Keywords: heat transfer fluid, parabolic-trough collector, quasi- dynamic model, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
A simplified mathematical model of parabolic-trough solar thermal power plants, which allow one to carry out an energetic characterization of the main thermal parameters that influence the solar field performance, was evaluated through a comparison of simulation results. Two geographical locations were selected to evaluate the mathematical model proposed in this work—one in each hemisphere—and design considerations according with the practical/operational experience were taken. Furthermore, independent simulations were performed using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, their results were compared with those obtained by the simplified model. According with the above, the mathematical model allows one to carry out simulations with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, in which the equations that allow the plant to be energetically characterized are composed of a series of logical conditions that help identify boundary conditions between dawn and sunset, direct normal irrad... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active filter reference, harmonic emission, power quality, reference impedances
This paper deals with harmonics compensation in industrial and distribution networks using an active filter (AcF). When defining the AcF’s reference current, it is important to properly consider the network background harmonic distortion. Within this paper, we propose an AcF reference current calculation method, based on customers’ current harmonic emissions. The main novelty of the paper is the AcF reference current calculation method that considers only the customer’s contributions to the harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling (PCC). By separating the harmonic current at the PCC into components that can be attributed to the customer and to the network, it is possible to limit the required AcF power. To determine the customer’s emission, the customer’s harmonic impedance must be known. As the actual harmonic impedance cannot be determined in a real environment, a reference harmonic impedance can be used instead. To test the proposed AcF reference current calculation metho... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drawing characteristic, evolution process, FDM-DEM numerical model, longwall top coal caving
In longwall top coal caving (LTCC), the resource recovery ratio of the working face is directly determined by the top coal recovery ratio. An investigation of the evolution of top coal drawing characteristics and revealing the evolution of top coal drawing parameters is necessary when providing guidance for caving parameter selection and improving the top coal recovery ratio. Based on in-situ measurements of the size distribution of caved top coal blocks in Wangjialing coal mine, a finite difference method (FDM)−discrete element method (DEM) coupled method was applied to establish a “continuous−discontinuous” numerical model and the process from the first coal drawing to the common coal drawing was simulated with 17 separate working face advances. The evolution of the drawing body (DB), loose body (LB), and top coal boundary (TCB) was obtained. The results show that, the evolution of parameters of DB such as shape and size, drawing amount, length and deflection angle of the long axis o... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: battery, CLC filter, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, pseudo-random binary sequence, state of health, wireless power transfer
This paper presents the design procedure of an electric circuit that can perform the battery state diagnosis and, simultaneously, provide its charging. A fast and embedded impedance measurement method is also proposed; this is based on a broadband current signal excitation on the battery during the constant current charging phase. The proposed solution performs the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is known to provide useful information about battery chemical−physical property changes due to aging or failure events. To demonstrate the functionalities of the proposed method, the spectroscopy is implemented in the control in the wireless charging system. An EIS charging test is simulated on an equivalent circuit model, which emulates the battery impedance properties in a specified frequency band. Circuit parameters are evaluated by experimental data. According to the obtained results, the proposed method allows us to reach an accurate estimation of the battery state and... [more]
Electric Mobility in Cities: The Case of Vienna
Amela Ajanovic, Marina Siebenhofer, Reinhard Haas
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, emissions, policies, public transport
Environmental problems such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are especially challenging in urban areas. Electric mobility in different forms may be a solution. While in recent years a major focus was put on private electric vehicles, e-mobility in public transport is already a very well-established and mature technology with a long history. The core objective of this paper is to analyze the economics of e-mobility in the Austrian capital of Vienna and the corresponding impact on the environment. In this paper, the historical developments, policy framework and scenarios for the future development of mobility in Vienna up to 2030 are presented. A major result shows that in an ambitious scenario for the deployment of battery electric vehicles, the total energy demand in road transport can be reduced by about 60% in 2030 compared to 2018. The major conclusion is that the policies, especially subsidies and emission-free zones will have the largest impact on the future developme... [more]

Keywords: carbon emission, flexible production rate, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable smart production system
Renewable energy and environmental issues are receiving considerable attention worldwide along with the technological development of production system for reducing global warming. Due to the use of smart technologies, the rate of carbon emission and energy utilization have become very high and are directly related to different industries. This study focuses on the effect of renewable energy on the advancement of smart production with a flexible production rate as well as the reduction of carbon emission to build a sustainable smart production system. A mathematical model is developed to maximize the profit of the smart production system for economic development while considering technological and environmental issues. The model is solved analytically, and we obtain closed and quasi-closed form solutions. A numerical experiment is performed, and a comparison with previous studies indicates that our method achieves more profit than existing ones. Additionally, we highlight the major effe... [more]

Keywords: coal macrolithotype, coalbed methane, geophysical logging, PCA methodology, Zhengzhuang field
Coal macrolithotypes control the reservoir heterogeneity, which plays a significant role in the exploration and development of coalbed methane. Traditional methods for coal macrolithotype evaluation often rely on core observation, but these techniques are non-economical and insufficient. The geophysical logging data are easily available for coalbed methane exploration; thus, it is necessary to find a relationship between core observation results and wireline logging data, and then to provide a new method to quantify coal macrolithotypes of a whole coal seam. In this study, we propose a L-Index model by combing the multiple geophysical logging data with principal component analysis, and we use the L-Index model to quantitatively evaluate the vertical and regional distributions of the macrolithotypes of No. 3 coal seam in Zhengzhuang field, southern Qinshui basin. Moreover, we also proposed a S-Index model to quantitatively evaluate the general brightness of a whole coal seam: the increa... [more]

Keywords: Abaqus, blast, damping systems, energy absorbers, impact, sandwich panels, shock
The need for more effective defence systems is of critical importance because of the rising risk of explosive attacks. Sandwich panels are used as plastically deforming sacrificial structures, absorbing blast wave energy. To the authors’ knowledge, the blast behaviour of sandwich panels with connected (welded/bolted/riveted) corrugated layers has been well covered in literature. Hence, the aim of this numerical study was to develop new, easy-to-build, non-expensive, graded sandwich panel with ‘unconnected’ corrugated layers that can be used as a multipurpose sacrificial protective structure against wide range of blast threats. The proposed sandwich panel is composed of six unconnected aluminium (AL6063-T4) core layers encased in a steel (Weldox 460E) frame with 330 × 330 × 150 mm overall dimensions. The numerical analysis was conducted using Abaqus/Explicit solver. First, the performance of four different nongraded layer topologies (trapezoidal, triangular, sinusoidal, and rectangular)... [more]
Understanding Membrane Fouling in Electrically Driven Energy Conversion Devices
Soo-Jin Han, Jin-Soo Park
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy conversion device, fouling, ion-exchange membrane, reverse electrodialysis
Positively charged (cetylpyridinium chloride), negatively charged (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and non-charged (polyethylene glycol) surfactants are used as potential foulant in reverse electrodialysis systems supplying seawater and river freshwater. Fouling tendency of the foulants to ion-exchange membranes is investigated in terms of the adsorption by electromigration, electrostatic attraction, and macromolecule interaction in reverse electrodialysis systems. According to theoretical prediction of fouling tendency, charged foulants in seawater streams could foul ion-exchange membranes significantly. However, the worst fouling behavior is observed when the charged foulants are present in river streams. As a result of zeta potential measurement, it is found that the Debye length of the charged foulants decreases due to the higher ionic strength of seawater streams and causes to lower net electrostatic effect. It finally results in less fouling tendency in reverse electrodialysis.

Keywords: energy harvesting, excitation, experiment, planform, PVDF, vibration
In the present paper, we report a systematic investigation of planform geometry and excitation level effects on the dynamics and power generation characteristics of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-based cantilevered vibration energy harvesters. Piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters provide a promising energy harvesting solution for widespread use of wireless sensors in remote locations. Highly flexible PVDF polymers offer resonant frequencies at suitable range for harvesting mechanical energy within low-frequency applications, though information on the efficient sizing of these devices is currently limited. We test the response of a set of eight harvesters to typical vibration sources excitation levels in the range 0.2−0.6 g. This set comprises four widths and two lengths, incrementing each time by a factor of two. The selected range of dimensions is sufficient to identify optimal power output versus width for both lengths tested. This optimal width value depends on excitation amp... [more]
The Energy of Finance in Refining of Medical Surge Capacity

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, economic resources, Energy, financial resources, healthcare capacity, medical surge, pandemic, resources
The availability of resources and their concentration in the place of greatest need, will not allow us to successfully overcome a medical surge without the energy required to activate these resources and activities, and increase their quantities if necessary, that is why the staff and management of healthcare institutions are forced to making ethical crisis decisions about who wins and who loses. This study highlights the versatility of the concept of ‘energy’ by attributing it to money or financial resources, which are highly essential in dealing with surges as the healthcare system adopts the appropriate capacity level. This study considers the means (space, staff, supplies, and specific resources) at the disposal of healthcare institutions for the control of diseases as economic resources to identify ways for enhancing their capacity, especially during periods of medical surges such as that caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The medical resources are dependent on ‘energy’... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalytic reactor, fluidized bed, heterogenous model, pseudohomogeneous model, steady state, transient behavior
Comparative analysis of the steady-state and transient properties of a bubbling fluidized-bed catalytic reactor obtained according to different mathematical models of the emulsion zone was performed to verify the commonly used assumption regarding the pseudohomogeneous nature of this zone. Four different mathematical models of the fluidized-bed reactor dynamics were formulated, based on different thermal and diffusional conditions at the gas-solid interface and within the catalyst pellet, namely the model based on the assumption of pseudohomogeneous character for the emulsion zone, and a group of two-scale models accounting for the heterogeneous character of this zone. It was demonstrated that, while the pseudohomogeneous model of the emulsion zone predicts almost identical behavior of the reactor at steady-state as the proposed heterogeneous models, it may fail in the prediction of the reactor start-up behavior, especially when dealing with highly exothermic processes run at relativel... Nowadays the design of large-scale structures can be effectively improved by the adoption of numerical models. Even if experimental tests still play a fundamental role, a methodological approach that combines experimental testing and modelling technique can significantly improve the understanding of the matter. This, in fact, would result in a more reliable optimization process, drastically reducing efforts and uncertainties towards the implementation of the final product. The present work deals with the development of a finite element model for the analysis of a full-scale prototype of an innovative parabolic trough collector. The collector is analysed under several load conditions in order to evaluate its structural behaviour. Each load configuration is also numerically reproduced. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing both the global (stiffness) and local (strain state) behaviour of the structure. Specifically, the comparison between experimental data... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery equalization, electric vehicle, flyback transformer, Step Size Factor, variable step size generalized predictive control
The inconsistency in large-scale battery pack significantly degrades the performance of electric vehicles. In order to diminish the inconsistency, the study designs an active equalization method comprising of equalizer and equalization strategy for lithium-ion batteries. A bidirectional flyback transformer equalizer (BFTE) is designed and analyzed. The BFTE is controlled by a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller to output designated balancing currents. Under the purpose of shortening equalization time and reducing energy consumption during the equalization process, this paper proposes an equalization strategy based on variable step size generalized predictive control (VSSGPC). The VSSGPC is improved on the generalized predictive control (GPC) by introducing the Step Size Factor. The VSSGPC surmounts the local limitation of GPC by expanding the control and output horizons to the global equalization process without increasing computation owing to the Step Size Factor. The experiment r... [more]

Keywords: alkaline fuel cell, carbonated soft drinks, juice drinks, power density
Sugar has the potential to create enough energy to power mobile electronics. Various sugar-powered fuel cells have been reported, however, most of them used pure glucose as substrate and enzymes/noble metals as catalysts. In this work, an alkaline fuel cell with cheap catalysts were constructed, and different sweet drinks were used as fuels for power generation. The influence of different substrates on the electrochemical performance was characterized under the controlled conditions. Our experimental results showed that the fuel cell fueled with carbonated soft drinks had the best performance under the conditions of 99.95 g/L chemical oxygen demand and 3M KOH. The power densities of the fuel cell fueled with different substrates decreased in the order of Pepsi (33.41 W/m2) > Sprite (28.38 W/m2) > apple juice (20.63 W/m2) > Coca (16.31 W/m2) > pear juice (15.31 W/m2) > orange juice (12.75 W/m2), which was consistent with linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spect... Keywords: algorithm, artificial lighting system, demand side management, energy flexibility, greenhouse, natural lighting, Optimization, predictive control
Artificial lighting systems are used in commercial greenhouses to ensure year-round yields. Current Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies improved the system efficiency. Nevertheless, having artificial lighting systems extended for hectares with power densities over 50W/m2 causes energy and power demand of greenhouses to be really significant. The present paper introduces an innovative supervisory and predictive control strategy to optimize the energy performance of the artificial lights of greenhouses. The controller has been implemented in a multi-span plastic greenhouse located in North Italy. The proposed control strategy has been tested on a greenhouse of 1 hectare with a lighting system with a nominal power density of 50 Wm−2 requiring an overall power supply of 1 MW for a period of 80 days. The results have been compared with the data coming from another greenhouse of 1 hectare in the same conditions implementing a state-of-the-art strategy for artificial lighting control. Res... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical fault detection, electrical safety, power distribution, power grids
The difficulties and uncertainties related to earth fault loop impedance measurement are addressed in this paper. Based on the presentation of the measurement procedure implemented in the test equipment (diagrams and measured quantities, respectively, interpretation of results), the shortcomings and errors that accompany it are highlighted. The position in the power system, the influence of power transformers, and the use of effective quantities instead of phasors are important sources of errors, but, as will be seen, the switching of loads at the consumer sides and/or the occurrence of fault regimes during measurements can lead to the most serious impairment of the accuracy in the impedance assessment. The clarification of these aspects is achieved, both starting from the equivalent diagrams of the measurement circuits and the analytical interpretation of the phenomena associated with the measurements, as well as based on the modeling and simulation of TN low-voltage electrical distri... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy balance of thermoelectric generator, thermal design of thermoelectric system, waste heat recovery system
Nearly 70% of the energy produced from automotive engines is released to the atmosphere in the form of waste energy. The recovery of this energy represents a vital challenge to engine designers primarily when a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is used, where the availability of a continuous, steady-state temperature and heat flow is essential. The potential of semi-truck engines presents an attractive application as many coaches and trucks are roaming motorways at steady-state conditions most of the time. This study presents an analytical thermal design and an experimental validation of the TEG system for waste heat recovery from the exhaust of semi-truck engines. The TEG system parameters were optimized to achieve the maximum power output. Experimental work was conducted on a specially constructed setup to validate the analytically obtained results. Both analytical and experimental results were found to be in good agreement with a marginal deviation, indicating the excellent accuracy of... [more]

The basic function of the Park and Ride (P&R) facility is to allow users to leave their vehicle on the outskirts of the city and to continue their journey to the city center using means of public transport, e.g., bus, tram, trolleybus, subway, train, or bike. In the first part of the paper, an analysis of the selected factors related to the functioning of P&R facilities in Warsaw (Poland) was performed. The main purpose of this paper was to identify and quantify the influence factors determining the choice of P&R facility during a journey. This analysis was performed for three hypothetical journey scenarios. A list of potential factors determining the choice of P&R facility during travel was compiled after conducting previous research in this area and studying the worldwide scientific literature on the subject. The structural parameters of the multinomial logit model were estimated based on the data from the survey conducted in Warsaw. The results of the analyses indicate that the deci... [more]

In modern society, high-quality material development and a large stable supply are key to perform frontier research and development. However, there are negative issues to address to utilize high-quality resources with a large stable supply for research, such as economic accessibility, commercialization, and so on. One of the cutting-edge research fields, perovskite-related research, usually requires high-quality chemicals with outstanding purity (>99%). We developed an economically feasible PbI2 precursor with around 1/20 cost-down for perovskite/perovskite quantum dots through recrystallization and/or hydrothermal purification. Following the methodology, the quantum dots from both as-prepared and purified PbI2 demonstrated identical photophysical properties, with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 52.61% using the purified PbI2 vs. 45.83% PLQY using commercial PbI2. The role of hydrothermal energy was also checked against the problematic PbI2, and we checked whether the hydro... [more]

Keywords: acoustic emission, joint strength mobilization, jointed rock masses, PFC
The joint arrangement in rock masses is the critical factor controlling the stability of rock structures in underground geotechnical engineering. In this study, the influence of the joint inclination angle on the mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses under uniaxial compression was investigated. Physical model laboratory experiments were conducted on jointed specimens with a single pre-existing flaw inclined at 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° and on intact specimens. The acoustic emission (AE) signals were monitored during the loading process, which revealed that there is a correlation between the AE characteristics and the failure modes of the jointed specimens with different inclination angles. In addition, particle flow code (PFC) modeling was carried out to reproduce the phenomena observed in the physical experiments. According to the numerical results, the AE phenomenon was basically the same as that observed in the physical experiments. The response of the pre-existing joint mainl... [more]

Keywords: AC-DC power converters, high power applications, low switching frequency, predictive control, solar power generation
Several control strategies have been proposed with the aim to get a desired behavior in the power converter variables. The most employed control techniques are linear control, nonlinear control based on linear and nonlinear feedback, and predictive control. The controllers associated with linear and nonlinear algorithms usually have a fixed switching frequency, featuring a defined spectrum given by the pulse width modulation (PWM) or space vector modulation (SVM) time period. On the other hand, finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) is known to present a variable switching frequency that results too high for high power applications, increasing losses, reducing the switches lifetime and, therefore, limiting its application. This paper proposes a predictive control approach using a very low sampling frequency, allowing the use of predictive control in high power applications. The proposed method is straightforward to understand, is simple to implement, and can be computed with off-... [more]
Combining Radar and Optical Satellite Imagery with Machine Learning to Map Lava Flows at Mount Etna and Fogo Island

Keywords: lava flow mapping, machine learning classifier, optical data, synthetic aperture radar, volcano remote sensing
Lava flow mapping has direct relevance to volcanic hazards once an eruption has begun. Satellite remote sensing techniques are increasingly used to map newly erupted lava, thanks to their capability to survey large areas with frequent revisit time and accurate spatial resolution. Visible and infrared satellite data are routinely used to detect the distributions of volcanic deposits and monitor thermal features, even if clouds are a serious obstacle for optical sensors, since they cannot be penetrated by optical radiation. On the other hand, radar satellite data have been playing an important role in surface change detection and image classification, being able to operate in all weather conditions, although their use is hampered by the special imaging geometry, the complicated scattering process, and the presence of speckle noise. Thus, optical and radar data are complementary data sources that can be used to map lava flows effectively, in addition to alleviating cloud obstruction and i... [more]

Keywords: DFT, harmonic analysis, IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018, multiple-resonator, PMU, rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), recursive algorithm, total vector error (TVE)
This article deals with the implementation of the P-Class PMU compliant with IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 by usage of a multiple-resonator (MR)-based approach for harmonic analysis having been proposed recently. In previously published articles, it has been shown that a trade-off between opposite requirements is possible by shifting a measurement time stamp along the filter window. Positioning the time stamp in a proximity of the time window center assures flat-top frequency responses. In this article, through simulation tests carried out under various conditions, it is shown that requirements of the IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 can be satisfied by the second and third order MR structure for particular conditions of the time stamp location.
