February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DEM, rotary tillage, Simulation, straw incorporation, tillage tools
In order to improve the performance of tillage tool for straw incorporation in silty clay loam, a combined tillage implement with plough and rotary tiller was designed. Its performance on straw incorporation and power consumption was investigated, and the combined tillage types (CTSR and CTDR) were compared with traditional tillage types including a sole plough type (SP and DP), a sole rotary tiller (RT), and a two-pass tillage type (SP+RT and DP+RT) in a rice field experiment. The effect of the forward speed and rotary speed for RT and CTSR were studied by DEM simulation. The ratio of straw coverage by CTSR and CTDR increased nearly 20% compared with RT, and the stability coefficient of tillage depth and CV of the surface evenness after tillage also improved in the field experiment. The total power of CTSR and CTDR was less than that of RT and two-pass tillage types by measurement. DEM simulation indicated that the total power of CTSR increased with the increase of the forward speed a... [more]

Keywords: advanced biofuel, Aspen Plus, HTL, hydrothermal liquefaction, process model, reaction network
One of the more promising technologies for future renewable fuel production from biomass is hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Although enormous progress in the context of continuous experiments on demonstration plants has been made in the last years, still many research questions concerning the understanding of the HTL reaction network remain unanswered. In this study, a unique process model of an HTL process chain has been developed in Aspen Plus® for three feedstock, microalgae, sewage sludge and wheat straw. A process chain consisting of HTL, hydrotreatment (HT) and catalytic hydrothermal gasification (cHTG) build the core process steps of the model, which uses 51 model compounds representing the hydrolysis products of the different biochemical groups lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, lignin, extractives and ash for modeling the biomass. Two extensive reaction networks of 272 and 290 reactions for the HTL and HT process step, respectively, lead to the intermediate biocrude (~200 model... [more]

Keywords: corn threshing, discrete element method, optimal design, simulation analysis, spike-tooth threshing component
This paper takes a local drum-type corn thresher as an example. In order to make the threshing principle transform to the plate-tooth type, the width of the spike-tooth threshing component is increased gradually, and three threshing components of different shape and size are selected as the research objects. Based on the preliminary experimental research, the corn threshing process is simulation analyzed using the self-developed corn threshing process analysis software. The effects of the width of the threshing component on the corn ears threshing rate and kernel damage rate under different rates of drum rotation were studied from a macroscopic perspective. The results show that with the increase of drum rotation rate, both the corn ear threshing rate and kernel damage rate increase; with the increase of threshing component width, the threshing rate increases and the damage rate decreases; and when the component width is too large, the stacking between adjacent components has an impact... Keywords: bubble column, cascade photobioreactor, Computational Fluid Dynamics, flashing light effects, flat panel, photobioreactors, spectral analysis, wavy-bottomed photobioreactor
Microalgae biomass production rate in short light-path photobioreactors potentially can be improved by mixing-induced flashing light regimes. A cascade photobioreactor features a thin liquid layer flowing down a sloping, wavy-bottomed surface where liquid flow exhibits peculiar local recirculation hydrodynamics, potentially conducive to an ordered flashing light regime. This article presents a model-based analysis of the frequency distribution of perceived irradiance in said wavy-bottomed photobioreactor. The model combines a Lagrangian description of the motion of individual cells, in turn derived from the hydrodynamic parameters of the photobioreactor extracted from an experimentally validated Computational Fluid Dynamic model, with a simplified description of the irradiance field across the culture thickness, down to the spectral analysis of perceived irradiance. The main finding of the work is that the wavy bottomed photobioreactor provides a ‘robust’ spectral excitation to the cir... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: empirical mode, IC tray, Machine Learning, rolling forecast, time-series data
Suppliers are adjusting from the order-to-order manufacturing production mode toward demand forecasting. In the meantime, customers have increased demand uncertainty due to their own considerations, such as end-product demand frustration, which leads to suppliers’ inaccurate demand forecasting and inventory wastes. Our research applies ARIMA and LSTM techniques to establish rolling forecast models, which greatly improve accuracy and efficiency of demand and inventory forecasting. The forecast models, developed through historical data, are evaluated and verified by the root mean squares and average absolute error percentages in the actual case application, i.e., the orders of IC trays for semiconductor production plants. The proposed ARIMA and LSTM are superior to the manufacturer’s empirical model prediction results, with LSTM exhibiting enhanced performance in terms of short-term forecasting. The inventory continued to decline significantly after two months of model implementation and... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: baffle, bubble distribution, fluidized bed, numerical simulation
In this study, the multi-phase Eulerian−Eulerian two-fluid method (TFM) coupled with the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) was used to investigate the hydrodynamics of particle flows (Geldart Group B) in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed. The goal was to improve the bubble flow behavior inside the fluidized bed to improve the distribution of an injected liquid, by increasing the flow of bubbles entering the spray jet cavity and, thus, reduce the formation of wet agglomerates. The effects of a baffle on both the injection level and the whole fluidized bed were studied. Different baffle geometries were also investigated. Adding a fluxtube to a baffle can improve the bubble flows and a long fluxtube works best at redirecting gas bubbles. Baffles tend to smooth out variations in the gas distribution caused by the non-uniform inlet gas distribution. A gas pocket appears under all the baffles.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade profile, classification performance, high-efficiency rotor classifier, inner flow field, number of blades, rotor cage shape
Due to the uneven materials dispersion and high dust concentration in industrial applications of turbo air classifiers, a high-efficiency rotor classifier was designed. Numerical simulations by ANSYS-Fluent 19.0, the effects of rotor cage shape, the number of blades, and the blade profile on the inner flow field, as well as classification performance, were investigated. The simulation results indicated a significant improvement in flow field distribution near the classification surface with the conical rotor cage. Furthermore, there was an average reduction of 10.1% in cut size, as well as a 23.6% increase in classification accuracy. When the number of blades was 36, the flow field distribution between the blades was relatively uniform and a smaller cut size was obtained at a higher classification accuracy. A streamline blade with 52° as the inlet installation angle effectively reduced the impact of the airflow on the blade and eliminated the inertia anti-vortex between blades. The cut... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, COMSOL multiphysics, CSP, dish-stirling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solid works, stirling engine
The sustainable transition towards renewable energy sources has become increasingly important nowadays. In this work, a microgeneration energy system was investigated. The system is composed of a solar concentrator system coupled with an alpha-type Stirling engine. The aim was to maximize the production of electrical energy. By imposing a mean value of the direct irradiance on the system, the model developed can obtain the temperature of the fluid contained inside the Stirling engine. The heat exchanger of the microgenerator system was analyzed, focusing on the solar coupling with the engine, with a multiphysical approach (COMSOL v5.3). A real Stirling cycle was implemented using two methods for comparison: the first-order empirical Beale equation and the Schmidt isothermal method. Results demonstrated that a concentrator of 2.4 m in diameter can generate, starting from 800 W/m2 of mean irradiance, a value of electrical energy equal to 0.99 kWe.

This study highlights an innovative piece of hybrid technology, whereby the combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes into a single reactor, namely, the integrated anaerobic−aerobic bioreactor (IAAB) can surpass the limits of conventional methods treating palm oil mill effluent (POME). Optimisation of IAAB using SuperPro Designer V9 simulator for maximum biogas yield while addressing its economic and environmental trade-offs was conducted for the first time. Parameters such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) were optimised in the anaerobic compartment from 10 days and 6.2 g COD/L day to 9 days and 6.9 g COD/L day, respectively. Furthermore, sludge recycle ratio was optimised from 20% to 50% in the aerobic compartment. The optimisation was successful where the biogas yield increased from 0.24 to 0.29 L CH4/g CODremoved with excellent Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal efficiencies up to 99% with 5.8% lower net expe... Keywords: numerical simulation, solar assisted heat pump drying, system configuration optimization
In this paper, a new solar-assisted heat pump drying system with waste heat recovery and double water tanks (SCAHP) was established and the system optimized by TRNSYS and variable air volume experiment. The annual cumulative efficiency of the SCAHP (COPac), buffer tank heating efficiency (ηBT) and hot water storage tank heating efficiency (ηST) are all considered as optimization objectives, and this paper discusses the relationship between the three optimization objectives and studies the influence of hot air volume (qDR), area of solar collector (ASC), inclination angle of solar collector (ISC) and volume of heat storage water tank (VST) on system efficiency in the drying process. In order to explore the general rule of system optimization, numerical analysis and optimization were carried out in five typical cities in five climatic regions of China. The results show that the mixed variable air volume mode can increase the drying rate with less energy loss, and shorten the drying perio... [more]

Keywords: Energy, evaporation heat, Modelling, paper drying process
At present, the theoretical estimation of paper web’s evaporation heat is based on sorption isothermals. The measuring conditions are harsh, and the test speed is slow. This paper attempts to explore a theoretical method which can quickly determine the evaporation heat of paper web. During the new method, based on the measurement of the paper drying curve, the theoretical estimation model of paper evaporation heat was obtained by deducing the mechanism of heat and mass transfer. Compared with the traditional method based on sorption isothermals, the new model based on the drying curve has some advantages in measurement speed and easy access to basic data. Finally, the paper verifies the reliability of the model from two application scenarios of the laboratory and production line.

Keywords: capacity model, hot standby, hotbox, Optimization, partial load operation, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), system heat-up, thermal management
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology is of high interest for stationary decentralized generation of electricity and heat in combined heat and power systems (CHP) for the residential sector. Application scenarios for SOFC systems in an electricity-regulated mode play an important role, especially in places where an electrical grid connection is not available or rather unstable. The advantages of SOFC systems are the high fuel flexibility and the high efficiencies also under partial load operation compared to other decentralized power generation technologies. Due to the long, energy-consuming system heat-up and the limited partial load capability, SOFC systems do not reach the performance of conventional power generation technologies. Furthermore, stack thermal cycling is associated with power degradation and should be minimized. In this paper, the improvement of these drawbacks are investigated for hotbox-based SOFC systems in the 1 kWel-class for residential applications. Since expe... [more]

The fast exploration of a design space and identification of the best process conditions facilitating the highest space-time yield are of great interest for manufacturers. To obtain this information, depending on the design space, a large number of practical experiments must be performed, analyzed, and evaluated. To reduce this experimental effort and increase the process understanding, we evaluated a model-based design of experiments to rapidly identify the optimum process conditions in a design space maximizing space-time yield. From a small initial dataset, hybrid models were implemented and used as digital bioprocess twins, thus obtaining the recommended optimal experiment. In cases where these optimum conditions were not covered by existing data, the experiment was carried out and added to the initial data set, re-training the hybrid model. The procedure was repeated until the model gained certainty about the best process conditions, i.e., no new recommendations. To evaluate this... [more]

Early damage detection and classification by condition monitoring systems is crucial to enable predictive maintenance of manufacturing systems and industrial facilities. Data analysis can be improved by applying machine learning algorithms and fusion of data from heterogenous sensors. This paper presents an approach for a step-wise integration of classifications gained from vibration and acoustic emission sensors in order to combine the information from signals acquired in the low and high frequency ranges. A test rig comprising a drive train and bearings with small artificial damages is used for acquisition of experimental data. The results indicate that an improvement of damage classification can be obtained using the proposed algorithm of combining classifiers for vibrations and acoustic emissions.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: classification trees, decision rules, interactive learning, Machine Learning
This paper presents two new R packages ImbTreeEntropy and ImbTreeAUC for building decision trees, including their interactive construction and analysis, which is a highly regarded feature for field experts who want to be involved in the learning process. ImbTreeEntropy functionality includes the application of generalized entropy functions, such as Renyi, Tsallis, Sharma-Mittal, Sharma-Taneja and Kapur, to measure the impurity of a node. ImbTreeAUC provides non-standard measures to choose an optimal split point for an attribute (as well the optimal attribute for splitting) by employing local, semi-global and global AUC measures. The contribution of both packages is that thanks to interactive learning, the user is able to construct a new tree from scratch or, if required, the learning phase enables making a decision regarding the optimal split in ambiguous situations, taking into account each attribute and its cut-off. The main difference with existing solutions is that our packages pro... [more]

Biomass gasification for energy purposes has several advantages, such as the mitigation of global warming and national energy independency. In the present work, the data from an innovative and intensified steam/oxygen biomass gasification process, integrating a gas filtration step directly inside the reactor, are presented. The produced gas at the outlet of the 1 MWth gasification pilot plant was analysed in terms of its main gaseous products (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane) and contaminants. Experimental test sets were carried out at 0.25−0.28 Equivalence Ratio (ER), 0.4−0.5 Steam/Biomass (S/B), and 780−850 °C gasification temperature. Almond shells were selected as biomass feedstock and supplied to the reactor at approximately 120 and 150 kgdry/h. Based on the collected data, the in-vessel filtration system showed a dust removal efficiency higher than 99%-wt. Keywords: alternative reforms, comparative, fixed bed, kinetic, methane, performance
A comparative evaluation of alternative methane reforming processes as an option to steam reforming was performed by carrying out simulations of operations in a fixed bed reactor with a Ni (4.8 wt.%/γ-Al2O3) catalyst at 1023 K under 1.0 bar. Methane reforms, including processing with carbon dioxide (DRM, CH4/CO2), autothermal reform (ATRM, CH4/H2O/O2), and combined reform (CRM, CH4/CO2/H2O/O2) had their operations predicted based on experimental data developed to represent their kinetic behavior, formalized with mechanisms and parametric quantifications. The performance of fixed bed reactor operations for methane conversions occurred with different reaction rates in the three alternative processes, and comparatively the orders of magnitude were 102, 10−1, and 10−4 in CRM, ATRM, and DRM, respectively. According to each process, the methane conversions were oriented towards the predominant productions of hydrogen or carbon monoxide, indicating the kinetic selectivities of H2, 86.1% and C... [more]

Keywords: cooling power, exchanger, mathematical model, numerical model, passive cooling beam, Simulation
This article is focused on the research of passive cooling beams and increasing their cooling capacity. A passive cooling beam with four tubes was chosen as a model. A mathematical model was built using the corresponding criterion equations to capture the behavior of a passive cooling beam. This mathematical model can be used to optimize geometrical parameters (the distance between the ribs, rib height and thickness, and diameter and number of tubes), by changing these geometric parameters we can increase the cooling performance. The work includes a mathematical model for calculating the boundary layer, which has a significant influence on the cooling performance. The results obtained from the created mathematical model show that the model works correctly and can be used to optimize the cooling performance of passive cooling beams. To better understand the behavior of a passive cooling beam in a confined space, the entire device was numerically simulated, as was the flow in the interco... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, non-linear motion, restoring moment, Salter’s duck-type rotor
This study conducted a numerical investigation on the non-linear motion problems between a Salter duck-type rotor and large waves using CFD simulations. Regular waves of five different wave heights were generated. First, the linear motion of the rotor from the CFD simulation was verified by comparing it with the existing experimental and frequency domain analysis results. Then, a series of CFD simulations were performed to investigate the non-linear motions of the rotor. In the case of a lower wave height, the CFD simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental and frequency domain analysis results. However, as the wave height increased, the resonance periods were different in each other. In addition, the magnitudes of normalized pitch motions by the wave heights decreased as the wave heights increased. To investigate the aforementioned phenomena, the pitch motion equation was examined using separate CFD simulations. The results showed that changing the restoring moment... [more]

Keywords: candidate generation, deep learning, recommendation system, sequence-aware embedding
Recently proposed recommendation systems based on embedding vector technology allow us to utilize a wide range of information such as user side and item side information to predict user preferences. Since there is a lack of ability to use the sequential information of user history, most recommendation system algorithms fail to predict the user’s preferences more accurately. Therefore, in this study, we developed a novel recommendation system that takes advantage of sequence and heterogeneous information in the candidate-generation process. The principle underlying the proposed recommendation model is that the new sequence based embedding layer in the model catches the sequence pattern of user history. The proposed deep-learning model may improve the prediction accuracy using user data, item data, and sequential information of the user’s profile. Experiments were conducted on datasets of the Korean e-learning platform, and the empirical results confirmed the capability of the proposed a... [more]

Keywords: blast furnace, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel injection, Natural Gas, numerical simulation, RAFT
With the recent push towards high injection rate blast furnace operation for economic and environmental reasons, it has become desirable in North America to better understand the impacts of alternate injected gas fuels in comparison to the well-documented limitations of natural gas. The quenching effects of gas injection on the furnace present a functional limit on the maximum stable injection rate which can be utilized. With this in mind, researchers at Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation utilized previously developed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the blast furnace to explore the impacts of replacing natural gas with syngas in a blast furnace with a single auxiliary fuel supply. Simulations predicted that the syngas injection can indeed reduce coke consumption in the blast furnace at similar injection rates to natural gas while maintaining stable raceway flame and reducing gas temperatures. The coke rates predicted by... [more]

Mature landfill leachates are characterized by high levels of ammoniacal nitrogen which must be reduced for discharge in the sewer system and further treatment in municipal wastewater treatment plants. The use of anammox-based processes can allow for an efficient treatment of ammonium-rich leachates. In this work, two real scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), designed to initially perform partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A) and simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification (SPND) for the treatment of ammonium-rich urban landfill leachate, were modelled using BioWin 6.0 in order to enable plant-wide modelling and optimizing. The constructed models were calibrated and validated using data from long- and short-term (one cycle) SBR operation and fit well to the main physical-chemical parameters (i.e., ammonium, nitrite and nitrate concentrations) measured during short-term (one cycle) operations. Despite the different strategies in terms of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations a... [more]

Keywords: cavitation number, large eddy simulation, nozzle, peak velocity, self-excited oscillation pulse jet
Self-excited oscillation pulse jet technology is widely used to clean sediment from oil storage tanks. Its successful application is dependent on jet performance. As the cleaning requirements of the oil industry increase, it is necessary to optimise the structure of self-excited oscillation pulsed jet nozzles (SOPJNs) to optimise cleaning and energy efficiencies. In this study, the jet performance of a SOPJN is modelled and analysed based on computational fluid dynamics with consideration of a large eddy simulation and homogeneous cavitation. The modelling results are highly consistent with experimental results. The effects of the SOPJN’s inlet diameter, cavity diameter, cavity length, wall reflection angle, and inlet pressure on the jet’s peak velocity, oscillation frequency, and cavitation number were analysed. The results show that the oscillation frequency decreases with the increase of the inlet diameter d1, cavity diameter D, cavity length L and reflection angle of wall α. Optimi... [more]

Keywords: construction vehicles, fractional order, hydro-pneumatic suspension, mathematical model
The motion differential equation of hydro-pneumatic suspension is established to describe the vibration characteristics for a certain type of construction vehicle. The output force was deduced from the suspension parameters. Based on the suspension characteristics of a multi-phase medium, fractional calculus theory was introduced, and its fractional Bagley−Torvik equation was formed. The numerical computation by a low-pass filter of the Oustaloup algorithm was performed. The numerical solution of a nonlinear fractional equation was obtained to investigate the vibration characteristics of the suspension fractional system. Through the building of an equal-ratio test platform and simulation model, the fractional- integer-order model simulation and experimental data were compared. When the fractional order is 0.9, it better describes the motion characteristics of suspension system. The experiments show that the experimental data can fit the fractional-order system model well, and thereby p... [more]
