Sen Li, Jinxing Guo, Xin Lv, Teng Deng, Bo Cao, Juan Wang
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), hydrogen pre-cooling system, hydrogen refueling station, shell and tube heat exchanger
In the fast filling process, in order to control the temperature of the vehicle-mounted storage tank not to exceed the upper limit of 85 °C, it is an effective method to add a hydrogen pre-cooling system upstream of the hydrogenation machine. In this paper, Fluent is used to simulate the heat transfer process of high-pressure hydrogen in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and the phase change process of refrigerant R23. The accuracy of the model is proven by a comparison with the data in the references. Using this model, the temperature field and gas volume fraction in the heat transfer process are obtained, which is helpful to analyze the heat transfer mechanism. At the same time, the influence of hydrogen inlet temperature, hydrogen inlet pressure, and refrigerant flow rate on the refrigeration performance was studied. The current work shows that the model can be used to determine the best working parameters in the pre-cooling process and reduce the operating cost of the hydrogen refuel... [more]

Keywords: Absorption, Carbon Dioxide Capture, N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) piperazine, reboiler heat duty, regeneration energy
-(2-Hydroxyethyl) piperazine (HEPZ) has a chemical structure similar to PZ and has less volatility. It is not easy to volatilize in a continuous operation device. It is studied to replace PZ as a promotor to increase the CO2 capture rate. This paper researches the lowest energy consumption and absorbent loss of HEPZ/H2O in the absorption-regeneration process, and compares it with another five amines, including PZ, MEA, 1-MPZ, AMP and DMEA. Based on the thermodynamic model, this work establishes a process simulation based on the equilibrium stage, assuming that all stages of the absorption and desorption towers reach thermodynamic equilibrium and CO2 recovery in the absorption tower is 90%. By optimizing the process parameters, the lowest thermodynamic energy consumption and absorbent loss of process operation are obtained. Our results show that HEPZ as a promotor to replace PZ and MEA has significant economic value. The lowest reboiler energy consumption of HEPZ with the optimal proces... [more]

Modeling Transient Flow in CO2 Injection Wells by Considering the Phase Change
Nian-Hui Wan, Li-Song Wang, Lin-Tong Hou, Qi-Lin Wu, Jing-Yu Xu
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 flow, CO2 fracturing, phase transition, supercritical CO2, wellbore temperature
A transient model to simulate the temperature and pressure in CO2 injection wells is proposed and solved using the finite difference method. The model couples the variability of CO2 properties and conservation laws. The maximum error between the simulated and measured results is 5.04%. The case study shows that the phase state is primarily controlled by the wellbore temperature. Increasing the injection temperature or decreasing the injection rate contributes to obtaining the supercritical state. The variability of density can be ignored when the injection rate is low, but for a high injection rate, ignoring this may cause considerable errors in pressure profiles.

Keywords: Adsorption, Darcy’s law, diffusion, mass transport, multiscale model, reactive dye
Cotton dyeing is a very complex process with many variables in which different phenomena occur simultaneously. This study aimed to describe the cotton dyeing process by natural dye, using a mathematical model that consists of three mass conservation equations that depict dyeing cotton in cones, taking a representative volume element at the micro, meso, and macroscales. The first equation describes the concentration changes of the dye in the solution, taking into account the diffusive, convective, adsorptive, and reactive effects. The second equation describes the changes in dye concentration in cotton fiber, considering the diffusive, adsorptive, and reactive effects within an intermediate scale. The last equation describes changes in the concentration of dye in the solution on the macroscale, based on the characteristics of the equipment and the difference in concentration before and after passing through the fiber. In addition, a fluid continuity equation was incorporated, taking int... [more]

Keywords: Altair® AcuSolve™, Computational Fluid Dynamics, multi-phase flow, slug flow
Selection of inlet perturbations, multiphase equations, and the turbulence equation may affect the development of slug flow using computational fluid dynamic simulation tools. The inlet perturbation, such as sinusoidal and random perturbations, play an essential role in inducing slug formation. Multiphase equations such as volume of fluid and level set methods are used to track and capture the gas-liquid immiscible interface. Similarly, turbulence equations such as Spalart Allmaras (SA), Detached Eddy Simulations (DES), k-omega, and k-epsilon can be used to predict the evolution of turbulence within the flow. At present, no direct comparison is available in the literature on the selection of (i) types of inlet perturbations, (ii) the choice of multiphase equations, and (iii) the turbulence equation on the development of slug flow using the Altair computational package. This article aims to compare the effects of the selection of inlet perturbations, multiphase models and turbulence equ... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressibility, constitutive models, mining backfill, numerical modeling
The compressibility of mining backfill governs its resistance to the closure of surrounding rock mass, which should be well reflected in numerical modeling. In most numerical simulations of backfill, the Mohr−Coulomb elasto-plastic model is used, but is constantly criticized for its poor representativeness to the mechanical response of geomaterials. Finding an appropriate constitutive model to better represent the compressibility of mining backfill is critical and necessary. In this paper, Mohr−Coulomb elasto-plastic model, double-yield model, and Soft Soil model are briefly recalled. Their applicability to describing the backfill compressibility is then assessed by comparing numerical and experimental results of one-dimensional consolidation and consolidated drained triaxial compression tests made on lowly cemented backfills available in the literature. The comparisons show that the Soft Soil model can be used to properly describe the experimental results while the application of the... [more]

Keywords: air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cells, finite element method, Modelling
Power supply systems based on air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks are becoming more popular as power sources for mobile applications. We try to create a PEMFC model that allows for predicting the PEMFC operation in various climatic conditions. A total of two models were developed and used: the membrane electrode assemble (MEA) model and the PEMFC stack model. The developed MEA model allows to determine the influence of external factors (temperature) on the PEMFC power density. The data obtained using the developed model correlate with experimental data at low ambient temperatures (10−30 °C). The difference between the simulation and experimental data is less than 10%. However, the accuracy of the model during PEMFC operation at high (>30 °C) and negative ambient temperatures remains in doubt and requires improvement. The obtained data were integrated into the air-cooled PEMFC stack model. Data of the temperature fields distribution will help to manage the proce... [more]

Keywords: airfoil, Computational Fluid Dynamics, drag reduction, riblets
Riblets with an appropriate size can effectively restrain turbulent boundary layer thickness and reduce viscous drag, but the effects of riblets strongly depend on the appearance of the fabric that is to be applied and its operating conditions. In this study, in order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a low-pressure fan by using riblet technology, sawtooth riblets on NACA4412 airfoil are examined at the low Reynolds number of 1 × 105, and the airfoil is operated at angles of attack (AOAs) ranging from approximately 0° to 12°. The numerical simulation is carried out by employing the SST k−ω turbulence model through the Ansys Fluent, and the effects of the riblets’ length and height on aerodynamic performance and flow characteristics of the airfoil are investigated. The results indicate that the amount of drag reduction varies greatly with riblet length and height and the AOA of airfoil flow. By contrast, the riblets are detrimental to the airfoil in some cases. The most effectiv... [more]

Keywords: gob-side entry, mechanical model, numerical simulation, parameters determination, roof cutting
Roof cutting is an effective technique for controlling the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock in deep gob-side entry. The determination of the roof cutting parameters has become a popular research subject. Initially, two mechanical models are established for the non-roof-cutting and roof-cutting of gob-side entry in deep mining conditions. On this basis, the necessity and significance of roof cutting is revealed by analysing the stress and displacement of roadside prop. The Universal Distinct Element Code numerical simulation model is established to determine the key roof-cutting parameters (cutting angle and cutting height) according to the on-site situation of No. 2415 headentry of the Suncun coal mine, China. The numerical simulation results show that with the cutting angle and height increase, the vertical stress and horizontal displacement of the coal wall first increase and then decrease, as in the case of the vertical stress and displacement of roadside prop. Keywords: east Inner Mongolia power system, large-scale wind power integration, probabilistic load flow, vine-copula, voltage state assessment
With the increasing rate of wind power installed capacity, voltage state assessment with large-scale wind power integration is of great significance. In this paper, a vine-copula based voltage state assessment method with large-scale wind power integration is proposed. Firstly, the nonparametric kernel density estimation is used to fit the wind speed distribution, and vine-copula is used to construct the wind speed joint distribution model of multiple regions. In order to obtain voltage distribution characteristics, probabilistic load flow based on the semi-invariant method and wind speed independent transformation based on the Rosenblatt transformation are described. On this basis, a voltage state assessment index is established for the more comprehensive evaluation of voltage characteristics, and a voltage state assessment procedure is proposed. Taking actual wind speed as an example, the case study of the IEEE 24-node power system and the east Inner Mongolia power system for voltage... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal pump, internal energy dissipation, rotating stall, vortex flow
Dredge pumps are usually operated at part-load conditions, in which the low-solidity centrifugal impeller could experience large internal energy dissipation, related to flow separation and vortices. In this study, SST k-ω and SAS-SST turbulence models were used, in steady and unsteady simulations, for a low-head centrifugal pump with a three-bladed impeller. The main focus of the present work was to investigate the internal energy dissipation in rotating an impeller at part-load operating conditions, related to flow separation and stall. The unsteady nature of these operating conditions was investigated. Performance experiments and transient wall pressure measurements were conducted for validation. A methodology for internal energy dissipation analysis has been proposed; and the unsteady pressure fluctuations were analyzed in the rotating impeller. The internal power losses in the volute and the impeller were mostly found in the centrifugal pump. The rotating stall phenomenon occurred... [more]

Keywords: dynamic model, indoor carrier robot, minimum-energy consumption, parameter uncertainty and disturbances, robust motion control
This work develops an indoor carrier robot for people with disabilities, where the precise tracking of designated route is crucial. The parameter uncertainties and disturbances of the robot impose significant challenges for tracking. The present paper first investigates the dynamic of mechanical structure and modeling of actuator motors and constructs a new dynamic model by considering all main parameter uncertainties and disturbances. A novel robust feedback tracking controller considering both the optimization of path tracking and the minimization of the power consumption energy is proposed. It is proved that the tracking errors and e ˙ satisfy a H∞ performance indicator while the energy consumption is minimum. A simulation example was performed and the results show that this novel algorithm can effectively reduce the tracking error from 0.2 m to 0.006 m while guaranteeing the minimum energy consumption. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed method was validated by... [more]

Keywords: complex terrain, design of experiments (DoE), unmanned aircraft system (UAS), unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS), wind simulation
This investigation presents a modelling strategy for wind-energy studies in complex terrains using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A model, based on an unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach with a modified version of the standard k-ε model, is applied. A validation study based on the Leipzig experiment shows the ability of the model to simulate atmospheric boundary layer characteristics such as the Coriolis force and shallow boundary layer. By combining the results of the model and a design of experiments (DoE) method, we could determine the degree to which the slope, the leaf area index, and the forest height of an escarpment have an effect on the horizontal velocity, the flow inclination angle, and the turbulent kinetic energy at critical positions. The DoE study shows that the primary contributor at a turbine-relevant height is the slope of the escarpment. In the second step, the method is extended to the WINSENT test site. The model is compared with measurem... [more]

Keywords: DC–DC converters, ferromagnetic cores, Modelling, power losses
The paper presents the results of a computer simulation illustrating the influence of power losses in the core of an inductor based on the characteristics of buck and boost converters. In the computations, the authors’ model of power losses in the core is used. Correctness of this model is verified experimentally for three different magnetic materials. Computations are performed with the use of this model and the Excel software for inductors including cores made of ferrite, powdered iron, and nanocrystalline material in a wide range of load resistance, as well as input voltage of both the considered converters operating at different values of switching frequency. The obtained computation results show that power losses in the inductor core and watt-hour efficiency of converters strongly depend on the material used to make this core, in addition to the input voltage and parameters of the control signal and load resistance of the considered converters. The obtained results of watt-hour ef... [more]

Keywords: CFD simulations, small-size wind turbines, wind tunnel blockage, wind tunnel tests
Blockage corrections for the experimental results obtained for a small-scale wind turbine in a wind tunnel are required in order to estimate how the same turbine would perform in real conditions. The tunnel blockage is defined as the ratio of the wind turbine swept area to the wind tunnel cross-section area. Experimental measurements of the power coefficient were performed on a horizontal-axis wind turbine with two rotors of diameter equal to 2 m and different numbers of blades, namely three and five. Measurements were carried out for different tip speed ratios in the closed circuit open test section wind tunnel of the University of Perugia (Italy). The obtained experimental results were compared with the numerical ones carried out in free conditions by using a CFD approach based on the steady-RANS method with the SST k-ω turbulence model, adopting the multiple reference frame (MRF) strategy to reduce the computational effort. The comparison showed that the maximum value of blockage... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), Energy Storage, fast charging station, stochastic charging demand
Multi-stall fast charging stations are often thought to require megawatt-range grid connections. The power consumption profile of such stations results in high cost penalties due to monthly power peaks and expensive linkage fees. A local energy storage system (ESS) can be used to address peak power demands. However, no appropriate sizing method is available to match specific constraints, such as the contracted power available from the grid and the projected recharging demand. A stochastic distribution of charging events was used in this paper to model power demand profiles at the station, with a one minute resolution. Based on 100 simulated months, we propose an optimum number of charging points, and we developed an algorithm to return the required local ESS capacity as a function of the available grid connection. The role of ESSs in the range of 100 kWh to 1 MWh was studied for all stations with up to 2000 charging events per week. The relevance of ESS implementation was assessed alon... [more]

Keywords: demand response, dynamic road network, electric vehicle (EV), fuzzy algorithm, trip chains, user participation
Electric vehicles (EVs) can be regarded as a kind of demand response (DR) resource. Nevertheless, the EVs travel behavior is flexible and random, in addition, their willingness to participate in the DR event is uncertain, they are expected to be managed and utilized by the EV aggregator (EVA). In this perspective, this paper presents a composite methodology that take into account the dynamic road network (DRN) information and fuzzy user participation (FUP) for obtaining spatio-temporal projections of demand response potential from electric vehicles and the electric vehicle aggregator. A dynamic traffic network model taking over the traffic time-varying information is developed by graph theory. The trip chain based on housing travel survey is set up, where Dijkstra algorithm is employed to plan the optimal route of EVs, in order to find the travel distance and travel time of each trip of EVs. To demonstrate the uncertainties of the EVs travel pattern, simulation analysis is conducted us... [more]

Keywords: bubble dynamics, numerical simulation, two-phase flow, visualization experiment
The shape and rising behavior of the horizontally arranged twin bubbles in a steady liquid are experimentally studied employing high-speed photography and digital image processing, and numerically studied by the Volume-Of-Fluid (VOF) method, in combination with a momentum equation coupled with a surface tension model. The movement trajectory and the velocity variation in horizontal and vertical directions of the horizontally arranged twin bubbles rising side by side, as observed in experiments, are described. According to the results, when two bubbles rise side by side, their horizontal velocity changes by the simple harmonic law; there is a cyclical process of two bubbles repeatedly attracted to and bounced against each other, rather than at constant distance between each other, and the bubbles swing up and down periodically in the water. The mathematical model and its numerical implementation are presented in detail. The validation of the model is confirmed by comparing the numerical... [more]

Keywords: bubble departure, bubble growth, flow boiling, force balance
A mechanistic model for bubble dynamics in flow boiling that is based on a force balance approach for a growing bubble is introduced. It considers the evaporation of the microlayer underneath the bubble, thermal diffusion and condensation around the bubble cap as well as dynamic inclination and contact angles between the bubble and the heating wall. It requires no recalibration of parameters to predict the bubble growth. Validation against different experimental flow boiling data was carried out with no case-dependent recalibration and yielded good agreement. The simulations confirmed the dependency of bubble departure and lift-off diameters on different parameters such as heat flux, liquid properties, subcooling temperature, system pressure, inclination angle of channel, channel geometry and mass flow rate.

The Edinburgh Duck is one of the highly-efficient wave energy converters (WECs). Compared to the spine-connected Duck configuration, the solo Duck will be able to use the point absorber effect to enhance its power capture performance. In this paper, a 3D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model is developed to predict the hydrodynamic performance of the solo Duck WEC in regular waveswithin a wide range ofwave steepness until the Duck capsizes. A set of experiments was designed to validate the accuracy of the CFD model. Boundary element method (BEM) simulations are also performed for comparison. CFD results agree well with experimental results and the main difference comes from the friction in the mechanical transmission system. CFD results also agree well with BEM results and differences appear at large wave steepness as a result of two hydrodynamic nonlinear factors: the nonlinear waveform and the vortex generation process. The influence of both two nonlinear factors iscombined to be q... [more]

Keywords: impingement depth mathematical model, numerical simulation, oil jet lubrication, optimal nozzle layout, orthogonal face gear, tooth surface temperature
The oil jet lubrication performance of a high-speed and heavy-load gear drive is significantly influenced and determined by the oil jet nozzle layout, as there is extremely limited meshing clearance for the impinging oil stream and an inevitable blocking effect by the rotating gears. A novel mathematical model for calculating the impingement depth of lubrication oil jetting on an orthogonal face gear surface has been developed based on meshing face gear theory and the oil jet lubrication process, and this model contains comprehensive design parameters for the jet nozzle layout and face gear pair. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) numerical simulations for the oil jet lubrication of an orthogonal face gear pair under different nozzle layout parameters show that a greater mathematically calculated jet impingement depth results in a greater oil volume fraction and oil pressure distribution. The influences of the jet nozzle layout parameters on the lubrication performance have been analyze... [more]
