Topology Optimization to Reduce Electromagnetic Force Induced Vibration for the Specific Frequency of PMSM Motor Using Electromagnetic-Structural Coupled Analysis
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic force, electromagnetic-structural coupled analysis, PMSM, specific frequency, topology optimization, vibration, vibration reduction.
Vibration and noise reduction are very important in electric vehicle driving motors. In this study, topology optimization of housing was performed to reduce vibration in a specific frequency caused by electromagnetic force generated by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The vibration induced by the electromagnetic force of the motor was calculated using electromagnetic-structural coupled analysis. Then, the magnitude of the acceleration for a specific frequency at which peak occurs in the rectangular and circular shape housing concept design model was reduced by using the topology optimization method. As a result, the rectangular and circular shape housing design reduced 92.9% and 96.0%, respectively. Finally, the vibration was effectively reduced while maintaining the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor, for which topology optimization was conducted while not changing the rotor or stator shape design (electromagnetic design factor) but by changing the motor housing... The Optimal Allocation of Distributed Generators Considering Fault Current and Levelized Cost of Energy Using the Particle Swarm Optimization Method
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generator (DG), fault analysis, levelized cost of energy, particle swarm optimization (PSO), single line-to-ground fault.
The power requirements of grids have risen as artificial intelligence and electric vehicle technologies have been used. Thus, the installation of distributed generators (DGs) has become an essential factor to streamline power grids. The objective of this study is to optimize the capacity and location of DGs. For this purpose, an objective function was defined, which takes into account the fault current and the levelized cost of energy, and a modified particle swarm optimization method was applied. Then, we analyzed a case of a single line-to-ground fault with a test feeder (i.e., the IEEE 30 bus system) with no DGs connected, as well as a case where the DGs are optimally connected. The effect of the optimally allocated DGs on the system was analyzed. We discuss an optimal layout method that takes the economic efficiency of the DG installation into account.

Cloud Energy Storage System Operation with Capacity P2P Transaction
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cloud energy storage system, convex optimization, energy storage system, linear programming, Nash bargaining, peer-to-peer transaction.
Research on energy storage systems (ESS) is actively aiming to mitigate against the unreliability of renewable energy sources (RES), and ESS operation and management has become one of the most important research topics. Since installing ESS for each user requires high investment cost, a study on cloud ESS gains attention recently. Cloud ESS refers to an ESS that is logically shared by multiple users as if they have their own ESS in their premises. In this paper, we propose a new cloud ESS sharing technique that allows capacity P2P transactions among users. Since cloud ESS is a virtual facility that is linked to an actual ESS, it is easy for users to sell the unused storage capacity to other users or to buy additional capacity from other users during operation. We also propose a system that encourages users to completely entrust the cloud ESS operator and share the extra benefit with the operator and other users. To verify the proposed method, we demonstrate the benefit of capacity P2P... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CHP, energetic and economic optimization, Energy Efficiency, heat sources, municipal sewage sludge drying.
The treatment of growing production of municipal sewage sludge has become a significant global problem. Drying of digested sewage sludge is a promising alternative to sludge disposal at dumping sites. The research objective of this study was to find the optimal heat source for a sludge drying plant in a large municipal sewage treatment plant (people equivalent: 250,000). Two boundary heat supply cases were analyzed in the paper: cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) units, internal combustion (IC) engines fired with natural gas, and plant supplied with a gas boiler. The aim of the research was to find the optimal size of the cogeneration unit cooperating with the gas boiler as heat sources for a given drying plant case with the maximum net present (NPV) value as the objective function. The results of the conducted optimization show higher profitability of cases with larger cogeneration unit. For the basic assumptions, the maximum NPV is obtained for the largest analyzed CHP unit: 1300 k... [more]

Determining the Optimal Location and Number of Voltage Dip Monitoring Devices Using the Binary Bat Algorithm
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: binary bat algorithm, monitor reach area matrix, PQ monitor, voltage dip.
Voltage dips represent a significant power quality problem. The main cause of voltage dips and short-term interruptions is an electrical short circuit that occurs in transmission or distribution networks. Faults in the power system are stochastic by nature and the main cause of voltage dips. As faults in the transmission system can affect more customers than faults in the distribution system, to reduce the number of dips, it is not enough to invest in a small part of the transmission or distribution system. Only targeted investment in the whole (or a large part of the) power system will reduce voltage dips. Therefore, monitoring parts of the power system is very important. The ideal solution would be to cover the entire system so that a power quality (PQ) monitor is installed on each bus, but this method is not economically justified. This paper presents an advanced method for determining the optimal location and the optimal number of voltage dip measuring devices. The proposed algorit... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic response, elastic model, sectional loads, semi-submersible floating platform, structural optimization.
This study investigates the sectional loads on an elastic semi-submersible platform for a 2 MW FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) used in the Fukushima demonstration project. A water tank test is firstly carried out with an elastic model to study the dynamic responses and sectional loads of the platform in regular and irregular waves. Numerical simulations are then performed using multiple hydrodynamic bodies connected by elastic beams. The dynamic responses of the elastic model are compared to those of a rigid model to clarify the influence of the structural stiffness on the platform motion and mooring tension. The predicted sectional loads on the deck, brace and pontoon by the proposed nonlinear hydrodynamic models show good agreement with the experimental data obtained from the water tank test and a simplified formula is proposed to evaluate the distribution of the moments on the platform. Finally, the structural optimization of the elastic semi-submersible platform is conducted.... [more]

Optimization of the Urea Injection Angle and Direction: Maximizing the Uniformity Index of a Selective Catalytic Reduction System
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design optimization, numerical analysis, selective catalytic reduction, uniformity index, urea injector design.
The uniformity of ammonia is very crucial for reducing the NOX emissions in a selective catalytic reduction system since the uniformity highly affects the chemical reaction between the ammonia and NOX emission. However, increasing ammonia uniformity in a short time period while injecting a urea solution is not a trivial task. Therefore, in this study, the uniformity of various urea injector designs is compared and an optimal design for the urea injector angle and direction is selected. The uniformity index (UI) was calculated using numerical analysis and compared with experimental result to achieve high reliability. The boundary condition of the analysis is extracted from the dominant operating region of the non-road transient cycle (NRTC) to guarantee a realistic analysis result. The design candidates were generated from the combination of three urea injection angles and eight urea injection directions and thoroughly compared to provide an insightful analysis. The conclusion is that i... [more]

Wind Farm Layout Optimization Using a Metamodel and EA/PSO Algorithm in Korea Offshore
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evolutionary algorithm, Korea offshore, metamodel, offshore wind farm layout optimization, park wake model, Particle Swarm Optimization.
This paper examines the solution to the problem of turbine arrangement in offshore wind farms. The two main objectives of offshore wind farm planning are to minimize wake loss and maximize annual energy production (AEP). There is more wind with less turbulence offshore compared with an onshore case, which drives the development of the offshore wind farm worldwide. South Korea’s offshore wind farms, which are deep in water and cannot be installed far off the coast, are affected by land complex terrain. Thus, domestic offshore wind farms should consider the separation distance from the coastline as a major variable depending on the topography and marine environmental characteristics. As a case study, a 60 MW offshore wind farm was optimized for the coast of the Busan Metropolitan City. For the analysis of wind conditions in the candidate site, wind conditions data from the meteorological tower and Ganjeolgot AWS at Gori offshore were used from 2001 to 2018. April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building energy management system, occupant behavior, Particle Swarm Optimization, passive cooling.
The common approach to model occupants behaviors in buildings is deterministic and consists of assumptions based on predefined fixed schedules or rules. In contrast with the deterministic models, stochastic and agent based (AB) models are the most powerful and suitable methods for modeling complex systems as the human behavior. In this paper, a co-simulation architecture is proposed with the aim of modeling the occupant behavior in buildings by a stochastic-AB approach and implementing an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS). In particular, optimized control logics are designed for smart passive cooling by controlling natural ventilation and solar shading systems to guarantee the thermal comfort conditions and maintain energy performance. Moreover, the effects of occupant actions on indoor thermal comfort are also taken into account. This study shows how the integration of automation systems and passive techniques increases the potentialities of passive cooling in build... [more]

A Novel Integrated Profit Maximization Model for Retailers under Varied Penetration Levels of Photovoltaic Systems
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, deregulated electricity market, Optimization, photovoltaics, retailer.
In contemporary energy markets, the Retailer acts as the intermediate between the generation and demand sectors. The scope of the Retailer is to maximize its profits by selecting the appropriate procurement mechanism and selling price to the consumers. The wholesale market operation influences the profits since the mix of generation plants determines the system marginal price (SMP). In the related literature, the SMP is treated as a stochastic variable, and the wholesale market conditions are not taken into account. The present paper presents a novel methodology that aims at connecting the wholesale and retail market operations from a Retailer’s perspective. A wholesale market clearing problem is formulated and solved. The scope is to examine how different photovoltaics (PV) penetration levels in the generation side influences the profits of the Retailer and the selling prices to the consumers. The resulting SMPs are used as inputs in a retailer profit maximization problem. This approa... [more]

Systematic Method for the Energy-Saving Potential Calculation of Air-Conditioning Systems via Data Mining. Part I: Methodology
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: data mining, energy saving potential, operational data, Optimization, recognition.
Air-conditioning systems contribute the most to energy consumption among building equipment. Hence, energy saving for air-conditioning systems would be the essence of reducing building energy consumption. The conventional energy-saving diagnosis method through observation, test, and identification (OTI) has several drawbacks such as time consumption and narrow focus. To overcome these problems, this study proposed a systematic method for energy-saving diagnosis in air-conditioning systems based on data mining. The method mainly includes seven steps: (1) data collection, (2) data preprocessing, (3) recognition of variable-speed equipment, (4) recognition of system operation mode, (5) regression analysis of energy consumption data, (6) constraints analysis of system running, and (7) energy-saving potential analysis. A case study with a complicated air-conditioning system coupled with an ice storage system demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the traditiona... [more]

An Estimation of Hydraulic Power Take-off Unit Parameters for Wave Energy Converter Device Using Non-Evolutionary NLPQL and Evolutionary GA Approaches
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, hydraulic power take-off unit, non-linear programming by quadratic Lagrangian, parameter estimation, wave energy converter.
This study is concerned with the application of two major kinds of optimisation algorithms on the hydraulic power take-off (HPTO) model for the wave energy converters (WECs). In general, the HPTO unit’s performance depends on the configuration of its parameters such as hydraulic cylinder size, hydraulic accumulator capacity and pre-charge pressure and hydraulic motor displacement. Conventionally, the optimal parameters of the HPTO unit need to be manually estimated by repeating setting the parameters’ values during the simulation process. However, such an estimation method can easily be exposed to human error and would subsequently result in an inaccurate selection of HPTO parameters for WECs. Therefore, an effective approach of using the non-evolutionary Non-Linear Programming by Quadratic Lagrangian (NLPQL) and evolutionary Genetic Algorithm (GA) algorithms for determining the optimal HPTO parameters was explored in the present study. A simulation−optimisation of the HPTO model was p... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design and operation optimization, distributed solar energy system, dynamic operation strategy, genetic algorithm (GA), multi-energy complementary.
The rapid urbanization in Northwest China highlights the mismatch of increasing energy demand and limited local energy supply. Nevertheless, the remote areas in Northwest China are abundant with rich solar energy resources and land space resource. Therefore, establishing a distributed solar energy system (DSES) is a feasible solution to the energy supply problem in remote Northwest China. Due to the strong fluctuations in the availability of solar energy, operation strategies based on fixed parameters may not ensure optimal operation of DSESs. In this study, dynamic operation strategies that allocate surplus power from photovoltaic panels according to variable ratios were developed in both grid-connected and off-grid scenarios, a joint optimization model for optimizing the design and operation of a DSES was established based on the dynamic operation strategies, and a DSES of a residential building in Shaanxi Province was used as a case study. Keywords: bipartite graph, inner approximation, non-orthogonal multiple access, power consumption, rate fairness.
This paper considers a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink network, where a hybrid of NOMA and beamforming designs is developed to enhance the channel capacity. Distributed Computational Framework for Large-Scale Stochastic Convex Optimization
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: decentralized scenario program, distributed computation, distributed scenario program, distributed stochastic systems, plug-and-play framework, scenario convex program, Stochastic Optimization.
This paper presents a distributed computational framework for stochastic convex optimization problems using the so-called scenario approach. Such a problem arises, for example, in a large-scale network of interconnected linear systems with local and common uncertainties. Due to the large number of required scenarios to approximate the stochasticity of these problems, the stochastic optimization involves formulating a large-scale scenario program, which is in general computationally demanding. We present two novel ideas in this paper to address this issue. We first develop a technique to decompose the large-scale scenario program into distributed scenario programs that exchange a certain number of scenarios with each other to compute local decisions using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We show the exactness of the decomposition with a-priori probabilistic guarantees for the desired level of constraint fulfillment for both local and common uncertainty sources. As... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicle, low-power chargers, P + R car park, shared parking, sharing economy.
Electric vehicles are a mobility innovation that can help significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. However, increasing numbers of electric vehicles require the construction of a dense charging infrastructure with a sufficient number of chargers. Based on the identified requirements for existing electric vehicle users and potential new customers, the paper proposes a charging point model for an urban area equipped with a local transformer station and a sufficient number of low-power chargers. In particular, the model focuses on efficient use of chargers throughout the day, considering private rental of chargers paid by residents in the evening. The model uses an optimization method that compares the non-covered fixed costs due to unsold electricity to nonresidents and the annualized costs of building an additional transformer. The proposed optimal charging point solution was tested in a case study using real data capturing users’ habits and their arriva... [more]

Branch and Bound Algorithm Based on Prediction Error of Metamodel for Computational Electromagnetics
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic, finite element method, metamodel, optimization methods, TEAM Workshop problems.
Metamodels proved to be a very efficient strategy for optimizing expensive black-box models, e.g., Finite Element simulation for electromagnetic devices. It enables the reduction of the computational burden for optimization purposes. However, the conventional approach of using metamodels presents limitations such as the cost of metamodel fitting and infill criteria problem-solving. This paper proposes a new algorithm that combines metamodels with a branch and bound (B&B) strategy. However, the efficiency of the B&B algorithm relies on the estimation of the bounds; therefore, we investigated the prediction error given by metamodels to predict the bounds. This combination leads to high fidelity global solutions. We propose a comparison protocol to assess the approach’s performances with respect to those of other algorithms of different categories. Then, two electromagnetic optimization benchmarks are treated. This paper gives practical insights into algorithms that can be used when optim... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Optimization, residential dwellings, solar thermal systems.
Solar thermal systems have been widely used to increase energy efficiency in the building sector, since the use of renewable energy sources became one of the top priorities to meet environmental targets. The main objective of this study is the thermo-economic optimization of solar thermal systems for residential building applications, considering a multi-objective approach.
