April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANSYS CFX, complex urban geometry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, experimental measurements, turbulent flow, validation study, wind regime.
This research presents a validation methodology for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assessments of rooftop wind regime in urban environments. A case study is carried out at the Donadeo Innovation Centre for Engineering building at the University of Alberta campus. A numerical assessment of rooftop wind regime around buildings of the University of Alberta North campus has been performed by using 3D steady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equations, on a large-scale high-resolution grid using the ANSYS CFX code. Two methods of standard deviation (SDM) and average (AM) were introduced to compare the numerical results with the corresponding measurements. The standard deviation method showed slightly better agreements between the numerical results and measurements compared to the average method, by showing the average wind speed errors of 10.8% and 17.7%, and wind direction deviation of 8.4° and 12.3°, for incident winds from East and South, respectively. However, the average error betwee... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer model, PSZ porous absorber, volumetric effect, volumetric heat transfer coefficient.
Reticulate porous ceramic reactors use foam-type absorbers in their operation which must fulfill two essential functions: favoring the volumetric effect and increasing the mass and heat transfer by acting as a support for the reactive materials. Heating these absorbers with highly inhomogeneous concentrate irradiation induces high thermal gradients that affect their thermal performance. Owing to the critical function of these component in the reactor, it is necessary to define a selection criterion for the foam-type absorbers. In this work, we performed an experimental and numerical thermal analysis of three partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) foam-type absorbers with pore density of 10, 20, and 30 PPI (pores per inch) used as a volumetric absorber. A numerical model and an analytical approximation were developed to reproduce experimental results, and calculate the thermal conductivity, as well as volumetric heat transfer coefficient. The results show that an increase in pore density l... [more]

Thomas Lobsinger, Timm Hieronymus, Hubert Schwarze, Gunther Brenner.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balanced vane pump, Computational Fluid Dynamics, internal gear pump, multiphase flow, positive displacement pumps, tumbling multi-chamber pump.
The efficiency requirements for hydraulic pumps applied in automatic transmissions in future generations of automobiles will increase continuously. In addition, the pumps must be able to cope with multiphase flows to a certain extent. Given this background, a balanced vane pump (BVP), an internal gear pump (IGP) and a three-dimensional geared tumbling multi chamber (TMC) pump are analyzed and compared by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach with ANSYS CFX and TwinMesh. Furthermore, test bench measurements are conducted to obtain experimental data to validate the numerical results. The obtained numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. In the first CFD setup, the conveying characteristics of the pumps with pure oil regarding volumetric efficiencies, cavitation onset and pressure ripple are compared. Both the IGP and the BVP show high volumetric efficiencies and low pressure ripples whereas the TMC shows a weaker performance regarding these object... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Aspen Plus, COP, economic analysis, heat pump, waste heat.
Industrial circulating cooling water contains a large amount of low-quality energy, which is lost to the environment through cooling towers. It is of great significance and potential to recover the waste heat to improve energy-saving effects and economic efficiency. However, the effect of common water harvesting and energy saving devices is not significant. Heat pumps have been shown to be effective in improving low-quality heat energy in energy conversion systems, although there are not many applications of heat pump scenarios in engineering practice. Based on this, a recovery solution of circulating cooling water waste heat and water resource using lithium bromide absorption heat pump has been put forward. The energy-saving performance of the recovery system was simulated and analyzed using Aspen Plus V10.0 (Bedford, MA, USA) to explore the effects of the parameters of the working medium in evaporators, condensers, absorbers, generators, heat exchangers, etc., and the modelling resul... Modelling of a Torrefaction Process Using Thermal Model Object
Alok Dhaundiyal, Laszlo Toth.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element method, Joule heating, numerical solution, PDE, thermal history, torrefaction.
So far, the torrefaction process has been merely discussed based on the physical and chemical characteristics of the final product, but the mechanism has not been yet pondered and investigated. Thus far, microwave torrefaction has been predominately used for thermal pre-treatment; therefore, a paradigm shift in the methodology has been introduced by using a Joule heating system. The article mainly focuses on the thermal engineering aspect of the torrefaction process. The densified black pine underwent thermal pre-treatment at a temperature of 523 K. The furnace used for torrefaction was initially improvised to carry out thermal degradation at quasi-static/dynamic conditions. A 3D PDE thermal model was developed to determine the numerical solution and temperature distribution across a black pine pellet. To compare the effect of the linear ramping profile, time-dependent as well as fixed Dirichlet conditions were applied to the proposed model. The mass distribution, duration of the torre... [more]

Jan Maciej Kościelny, Michał Syfert, Paweł Wnuk.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diagnostic reasoning, fault isolation, industrial processes, symptoms dynamics.
The paper analyses the research problem of conducting diagnostic reasoning for dynamic objects to eliminate the possibility of formulating false diagnoses resulting from different delays of the symptoms related to a particular fault while simultaneously striving to obtain high distinguishability. The research aimed to develop a new diagnostic inference method robust to symptom delays and characterised by high accuracy of generated diagnosis. Known methods ensuring the correctness of inference in the case of symptom delays but at the cost of reducing distinguishability of faults have been characterised. A new inference method was developed, which uses the three-valued residual evaluation and knowledge regarding elementary symptom sequences. A formal description of the diagnosing system and the proposed method are given. The method of obtaining the knowledge about the order of symptoms based on a cause-and-effect graph and was characterised. The method’s effectiveness was presented in si... [more]

Tomasz Kolerski, Parisa Radan, Dariusz Gąsiorowski.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: floating photovoltaic system, ice load, mathematical modeling, wind effect.
Nowadays, based upon human needs and preferring perpetual types of energy, photovoltaic system (PV) is a suitable alternative and more frequently used in northern countries, which are recently more attracted by solar power. The new floating type of the structure is installed in the water bodies instead of land. One of the main elements in floating photovoltaic structures is the forces imposed on the panels. In the northern regions, the dominant load is considered to be ice interaction with the structure. This study aims at identifying the loads imposed on a floating PV structure located in the Łapino Reservoir on the Radunia River, which are produced by the wind action on the ice cover. The wind velocity varying between 10 and 26 m/s is implemented, and also the reduction of the pool level was studied. Wind direction plays an important role in the inclination and expansion of ice accumulation. Moreover, the magnitude of wind velocity is a determinative factor in the maximum thickness e... [more]

Tommaso Bradde, Samuel Chevalier, Marco De Stefano, Stefano Grivet-Talocia, Luca Daniel.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power system dynamics, real-time modeling, vector fitting.
This paper develops a predictive modeling algorithm, denoted as Real-Time Vector Fitting (RTVF), which is capable of approximating the real-time linearized dynamics of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dynamical systems via rational transfer function matrices. Based on a generalization of the well-known Time-Domain Vector Fitting (TDVF) algorithm, RTVF is suitable for online modeling of dynamical systems which experience both initial-state decay contributions in the measured output signals and concurrently active input signals. These adaptations were specifically contrived to meet the needs currently present in the electrical power systems community, where real-time modeling of low frequency power system dynamics is becoming an increasingly coveted tool by power system operators. After introducing and validating the RTVF scheme on synthetic test cases, this paper presents a series of numerical tests on high-order closed-loop generator systems in the IEEE 39-bus test system.

Keywords: absorption layer, perovskite, photonic crystal, solar cell, two-dimensional.
A two-dimensional perovskite photonic crystal structure of Methylamine lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, MAPbI3) is rationally designed as the absorption layer for solar cells. The photonic crystal (PC) structure possesses the distinct “slow light” and band gap effect, leading to the increased absorption efficiency of the absorption layer, and thus the increased photoelectric conversion efficiency of the battery. Simulation results indicate that the best absorption efficiency can be achieved when the scattering element of indium arsenide (InAs) cylinder is arranged in the absorption layer in the form of tetragonal lattice with the height of 0.6 μm, the diameter of 0.24 μm, and the lattice constant of 0.4 μm. In the wide wavelength range of 400−1200 nm, the absorption efficiency can be reached up to 82.5%, which is 70.1% higher than that of the absorption layer without the photonic crystal structure. In addition, the absorption layer with photonic crystal structure has good adaptability to the i... [more]

Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, climate change mitigation, Energy Efficiency, EU Green Deal, national building stock, Paris Agreement, scenarios modelling.
One of the major anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gases is the operation of building stock. Improving its energy efficiency has the potential to significantly contribute to achieving climate change mitigation targets. The purpose of this study was to roughly estimate such potential for the operation of the national building stock of Czechia to steer the national debate on the development of related national plans. The estimation is based on a simplified energy model of the Czech building stock that consists of sub-models of residential and nonresidential building stocks, for which their future energy consumptions, shares of energy carriers and sources, and emission factors were modeled in four scenarios. Uncertainties from the approximation of the emission factors were investigated in a sensitivity analysis. The results showed that the operation of the Czech building stock in 2016 totaled 36.9 Mt CO2, which represented 34.6% of the total national carbon dioxide emissions. The four b... [more]
Semi-Analytical Solution to Assess CO2 Leakage in the Subsurface through Abandoned Wells
Tian Qiao, Hussein Hoteit, Marwan Fahs.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abandoned wells, analytical solution, CCS, CO2 storage, leakage, pressure transient analysis.
Geological carbon storage is an effective method capable of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at significant scales. Subsurface reservoirs with sealing caprocks can provide long-term containment for the injected fluid. Nevertheless, CO2 leakage is a major concern. The presence of abandoned wells penetrating the reservoir caprock may cause leakage flow-paths for CO2 to the overburden. Assessment of time-varying leaky wells is a need. In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytical approach based on pressure-transient analysis to model the behavior of CO2 leakage and corresponding pressure distribution within the storage site and the overburden. Current methods assume instantaneous leakage of CO2 occurring with injection, which is not realistic. In this work, we employ the superposition in time and space to solve the diffusivity equation in 2D radial flow to approximate the transient pressure in the reservoirs. Fluid and rock compressibilities are taken into consideration, which al... [more]
Two-Phase Liquid−Liquid Flow in the Aspect of Reduction of Pumping Power of Hydrophobic Substances with High Viscosity
Jerzy Hapanowicz.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drag flow reduction, flow in pipe, highly viscous oil, liquid–liquid system, power of pumping.
The paper reports the results of a study into a method of estimating the level of power/energy reduction needed for pumping highly viscous hydrophobic liquids. The effect of reducing the flow resistance resulting from feeding an adequate volume of water into the flow tube is considered. The polar parameters of water selected for analysis are different than oil. Experimental studies were not carried out in this regard, since the commonly accessible equation expressing the resistance of two-phase liquid−liquid flow was utilized to develop the method discussed in this study. On its basis, simulations were carried out to determine the conditions and level of reduction of the two-phase flow resistance in comparison to the single-phase flow resistance of a highly viscous oily liquid. The analysis of the results provided means for determination of such ranges of variations in the flow parameters of the two-phase liquid−liquid system, in which the total power of pumps applied to pump both liqu... Keywords: ANSYS coupled analysis, CFD simulation, conduction, convection, electromagnetic analysis, FEM simulations, heat distribution, low-voltage switchgear, radiation, thermal analysis.
The manuscript presents advanced coupled analysis: Maxwell 3D, Transient Thermal and Fluent CFD, at the time of a rated current occurring on the main busbars in the low-voltage switchgear. The simulations were procured in order to aid the design process of such enclosures. The analysis presented the rated current flow in the switchgear busbars, which allowed determining their temperature values. The main assumption of the simulation was measurements of temperature rise during rated current conditions. Simulating such conditions is a valuable asset in order to design better solutions for energy distribution gear. The simulation model was a precise representation of the actual prototype of the switchgear. Simulations results were validated by experimental research. The heat dissipation in busbars and switchgear housing through air convection was presented. The temperature distribution for the insulators in the rail bridge made of fireproof material was considered: halogen-free polyester.... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow patterns, gas–liquid flow, modelling the pressure drop, open-cell metal foam, pressure drop, single flow.
This paper describes experimental investigations of single-phase and two-phase gas−liquid flow through channels with a diameter of 20 mm and length of 2690 mm, filled with metal foams. Three types of aluminium foams with pore densities of 20, 30 and 40 PPI and porosities ranging from 29.9% to 94.3% were used. Air, water and oil were pumped through the foams. The tests covered laminar, transitional and turbulent flow. We demonstrated that the Reynolds number, in which the hydraulic dimension should be defined based on foam porosity and pore diameter de = ϕdp/(1 − ϕ), can be used as a flow regime assessment criterion. It has been found that fluid pressure drops when flowing through metal foams significantly depends on the cell size and porosity of the foam, as well as the shape of the foam skeleton. The flow patterns had a significant influence on the pressure drop. Among other things, we observed a smaller pressure drop when plug flow changed to stratified flow. We developed a model to... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy performance, heat transfer, optimal design, ventilated window.
Ventilated windows have the potential to contribute to both indoor air quality and energy efficiency in cold climates. A typical ventilated window functions as a solar collector under inward air flow direction and incident solar radiation. The ventilated window is a modification of the multiple pane windows in which air is drawn in from outside and is heated through conduction, convection, and radiation in the cavity. In this study, a detailed parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the thermal performance of ventilated windows and their capacity to preheat ventilation air. High-resolution 3D steady RANS computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were performed for six ventilated window geometries. Model results were compared with measurements. The following geometric characteristics were evaluated in detail: (i) The height of the window, (ii) the width of the cavity, (iii) the location of double-layered glazing, and (iv) the width of the supply air opening. Keywords: constricted channel, heat transfer analysis, hybrid nanofluid, pulsatile flow, single-wall carbon nanotube.
Heat transfer analysis of the pulsatile flow of a hybrid nanofluid through a constricted channel under the impact of a magnetic field and thermal radiation is presented. Hybrid nanofluids form a new class of nanofluids, distinguished by the thermal properties and functional utilities for improving the heat transfer rate. The behaviors of a water-based copper nanofluid and water-based copper plus a single-wall carbon nanotube, i.e., (Cu−SWCNT/water), hybrid nanofluid over each of velocity, wall shear stress, and temperature profiles, are visualized graphically. The time-dependent governing equations of the incompressible fluid flow are transformed to the vorticity-stream function formulation and solved numerically using the finite difference method. The laminar flow simulations are carried out in 2D for simplicity as the flow profiles are assumed to vary only in the 2D plane represented by the 2D Cartesian geometry. The streamlines and vorticity contours are also shown to demonstrate th... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical motor, fill factor, measurement, Modelling, probability, synchronous machine, thermal model, winding model.
The operational reliability and high efficiency of modern electrical machines depend on the ability to transfer heat in the construction parts of the machine. Therefore, many authors study various thermal models and work on the development of effective heat dissipation. New insights and methods lead to improved techniques for the thermal design of electrical machines. This paper presents an experimentally validated thermal model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with an improved slot winding model. It also deals with various approaches to homogenization and equivalent material properties of a tooth-coil winding sub-model. First, an algorithm for building a lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) of PMSM is described and its properties and problems are discussed. Subsequently, a sub-model of a slot with a winding based on the finite element method (FEM) is introduced. This sub-model is able to generate different conductor distributions based on probabilistic methods for a s... [more]
Prediction of Abrasive and Impact Wear Due to Multi-Shaped Particles in a Centrifugal Pump via CFD-DEM Coupling Method
Cheng Tang, You-Chao Yang, Peng-Zhan Liu, Youn-Jea Kim.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abrasive and impact wear, centrifugal pump, CFD-DEM coupling method, particle shape.
Since solid particles suspended in the fluid can cause wear in centrifugal pumps, intensive attention has been focused on the numerical prediction for the wear of flow parts in centrifugal pumps. However, most numerical studies have focused on only one wear model and a sphere particle model. The impact of particle shape on the wear of flow parts in centrifugal pumps is under-studied, particularly considering abrasive and impact wear simultaneously. In this work, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupling method with an abrasive and impact wear prediction model was adopted to study the wear characteristics of a centrifugal pump. Moreover, four regular polyhedron particles and a sphere particle with the same equivalent diameter but different sphericity were mainly analyzed. The results demonstrate that more particles move closer to the blade pressure side in the impeller passage, and particles tend to cluster in specific areas within the volute as spher... [more]

Keywords: BDFRM, electrical machines, machine design, magnetic design, reluctance, variable speed drive.
The brushless doubly fed reluctance machine (BDFRM) is receiving an increased amount of attention from the research community thanks to its potential as an alternative drive for variable speed applications, both as motor and generator. Currently, the sizing of the BDFRM in the literature is based on the model of an ideal axially laminated rotor (ALR) and discrepancies are hidden in compensation factors which are in turn tuned with a finite element analysis (FEA). This paper proposes an analytical framework to accurately model the air gap field modulation, and by extension the torque density, of the BDFRM with ducted segmental rotor (DSR) and salient pole rotor (SPR). The results are verified with FEA and validated on a BDFRM prototype.

Keywords: compact electrothermal model, IGBT, Modelling, self-heating, SPICE, thermal phenomena.
This paper proposes a new compact electrothermal model of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) dedicated for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis). This model makes it possible to compute the non-isothermal DC characteristics of the considered transistor and the waveforms of terminal voltages and currents of the investigated device and its internal temperature at transients. This model takes into account the nonlinearity of thermal phenomena in this device. The form of the formulated model is described and the problem of estimating its parameter values is discussed. The correctness of the proposed model was verified experimentally both at DC operation and at transients. The obtained results are compared to the results of computations performed with the use of the classical literature model. A very good agreement between the results of measurements and computations performed with the new model is obtained at different cooling conditions and in a wide range... [more]
Relative Permeability: A Critical Parameter in Numerical Simulations of Multiphase Flow in Porous Media
Nathan Moodie, William Ampomah, Wei Jia, Brian McPherson.
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geologic carbon storage, multi-phase flow simulation, relative permeability.
Effective multiphase flow and transport simulations are a critical tool for screening, selection, and operation of geological CO2 storage sites. The relative permeability curve assumed for these simulations can introduce a large source of uncertainty. It significantly impacts forecasts of all aspects of the reservoir simulation, from CO2 trapping efficiency and phase behavior to volumes of oil, water, and gas produced. Careful consideration must be given to this relationship, so a primary goal of this study is to evaluate the impacts on CO2-EOR model forecasts of a wide range of relevant relative permeability curves, from near linear to highly curved. The Farnsworth Unit (FWU) is an active CO2-EOR operation in the Texas Panhandle and the location of our study site. The Morrow ‘B’ Sandstone, a clastic formation composed of medium to coarse sands, is the target storage formation. Results indicate that uncertainty in the relative permeability curve can impart a significant impact on model... [more]

Keywords: ANSYS Fluent, Computational Fluid Dynamics, FDS, tunnel airflow, tunnel fires.
The efficiency of tunnels systems is often evaluated using numerical simulations. This concerns both to normal and emergency mode of tunnel systems operation. Therefore the safety level of tunnel users may depend on the quality of numerical models being built. The most often studied areas cover the researches on natural and forced airflows in the normal mode and on fire development and smoke spreading in the emergency mode as well as modeling of fan operation. Thus, many software packages implementing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are applied here. Despite the available software is recognized as reliable, the problem arises because the built numerical models should be validated at least partially with experimental data. There is a shortage of experimental data from real tunnels due to high costs and many organizational or formal difficulties. Some researchers use data from scaled experiments, but this leads to problems connected with scaling. The paper presents the application of... [more]

The finite element analysis (FEA) is an essential and powerful numerical method that can explicitly optimize the design process of electrical devices. In this paper, the employment of the finite element method (FEM) as ANSYS is proposed in order to aid electrical apparatus engineering and modeling of low voltage modular circuit breakers. The procured detailed model of a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) was undergoing transient thermal simulations of the current path. Acquired data were juxtapositioned with experimental data procured in the laboratory. The reflection of the simulation approach was clearly noted in the experimental results. Mutual areas of the modeled element expressed similar physical properties and robustness errors while tested in the specific conditions—faithfully reflecting those that were experimented with. Moreover, the physical phenomena essential for electrical engineering could be determined on the model stage. These types of 3D models can be used to analyze the... [more]

Keywords: brake dust particles, brake dynamometer, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), enclosure, Lagrangian multiphase model.
The harmfulness of fine dust generated by automobile brakes to the environment has recently received attention. Therefore, we aimed to analyze and regulate the brake wear particles in dynamometers. To accurately measure the number of particles and particle mass, the sampling system used needs to minimize transportation losses and reduce the residence time in the brake enclosure system. The brake dust measurement system currently used can estimate the main transportation loss but cannot evaluate the complex flow field in the brake enclosure system under different design conditions. We used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to predict the behavior of brake wear particles and analyze the static pressure characteristics, the uniformity of the system flow, and the residence time of the brake dust particles in the system. In addition, we compared the design of the basic structure of the brake enclosure system, combined with the four factors affecting the design of the brake dynam... [more]
