Computational Model to Evaluate the Effect of Passive Techniques in Tube-In-Tube Helical Heat Exchanger
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, temperature contour
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of twist in the internal tube in a tube-in-tube helical heat exchanger keeping constant one type of ridges. To meet this goal, a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model was carried out. The effects of the fluid flow rate on the heat transfer were studied in the internal and annular flow. A commercial CFD package was used to predict the flow and thermal development in a tube-in-tube helical heat exchanger. The simulations were carried out in counter-flow mode operation with hot fluid in the internal tube side and cold fluids in the annular flow. The internal tube was modified with a double passive technique to provide high turbulence in the outer region. The numerical results agree with the reported data, the use of only one passive technique in the internal tube increases the heat transfer up to 28.8% compared to smooth tube.

Multi-Domain Modelling of LEDs for Supporting Virtual Prototyping of Luminaires
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: LED luminaire design, light emitting diodes, multi-domain modelling, power LEDs
This paper presents our approaches to chip level multi-domain LED (light emitting diode) modelling, targeting luminaire design in the Industry 4.0 era, to support virtual prototyping of LED luminaires through luminaire level multi-domain simulations. The primary goal of such virtual prototypes is to predict the light output characteristics of LED luminaires under different operating conditions. The key component in such digital twins of a luminaire is an appropriate multi-domain model for packaged LED devices that captures the electrical, thermal, and light output characteristics and their mutual dependence simultaneously and consistently. We developed two such models with this goal in mind that are presented in detail in this paper. The first model is a semi analytical, quasi black-box model that can be implemented on the basis of the built-in diode models of spice-like circuit simulators and a few added controlled sources. Our second presented model is derived from the physics of the... [more]

Dynamic Modeling of Wind Turbines Based on Estimated Wind Speed under Turbulent Conditions
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Doubly-fed Induction Generator (DFIG), tower shadow, wind shear, wind speed estimation
Large-scale wind turbines with a large blade radius rotates under fluctuating conditions depending on the blade position. The wind speed is maximum in the highest point when the blade in the upward position and minimum in the lowest point when the blade in the downward position. The spatial distribution of wind speed, which is known as the wind shear, leads to periodic fluctuations in the turbine rotor, which causes fluctuations in the generator output voltage and power. In addition, the turbine torque is affected by other factors such as tower shadow and turbine inertia. The space between the blade and tower, the tower diameter, and the blade diameter are very critical design factors that should be considered to reduce the output power fluctuations of a wind turbine generator. To model realistic characteristics while considering the critical factors of a wind turbine system, a wind turbine model is implemented using a squirrel-cage induction motor. Since the wind speed is the most imp... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: atmospheric modeling, GHG emissions, technical power potential, wind power plant, wind resource assessment
This paper presents the wind resource assessment of the southernmost region of Thailand using atmospheric and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) wind flow modeling. The predicted wind data by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) atmospheric modeling, assimilated to a virtual met mast, along with high-resolution topographic and roughness digital data, are then used as the main input for the CFD microscale wind flow modeling and high resolution wind resource mapping at elevations of 80 m, 100 m, 120 m, and 140 m agl. Numerical results are validated using measured wind data. Results show that the potential area where the wind speeds at 120 m agl are above 8.0 m/s is 86 km2, corresponding to a technical power potential in the order of 300 MW. The installation of wind power plants in the areas with the best wind resource could generate 690 GWh/year of electricity, thus avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of 1.2 million tonnes CO2eq/year to the atmosphere. A Generic Data Model for Describing Flexibility in Power Markets
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: demand response, demand side management, digitalization, flexibility modeling, generic flexibility data model, industrial processes, power system
In this article, we present a new descriptive model for industrial flexibility with respect to power consumption. The advancing digitization in the energy sector opens up new possibilities for utilizing and automatizing the marketing of flexibility potentials and therefore facilitates a more advanced energy management. This requires a standardized description and modeling of power-related flexibility. The data model in this work has been developed in close collaboration with several partners from different industries in the context of a major German research project. A suitable set of key figures allows for also describing complex production processes that exhibit interdependencies and storage-like properties. The data model can be applied to other areas as well, e.g., power plants, plug-in electric vehicles, or power-related flexibility of households.

Analytical Modeling and Comparison of Two Consequent-Pole Magnetic-Geared Machines for Hybrid Electric Vehicles
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical modeling, electromagnetic performance, harmonic modeling method, hybrid electric vehicle, magnetic field, magnetic-geared machine
The exact mathematical modeling of electric machines has always been an effective tool for scholars to understand the working principles and structure requirements of novel machine topologies. This paper provides an analytical modeling method—the harmonic modeling method (HMM)—for two types of consequent-pole magnetic-geared machines, namely the single consequent-pole magnetic-geared machine (SCP-MGM) and the dual consequent-pole magnetic-geared machine (DCP-MGM). By dividing the whole machine domain into different ring-like subdomains and solving the Maxwell equations, the magnetic field distribution and electromagnetic parameters of the two machines can be obtained, respectively. The two machines were applied in the propulsion systems of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The electromagnetic performances of two machines under different operating conditions were also compared. It turns out that the DCP-MGM can reach a larger electromagnetic torque compared to that of the SCP-MGM under t... [more]

On the Rising Interdependency between the Power Grid, ICT Network, and E-Mobility: Modeling and Analysis
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical infrastructures, e-mobility, ICT network, power grid, urban regions
Boosting critical infrastructures’ (CIs) preparedness to threats, including natural disasters and manmade attacks, is a global imperative. The intrinsic dependencies and interdependencies between CIs hinder their resiliency. Moreover, the evolution of CIs is, in many cases, en routè to tighten those interdependencies. The goal of this paper is to uncover and analyze the rising interdependency between the electric power grid, information and communication technology (ICT) networks, and transportation systems that are heavily reliant on electric-power drivetrains, collectively referred to hereafter as electro-mobility (e-mobility). E-mobility includes electric vehicles (EVs) and electric railway systems. A new influence graph-based model is introduced, as a promising approach to model operational interdependencies between CIs. Each of the links of the influence graph represents the probability of failure of the sink node following a failure of the source node. A futuristic scenario has b... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), daylighting, energetic simulation, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), organic photovoltaics (OPV), thermal performance
The combination of architectural membranes such as ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) foils and organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells offers a wide range of possibilities for building integration applications. This is due to their flexibility, free-shape, variable color and semitransparency, light weight, cost-effectivity, and low environmental impact. In addition, electrical generation is provided. Four configurations of ETFE foils designed to be integrated onto a south façade glazing element were studied for two representative European locations with different climatic conditions: Barcelona and Paris. These configurations comprise a reference one based on a double ETFE foil with a 10 mm air gap in between, and the other three incorporate on the inner ETFE foil either OPV cells covering 50% or 100% of its surface or a shading pattern printed on it covering 50% of its surface. Results show that, in terms of energy, the configuration with higher OPV coverage area is the one achieving the lo... [more]

Efficient Assessment of Reservoir Uncertainty Using Distance-Based Clustering: A Review
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering, dimension reduction, distance, distance-based clustering, reservoir uncertainty assessment
This paper presents a review of 71 research papers related to a distance-based clustering (DBC) technique for efficiently assessing reservoir uncertainty. The key to DBC is to select a few models that can represent hundreds of possible reservoir models. DBC is defined as a combination of four technical processes: distance definition, distance matrix construction, dimensional reduction, and clustering. In this paper, we review the algorithms employed in each step. For distance calculation, Minkowski distance is recommended with even order due to sign problem. In the case of clustering, K-means algorithm has been commonly used. DBC has been applied to various reservoir types from channel to unconventional reservoirs. DBC is effective for unconventional resources and enhanced oil recovery projects that have a significant advantage of reducing the number of reservoir simulations. Recently, DBC studies have been performed with deep learning algorithms for feature extraction to define a dist... [more]

The Crucial Role of Quaternary Mixtures of Active Layer in Organic Indoor Solar Cells
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite-difference time-domain, layer thickness optimization, optical modeling, organic, quaternary
A bulk heterojunction (BHJ) consisting of more than one donor/acceptor is one plausible way to improve the charge transport and/or the spectral absorption range in organic solar cells. Ternary and quaternary solar cells have shown promise in this regard. However, quaternary structures have not yet been intensively tested under indoor lighting conditions. A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based simulation was used to solve for the electric field intensity distribution inside a quaternary photovoltaic device illuminated by 500 lx indoor white light emitting diodes (LEDs). We found that quaternary indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) showed peculiarly high oscillations in the simulated ideal short-circuit current density (Jsc,ideal). Here, we simulated the electric field intensity inside the photovoltaic, compared it to single BHJ photovoltaics, and deduced that the electric field intensity inside the active layer of the IPV was highly sensitive to its thickness due to interference between th... Intraday Load Forecasts with Uncertainty
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Gaussian processes, load forecast, probabilistic, short term
We provide a comprehensive framework for forecasting five minute load using Gaussian processes with a positive definite kernel specifically designed for load forecasts. Gaussian processes are probabilistic, enabling us to draw samples from a posterior distribution and provide rigorous uncertainty estimates to complement the point forecast, an important benefit for forecast consumers. As part of the modeling process, we discuss various methods for dimension reduction and explore their use in effectively incorporating weather data to the load forecast. We provide guidance for every step of the modeling process, from model construction through optimization and model combination. We provide results on data from the largest deregulated wholesale U.S. electricity market for various periods in 2018. The process is transparent, mathematically motivated, and reproducible. The resulting model provides a probability density of five minute forecasts for 24 h.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 18-pulse converters, autotransformers rectifier unit (ATRU), inter phase transformers (IPT), power quality, zero sequence blocking transformers
With the evolution of the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) concept, high pulse converters have gained the attention of researchers due to their higher power quality. Among the high pulse converters, 18-pulse autotransformer rectifier unit (ATRU) offers better power quality level with small size, weight and medium complexity. The conventional topologies of autotransformers that require the use of extra elements such as Inter Phase Transformers (IPT) or Zero Sequence Blocking Transformers (ZSBT), adding to the complexity, weight and size of the overall system, are not considered in the analysis. For 18-pulse rectification, only those topologies of autotransformers which have the intrinsic current harmonic cancellation capabilities are presented here for comparison. These topologies offer current harmonic levels within limits specified by IEEE 519 with reduced weight and size as compared to the conventional multi-pulse converters. A Predictive Model for Dry-Growth Icing on Composite Insulators under Natural Conditions
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dry-growth icing, insulator, Modelling, natural conditions
Icing can adversely influence electric power system security. Two main issues are caused by icing: the overload of transmission lines, and the reduction in the insulation ability of the insulators. Most previous research has focused on the flashover characteristics of ice-covered insulators, but research on the icing process of the insulator is seriously lacking. Considering the effect of icing shape, the outer airflow field of an insulator was calculated and the local collision efficiencies of water droplets (β₁) were investigated according to the Lagrange algorithm. The simulation showed that the values of β₁ on the insulator edge and rod are much higher than on the insulator surface, and both were significantly influenced by the wind speed and median volume diameter (MVD) of the water droplets. Based on thermal balance equations, a dynamic dry-growth icing model was established. Using the natural icing conditions of Xuefeng Mountain (China) as an example, validation experiments were... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AC grids, active impedance, analytical modeling, design approach, harmonic mitigation, power system stability
This paper presents an analytical model, oriented to study harmonic mitigation aspects in AC grids. As it is well known, the presence of non-desired harmonics in AC grids can be palliated in several manners. However, in this paper, a power electronic-based active impedance at selective frequencies (ACISEF) is used, due to its already proven flexibility and adaptability to the changing characteristics of AC grids. Hence, the proposed analytical model approach is specially conceived to globally consider both the model of the AC grid itself with its electric equivalent impedances, together with the power electronic-based ACISEF, including its control loops. In addition, the proposed analytical model presents practical and useful properties, as it is simple to understand and simple to use, it has low computational cost and simple adaptability to different scenarios of AC grids, and it provides an accurate enough representation of the reality. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dry band, flashover voltage, mathematical modelling, pollution severity, silicone rubber
Dry band formation on the surface of outdoor insulators is one of the main reasons leading to flashover and power outages. In this paper, a dynamic arc model is proposed for single and multiple dry bands configuration to predict the critical flashover voltage for silicone rubber outdoor insulators. An arc is modelled as a time dependent impedance consisting of a Resistor Inductor Capacitor (RLC) circuit. The effect of dry band location and existence of multiple dry bands on critical flashover voltage is investigated. To validate the proposed model, experiments were conducted in a climate chamber under controlled environmental conditions on rectangular silicone rubber sheets polluted using improved solid layer method based on IEC 60,507. Tests were conducted at different dry band configurations and pollution severity levels. A good correlation was found between experimental results and simulation results. February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anisotropic shale, bit trajectory, dynamic damage, full-scale bit, percussive-rotary drilling
The lower rate of penetration (ROP) is one of the key technical difficulties during drilling of shale reservoirs. Percussive-rotary drilling (PRD) is crucial for increasing ROP. One of the core problems of ROP optimization for PRD are the dynamic damage characteristics of rock fragmentation. By considering the dynamic drilling parameters, a new model for estimating the PRD with a full-scale polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit is established. The mechanical parameters of shale are measured by a wave velocity method. Rock damage characteristics are simulated by using the finite element method. The numerical simulation model is verified by the actual drilling case in LMX shale reservoir in Sichuan (China). The results indicate that rock element damage occurs along the direction of maximum principal stress. The order of decreasing rock damage rate is impact-static load, static load and impact load. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adverse pressure gradient, gas distribution, gas void fraction (GVF), gas-liquid two-phase flow, interphase force
The performance of multiphase pumps has a remarkable influence on the related industrial application. In order to understand the flow field and gas-liquid phase interaction characteristics of a multiphase rotodynamic pump, detailed numerical analysis of the pump with a medium of air-water combination was carried out for the whole flow passage by means of a structured mesh using ICEM_CFD and TurboGrid. The results for 21% inlet gas void fraction (IGVF = 21%) condition showed that the magnitude ratio of non-drag forces to drag in impeller and guide vane passages was generally less than 1, whereas it was always less than 0.2 for the magnitude ratio of turbulent dispersion force to drag. When the IGVF was increased, the variation range of interphase forces in the impeller was greater than that in the guide vane. In addition, the gas in the impeller mainly accumulated near the suction surface in the outlet region. Further, with increased IGVF, the degree of aggregation increased as well as... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: improved cuckoo search algorithm, metaheuristic, opposition-based learning, optimization problem, parameter estimation, photovoltaic modeling, quasi-opposition based learning
Parameter estimation of photovoltaic (PV) models from experimental current versus voltage (I-V) characteristic curves acts a pivotal part in the modeling a PV system and optimizing its performance. Although many methods have been proposed for solving this PV model parameter estimation problem, it is still challenging to determine highly accurate and reliable solutions. Theoretical and Computational Analysis on Double-End Submerged Hollow Fibre Membrane Modules
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, double-end suction, permeate flow rate, submerged hollow fibre
This paper studies the potential increase in permeate output flow rate that submerged hollow fibres can achieve when operating in double-end suction. The flow dynamics of submerged hollow fibre membranes with different combinations of fibre inner diameter, membrane thickness, and membrane permeability were numerically simulated. Fibre features (fibre inner diameter, membrane thickness, and membrane permeability) are then characterised for their effects on the increment in permeate flow rate due to change in configuration. Concurrently, an analytical model of a fibre in double-end suction is modelled. Analysis on the double-end fibre model has indicated that the fibre characteristic ratio, λ, has a direct influence on the relative increase in output flow rate when both ends are open. Parametric investigations on the three fibre features have shown that their effects on relative output increase agree with the co-relations indicated by λ. For fibres with λ less than 4, a proportional rela... [more]
