Physics-Informed Neural Network Solution of Point Kinetics Equations for a Nuclear Reactor Digital Twin
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, nuclear reactor, nuclear reactor monitoring, physics-informed neural networks, point kinetics equations, stiff ordinary differential equations
A digital twin (DT) for nuclear reactor monitoring can be implemented using either a differential equations-based physics model or a data-driven machine learning model. The challenge of a physics-model-based DT consists of achieving sufficient model fidelity to represent a complex experimental system, whereas the challenge of a data-driven DT consists of extensive training requirements and a potential lack of predictive ability. We investigate the performance of a hybrid approach, which is based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) that encode fundamental physical laws into the loss function of the neural network. We develop a PINN model to solve the point kinetic equations (PKEs), which are time-dependent, stiff, nonlinear, ordinary differential equations that constitute a nuclear reactor reduced-order model under the approximation of ignoring spatial dependence of the neutron flux. The PINN model solution of PKEs is developed to monitor the start-up transient of Purdue Univers... [more]

Overview of Transient Simulations of Grounding Systems under Surge Conditions
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: grounding systems, nonlinear grounding impedance, simulations, soil ionization
The present paper gives an overview of modelling methods of standard grounding systems under surge conditions, using the non-uniform transmission line approach. The model presented considers the soil ionization and the frequency dependence of the soil parameters during the current transients. Furthermore, the representation of the non-linear response of the soil is made using a shunt time-variable resistance to simulate the behavior of the grounding resistance when a surge current flows through the system. The model development and analysis are made using ATP-EMTP/ATPDraw transient software.

Modeling of Thermal-Lag Engine with Validation by Experimental Data
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD model, experimental comparison, thermal-lag engine
Thermal-lag engines are external combustion engines with a single moving piston. This feature leads to lower manufacturing and maintenance costs than traditional Stirling engines. Although the original concept of thermal-lag engines was invented roughly 35 years ago, the information on thermal-lag engines is still limited. Therefore, this study focuses on thermal-lag engine performance by developing a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The grid independence check and the time step independence check are firstly performed to select the number of elements and size of the time step for simulation. The CFD model is then validated by the experimental data, which were collected by measuring an existing prototype engine. It has been found that the CFD predictions are well fitted to the experimental data over the range of engine speed from 200 to 1600 rpm at temperatures of 1173 or 1273 K. Furthermore, the CFD model predicts that the maximum engine power is 21.1 W whil... [more]

Law and Mechanism Study on Salt Resistance of Nonionic Surfactant (Alkyl Glycoside) Foam
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alkyl glycoside, foam stability, molecular dynamic simulation
In this paper, the effects of three cations, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+, on the stability of APG foams were investigated experimentally. The results show that cations can slow down the process of liquid drainage and coarsening of APG foam, which is beneficial to the stability of the foam. The salt resistance mechanism of nonionic surfactant (APG) was investigated by molecular dynamics simulation and compared with that of anionic surfactant (SDS) foam. Firstly, the distribution characteristics of cations in APG foam and SDS foam were explored. It was found that the cations in the APG foam were mainly distributed in the water layer away from the head groups, and the cations in the SDS foam were more likely to appear near the head groups. Then, the hydration of the head groups and the cation was investigated. The results show that cations have little effect on the number of water molecules in the hydration layer of APG head groups but will reduce the diffusion capacity of water molecules and inc... [more]

Energy Simulations of a Building Insulated with a Hemp-Lime Composite with Different Wall and Node Variants
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building partition, energy demand, hemp-lime composite, structural node, thermal bridge
Thermal bridges constitute a significant share in the overall heat losses through building partitions. This is an important issue not only in traditional but also ecological buildings, where the load-bearing structure is often a wooden frame. In partitions insulated with hemp-lime composite, the skeleton is usually hidden in the insulation. However, in some nodes or jambs, wooden elements may be exposed or have a large cross-section, intensifying the heat transfer. This work presents simulations of energy demand in a single-family building insulated with hemp-lime composite, using the BSim dynamic simulation program. The calculations take into account the linear thermal transmittance of structural nodes modeled in the THERM program. The energy demand for heating and the share of thermal bridges in the heat loss of the entire building were calculated for different locations of the structural framework in the walls, as well as the size and number of windows. The share of thermal bridges... [more]

Cold Load Pickup Model Adequacy for Power System Restoration Studies
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging, cold load pickup, frequency stability, load modelling, power system restoration, renewable generation, storage, thermal loads
When a grid section is re-energized after an interruption, the load behaviour can be significantly different from normal operation. In this manuscript, the impact of the phenomenon—known as cold load pickup—is investigated by evaluating 31 time series measured after network outages in Austria and Germany. Its impact on power system restoration and the adequacy of the most common type of simplified model for such investigations is assessed by the time domain simulation of a restoration setting involving the parallel operation of conventional and renewable generation. Parameter distributions are provided for the exponential decay and the delayed exponential decay model with the aim of facilitating meaningful consideration of the phenomenon in time domain simulations of power system restoration. The benefits and limitations of these models are assessed by comparison of time domain simulation results using either the normalized raw data, an exponential decay model or a step-wise active pow... Comprehensive Computational Model for Coupled Fluid Flow, Mass Transfer, and Light Supply in Tubular Photobioreactors Equipped with Glass Sponges
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, lattice Boltzmann method, numerical simulation, photobioreactors, radiative transport
The design and optimization of photobioreactor(s) (PBR) benefit from the development of robust and quantitatively accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, which incorporate the complex interplay of fundamental phenomena. In the present work, we propose a comprehensive computational model for tubular photobioreactors equipped with glass sponges. The simulation model requires a minimum of at least three submodels for hydrodynamics, light supply, and biomass kinetics, respectively. First, by modeling the hydrodynamics, the light−dark cycles can be detected and the mixing characteristics of the flow (besides the mass transport) can be analyzed. Second, the radiative transport model is deployed to predict the local light intensities according to the wavelength of the light and scattering characteristics of the culture. The third submodel implements the biomass growth kinetic by coupling the local light intensities to hydrodynamic information of the CO2 concentration, which allows... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Tail Over-Fire Air Supply of a Grate Biomass Boiler
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air distribution, grate boiler, grate tail burnout air, incidence angle, particle distribution
By taking a 130 t/h water-cooled grate biomass boiler as the research object, the ANSYS software is applied to simulate the effects of the tail burnout air’s incidence angle, wind speed, and pipe diameter on flow field distribution in the furnace, the movement of unburned carbon particles at the tail of the grate under cold operation. The influence rules of the incidence angle, pipe diameter, and wind speed of the tail burnout air on the combustion in the furnace and the movement of the tail particles were obtained. The results show that the setting of burnout air at the tail of the grate can better organize the air flow field at the grate tail, change the particle distribution, prevent small density particles from directly falling into the ash hopper, and prolong the residence time of particles on the grate. Under the study conditions, with an increase in the outlet velocity and the pipe diameter of the tail burnout air, as the movement degree and the burnout degree of grate particles... [more]

Effect of Wettability Heterogeneity on Water-Gas Two-Phase Displacement Behavior in a Complex Pore Structure by Phase-Field Model
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: complex pore structure, numerical simulation, phase-field model, preferential paths, water-gas two-phase displacement, wettability heterogeneity
Understanding the immiscible displacement mechanism in porous media is vital to enhancing the hydrocarbon resources in the oil and gas reservoir. Improving resource recovery requires quantitatively characterizing the effect of wettability heterogeneity on the immiscible displacement behaviors at the pore scale, which can be used to predict the displacement distribution of multiphase fluids and evaluate the optimal wettability strategy in porous media. The heterogeneity of fluid wettability in a natural rock makes it extremely hard to directly observe the fluid displacement behaviors in the reservoir rocks and quantify the sensitivity of preferential displacement path and displacement efficiency to wettability distribution. In this study, the phase-field model coupling wettability heterogeneity was established. The gas-water two-phase displacement process was simulated under various wettability distributions and injecting flux rates in a complex pore structure. The effect of wettability... [more]

Measurement-Based Stiff Equation Methodology for Single Phase Transformer Inrush Current Computations
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: circuit model of a single-phase transformer, hysteresis, measurements, parameter estimation, Runge–Kutta implicit methods, stiff nonlinear ordinary differential equations, transient states
The present paper describes the research on the mechanism of inrush current formation in a modern single-phase transformer, in which the insulation system must withstand the stresses arising during these transient states. A complete and measurement-verified method for determining the transformer inrush current waveforms and other signals (e.g., fluxes and voltages) is developed. This method makes it possible to determine a steady state solution. However, on account of the electromagnetic phenomena, the solving process is long. To analyze the transient dynamic response of the tested transformer, a nonlinear model was assumed, from which the stiff differential equations were derived. The simulation analyses were performed using dedicated software written in C# with the original implementation of the five-stage Radau IIA algorithm selected from the known variants of the Runge−Kutta implicit methods. The calculations were based on the measurement waveforms recorded during transient (switch... [more]

Numerical Evaluation of Biochar Production Performance of Downdraft Gasifier by Thermodynamic Model
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biochar, Biomass, correlation equation, downdraft gasifier, thermodynamic model
A theoretical evaluation of the biochar production process using a biomass gasifier has been carried out herein. Being distinguished from the previous research trend examining the use of a biomass gasifier, which has been focused on energy efficiency, the present study tries to figure out the effect of biochar production rate on the overall process performance because biochar itself has now been given a spotlight as the main product. Biochar can be utilized for agricultural and industrial purposes, along with the benefit of climate change mitigation. A thermodynamic model based on chemical equilibrium analysis is utilized to demonstrate the effect of biochar production rate on the producer gas characteristics such as gas composition, LHV (lower heating value) and cold gas efficiency. Three gasifier models using chemical equilibrium model are reconstructed to simulate biochar-producing gasifiers, and seven kinds of biomass are considered as feed material. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DC power grids, distributed generation, electric vehicle modeling, hosting capacity, Monte Carlo simulation
Current power systems are undergoing an energy transition, where technological elements such as distributed generation and electric vehicles through AC or DC microgrids are important elements to face this transition. This paper presents a methodology for quantifying distributed resource-based generation and the number of electric vehicles that can be connected to isolated DC grids without impacting the safe operation of these networks. The methodology evaluates the maximum capacity of distributed generation considering the uncertainty present in the electric vehicle charging of fleets composed of five types of electric vehicles. Specifically, the uncertainty is associated with the following variables: the home arrival time, home departure time, traveled distance, and battery efficiency. The methodology was applied to a 21-bus DC microgrid and a 33-bus DC network under different test conditions. The results show that higher penetrations of EVs and distributed resource-based generation c... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow resistance, forced convection, heat transfer, nanofluids, round tubes, smooth, straight
A comprehensive review of published works dealing with numerical modelling of forced convection heat transfer and hydrodynamics of nanofluids is presented. Due to the extensive literature, the review is limited to straight, smooth, circular tubes, as this is the basic geometry in shell-and-tube exchangers. Works on numerical modelling of forced convection in tubes are presented chronologically in the first part of the article. Particular attention was paid to the method of the solution of governing equations, geometry of the heating section, and boundary conditions assumed. Influence of nanoparticles on heat transfer and flow resistance are discussed. Basic information is summarized in tabular form, separately for single-phase approach and two-phase models. The second part of the article contains the correlation equations proposed in the presented papers for the calculation of the Nusselt (Nu) number or heat transfer coefficient, separately for laminar and turbulent flow. Simulation Research on Thermal Deviation in 700 °C Ultra-Supercritical Boiler
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 700 °C ultra-supercritical boiler, orthogonal test method, range analysis method, thermal deviation, variance analysis method, weight matrix analysis method
Based on commercial CFD software, a 700 °C ultra-supercritical tangential boiler was simulated by the orthogonal test method, and the thermal deviation of flue gas at the furnace outlet section was used as the optimization index. Three horizontal optimization treatments are designed respectively for the air distribution mode of secondary air (factor A), the reverse tangent angle of the separate over-fire air (factor B), and the upper swing angle of the burner (factor C). The range analysis method, variance analysis method, and weight matrix analysis method are used to determine the factor and level combination of the best optimization effect and the weight of each factor. The research results show that the significance of the influence of each factor on the optimization index is: B > C > A (reverse tangent angle of the separate over-fire air > the upper swing angle of the burner > the secondary air distribution mode); the weight ratios of the three factors are: factor A is 0.080, facto... Waveform Quality Evaluation Method of Variable-Frequency Current Based on Curve Fitting
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: curve fitting, THD, variable-frequency current, waveform distortion evaluation
Since total harmonic distortion (THD) is mainly used as the evaluation index for the waveform quality of periodic signals, it cannot be applied to variable-frequency signals. However, there is scarce research on the evaluation methods and indicators of variable-frequency signals in the literature. In this paper, an evaluation method of the waveform distortion (WD) of variable-frequency signals based on curve fitting is proposed. First, the variable-frequency current expression of the coefficients to be optimized is obtained through theoretical derivation. Second, the coefficients are optimized by curve fitting in the time domain through the nonlinear least-squares method. Then, the waveform distortion of the variable-frequency current (IWDVF) is calculated. In order to validate the proposed evaluation method, the simulation model of a synchronous motor driven by a cascaded H-bridge five-level inverter is built. The simulation results show that, for the same constant-frequency current,... [more]

A Harmonic Suppression SVPWM Strategy for the Asymmetric Six-Phase Motor Fed by Two-Level Six-Phase VSI Operating in the Overmodulation Region
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: asymmetric six-phase motor, overmodulation, space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM), total harmonic distortion (THD), two-level six-phase voltage source inverter (VSI)
For the asymmetric six-phase motor fed by a two-level six-phase voltage source inverter (VSI), when the modulation index is less than 0.5774, the motor operates in the linear region, and the harmonics in the Z1 − Z2 subspace can be suppressed to zero. When the modulation index is beyond 0.5774 and less than 0.6221, the motor operates in overmodulation regions, and the harmonics in the Z1 − Z2 subspace cannot be suppressed to zero. To minimize the harmonics in the Z1 − Z2 subspace for these regions, a harmonic suppression strategy, namely, harmonic suppression overmodulation strategy (HSOS), is proposed in this paper. The lower-order harmonics of the Z1 − Z2 subspace, namely, the 5th, 7th, 17th and 19th, are considered. Compared with the traditional four-vector overmodulation strategy (TFOS), the content of the 5th harmonic is reduced by about 20%, and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of these four kinds of harmonics is reduced by about 21% in the proposed HSOS. Finally, the simulati... [more]

A Review of Laboratory and Numerical Techniques to Simulate Turbulent Flows
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: laboratory, numerical, simulations, trends, turbulence
Turbulence is still an unsolved issue with enormous implications in several fields, from the turbulent wakes on moving objects to the accumulation of heat in the built environment or the optimization of the performances of heat exchangers or mixers. This review deals with the techniques and trends in turbulent flow simulations, which can be achieved through both laboratory and numerical modeling. As a matter of fact, even if the term “experiment” is commonly employed for laboratory techniques and the term “simulation” for numerical techniques, both the laboratory and numerical techniques try to simulate the real-world turbulent flows performing experiments under controlled conditions. The main target of this paper is to provide an overview of laboratory and numerical techniques to investigate turbulent flows, useful for the research and technical community also involved in the energy field (often non-specialist of turbulent flow investigations), highlighting the advantages and disadvan... Safety issues arising from a hydrogen explosion accident in Korea are discussed herein. In order to increase the safety of hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs), the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) decided to install a damage-mitigation wall, also referred to as a barrier, around the storage tanks at the HRSs after evaluating the consequences of hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents based on the characteristics of each HRS. To propose a new regulation related to the barrier installation at the HRSs, which can ensure a proper separation distance between the HRS and its surrounding protected facilities in a complex city, KGS planned to test various barrier models under hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents to develop a standard model of the barrier. A numerical simulation to investigate the effect of the recommended barrier during hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents in the HRS will be performed before installing the barrier at the HRSs. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial compressor, Computational Fluid Dynamics, minimum environmental load
The increasing importance of renewable energy capacity in the power generation scenario, together with the fluctuating consumer energy demand, forces conventional fossil fuel power generation systems to promptly respond to relevant and rapid load variations and to operate under off-design conditions during a major fraction of their lives. In order to improve existing power plants’ flexibility in facing energy surplus or deficit, retrofittable solutions for gas turbine compressors are proposed. In this paper, two different operation strategies, variable inlet guide vanes (IGVs) and blow-off extraction (BO), are considered for enabling partial load and minimum environmental load operation, and thus to identify implementation opportunities in existing thermal power plants. A typical 15-stage F-class gas turbine compressor is chosen as a test case and some energy demand scenarios are selected to validate the adopted solutions. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electrified railway, low-frequency oscillation, mixed operation, traction inverter system
Addressing the shortcomings of existing low-frequency oscillation research on electrified railways, which has mainly focused on single-type trains and lacks the accurate modeling of traction inverter systems, in this paper we modeled and analyzed low-frequency oscillations in an electrified railway passenger and freight mixed-operation vehicle−grid system. Impact of Exposure to Supercritical Carbon Dioxide on Reservoir Caprocks and Inter-Layers during Sequestration
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carbon sequestration, pore characterisation, reservoir simulation
The long-term exposure of rocks to supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) during sequestration creates structural and chemical changes. In turn, these lead to changes in the permeability of inter-layers and caprocks that can alter plume migration behaviour and/or lead to the loss of the sealing efficiency of caprocks. This review first surveys experimental studies of changes to the pore structure and mass transport properties of caprocks and interlayers, including novel experimental protocols and data analysis methods. These methods provide more accurate measures of basic parameters, such as surface area, as well as new information on pore network features that are essential to properly understanding changes to mass transport properties. The subsequent evolution of rocks exposed to scCO2 involves a complex coupling of geomechanics, geochemistry, and mass transport processes over different length and time scales. Performance Evaluation and Field Application of Nano Plugging Agent for Shale Water-Based Drilling Fluid
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: long horizontal section horizontal well, nano plugging agent, water-based drilling fluid, well wall stabilization
In this paper, nano plugging agent AMPS/AM was prepared, and its plugging performance was evaluated by a microfracture simulation experiment and a shale pressure resistance experiment. The pressure loss decreased by 66.09% compared with the top pressure of 6.9 MPa, and the average core indentation hardness increased 58.12% with 3% AMPS/AM blocking mud. The experiments indicate that AMPS/AM can effectively seal the shale micropore and nanopore structure and greatly improve the stability of fractured shale well wall. The field application results of the YS129H well in the Zhaotong block show that the water-based drilling fluid with nano plugging agent AMPS/AM as the key agent has strong plugging performance. The well mud is of high temperature and pressure water loss < s4 mL, mud cake permeability reduction rate of 85.67%, which indicates that the drilling fluid system has good sealing properties and well wall stability.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: frequency domain, harmonic analysis, nonlinear devices, tensors
Over the past few decades, there have been rapid advances in solid-state technology as well as a reduction in cost. This, coupled with the functionality and efficiency improvements they afford, has resulted in a massive increase in the use of electronic devices. Where traditionally, there were a few well-known nonlinear loads that needed to be considered, now there are numerous low-power devices. Although individually insignificant, collectively, they are very significant. This paper presents a tensor-based harmonic analysis approach that is capable of capturing important interactions while being computationally efficient enough to model a large distribution system. Numerical experiments are used to highlight the advantages of the tensor framework. Numerous papers have investigated the tensor parametrisation or its mathematical equivalent—harmonically coupled admittance matrices (also known as frequency coupling matrices).
