Cost-Effective Outage Management in Smart Grid under Single, Multiple, and Critical Fault Conditions through Teaching−Learning Algorithm
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: capacitor placement, DGs, distribution system, faults, Optimization, service restoration, teaching–learning algorithm.
A distribution system becomes the most essential part of a power system as it links the utility and utility customers. Under abnormal conditions of the system, a definitive goal of the utility is to provide continuous power supply to the customers. This demands a fast restoration process and provision of optimal solutions without violating the power system operational constraints. The main objective of the proposed work is to reduce the service restoration cost (SRC) along with the elimination of the out-of-service loads. In addition, this work concentrates on the minimal usage and finding of optimal locations for additional equipment, such as capacitor placement (CP) and distributed generators (DGs). This paper proposes a two-stage strategy, namely, the service restoration phase and optimization phase. The first phase ensures the restoration of the system from the fault condition, and the second phase identifies the optimal solution with reconfiguration, CP, and DG placement. The opti... [more]

Reactive Power Optimization and Price Management in Microgrid Enabled with Blockchain
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: blockchain, differential evolution, microgrid, Optimization, power loss, reactive power.
The energy market is gradually changing from centralized trading to peer-to-peer trading due to the tremendous increase in a microgrid with green energy resources. When more generating units are included in the microgrid, the possibilities of more reactive power flows exist in the system that leads to high transmission loss which has to be optimized. The reactive power is one of the essential ancillary services in the microgrid towards preserving the voltage in the transmission and distribution line. The major contribution of the paper is towards managing the ancillary service in the distributed energy network economically and technically. This study aims to estimate and optimize the power loss, reactive power, and price management as well. Towards optimization, the self-balanced differential evolution algorithm (SBDE) is used in this study. A distribution system operator is involved in coordinating the sellers and buyers. The proposed layered microgrid architecture uses the blockchain... [more]

Flexible Kinetic Energy Release Controllers for a Wind Farm in an Islanding System
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), kinetic energy, load frequency control (LFC), Particle Swarm Optimization, wind farm.
To improve frequency nadir following a disturbance and avoid under-frequency load shedding, two types of flexible kinetic energy release controllers for the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are proposed. The basic idea is to release only a small amount of kinetic energy stored at the DFIG in the initial transient period (1−3 s after the disturbance). When the frequency dip exceeds a preset threshold, the amount of kinetic energy released is increased to improve the frequency nadir. To achieve the goal of flexible kinetic energy release, a deactivation function based integral controller is first presented. To further improve the dynamic frequency response under parameter uncertainties and external disturbances, a second flexible kinetic energy release controller is designed using a proportional-integral controller, with the gains being adapted in real-time with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Based on the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results for a local power system, it is... [more]

Robust Optimal Operation Strategy for a Hybrid Energy System Based on Gas-Fired Unit, Power-to-Gas Facility and Wind Power in Energy Markets
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: day-ahead energy market clearing, highly flexible gas-fired power units (GFUs), integrated optimal bidding strategy, power-to-gas conversion technology (P2G), robust optimization approach, wind power unit (WPU).
Gas-fired power units (GFUs) are the best technology in recent years due to lower natural gas prices, higher energy transformation performance, and lower CO2 emission, as compared to the conventional power units (CPUs). A permanent storage facility called power-to-gas (P2G) technology can provide adaptation of ever-increasing renewable energy sources (RESs) fluctuations in power system operations, as well as reduce dependency to buy natural gas from the gas network. High investment and utilization expenditures of state-of-the-art P2G technology do not lead to economically effective operation individually. Therefore, in the present paper, an integrated GFUs-P2G-wind power unit (WPU) system is proposed to determine its optimal bidding strategy in the day-ahead energy market. A robust optimization approach is also taken into account to accommodate the proposed bidding strategy within the electricity price uncertainty environment. This problem was studied by using a case study that include... [more]

Heuristic Optimization of Overloading Due to Electric Vehicles in a Low Voltage Grid
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles, heuristic, low voltage, network, Optimization.
It is important to understand the effect of increasing electric vehicles (EV) penetrations on the existing electricity transmission infrastructure and to find ways to mitigate it. While, the easiest solution is to opt for equipment upgrades, the potential for reducing overloading, in terms of voltage drops, and line loading by way of optimization of the locations at which EVs can charge, is significant. To investigate this, a heuristic optimization approach is proposed to optimize EV charging locations within one feeder, while minimizing nodal voltage drops, cable loading and overall cable losses. The optimization approach is compared to typical unoptimized results of a monte-carlo analysis. The results show a reduction in peak line loading in a typical benchmark 0.4 kV by up to 10%. Further results show an increase in voltage available at different nodes by up to 7 V in the worst case and 1.5 V on average. Optimization for a reduction in transmission losses shows insignificant savings... [more]

Biogas Plant Exploitation in a Middle-Sized Dairy Farm in Poland: Energetic and Economic Aspects
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biogas plant, energetic optimization, manure, substrates, wheat straw.
Although cow manure is a valuable natural fertilizer, it is also a source of extreme greenhouse gas emissions, mainly methane. For this reason, this study aims to determine the impact of investments in a biogas plant on the energy and economic aspects of the operation of a dairy farm. A farm with a breeding size of 600 livestock units (LSU) was adopted for the analysis. In order to reach the paper’s aim, the analysis of two different scenarios of dairy farm functioning (conventional−only milk production, and modern−with biogas plant exploitation) was conducted. The analysis showed that the investment in biogas plant operations at a dairy farm and in using cow manure as one of the main substrates is a more profitable scenario compared to traditional dairy farming. Taking into account the actual Polish subsidies for electricity produced by small biogas plants, the scenario with a functioning biogas plant with a capacity of 500 kW brings €332,000/a more profit compared to the conventional... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: conditional value at risk, improved multi-layer artificial bee colony algorithm, risk-based hybrid demand response, two-stage optimization, uncertainties.
Owing to the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, distributed energy resources (DERs) become inevitably uncertain, and microgrid operators have difficulty in operating the power systems because of this uncertainty. In this study, we propose a two-stage optimization approach with a hybrid demand response program (DRP) considering a risk index for microgrids (MGs) under uncertainty. The risk-based hybrid DRP is presented to reduce both operational costs and uncertainty effect using demand response elasticity. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization that considers not only the expected operation costs but also risk expense of uncertainty. To address the optimization problem, an improved multi-layer artificial bee colony (IML-ABC) is incorporated into the MG operation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a numerical analysis based on a typical low-voltage grid-connected MG. As a result, the proposed approach can reduce the opera... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy calculation of gun firing system, Energy Conversion, energy distribution, Energy Efficiency, uncertain optimization.
Gun firing is a process that converts propellant chemical energy to projectile kinetic energy and other kinds of energies. In order to explore the energy conversion process, firstly, the interior ballistics mathematical model and the barrel-projectile finite element model are built and solved. Then, the related variable values and energy values are obtained and discussed. Finally, for improving energy efficiency, the interval uncertainty optimization problem is modeled, and then solved using the two-layer nested optimization strategy and back-propagation (BP) neural network surrogate model. Calculation results show that, after optimization, the heat efficiency raises from 31.13% to 33.05% and the max rifling stress decreases from 893.68 to 859.76 Mpa, which would improve the firing performance and prolong the lifetime of the gun barrel.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bidirectionally chargeable electric vehicles, continuous intraday trading, day-ahead market, intraday auction, mixed integer linear optimization, revenues potentials of EVs, smart charging, spot markets, unmanaged charging, V2G.
Replacing traditional internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) proves to be challenging for the transport sector, particularly due to the higher initial investment. As EVs could be more profitable by participating in the electricity markets, the aim of this paper is to investigate revenue potentials when marketing bidirectionally chargeable electric vehicles in the spot market. To simulate a realistic marketing behavior of electric vehicles, a mixed integer linear, rolling horizon optimization model is formulated considering real trading times in the day-ahead and intraday market. Results suggest that revenue potentials are strongly dependent on the EV pool, the user behavior and the regulatory framework. Modeled potential revenues of EVs of current average size marketed with 2019 German day-ahead prices are found to be at around 200 €/EV/a, which is comparable to other findings in literature, and go up to 500 €/EV/a for consecutive trading in German day-ahead a... An Improved Inverse-Time Over-Current Protection Method for a Microgrid with Optimized Acceleration and Coordination
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: coordination optimization, distributed generation, inverse-time over-current protection, microgrid.
This paper presents an improved inverse-time over-current protection method based on the compound fault acceleration factor and the beetle antennae search (BAS) optimization method for a microgrid. In this paper, a new Time Dial Setting (TDS) of inverse-time protection is developed by applying a compound fault acceleration factor, which can notably accelerate the speed of protection by using low-voltage and short-circuit impedance during the fault. In order to improve the protection coordination, the BAS algorithm is then used to optimize the protection parameters of the... [more]
