March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic analysis, finite element method, high-speed motor, mechanical analysis, switched reluctance motor, thermal analysis
Currently, one of the most used motor types for high-speed applications is the permanent-magnet synchronous motor. However, this type of machine has high costs and rare earth elements are needed for its production. For these reasons, permanent-magnet-free alternatives are being sought. An overview of high-speed electrical machines has shown that the switched reluctance motor is a possible alternative. This paper deals with design and optimization of this motor, which should achieve the same output power as the existing high-speed permanent-magnet synchronous motor while maintaining the same motor volume. The paper presents the initial design of the motor and the procedure for analyses performed using analytical and finite element methods. During the electromagnetic analysis, the influence of motor geometric parameters on parameters such as: maximum current, average torque, torque ripple, output power, and losses was analyzed. The analysis of windage losses was performed by analytical c... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: delayed neutron precursor drifting, load regulation, Particle Swarm Optimization, small module dual fluid reactor, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, uncertainty-based optimization
The small modular dual fluid reactor is a novel variant of the Generation IV molten salt reactor and liquid metal fast reactor. In the primary circuit, molten salt or liquid eutectic metal (U-Pu-Cr) is employed as fuel, and liquid lead works as the coolant in the secondary circuit. To design the control system of such an advanced reactor, the uncertainties of the employed computer model and the physicochemical properties of the materials must be considered. In this paper, a one-dimensional model of a core is established based on the equivalent parameters achieved via the coupled three-dimensional model, taking into account delayed neutron precursor drifting, and a power control system is developed. The performance of the designed controllers is assessed, taking into account the model and property uncertainties. The achieved results show that the designed control system is able to maintain the stability of the system and regulate the power as expected. Among the considered uncertain par... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, low voltage ride through, Particle Swarm Optimization, real and reactive power control, rotor side converter, self-tuning controller, wind farm
A de-loaded real power control strategy is proposed to decrease the real power output and increase the reactive power output of a grid-connected offshore wind farm in order to improve the voltage profile when the wind farm is subject to a grid fault. A simplified linear model of the wind farm is first derived and a fixed-gain proportional-integral (PI) real power controller is designed based on the pole-zero cancellation method. To improve the dynamic voltage response when the system is subject to a major disturbance such as a three-phase fault in the grid, a self-tuning controller based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to adapt the PI controller gains based on the on-line measured system variables. Digital simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK were performed on an offshore wind farm connected to the power grid in central Taiwan in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed PSO controller. It is concluded from the simulation results that a better dynamic voltage re... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging stations placement, electric vehicles fleet routing, evolutionary optimization, permutation encoding
This paper addresses the problem of route planning for a fleet of electric vehicles departing from a depot and supplying customers with certain goods. This paper aims to present a permutation-based method of vehicle route coding adapted to the specificity of electric drive. The developed method integrated with an evolutionary algorithm allows for rapid generation of routes for multiple vehicles taking into account the necessity of supplying energy in available charging stations. The minimization of the route distance travelled by all vehicles was taken as a criterion. The performed testing indicated satisfactory computation speed. A real region with four charging stations and 33 customers was analysed. Different scenarios of demand were analysed, and factors affecting the results of the proposed calculation method were indicated. The limitations of the method were pointed out, mainly caused by assumptions that simplify the problem. In the future, it is planned for research and method d... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cathodes, current collector, flow fields, foam stainless steel, μDMFC
The micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) has attracted more and more attention in the field of new energy due to its simple structure, easy operation, and eco-friendly byproducts. In a μDMFC’s structure, the current collector plays an essential role in collecting the conduction current, and the rational distribution of gas and water. The choice of its material and flow fields would significantly impact the μDMFC’s performance. To this end, four different types of cathode current collector were prepared in this study. The materials selected were stainless steel (SS) and foam stainless steel (FSS), with the flow fields of hole-type and grid-type. The performance of the μDMFC with different types of cathode current collector was investigated by using polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and discharging. The experimental results show that the maximum power density of μDMFC of the hole-type FSS cathode current collector is 49.53 mW/cm2 at 70 °C in the methan... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Exergy, heat exchanger, pinch point, sustainability index
Geothermal energy is a sustainable renewable source of energy. The installed capacity of geothermal energy in Kenya is 847.4 MWe of the total 2.7 GWe. This paper presents the effect of six different working fluids to optimize the geothermal of 21.5 MWe of reinjected brine at a single-flash power plant in Kenya. Engineering Equation Solver (EES) code was used to design and optimize simple organic Rankine (ORC) and regenerative cycles. The objective was to combine pinch point analysis and exergy analysis for the optimum utilization of geothermal energy by varying the turbine inlet pressure, pinch point, and reinjection temperature. The turbine inlet pressures, and pinch points were varied to obtain optimum pressures for higher net power output and exergy efficiencies. As the pressure increased, the efficiencies and net power generated increase to optimal at turbine inlet pressures between 2000 and 3000 kPa. By maintaining a condenser temperature at 46.7 °C, the turbine outlet pressures w... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic transients, lumped parameter model, numerical spurious oscillations, short transmission lines
The Lumped Parameter Model (LPM) is a known approach to represent overhead transmission lines (TLs), especially when these elements comprehend a few tens of kilometers. LPMs employ a large number of cascaded π-circuits to compute accurately the transient responses. These responses contain numerical spurious oscillations (NSO) characterized by erroneous peaks which distort the transient responses, mainly their peak values. Two modified LPM topologies composed of damping resistances inserted along the longitudinal or transversal branches of the cascaded π-circuits offer significant mitigations in the NSO. In this paper, in an effort to have the maximum mitigation of the NSO and low distortion in the transient responses, two modified topologies with optimized damping resistances are proposed to represent short TLs. Results demonstrate expressive attenuation in the peaks of NSO which reflect good agreement in comparison with the responses computed by the Bergeron’s line model. The mitigati... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: contemporaneous wireless information and energy transfer, physical layer security, power collecting
In this paper, the object of study is secure transmission and green energy transfer in full-duplex (FD) wireless-powered relay (WPR) secure systems, where an FD relay collects the power from radio-frequency signs and transmits the information in the face of multiple eavesdroppers. In order to improve the efficiency and safety of the contemporaneous wireless energy and information delivery, we propose a joint energy-signal- (ES-) aided secure beamforming and time-switch scheme under the self-power circulation protocol at the relay. The question formulated in this paper is to maximize the confidentiality rate according to energy restrictions at both the relay and energy receiver. As the question is non-salient and hard to resolve directly, we transform it into two sub-problems. For the first sub-problem, a two-level optimization technique is suggested to separately gain the optimal beamforming as well as the ES covariance. The extrinsic rank is a single-variable majorization question, wh... [more]

Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is considered a promising heat-to-power technology to utilize waste heat and renewable energy, including solar, biomass and geothermal. However, since the thermodynamic, economic and environmental performance is usually conflict, the single objective design could no longer meet the requirements of the ORC system, putting forward urgent requirements for multi-objective optimization, which has attracted increasing attention with lots of papers published. However, due to these different decision variables, optimization objectives and approaches, existing research is significantly different from each other and is difficult to compare without a systematic summary. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of ORC multi-objective research from three perspectives: optimization objective, method and optimization parameters. Based on the classification of different objectives, this work summarizes the involved variables and provides a recommendation for selecting app... [more]

A deeply buried pipe energy pile (DBP-EP) combines the advantages of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) and an inside buried pipe energy pile (IBP-EP) and is an efficient, clean, and energy-saving technology. Based on field tests and numerical simulations, this paper explores the temperature distribution and heat exchange effects of DBP-EP under different influencing factors. The results show that when the pile-to-well ratio is approximately 0.3−0.4, the heat exchange of the energy pile obtains the best benefit; the inlet water temperature is the most significant factor affecting the heat exchange effect of the energy pile, and when combined with a reasonable pile-to-well ratio, the energy pile obtains the best heat exchange effect; the flow rate has a significant impact on the heat exchange effect of the energy pile, but needs to be set reasonably according to the pile-to-well ratio; the influence of inlet water temperature, well depth, flow rate, and pile length on the heat exchange ef... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fuel consumption, multigene genetic programming, performance index, signal timings optimization, signalized intersection, stop penalty, stops
Transportation agencies optimize signals to improve safety, mobility, and the environment. One commonly used objective function to optimize signals is the Performance Index (PI), a linear combination of delays and stops that can be balanced to minimize fuel consumption (FC). The critical component of the PI is the stop penalty “K”, which expresses an FC stop equivalency estimated in seconds of pure delay. This study applies vehicular trajectory and FC data collected in the field, for a large fleet of modern vehicles, to compute the K-factor. The tested vehicles were classified into seven homogenous groups by using the k-prototype algorithm. Furthermore, multigene genetic programming (MGGP) is utilized to develop prediction models for the K-factor. The proposed K-factor models are expressed as functions of various parameters that impact its value, including vehicle type, cruising speed, road gradient, driving behavior, idling FC, and the deceleration duration. A parametric analysis is c... [more]

Keywords: crew rostering problem, e-mobility, electric garbage trucks, electric vehicle, mix integer programming, Optimization, solid waste collection, solid waste management, vehicle routing problem
Nowadays, robust and efficient solid waste collection is crucial to motivate citizens to participate in the circular economy by sorting recyclable solid waste. Vocational vehicles, including garbage trucks, contribute significantly to CO2 emissions; therefore, it is strongly recommended, and in the European Union it is mandatory, to replace conventional-fuel-based garbage trucks with electric ones. For providing sustainable and energy-efficient solid waste collection with a heterogeneous fleet, in-depth mathematical computations are needed to support solving complex decision-making problems, including crew rostering and vehicle routing, because the distance and capacity of electric garbage trucks differ from conventional-fuel-based ones. However, the literature on solid waste collection using electric garbage trucks is still relatively scarce. The main contribution of this paper is developing an optimization problem for balancing travel distance assigned to each garbage truck of a hete... [more]

Co-torrefaction of microalgae and lignocellulosic biomass was evaluated as a method to process microalgae sludge produced from various effluents and to obtain biochars with suitable properties for energy or material valorization. The influence of four independent variables on biochar yield and properties was evaluated by a set of experiments defined by response surface methodology (RSM). The biochars were characterized for proximate and ultimate composition, HHV, and methylene blue adsorption capacity. HHV of the biochars was positively correlated with carbonization temperature, residence time, and lignocellulosic biomass content in the feed. Co-torrefaction conditions that led to a higher yield of biochar (76.5%) with good calorific value (17.4 MJ Kg−1) were 250 °C, 60 min of residence time, 5% feed moisture, and 50% lignocellulosic biomass. The energy efficiency of the process was higher for lower temperatures (92.6%) but decreased abruptly with the increase of the moisture content o... [more]

Keywords: beetle antennae search optimization, clustering subset, direct graph, graph adaptive pruning, offshore wind farm, wake propagation
Owing to scale-up and complex wake effects, the centralized control that processes the command from turbines may be unsuitable, as it incurs high communication overhead and computational complexity for a large offshore wind farm (OWF). This paper proposes a novel decentralized non-convex optimization strategy for maxing power conversion of a large OWF based on a modified beetle antennae search (BAS) algorithm. First, an adaptive threshold algorithm which to establish a pruned wake direction graph while preserving the most critical wake propagation relationship among wind turbines are presented. The adaptive graph constraints were used to create wake sub-digraphs that split the wind farm into nearly uncoupled clustering communication subsets. On this basis, a Monte Carlo-based beetle annealing search (MC-BAS) nonlinear optimization strategy was secondly designed to adjust the yaw angles and axial factors for the maximum power conversion of each turbine subgroup. Finally, the simulation... [more]

The Rankine cycle is widely used for electricity production. Significant weight and size characteristics of the power equipment working on superheated steam are the main disadvantages of such power plants. The transition to supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) working fluid is a promising way to achieve a significant reduction in equipment metal consumption and to increase energy efficiency. This paper presents the results of thermodynamic analysis of S-CO2 thermal power plants (TPPs) utilizing the heat of combustion products of an energy boiler. It was found that the net efficiency of the developed S-CO2 TPP with a pulverized coal-fired boiler reached 49.2% at an initial temperature of 780 °C, which was 2% higher compared to the efficiency level of steam turbine power plants (STPPs) at a similar turbine inlet temperature.

This paper presents a comparison between two design methodologies applied to permanent magnet synchronous machines for hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs and EVs). Both methodologies are based on 2D finite element models and coupled to a genetic algorithm to optimize complex non-linear geometries such as multi-layer permanent magnet machines. To reduce the computation duration to evaluate Induced Voltage and Iron Losses for a given electrical machine configuration, a new methodology based on geometrical symmetries and magnetic symmetries are used and is detailed. Two electromagnetic models have been developed and used in the design stage. The first model was the stepped rotor position finite element analysis called abc model which considered the spatial harmonics without any approximation of the waveform of flux linkage inside the stator, and the second model was based on a fixed rotor position called dq model, with the approximation that the waveform of flux linkage inside the stator... Keywords: demand response, hybrid, Particle Swarm Optimization, pumped hydro energy storage, renewable, sizing, smart grid
The use of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) has become the best option for supplying electricity to sites remote from the central power system because of its sustainability, environmental friendliness, and its low cost of energy compared to many conventional sources such as diesel generators. Due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy resources, there is a need however for an energy storage system (ESS) to store the surplus energy and feed the energy deficit. Most renewable sources used battery storage systems (BSS), a green hydrogen storage system (GHSS), and a diesel generator as a backup for these sources. Batteries are very expensive and have a very short lifetime, and GHSS have a very expensive initial cost and many security issues. In this paper, a system consisting of wind turbines and a photovoltaic (PV) array with a pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) system as the main energy storage to replace the expensive and short lifetime batteries is proposed. Energy saving is an important issue for multiple-chiller systems. Optimal chiller loading (OCL) in multiple-chiller systems has been investigated with many optimization algorithms to save energy. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been successful in solving this problem in some cases, but not in all. The TPSO enhances the effectiveness of original particle swarm optimization to better solve the OCL problem. The TPSO algorithm is composed of two evolutions: particle evolution and team evolution. The partial load ratio (PLR) of each operating chiller and the on-off state of each chiller are the particle evolution parameters and team evolution parameters, respectively. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, this paper adopts three case studies so the results generated from the proposed algorithm TPSO, the original p... [more]

Keywords: coupling coefficient, inductive power transfer (IPT), magnetic coupler, PQI cores, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in military and civilian applications. However, the insufficient cruising range restricts the development of UAVs due to the limitation of their battery. Inductive power transfer (IPT) is an effective way to charge the battery and solve this problem. Magnetic coupler is a key component of the IPT system, which greatly affects the power transfer and efficiency of the IPT. This paper proposes a new magnetic coupler with vertical spiral coils and ferrite PQI cores for the IPT system of UAVs, which can enhance the magnetic coupling and improve the performance of the IPT system. Finite element simulations are used to investigate the magnetic field distribution and coupling capability of the proposed magnetic coupler. In addition, an experimental platform is built to prove the validity of the IPT system using the proposed magnetic coupler. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, optimal sensing ratio, primary user reactivation, sensing performance, spectrum sensing
Energy efficiency (EE) is of great concern in cognitive radio networks since the throughput and energy consumption of secondary users (SUs) vary with the sensing time. However, the conditions of the detection probability and false alarm probability should be respected to better protect primary users (PUs) and to improve the sensing performance of SUs. Additionally, the PUs’ minimum averaged power provision should also be regarded as a key problem of interactive linking to SUs. Therefore, an integrated design between the PU and SUs is desired for the coordination of the whole cognitive radio system, especially regarding the satisfaction of EE and performance metrics. This study formulates sensing constraints in a unified way and calculates the minimum SNR of SUs, based on which the essential PU power provision is computed. Furthermore, EE is proved as a decreasing function with the PU’s active ratio, where the maximum EE is obtained corresponding to the minimum QoS requirements of the s... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: direct heating system, exergoeconomic analysis, geothermal energy, plastic plate heat exchanger
The highest economic costs of a geothermal plant are basically related to well drilling and heat exchanger maintenance cost due to the chemical aggressiveness of geothermal fluid. The possibility to reduce these costs represents an opportunity to push toward geothermal plants development. Such challenges are even more important in the sites with a low-medium temperature geothermal fluids (90−120 °C) availability, where the use of these fluids for direct thermal uses can be very advantageous. For this reason, in this study, a direct geothermal heating system for a building will be investigated by considering a plastic plate heat exchanger. The choice of a polymeric heat exchanger for this application is upheld by its lower purchase cost and its higher fouling resistance than the common metal heat exchangers, overcoming the economic issues related to conventional geothermal plant. Thus, the plastic plate heat exchanger was, firstly, geometrical and thermodynamical modeled and, after, exe... [more]

Syngas fermentation via the Wood-Ljungdahl (WL) pathway is a promising approach for converting gaseous pollutants (CO and CO2) into high-value commodities. Because the WL involves several enzymes with trace metal components, it requires an adequate supply of micronutrients in the fermentation medium for targeted bioprocessing such as bioethanol production. Plackett-Burman statistical analysis was performed to examine the most efficient trace elements (Ni, Mg, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, B, W, Zn, Fe, and Mo) and their concentrations for Clostridium ljungdahlii on ethanol production. Overall, 1.5 to 2.5 fold improvement in ethanol production could be achieved with designed trace element concentrations. The effects of tungsten and copper on ethanol and biomass production were determined to be the most significant, respectively. The model developed was statistically significant and has the potential to significantly decrease the cost of trace element solutions by 18−22%. This research demonstrates th... [more]
