines by Compensating the d-q Axes Currents
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: five-phase machine, multi-phase machines, open-circuit fault-tolerant, permanent magnet machines
This paper presents a novel method to control sinusoidal distributed winding or sinusoidal back electromotive force (back-EMF) multi-phase permanent magnet (PM) machines under open-circuit fault conditions. In this study, five different fault conditions are considered: single-phase, adjacent double-phase, non-adjacent double-phase, adjacent three-phase, and non-adjacent three-phase open circuit conditions. New current sets for the remaining healthy phase under open-circuit fault conditions are obtained by compensating the direct-quadrature (d-q) axes currents. For this purpose, an iterative method has been used to get the new set of currents. D-q axes currents, due to faulty phase/phases, are shared to the healthy phases to obtain the same d-q axes currents as in the healthy condition. Therefore, the same torque is produced as in the healthy condition. The developed method is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink by using a d-q modelled sinusoidal back-EMF five-phase machine. Potential and Scenarios of Variants of Thermo-Modernization of Single-Family Houses: An Example of the Lubuskie Voivodeship
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecology, economy, Energy, low carbon development, thermo-modernization
The excessive air pollution in the Lubuskie Voivodeship and throughout Poland is a very serious problem. One of the main causes of poor air quality is low emission, which arises at a short distance from the ground (up to 40 m). The real reduction of low emission requires a series of measures. The most important of them, include replacement of non-ecological boilers heating single-family buildings, improvement of thermal insulation of outer building walls, development of public transport, limiting the movement of old, non-ecological cars, conducting extensive educational activities, economic support for the poorest families in pro-ecological activities, and development of district heating in urban areas. The issue of thermal modernization is also important from the point of view of ensuring an appropriate level of energy security in the social dimension. The article presents a scenario analysis of activities aimed at reducing low emission through economic support for thermal modernizati... [more]

The Impact of Ambient Sensing on the Recognition of Electrical Appliances
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ambient influences, appliance load signatures, device classification accuracy
Smart spaces are characterized by their ability to capture a holistic picture of their contextual situation. This often includes the detection of the operative states of electrical appliances, which in turn allows for the recognition of user activities and intentions. For electrical appliances with largely different power consumption characteristics, their types and operational times can be easily inferred from data collected at a single metering point (typically, a smart meter). However, a disambiguation between consumers of the same type and model, yet located in different areas of a smart building, is not possible this way. Likewise, small consumers (e.g., wall chargers) are often indiscernible from measurement noise and spurious power consumption events of other appliances. As a consequence thereof, we investigate how additional sensing modalities, i.e., data beyond electrical signals, can be leveraged to improve the appliance detection accuracy. Through a set of practical experime... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air–steam gasification, Aspen Plus, Biomass, bubbling fluidised bed, sensitivity analysis
The gasification process involves several reactions that occur simultaneously and are interrelated by several independent variables. Simulation tools can help us to understand the process behaviour and predict the efficiency and final composition of the products. In this work, two thermodynamic equilibrium models developed in Aspen Plus® software were assessed: a non-stoichiometric model based on the feedstock composition and on the most probable compounds expected from the results of the gasification process using minimisation of Gibbs free energy and a stoichiometric model based on a set of chemical reactions considered as the most relevant to describe the gasification process. Both models were validated with experimental data from a bubbling fluidised bed semi-pilot scale gasifier using pine kernel shells (PKS) as feedstock. The influence of temperature, stoichiometric ratio (SR) and steam to biomass ratio (SBR) were analysed. Overall, predictions of the gas composition and gasifica... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: film cooling, gas turbine, heat transfer coefficient, IR thermography
An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of the arrangement of fan-shaped film cooling holes and density ratio (DR) on heat transfer coefficient augmentation. Both single- and multi-row fan-shaped film cooling holes were considered. For the multi-row fan-shaped holes, the heat transfer coefficient was measured at DRs of 1 and 2, and both staggered and inline arrangements of holes were considered. For the single-row fan-shaped holes, DR = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 and M = 1.0 and 2.0 conditions were tested. The mainstream velocity was 20 m/s, and the turbulence intensity and boundary layer thickness were 3.6% and 6 mm, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient was measured using the one-dimensional transient infrared thermography method. The results show that an increased heat transfer coefficient augmentation is observed between film cooling holes for the case with a smaller hole pitch and higher blowing ratio. Spillage Forecast Models in Hydroelectric Power Plants Using Information from Telemetry Stations and Hydraulic Control
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: forecasting, Hydroelectric Power, Machine Learning, resources managing, telemetry
Hydroelectric power plants’ operational decisions are associated with several factors, such as generation planning, water availability and dam safety. One major challenge is to control the water spillage from the reservoir. Although this action represents a loss of energy production, it is a powerful strategy to regulate the reservoir level, ensuring the dam’s safety. The decision to use this strategy must be made in advance based on level and demand predictions. The present work applies supervised machine learning techniques to predict the operating condition of spillage in a hydroelectric plant for 5 h ahead. The use of this method, in real time, aims to assist the operator so that he can make more assertive and safer decisions, avoiding waste of energy resources and increasing the safety of dams. The Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron methods were used to define the architecture compared to the forecasting capacity. The proposed methodology was applied to a 902.5 MW Hydroelectr... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic response, elastic model, sectional loads, semi-submersible floating platform, structural optimization
This study investigates the sectional loads on an elastic semi-submersible platform for a 2 MW FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) used in the Fukushima demonstration project. A water tank test is firstly carried out with an elastic model to study the dynamic responses and sectional loads of the platform in regular and irregular waves. Numerical simulations are then performed using multiple hydrodynamic bodies connected by elastic beams. The dynamic responses of the elastic model are compared to those of a rigid model to clarify the influence of the structural stiffness on the platform motion and mooring tension. The predicted sectional loads on the deck, brace and pontoon by the proposed nonlinear hydrodynamic models show good agreement with the experimental data obtained from the water tank test and a simplified formula is proposed to evaluate the distribution of the moments on the platform. Finally, the structural optimization of the elastic semi-submersible platform is conducted.... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional two-stage charger, electric vehicle, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents the four-quadrant operation modes of bidirectional chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) framed in smart car parks. A cascaded model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the bidirectional two-stage off-board chargers is proposed. The controller is constructed in two stages. The model predictive direct power control for the grid side is applied to track the active/reactive power references. The scope of this work was to develop a technique based on the regression method and apply it on a real cooled geometry for measuring its internal heat transfer distribution. The proposed methodology is based upon an already available literature approach. For implementation of the methodology, the geometry is initially heated to a known steady temperature, followed by thermal transient, induced by injection of ambient air to its internal cooling system. Subject: Materials
Keywords: microencapsulation, PCM, specific heat, thermal delay method
This paper details an experimental study that was performed to investigate the specific heat of microencapsulated phase change material (mPCM) slurry and its heat of fusion at the PCM phase change transition temperature. Six samples (mPCM slurry concentrate with the water solution of propylene glycol used as a main base liquid) were prepared. As the concentrate contains 43.0% mPCM, the actual mass fraction amounts to 8.6, 12.9, 17.2, 21.5, 25.8, and 30.1 wt%, respectively. The thermal delay method was used. Samples were cooled from 50 °C to 10 °C. A higher concentration of microcapsules caused a proportional increase in the specific heat of slurry at the main peak melting temperature. The maximum value of the specific heat changed from 9.2 to 33.7 kJ/kg for 8.6 wt%, and 30.1 wt%, respectively. The specific heat of the mPCM slurry is a constant quantity and depends on the concentration of the microcapsules. The specific heat of the slurry (PCM inside microcapsules in a liquid form) decr... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: horizontal axis rotor, model experiment, water movement, Wave Energy
As traditional energy sources are increasingly depleting, ocean energy has become an emergent potential clean energy source. Wave energy, as an important part of ocean-derived energy, has been studied and utilized by coastal countries worldwide, which have developed various wave energy converters. Analytical Determination of the Slot and the End-Winding Portion of the Winding-to-Rotor Capacitance for the Prediction of Shaft Voltage in Electrical Machines
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: EDM currents, shaft voltage, traction motor, winding-to-rotor capacitance
Common-mode voltage, caused by a 2-level inverter, is a source of discharge currents in motor bearings. Due to the capacitive coupling, between the stator winding and the rotor, an image of the common-mode voltage is produced on the shaft—which can exceed the dielectric strength of the lubrication film of motor bearings. Accurate determination of the winding-to-rotor capacitance is necessary to predict the shaft voltage. This article proposes a novel analytical determination of the slot and the end-winding portion of the winding-to-rotor capacitance. The calculation rules, which are based on the method of image charges and the charge simulation method, take into account the continuity and the boundary conditions of the field areas. Results are validated by means of finite element method simulations. Notably, deviations are in the single-digit percentage range. Furthermore, the presented methods are simple to implement.
