Performance Analysis of a 300 MW Coal-Fired Power Unit during the Transient Processes for Peak Shaving
Chunlai Yang, Xiaoguang Hao, Qijun Zhang, Heng Chen, Zhe Yin, Fei Jin
May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal-fired power plant, dynamic characteristics, performance optimization, power regulation, transient simulation
A simulation model based on Dymola modelling was developed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of automatic generation control (AGC) for variable-load thermal power units in this study. Specifically, a 300 MW unit from a power plant in northern China was used to verify the model’s validity in steady-state processes and to analyze the behavior of the main thermal parameters under different rates of load changes. The economic performance of the unit under different rates of load changes is also analyzed by combining the economic indexes of “two regulations” in the power grid. Results indicate that as the rate of load changes increases, boiler output, main steam temperature, reheat steam temperature, main steam pressure, and working temperatures of various equipment fluctuate more intensely. Specifically, at a rate of load reduction of 2.0% Pe MW/min, the maximum deviation of the main steam temperature can reach 7.6 °C, with the screen-type superheater experiencing the largest heat... May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel cell, gas flow channel, Hydrogen, hydrogen-powered vehicle, micro porous layer, optimal configuration, polymer electrolyte membrane, power output
As we move away from internal combustion engines to tackle climate change, the importance of hydrogen-powered vehicles and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology has dramatically increased. In the present study, we aimed to determine the optimal configuration for the power output of a PEMFC system using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to analyse variations of the primary serpentine design of gas flow channels. This helps improve efficiency and save on valuable materials used, reducing potential carbon emissions from the production of hydrogen vehicles. Different numbers of serpentine gas channels were represented with various spacing between them, within the defined CFD model, to optimise the gas channel geometry. The results show that the optimum configuration was found to have 11 serpentine channels with a spacing of 3.25 mm. In this optimum configuration, the ratio between the channel width, channel spacing, and serpentine channel length was found to... [more]

May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-cooled condenser, cluster analysis, fan group, natural wind speed model, partition strategy, speed regulation, transient numerical simulation
This study discusses the influence of natural wind on the air flow of air-cooled condensers (ACCs) and then proposes a partition speed-regulation strategy for a fan group with enhanced generalized capability, which is of great practical significance for optimizing energy-saving operations. The stochastic time-varying features of natural wind are characterized by sine−Gaussian, Weibull, and composed winds. In a natural wind disturbance, using the Sugon Supercomputing Center, the transient numerical simulation of the dynamic evolution of the ACC flow field was found: the dynamic system of air flow is a typical time-varying nonlinear process. Cluster analysis was used to extract the nonlinear features of air flow, divide the fan group into four subregions with generalization capability, and implement a partitioned speed operation. It was found that giving priority to increasing the fan speed in the headwind partition can suppress the natural wind disturbance and improve the overall air fl... [more]
An Overview of Possibilities of Increasing the Permissible Speed of Underground Suspended Monorails for Transporting People in the Conditions of Polish Underground Mining

May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: braking algorithm, mining monorails, numerical simulations, safety, transport, travel speed, underground mining
The permissible speed of suspended monorails in underground mines is determined by the internal regulations of each country and depends on the type of transportation. In the case of passenger transportation, the maximal driving speed in Polish underground mining regulations is 2 ms−1. Regarding the higher permitted driving speed in other countries, it is reasonable to consider changes to these regulations that would raise the permitted speed limit. Increasing the permissible travel speed would improve the efficiency of mining operations because of the significant reduction in the inefficient working time of miners traveling on the monorail from the shaft to their place of work. However, at the same time, an increase in the permissible speed of travel results in higher values of forces and accelerations affecting both the crew riding the train and the underground working infrastructure (the suspended route, slings, and arches yielding support). The results of the series of works carried... [more]
Robust Eddy Viscosity Turbulence Modeling with Elliptic Relaxation and Compound Wall Treatment
Mirza Popovac
May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence modeling, wall functions
This paper presents a holistic Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) turbulence modeling framework for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of complex wall-bounded turbulent flows. Based on the elliptic relaxation idea, the deployed eddy viscosity turbulence model reconstructs the near-wall stress anisotropy and nonviscous effects. The appropriate selection of the turbulent quantities that are being solved for, together with the zero value wall boundary condition for the related turbulent quantities, renders the model less sensitive to the near-wall grid nonuniformities and resolution. The unified near-wall velocity profile, obtained based on the boundary layer theory, is used to devise the compound near-wall treatment that ensures the robustness of the numerical simulation. The proposed turbulence modeling framework is implemented into the general-purpose open-source CFD code and validated against the generic test cases with satisfactory agreement.
Heat Transfer Coefficient Distribution—A Review of Calculation Methods
Piotr Duda
May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat and mass transfer analogy, inverse heat conduction, local HTC, temperature measurement
Determination of the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distribution is important during the design and operation of many devices in microelectronics, construction, the car industry, drilling, the power industry and research on nuclear fusion. The first part of the manuscript shows works describing how a change in the coefficient affects the operation of devices. Next, various methods of determining the coefficient are presented. The most common method to determine the HTC is the use of Newton’s law of cooling. If this method cannot be applied directly, there are other methods that can be found in the open literature. They use analytical formulations, the lumped thermal capacity assumption, the 1D unsteady heat conduction equation for a semi-infinite wall, the fin model, energy conservation and the analogy between heat and mass transfer. The HTC distribution can also be calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling if all boundary conditions with fluid and solid prop... [more]

Keywords: interpretability, LIME, Machine Learning, SHAP, well productivity
Accurately predicting well productivity is crucial for optimizing gas production and maximizing recovery from tight gas reservoirs. Machine learning (ML) techniques have been applied to build predictive models for the well productivity, but their high complexity and low interpretability can hinder their practical application. This study proposes using interpretable ML solutions, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME), to provide explicit explanations of the ML prediction model. The study uses data from the Eastern Sulige tight gas field in the Ordos Basin, China, containing various geological and engineering factors. The results show that the gradient boosting decision tree model exhibits superior predictive performance compared to other ML models. The global interpretation using SHAP provides insights into the overall impact of these factors, while the local interpretation using SHAP and LIME offers individualized explanations o... [more]

Keywords: cementing, displacement efficiency, dynamic equivalent circulation density, horizontal well, pad fluid
The failure of wellbore sealing will cause leakage of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which will harm oil and gas recovery and environmental safety. Cementing is an important part of wellbore sealing. Only good cementing can keep the wellbore seal for a long time and improve the well life. In this study, we considered the construction of a horizontal shale oil well in eastern China as the background and analysed the rheological properties of the annulus fluid. We developed a displacement motion model and a calculation model for the annulus dynamic equivalent circulation density, and numerical simulations were used to study the impact of the dosage and injection sequence of the pad fluid on the displacement efficiency and annulus dynamic equivalent circulation density. The results show that when the pad fluid is composed completely of flushing fluid, the displacement performance is better than that of the spacer. By increasing the dosage of the flushing fluid from... [more]

May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: paddle dryer, parametric analysis, penetration model, two-dimensional heat and mass transfer model
In this paper, we propose a concise but general two-dimensional model based on the penetration model in order to simulate the heat and mass transfer and drying kinetics of sludge in the paddle dryer. The sludge control equations were developed to simulate the heat and mass transfer of sludge and the penetration model was introduced to describe the mixing of sludge. Compared to the experimental results in the existing literature, the drying kinetics simulated simulated by the present model were in good agreement with the experimental data under various operation conditions. The effects of four key parameters on drying kinetics in the paddle dryer were studied. The results showed that the water content increased with the increase of sludge flowrate and the decrease of wall temperature and sludge density. Furthermore, the stirring velocity had little effect on the drying kinetics of the sludge. The present study contributes to the better understanding of the sludge drying kinetics and pro... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, EU DEMO, LOCA, nuclear fusion, two-phase flow, WCLL
The in-vessel Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) is one of the design basis accidents in the design of the EU DEMO tokamak fusion reactor. System-level codes are typically employed to analyse the evolution of these transients. However, being based on a lumped approach, they are unable to quantify localised quantities of interest, such as local pressure peaks on the vacuum vessel walls, to which the failure criteria are linked. To calculate local quantities, the 3D nature of the phenomenon needs to be considered. In this work, a 3D transient model of the in-vessel LOCA from a water-cooled blanket is developed. The model is implemented in the commercial CFD software STAR-CCM+. It simulates the propagation of the water jet in the vessel from the beginning of the accident, thus accounting for the phase change of the water, i.e., from the pressurised liquid phase to the vapour phase inside the vessel, being the latter at a much lower pressure than in the blanket coolant pipes. Due to the large... [more]

Keywords: CFD models, friction factor, lattice brick setting, Nusselt number, surface roughness, tunnel kilns
This paper proposes correlation equations of heat transfer and pressure drop for the design and operation of tunnel kilns loaded with lattice brick settings of different geometrical parameters in the form of Nusselt number and friction factor. The developed correlation equations considered parameters that were not investigated in previous studies, such as the relative roughness of the bricks and the stack channels, and they also extended the Reynolds numbers to a practical range that was not covered before in a simple, practical form. The correlation equations are valid for Reynolds number between 125 and 10,200, Prandtl number between 0.68 and 0.73, brick’s relative roughness between 0.23 and 0.93, voidage fraction between 0.48 and 0.653, and the geometrical parameters of the tested lattice brick settings. The achieved correlations of the Nusselt number and the friction factor are well compared with the available correlations in the literature in their valid range of parameters. It is... [more]

Keywords: adaptive reuse, building efficiency, building information modeling, data analytics, energy savings, geographic information system, multicriteria evaluation tools
Cities are complex and constantly evolving systems where changing social needs have always reshaped the built environment. Considering recent evolutionary trends in housing emergencies, amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and environmental sustainability goals, a rethinking of the building heritage is fundamental. This article aims to promote the conversion of buildings designed initially for nonresidential uses as a process and project strategy based on energy efficiency and a holistic and integrated vision of the circular economy. The methodological approach is based on two main phases: definition of evaluative parameters for the potential reuse of a building, and integration of the evaluation system in a BIM and GIS environment. The result is a tool for rapid automatic pre-evaluation of the potential conversion of a building into a residential space. Applying the developed methodology allows for a practical approach to the significant issue of sustainable construction, with particul... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Simulation, solar chimney, thermal comfort
The aim of using electromechanical air conditioning in buildings is to maintain thermal comfort for its occupants; however, this type of air conditioning represents 40% of the total energy consumption of a building, generating economic and environmental impacts, because fossil fuels are the main source of energy. To reduce the use of electromechanical conditioning, it is possible to take advantage of the climatic conditions of the region to improve its performance. Due to the small number of works that quantitatively support measures aimed at improving the thermal behavior of houses in an integral way and the growth of mass construction in Mexico, in the present work, a solar chimney is incorporated in a typical type of social interest housing in Guanajuato. The incorporation of the solar chimney was simulated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS and evaluated by ASHRAE Standard 55-2017. The selected arrangement induces air flow inside without the need for external f... [more]

Keywords: fire brigade deployment, location analysis, mathematical modeling, service accessibility improvement
The content of this research paper is focused on the applications of selected operation research methods in the field of rescue services. The first theoretical part aims at identifying the most important aspects of the real system, which should be taken into account whenever a rescue system is to be redesigned or optimized. It also contains an in-depth description of system performance. Based on the found criteria, a mathematical model for a new system design is proposed. The second part of this paper is practically oriented. A short case study performed with real data on the rescue service system in Slovakia is reported herein, and the obtained results are compared with current fire brigade deployment. We concentrate on improving the most important criteria of the real system. If the suggested mathematical model proves to be hard to solve with common optimization tools, we will develop an efficient solving algorithm. From a general point of view, the main scientific goal of this resea... [more]

Keywords: multi-factor coupling analysis, numerical simulation, physical model experiment, porous leakage, similar principles, underwater gas pipeline
Natural gas pipeline leaks under the sea will have a significant negative effect on the marine ecosystem, result in significant financial losses, and possibly even harm marine floating objects. The VOF (Volume of Fluid) multi-phase flow model is used to numerically simulate and study the diffusion process of porous leakage in submarine gas pipelines. Experiments confirmed the model’s correctness and dependability. Based on this, the coupling effect and the porous effect of the leakage velocity, the size of the leaked pore, and water velocity of the natural gas pipelines on the diffusion of porous leakage in the submarine gas pipelines are analyzed with the test scheme designed by the orthogonal test method. The similarity principle is used to connect the leakage model with the actual application. The results show that three factors, namely, the leakage velocity, the size of leaked pore, and the water velocity, influence the shape of the air mass, the time when the gas reaches the sea s... Keywords: nanoconfinement, pore network, Simulation, viscosity, wettability
Hydraulic fracturing is an effective method for stimulating reservoirs, making the economic development of ultra-tight shale gas and coalbed methane reservoirs possible. These formations are rich in nanopores, in which the fracturing fluid, such as fresh water, the flow, and the behavior of this flow differ significantly from those described in the classic Navier-Stokes formula. In bulk space, the interaction force exerted by the solid phase can be ignored, but the solid−fluid interaction plays a dominant role in nanoconfinement spaces in which the pore size is comparable to the molecular diameter. Nanoconfined water molecules tend to approach the water-wet pore surface, enhancing the water viscosity, which is a key parameter affecting the water flow capacity. Conversely, water molecules tend to stay in the middle of nanopores when subjected to a hydrophobic surface, leading to a decrease in viscosity. Thus, nanoconfined water viscosity is a function of the strength of the surface−flui... [more]
A Method of Reducing Friction and Improving the Penetration Rate by Safely Vibrating the Drill-String at Surface
Yuan Long, Xueying Wang, Peng Wang, Feifei Zhang
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drill-string mechanics, friction reduction, petroleum drilling, vibration
Drill-string axial vibration at the surface technology is proposed to reduce the friction between the drill-string and the borehole wall, and to improve load transfer efficiency, the rate of penetration (ROP), and the extended-reach limit of a horizontal well. An analytical framework utilizing the “soft-string” model is constructed. The results obtained from numerical simulations reveal that during the slide drilling operation, the drill-string experiences an axial stick−slip motion, and the weight on bit (WOB) undergoes periodic oscillations. The conventional calibration method of the WOB in the weight indicator gauge is not applicable when the ROP is low. After applying axial vibration on the drill-string at the surface, the WOB increases and becomes smooth because of a release of friction. The amplitude and frequency of the exciting force are the main factors affecting surface vibration effectiveness. There is an optimal frequency for a given case (10 Hz in this paper). This means t... Keywords: accelerated pavement test, dynamic axle load, multi-body dynamics, Simulation
The purpose of this paper is to study the actual dynamic load characteristics of a full-scale Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) device called Natural Environment-Automatically Loaded Track (NE-ALT) during its operation. The NEALT uses hydraulic and support reaction forces to apply axle loads, which are somewhat different from real trucks. Therefore, in order to ensure the accuracy of the loading parameters of the device, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic load characteristics of the device during operation. In this paper, a virtual prototype model of the device was established, and the important parameters, including vehicle speed and axle load, were set. The dynamic axle load, dynamic load coefficient, and influential factors of the NE-ALT were analyzed using the model at different speeds, hydraulic pressures, and road roughness. The results have shown that the dynamic axle load accuracy was most affected by speed, followed by road roughness, and then hydraulic cylinder pressure. Co... [more]

Keywords: bioreactor, observers, virtual sensors
The state variables in a biodigester are predicted using an unstructured model, and this study offers an analytical design of a Non-Linear Logistic Observer (NLLO), subsequently comparing its performance to that of other prominent state estimators. Because of variables such as temperature, pH, high pressure, volumetric organic load (VOC), and hydraulic retention time (HRT), among others, biodigester samples can be affected by the use of physical sensors, which are not always practical owing to their sensitivity to the type of sampling and external disturbances. The use of virtual sensors represents one approach to solving this issue. In this work, we suggest experimentally validating a mathematical model, then analytically designing a novel NLLO observer, and finally comparing the results to those obtained using a sliding-mode estimator and a Luenberger observer. By including online CH4 and CO2 measurements as inputs to the proposed observer, the local observability analysis demonstrat... [more]

Keywords: gear dynamics, mechanical impedance, transfer path analysis, vibration isolation, vibratory power flow
In the marine gear system, the vibration of gears is transmitted to the ship foundation through shafts, bearings, housing, and isolators, and then the underwater noise is generated. Analyzing the vibration transfer properties and identifying the critical path can provide guidance to the low-noise design of the gear system. In this paper, a coupled gear-housing-foundation dynamic model is proposed for a flexible supported gear system, in which the flexibility of each subsystem and the coupling relationship between them are taken into account. The transferring process of gear vibration is divided into different layers between gears, shafts, bearings, housing, isolators, and ship foundation. Based on the vibration power flow (VPF) theory, detailed layering vibration transfer path analyses of the gear isolation coupled system are carried out for both location path and direction path, and the main paths are identified in a broad speed range. The results indicate that though the gear vibrati... [more]

Liquid−liquid equilibrium (LLE) data are critical for the design and optimization of processes for extracting aromatics. Partial LLE data for the non-aromatic−aromatic−sulfolane ternary system were acquired at 313.15 K and 101.3 kPa. The LLE data for the extraction of aromatics using sulfolane were predicted using the COSMO-RS model. Correspondingly, the predicted and experimental data were analyzed using the root mean square deviation (RMSD), distribution coefficient (D), and separation factor (S). The COSMO-RS model could better predict the LLE data for the extraction of aromatics by sulfolane. The results of quantum chemical calculation show that hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions between sulfolane−benzene and sulfolane−toluene were responsible for the strong selectivity of sulfolane for benzene and toluene over alkanes. The LLE data predicted by the COSMO-RS method using the UNIQUAC thermodynamic model were subjected to correlation analysis. The calculated RMSD values we... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, DEM-VOF coupling method, mixing tank, vanadium shale
The mixing tank is important equipment for industrial applications in the wet vanadium extraction process, but in practice, there are problems, such as uneven mixing of minerals. In this study, the effect of different types of impellers and different mixing tank structures on the suspended mass of particles was simulated using the discrete element method and volume of fluid method (DEM-VOF). The simulation results show that the round-bottomed tank performed mixing better than the flat-bottomed tank at different particle densities, and the flat-bottomed tank was prone to particle stratification and other phenomena. The round-bottomed mixing tank could better improve the solid−liquid suspension effect. In this study, the coefficient of variation σ was introduced to characterize the suspended mass of particles. By monitoring the σ value, it was found that the blade pitch angle 45 (BPA45) had the best mixing uniformity in the inclined pitched blade turbine (PBT). As the PBT impeller pitch... [more]
