Numerical Simulation of Kelvin−Helmholtz Instability and Boundary Layer Stripping for an Interpretation of Melt Jet Breakup Mechanisms
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: boundary layer stripping, fuel–coolant interaction, jet breakup, Kelvin–Helmholtz instability
The present study is aimed at investigating the ability of a CFD modeling of liquid−liquid jet breakup to resolve the principal mechanisms relevant to jet breakup as well as submillimeter-scale drop size. It is generally known that jet leading edge breaks up by boundary layer stripping (BLS), and jet lateral surface breaks up by Kelvin−Helmholtz instability (KHI). The jet breakup rate as well as the resulting particle size are important parameters that would largely govern the intensity of a steam explosion in severe reactor accidents. First, a two-dimensional simulation of KHI along the melt-liquid coolant interface was performed using the VOF model in ANSYS Fluent with fine meshes as small as 0.02 mm. The dominant wavelength obtained by FFT analysis of calculated melt volume fractions showed that the fastest growing wavelength from the linear analysis of KHI is seen only at the very early development of the instability, and it increases gradually. Second, a three-dimensional simulati... [more]

Numerical Analysis of a Horizontal Pressure Differential Wave Energy Converter
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, differential pressure, orifice geometry, pipe, wave tank
CFD modeling of an innovative wave energy device has been carried out in this study. OpenFoam wave modeling solver interFoam has been employed in order to investigate the energy extraction capability of the wave energy device. The innovative concept is based on utilizing the pressure differential under the crest and trough of a wave to drive flow through a pipe. The simulated surface elevation of a wave has been validated against the reported wave tank experimental data in order to provide confidence in the modeling outcome. Further, simulations have been carried out with the device placed near to the bottom of the numerical wave tank in order establish the energy extraction potential. The simulation results confirm that effective power can be generated from the wave energy device. The efficiency of the device decreases with the increase in wave height, although it increases with the wave period. Higher power-take off (PTO) damping is also beneficial in extracting increased energy from... [more]

Determinants of Electricity Prices in Turkey: An Application of Machine Learning and Time Series Models
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electricity prices, global factors, Machine Learning, national factors, prediction, time series econometrics, Turkey
The study compares the prediction performance of alternative machine learning algorithms and time series econometric models for daily Turkish electricity prices and defines the determinants of electricity prices by considering seven global, national, and electricity-related variables as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. Daily data that consist of the pre-pandemic (15 February 2019−10 March 2020) and the pandemic (11 March 2020−31 March 2021) periods are included. Moreover, various time series econometric models and machine learning algorithms are applied. The findings reveal that (i) machine learning algorithms present higher prediction performance than time series models for both periods, (ii) renewable sources are the most influential factor for the electricity prices, and (iii) the COVID-19 pandemic caused a change in the importance order of influential factors on the electricity prices. Thus, the empirical results highlight the consideration of machine learning algorithms in electrici... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 6T thyristor bridge, flywheel energy storage, hall sensor, mogen, PM BLDC motor, rectifier, Simulink
This paper presents research conducted on the development of an innovative system to increase the amount of energy recovered from a high-speed kinetic energy storage based on a three-phase permanent magnet brushless (PM BLDC) motor/generator (mogen) with a flywheel-shaped rotor, compared to the efficiency obtained for standard solutions with power electronics systems. This kinetic energy storage is currently under development. In the system presented in the paper, the regulated DC output voltage of the 6T thyristor bridge is controlled with a tolerance within ±10% of the reference voltage for a variable power load. The input voltage of the rectifier is a three-phase trapezoidal-shaped voltage from the rotating mogen, whose amplitude can vary from 0 to 650 V and frequency from 0 to 250 Hz voltage. The article presents example results of simulation tests of the mogen-based kinetic energy storage model with the thyristors’ firing angle control system. As part of the research, a prototype... Research on Energy Conversion in the Arc-Extinguishing Process of a Long-Gap Gas Lightning-Protection Device
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: arc, Energy Conversion, Energy Conversion, gas arc-extinguishing impulse discharge, impulse discharge, self-extinguishing arc
In this paper, a two-dimensional axisymmetric module of gas arc extinguishing was simulated using energy balance theories. We used simulation to study the energy distribution change during the gas arc-extinguishing process. We built a lightning impulse current experimental platform according to the IEC standard, and experiments verified the preliminary conclusions of the simulation. Comparison curves of the experimental data and simulation calculations were drawn in the range of 20 kV to 70 kV. Simulation and experimental results showed that the arc-extinguishing ability of long-gap gas arcs is negatively correlated with voltage level and positively correlated with distance. Furthermore, within the allowable range of conditions, increasing the length of the chamber rather than shortening it helps to extinguish the arc more effectively and quickly.

Selection of the Electric Drive for the Wood Waste Compacting Unit
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compacting process, modeling of mechanical systems, selection of electric drive
This work presents the study of the compaction and unloading process wood post-production waste, i.e., oak sawdust. The sawdust was compacted employing the forces F = 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 N. Each compacted sample was compressed so as to determine the force value Fc required for the destruction of the sample. For each compaction force, the coefficient of the friction value µ1 was determined for the sawdust−steel material pair, which was used in the construction of the sleeve and stamp compacting system employed in the study. The determined parameters of the compressive force Fc and the coefficient of friction µ1 as a function of the compaction force F enabled to determine the optimal process parameters. A proposed construction of the compacting unit with an electrical drive is provided in the following part of the work comprising a motor, gear wheels, cam and a compacting piston. The selection of the parameters for the compaction process and the drive is of ke... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aero-engine, Computational Fluid Dynamics, exhaust system, infrared radiation characteristics, reverse Monte Carlo method
Infrared stealth technology plays a vital role in improving the survivability of future aircraft. The exhaust system is the main source of infrared radiation on the rear side of the aircraft, and stealth coating is an effective measure to reduce the infrared radiation on the solid wall of the nozzle. Mature commercial computational fluid dynamics software was used to obtain and analyze accurate data of the flow field to study the infrared radiation characteristics of the stealth coating on the turbofan engine nozzle. Furthermore, infrared simulation software based on the reverse Monte Carlo method, line-by-line calculation technique, and database technology for high-temperature gas parameters of a narrowband model were used to numerically simulate the exhaust system of a turbofan engine with infrared suppression coating. Assuming that the damage percentage of the external adjusting plate is constant, the findings reveal that the overall infrared radiation intensity exhibits a steadily... [more]

Feasibility Study on the Influence of Data Partition Strategies on Ensemble Deep Learning: The Case of Forecasting Power Generation in South Korea
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: data partition, long short-term memory, power generation, Solar Panels, solar panels with weather
Ensemble deep learning methods have demonstrated significant improvements in forecasting the solar panel power generation using historical time-series data. Although many studies have used ensemble deep learning methods with various data partitioning strategies, most have only focused on improving the predictive methods by associating several different models or combining hyperparameters and interactions. In this study, we contend that we can enhance the precision of power generation forecasting by identifying a suitable data partition strategy and establishing the ideal number of partitions and subset sizes. Thus, we propose a feasibility study of the influence of data partition strategies on ensemble deep learning. We selected five time-series data partitioning strategies—window, shuffle, pyramid, vertical, and seasonal—that allow us to identify different characteristics and features in the time-series data. We conducted various experiments on two sources of solar panel datasets coll... [more]

Modeling of Direct-Drive Permanent Magnet Synchronous Wind Power Generation System Considering the Power System Analysis in Multi-Timescales
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: model simplification, power system simulation, wind power generation
The dynamics of wind power generation cannot be neglected in the modern power system and could have a great impact on the system dynamics, even raising the risk of a blackout. Because of this, power system simulation has to include the model of wind power generation. However, due to the high order of the full model of the wind power generator, it is impossible to model them in detail in the use of the power system dynamic simulation considering the thousands of wind generators in the grid. In this context, a simplified model is normally used with the trade-off in lower accuracy. As a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous wind power generation system (D-PMSG) would take up a certain occupation in the modern power system, a proper D-PMSG simplified model is needed in the power system simulation. For a different research purpose in a different timescale, a different complexity of the model can be used to maximize the accuracy, in the meantime speeding up the simulation. This paper pro... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3S wire, AC loss, experiment, HTS twisted cable, Simulation
Compared with traditional cables, superconducting multi-stage cables have the natural advantages of greater transmission power and less energy loss, which have gradually attracted attention. However, conventional multi-stage cables are based on low temperature superconducting (LTS) technology and there is considerable scope for improvement in their performance. In this paper, a novel structure of the multi-stage high temperature superconducting (HTS) twisted cable prepared by the soldered-stacked-square (3S) wire is proposed. The AC loss characteristics of the twisted cable are deeply studied by experiments and simulation. Through the experiment, the influence of the voltage-leads on the AC loss measurement accuracy is eliminated, and frequency dependent is shown in the AC loss of the twisted cable. Besides, the simulated value of AC loss is consistent with the experimental value, which verifies the accuracy of the simulation. The AC loss of twisted cable is only 20% of that of the thi... [more]

Slope Stability Numerical Analysis and Landslide Prevention of Coal Mine Waste Dump under the Impact of Rainfall—A Case Study of Janina Mine, Poland
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: landslide, mine waste dump, numerical modeling, slope monitoring, slope stability
In Poland, the mining waste from underground coal mines is commonly deposited in surface dump sites, forming slopes or piles of materials dozens of meters high. Because of the loose structure of a mine waste dump slope, landslides may occur after a heavy rainfall. This requires significant labor costs in reforming the mine waste dump sites and disturbs the continuity of the depositing operations. Moreover, if the mine waste dump sites located in the built-up areas, such as in the Janina mine waste dump, landslides apparently can threaten even lives and properties. Therefore, a mine waste dump stability analysis is necessary for ensuring safety. In this paper, slope stability analysis was conducted using numerical modeling under the impact of rainfall for the Janina mine waste dump, located in Libiąż, Poland. The results indicated that slope tends to loose stability in case of high rainfall intensity and short duration. Then, slope reinforcement using soil nailing and steel mesh was pro... [more]

A Review of Molten Salt Reactor Multi-Physics Coupling Models and Development Prospects
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: burnup, graphite dimensional change, helium bubbling, molten salt reactor, multi-physics model, neutronics and thermal-hydraulic coupling
Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are one type of GEN-IV advanced reactors that adopt melt mixtures of heavy metal elements and molten salt as both fuel and coolant. The liquid fuel allows MSRs to perform online refueling, reprocessing, and helium bubbling. The fuel utilization, safety, and economics can be enhanced, while some new physical mechanisms and phenomena emerge simultaneously, which would significantly complicate the numerical simulation of MSRs. The dual roles of molten fuel salt in the core lead to a tighter coupling of physical mechanisms since the released fission energy will be absorbed immediately by the molten salt itself and then transferred to the primary heat exchanger. The modeling of multi-physics coupling is regarded as one important aspect of MSR study, attracting growing attention worldwide. Up to now, great efforts have been made in the development of MSR multi-physics coupling models over the past 60 years, especially after 2000, when MSR was selected for one of t... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: district heating, energy system modeling, modeling tools, oemof, Optimization, Thermos, urban energy systems
Heating networks are highly relevant for the achievement of climate protection goals of urban energy systems. This is due to their high renewable energy potential combined with high plant efficiency and utilization rates. For the optimal integration and sector coupling of heating networks in holistic urban energy systems, open source energy system modeling tools are highly recommended. In this contribution, two open source approaches (the “Spreadsheet Energy System Model Generator”-integrated DHNx-Python module (DHNx/SESMG) and Thermos) are theoretically compared, and practically applied to a real-world energy system. Deviations within the results can be explained by incorrectly pre-defined parameters within Thermos and cannot be adjusted by the modeler. The simultaneity is underestimated in the case study by Thermos by more than 20%. This results in undersized heating plant capacities and a 50% higher number of buildings connected to the network. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Dynamic Modelling, induction motor, intelligent technique, model reference adaptive system (MRAS), observer, parameter estimation
An induction motor is generally used in industrial applications because it is reliable, robust, and low cost. Reliability is one of the essential parameters based on which the motor is selected, and the induction motor primarily comes into force. The well-founded induction motor gives good results under various operating states. To achieve this, the values of the motor are kept in mind. Dynamic simulation plays a significant part in evaluating the model’s design process to eliminate design errors in typical construction types and when testing the motor drive system. The induction motor is modeled in a synchronously revolving rotor flux-oriented frame, which is used as a reference. For sensorless vector control and induction motor control methods, accurate knowledge of a few induction motor parameters is necessary. An Application of the Hamilton−Ostrogradsky Principle to the Modeling of an Asymmetrically Loaded Three-Phase Power Line
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distributed parameter system, electric power system, extended Lagrangian, Hamilton–Ostrogradsky principle, interdisciplinary modeling, telegrapher’s equations, three-phase power supply line, unbalanced load
This paper presents a mathematical model of an electric power system which consists of a three-phase power line with distributed parameters and an equivalent, unbalanced RLC load cooperating with the line. The above model was developed on the basis of the modified Hamilton−Ostrogradsky principle, which extends the classical Lagrangian by adding two more components: the energy of dissipative forces in the system and the work of external non-conservative forces. In the developed model, there are four types of energy and four types of linear energy density. On the basis of Hamilton’s principle, the extended action functional was formulated and then minimized. As a result, the extremal of the action functional was derived, which can be treated as a solution of the Euler−Lagrange equation for the subsystem with lumped parameters and the Euler−Poisson equation for the subsystem with distributed parameters. The derived system of differential equations describes the entire physical system and... [more]

Power Flow Modeling of Multi-Circuit Transmission Lines
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric power systems, Modelling, multi-circuit power lines
To reduce the allocation of land for the construction of electric power facilities, it is possible to leverage multi-circuit overhead transmission lines (MCTLs), in which the conductors of several circuits of different voltage classes are placed on the same tower. The unique features of the arrangement of conductors on MCTL towers cause unequal inductances and capacitances of different phases. In addition, there are significant mutual electromagnetic influences on the line circuits. To account for these factors, it is advisable to model the power flow of electric power systems equipped with MCTLs using the phase frame of reference. On the basis of such models, it is possible to determine the power flows while taking into account lateral and transverse asymmetries and to analyze electromagnetic safety conditions along the routes of multi-circuit transmission lines. We proposed a technique for modeling power flows and electromagnetic fields of multi-circuit power transmission lines, in w... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biomethane, digital gas network, gas network, linepack management, Modelling
The current situation in Europe calls for the need of urgent measures to find sustainable alternatives to its outer dependence on natural gas. Biomethane injection into the existing gas infrastructure is a fundamental opportunity to be promoted that, however, causes increasing complexities in the management of natural gas grids.
