Keywords: electric vehicles (EVs), finite element method (FEM), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO), high torque density, switched reluctance motor (SRM).
In this paper, the optimization and characteristics analysis of a three-phase 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM) based on a Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) for electric vehicles (EVs) application is presented. This research aims to enhance the output torque density of the proposed SRM. Finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the characteristics and optimization process of the proposed motor. The proposed metaheuristic GWO combines numerous objective functions and design constraints with different weight factors. Maximum flux density, current density, and motor volume are selected as the optimization constraints, which play a significant role in the optimization process. GWO performs optimization for each iteration and sends it to FEM software to analyze the performance before starting another iteration until the optimized value is found. Simulations are employed to understand the characteristics of the proposed motor. Finally, the optimized prototype motor is manufactured and perfo... [more]
Optimization and Influence of Micro-Chamfering on Oil Film Lubrication Characteristics of Slipper/Swashplate Interface within Axial Piston Pump
Jihai Jiang, Zebo Wang.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: axial piston pumps, coupling algorithm, lubrication characteristics, numerical model, power loss.
The overturning and eccentric abrasion of the slipper worsens the lubrication characteristics and increases the friction power loss and kinetic energy consumption of the slipper/swashplate interface to reduce the axial piston pump efficiency. A coupling lubrication numerical model and algorithm and a micro-chamfering structure are developed and proposed to predict more precisely and improve the lubrication characteristics of the slipper/swashplate interface. The simulation results reveal that the slipper without micro-chamfering overturns and contacts with the swashplate, while the one with micro-chamfering forms a certain oil film thickness to prevent this contact effectively. The minimum total power loss of the slipper/swashplate interface has to be effectively ensured under the worst working conditions, such as the high pressure, the low speed, the maximum swashplate inclination angle and the minimum house pressure. The optimal micro-chamfering width and depth are 1.2 mm and 3.5 μm... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: error, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), measurement accuracy, temperature coefficient, temperature distribution.
Measurement accuracy is an important performance indicator for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) voltage dividers. The temperature rise effect for a HVDC voltage divider’s internal resistance has an adverse effect on measurement accuracy. In this paper, by building a solid model of a DC voltage divider, the internal temperature rise characteristic and error caused by the temperature rise in a resistance voltage divider were theoretically simulated. We found that with the increase in height and working time, the internal temperature of the voltage divider increased. The results also showed that the lowest temperature was near the lower flange and the highest temperature was near the upper flange in the middle of the voltage divider. The error caused by the temperature rise increased first and then decreased gradually with divider height, increasing with its working time. The measurement error caused by the internal temperature difference in steady state reached a maximum of 158.4 ppm.... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 3D layout, coupling, Optimization, paralleling devices, PEEC method, power electronics, stray inductance.
The impact of the stray inductances originated from interconnects in power electronics becomes crucial with the next generation of SiC devices. This paper shows that the existing layout of a railway inverter, operating with Si IGBTs already exhibits a dynamic current imbalance between paralleled modules. This will not allow using this geometry with SiC MOSFETs. A complete investigation of the electromagnetic origin of this issue has been performed. A generic circuit model has been proposed to establish a cabling rule to design a Gate Distribution Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in such a way that it compensates the power dissymmetry. An optimization strategy has been used to obtain a new geometry of this PCB, which has been validated with a time domain simulation.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: autonomous PV hybrid system, energy management, fuzzy logic control, hybrid energy storage, Particle Swarm Optimization.
Off-grid applications based on intermittent solar power benefit greatly from hybrid energy storage systems consisting of a battery short-term and a hydrogen long-term storage path. An intelligent energy management is required to balance short-, intermediate- and long-term fluctuations in electricity demand and supply, while maximizing system efficiency and minimizing component stress. An energy management was developed that combines the benefits of an expert-knowledge based fuzzy logic approach with a metaheuristic particle swarm optimization. Unlike in most existing work, interpretability of the optimized fuzzy logic controller is maintained, allowing the expert to evaluate and adjust it if deemed necessary. The energy management was tested with 65 1-year household load datasets. It was shown that the expert tuned controller is more robust to changes in load pattern then the optimized controller. However, simple readjustments restore robustness, while largely retaining the benefits ac... [more]

In past decades, the deployment of renewable-energy-based power generators, namely solar photovoltaic (PV) power generators, has been projected to cause a number of new difficulties in planning, monitoring, and control of power distribution grids. In this paper, a control scheme for flexible asset management is proposed with the aim of closing the gap between power supply and demand in a suburban low-voltage power distribution grid with significant penetration of solar PV power generation while respecting the different systems’ operational constraints, in addition to the voltage constraints prescribed by the French distribution grid operator (ENEDIS). The premise of the proposed strategy is the use of a model-based predictive control (MPC) scheme. The flexible assets used in the case study are a biogas plant and a water tower. The mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) setting due to the water tower ON/OFF controller greatly increases the computational complexity of the optimisati... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CLLC resonant converter, integrated magnetic structure, Pareto optimization procedure, resonant inductance, transformer.
This paper proposes an integrated magnetic structure for a CLLC resonant converter. With the proposed integrated magnetic structure, two resonant inductances and the transformer are integrated into one magnetic core, which improves the power density of the CLLC resonant converter. In the proposed integrated magnetic structure, two resonant inductances are decoupled with the transformer and can be adjusted by the number of turns in each inductance. Furthermore, two resonant inductances are coupled to reduce the number of turns in each inductance. As a result, the conduction loss can be reduced. The trade-off design of the integrated magnetic structure is carried out based on the Pareto optimization procedure. With the Pareto optimization procedure, both high efficiency and high-power density can be achieved. The proposed integrated magnetic structure is validated by theoretical analysis, simulations, and experiments.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, forecasting, Optimization, prosumer, smart home.
This work presents an optimization framework based on mixed-integer programming techniques for a smart home’s optimal energy management. In particular, through a cost-minimization objective function, the developed approach determines the optimal day-ahead energy scheduling of all load types that can be either inelastic or can take part in demand response programs and the charging/discharging programs of an electric vehicle and energy storage. The underlying energy system can also interact with the power grid, exchanging electricity through sales and purchases. The smart home’s energy system also incorporates renewable energy sources in the form of wind and solar power, which generate electrical energy that can be either directly consumed for the home’s requirements, directed to the batteries for charging needs (storage, electric vehicles), or sold back to the power grid for acquiring revenues. Three short-term forecasting processes are implemented for real-time prices, photovoltaics, a... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ant colony algorithm, Energy, IoT, Optimization.
Internet of Things (IoT) is a new concept in the information and communication technology studies which indicates that any creature (human, animal, or object) can send and receive data through communication networks, such as the internet or intranet platform. Wireless sensors have limited energy resources due to the use of batteries to supply energy, and since it is usually not possible to replace the batteries of these sensors. In addition, the lifespan of the wireless sensor network is limited and short. Therefore, reducing the energy consumption of sensors in IoT networks for increasing network lifespan is one of the fundamental challenges and issues in these networks. In this paper, a routing protocol is proposed and simulated based on an ant colony optimization algorithm’s performance. The clustering is performed with a routing method based on energy level criteria, collision reduction, distance from the cluster-head to the destination, and neighborhood energy in the proposed meth... Keywords: coordination time interval (CTI), genetic algorithm (GA), inverse time overcurrent relay, per-phase relay coordination, three-phase relay coordination, time dial settings (TDS), time overcurrent characteristic (TOC).
Penetration of the power grid by renewable energy sources, distributed storage, and distributed generators is becoming increasingly common. Increased utilization of these distributed energy resources (DERs) has given rise to additional protection coordination concerns, particularly where they are utilized in an unbalanced manner or where loading among phases is unbalanced. Digital relays such as the SEL-751 (produced by Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Pullman, WA, USA) series have the capability of being set on a per-phase basis. This capability is underutilized in common practice. Additionally, in optimization algorithms for determining relay settings, the time-overcurrent characteristics (TOCs) of relays are generally not treated as variables and are assigned before running the optimization algorithm. In this paper, TOC options themselves are treated as discrete variables to be considered in the optimization algorithm. A mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) is set... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: annual wind distribution, Optimization, switched reluctance generator (SRG).
This article presents a method to adjust the elements of a small wind power plant to the wind speed characterized by the highest annual level of energy. Tests were carried out on the basis of annual wind distributions at three locations. The standard range of wind speeds was reduced to that resulting from the annual wind speed distributions in these locations. The construction of the generators and the method of their excitation were adapted to the characteristics of the turbines. The results obtained for the designed power plants were compared with those obtained for a power plant with a commercial turbine adapted to a wind speed of 10 mps. The generator structure and control method were optimized using a genetic algorithm in the MATLAB program (Mathworks, Natick, MA, USA); magnetostatic calculations were carried out using the FEMM program; the simulations were conducted using a proprietary simulation program. The simulation results were verified by measurement for a switched reluctan... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, co-located system, coordination strategy, frequency response, particle swarm optimisation.
The rapid development and growth of battery storage have heightened an interest in the co-location of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with renewable energy projects which enables the stacking of multiple revenue streams while reducing connection charges of BESS. To help wind energy industries better understand the coordinated operation of BESS and wind farms and its associated profits, this paper develops a simulation model to implement a number of coordination strategies where the BESS supplies enhanced frequency response (EFR) service and enables the time shift of wind generation based on the UK perspective. The proposed model also simulates the degradation of Lithium-Ion battery and incorporates a state of charge (SOC) dependent limit on the charge rate derived from a constant current-constant voltage charging profile. In addition, a particle swarm optimisation-based battery sizing algorithm is developed here on the basis of the simulation model to determine the optimal size o... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: converter, current ripple, electrical vehicle on-board charger, four-leg, harmonic distortion, neutral inductor, Optimization, pulse-width modulation (PWM), switching losses, three-phase four-wire.
This paper presents a comprehensive study of peak-to-peak and root-mean-square (RMS) values of AC current ripples with balanced and unbalanced fundamental currents in a generic case of three-phase four-leg converters with uncoupled AC interface inductors present in all three phases and in neutral. The AC current ripple characteristics were determined for both phase and neutral currents, considering the sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) method. The derived expressions are simple, effective, and ready for accurate AC current ripple calculations in three- or four-leg converters. This is particularly handy in the converter design process, since there is no need for heavy numerical simulations to determine an optimal set of design parameters, such as switching frequency and line inductances, based on the grid code or load restrictions in terms of AC current ripple. Particular attention has been paid to the performance comparison between the conventional three-phase three-leg converte... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Demand Response, dynamic thermal rating, flexibility, hosting capacity, transformer.
(1) Background: This paper proposes a strategy coupling Demand Response Program with Dynamic Thermal Rating to ensure a transformer reserve for the load connection. This solution is an alternative to expensive grid reinforcements. (2) Methods: The proposed methodology firstly considers the N-1 mode under strict assumptions on load and ambient temperature and then identifies critical periods of the year when transformer constraints are violated. For each critical period, the integrated management/sizing problem is solved in YALMIP to find the minimal Demand Response needed to ensure a load connection. However, due to the nonlinear thermal model of transformers, the optimization problem becomes intractable at long periods. To overcome this problem, a validated piece-wise linearization is applied here. (3) Results: It is possible to increase reserve margins significantly compared to conventional approaches. These high reserve margins could be achieved for relatively small Demand Response... [more]

Keywords: lithium batteries, los minimization, Modular Multilevel Converters, optimization methods.
In the developing context of distributed generation and flexible smart grids, in order to realize electrochemical storage systems, Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) represent an interesting alternative to the more traditional Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs). This paper presents a novel analytical investigation of electrochemical cell power losses in MMCs and their dependence on the injected common mode voltage. Steady-state cell losses are calculated under Nearest Level Control (NLC) modulation for MMCs equipped with a large number of half-bridge modules, each directly connected to an elementary electrochemical cell. The total cell losses of both a Single Star MMC (SS-MMC) and a Double Star MMC (DS MMC) are derived and compared to the loss of a VSI working under the same conditions. An optimum common mode voltage injection law is developed, leading to the minimum cell losses possible. In the worst case, it achieves a 17.5% reduction in cell losses compared to conventional injection... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: metering systems, optimal metering, Optimization, power quality.
Quality of power supply in power distribution systems requires continuous measurement using power quality analyzers installed in the grid. The paper reviews the published methods for optimal location of metering points in distribution systems in the context of power quality metering and assessment. Three methods have been selected for detailed analysis and comparative tests. It has been found that utilization of the methods is possible, but their performance varies highly depending on the test grid’s topology. Since the methods rely on the state estimation approach, their performance is strictly related to observability analysis. It has been found that standard observability analysis used for typical state estimation problem yields ambiguous results when applied to power quality assessment. Inherited properties of the selected methods are also analyzed, which allows for the formulation of general recommendations about optimal selection of metering points in a distribution system.
