Detecting Pipeline Pathways in Landsat 5 Satellite Images with Deep Learning
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CNN, gas transport network, Landsat 5, pipeline detection, U-Net.
Energy system modeling is essential in analyzing present and future system configurations motivated by the energy transition. Energy models need various input data sets at different scales, including detailed information about energy generation and transport infrastructure. However, accessing such data sets is not straightforward and often restricted, especially for energy infrastructure data. We present a detection model for the automatic recognition of pipeline pathways using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to address this lack of energy infrastructure data sets. The model was trained with historical low-resolution satellite images of the construction phase of British gas transport pipelines, made with the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper instrument. The satellite images have been automatically labeled with the help of high-resolution pipeline route data provided by the respective Transmission System Operator (TSO). We have used data augmentation on the training data and trained our mo... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: optimal parameter, optimization algorithm, PEFC, polarization curve, relative humidity.
The development of green energy conversion devices has been promising to face climate change and global warming challenges over the last few years. Energy applications require a confident performance prediction, especially in polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), to guarantee optimal operation. Several researchers have employed optimization algorithms (OAs) to identify operating parameters to improve the PEFC performance. In the current study, several nature-based OAs have been performed to compute the optimal parameters used to describe the polarization curves in a PEFC. Different relative humidity (RH) values, one of the most influential variables on PEFC performance, have been considered. To develop this study, experimental data have been collected from a lab-scale fuel cell test system establishing different RH percentages, from 18 to 100%. OAs like neural network algorithm (NNA), improved grey-wolf optimizer (I-GWO), ant lion optimizer (ALO), bird swarm algorithm (BSA), and multi-... [more]

Heating Performances of a Large-Scale Factory Evaluated through Thermal Comfort and Building Energy Consumption
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, HVAC, large-scale factory, thermal comfort.
Workshops with a large area and a high ceiling height without compartments, such as large-scale assembly factories, have an uneven thermal comfort during heating, making it difficult to establish an effective heating strategy. In this study, we evaluate the heating performance of a large-scale factory based on thermal comfort and energy flow and discuss effective heating methods. In addition, an analysis of the heating performance of a large-scale factory is attempted for the first time. To analyze the heating performance, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and building energy simulation (BES) were used to confirm thermal comfort distribution and energy flow in a large-scale factory. Temperature distribution and thermal comfort were evaluated through CFD, and the temperature of a large-scale assembly factory was compared with experimental data. Based on the CFD results, the current heating level of large factories was predicted to be 15.4 °C, and the ADPIrev was 70%. Moreover, the BES... [more]

Modelling Methane Hydrate Saturation in Pores: Capillary Inhibition Effects
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capillary effects, formation inhibition, hydrate pore saturation, methane hydrate stability, numerical modelling, thermodynamics.
Experimental and field observations evidence the effects of capillarity in narrow pores on inhibiting the thermodynamic stability of gas hydrates and controlling their saturation. Thus, precise estimates of the gas hydrate global inventory require models that accurately describe gas hydrate stability in sediments. Here, an equilibrium model for hydrate formation in sediments that accounts for capillary inhibition effects is developed and validated against experimental data. Analogous to water freezing in pores, the model assumes that hydrate formation is controlled by the sediment pore size distribution and the balance of capillary forces at the hydrate−liquid interface. To build the formulation, we first derive the Clausius−Clapeyron equation for the thermodynamic equilibrium of methane and water chemical potentials. Then, this equation is combined with the van Genuchten’s capillary pressure to relate the thermodynamic properties of the system to the sediment pore size distribution an... [more]

Urban-Scale Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations with Boundary Conditions from Similarity Theory and a Mesoscale Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: atmospheric boundary layer, boundary conditions, built environment, Computational Fluid Dynamics, urban microclimate.
Mesoscale numerical weather prediction models usually provide information regarding environmental parameters near urban areas at a spatial resolution of the order of thousands or hundreds of meters, at best. If detailed information is required at the building scale, an urban-scale model is necessary. Proper definition of the boundary conditions for the urban-scale simulation is very demanding in terms of its compatibility with environmental conditions and numerical modeling. Here, steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) microscale simulations of the wind and thermal environment are performed over an urban area of Kozani, Greece, using both the k-ε and k-ω SST turbulence models. For the boundary conditions, instead of interpolating vertical profiles from the mesoscale solution, which is obtained with the atmospheric pollution model (TAPM), a novel approach is proposed, relying on previously developed analytic expressions, based on the Monin Obuhkov similarity theory, and one-way... Towards Understanding the Structure of Subcritical and Transcritical Liquid−Gas Interfaces Using a Tabulated Real Fluid Modeling Approach
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: diffuse-interface method (DIM), multi-component, PISO, real fluid model, SIMPLE, subcritical, supercritical, tabulation, transcritical, vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE).
A fundamental understanding and simulation of fuel atomization, phase transition, and mixing are among the topics researchers have struggled with for decades. One of the reasons for this is that the accurate, robust, and efficient simulation of fuel jets remains a challenge. In this paper, a tabulated multi-component real-fluid model (RFM) is proposed to overcome most of the limitations and to make real-fluid simulations affordable. Essentially, a fully compressible two-phase flow and a diffuse interface approach are used for the RFM model, which were implemented in the CONVERGE solver. PISO and SIMPLE numerical schemes were modified to account for a highly coupled real-fluid tabulation approach. These new RFM model and numerical schemes were applied to the simulation of different fundamental 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D test cases to better understand the structure of subcritical and transcritical liquid−gas interfaces and to reveal the hydro-thermodynamic characteristics of multicomponent jet m... An Extensive Study on Desorption Models Generated Based on Langmuir and Knudsen Diffusion
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: desorption, fluid flow, Modelling, unconventional reservoirs.
Although gas desorption is a known phenomenon, modeling fluid flow in tight gas reservoirs often ignores the governing desorption effect, assuming that viscous transport is the predominant controller, resulting in an erroneous prediction of mass transport and fluid flow calculations. Thus, developing a new model accommodating all the major contributing forces in such a medium is essential. This work introduces a new comprehensive flow model suitable for tight unconventional reservoirs, including viscous, inertia, diffusion, and sorption forces, to account for fluid transport. Based on Langmuir law and Knudsen diffusion effect, three models were generated and compared with different known models using synthetic data. The model was solved and analyzed for different scenario cases, and parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the desorption effect on different reservoir types using MATLAB. Results show that the contribution of the sorption mechanism to the flow increases with the red... [more]

Calculation Method of Allowable Continuous Current for Direct Burial Laying HVDC Underground Cable
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: allowable current, direct burial laying, HVDC underground cable, thermal resistance.
The calculation of the continuous allowable current of an underground cable is determined by various characteristics. To calculate the allowable current in cables with alternating magnetic fields such as AC, special phenomena such as the proximity effect and skin effect must be applied. However, there are no standards or research related to the calculation of the continuous allowable current of a DC power cable that does not have an alternating magnetic field. In this paper, a quantitative DC cable continuous allowable current calculation formula of direct burial laying was derived by applying the existing AC cable continuous allowable current calculation method to the DC system. We developed a calculation tool that can calculate the continuous allowable current of DC cables using the derived formula. Assuming the cable conditions (cable specification, laying conditions, soil characteristics, arrangement, and number of strands, etc.), a continuous allowable current simulation of DC cab... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coefficient of power (CP), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), J-shaped blade, starting torque, vertical axis offshore wind turbine.
In this study, the performance of offshore wind turbines at low tip speed ratio (TSR) is studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the performance of offshore wind turbines at low tip speed ratio (TSR) is improved by revising the blade structure. First, the parameters of vertical axis offshore wind turbine are designed based on the compactness iteration, a CFD simulation model is established, and the turbulence model is selected through simulation analysis to verify the independence of grid and time step. Compared with previous experimental results, it is shown that the two-dimensional simulation only considers the plane turbulence effect, and the simulation turbulence effect performs more obviously at a high tip ratio, while the three-dimensional simulation turbulence effect has well-fitting performance at high tip ratio. Second, a J-shaped blade with optimized lower surface is proposed. The study showed that the optimized J-shaped blade significantly improved its upwind t... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 sequestration, leakage risk analysis, numerical modelling, reservoir fluid migrations, reservoir simulations, sequestration capacity.
This paper addresses problems of reservoir fluid migrations in the process of CO2 sequestration in a partially depleted petroleum reservoir. A detailed analysis of the migrations is required to obtain fundamental characteristics of a sequestration structure, including estimation of its sequestration capacity and leakage risks. The paper presents a general discussion of the relevant mechanisms and their contributions to the analysed issues. The proposed approach to solve the problems relies on the usage of numerical structure modelling and simulations of the sequestration processes on numerical models of the structure. It is applied to a selected geological structure comprising a partially depleted gas reservoir. The modelling includes key types of reservoir fluid migrations: viscous multiphase transport and convection transport. It also takes into account other phenomena that affect fluid migrations including injected gas solubility in the formation water and gas trapping by capillary... [more]

Comparative Analysis of Strength and Modal Characteristics of a Full Tubular Pump and an Axial Flow Pump Impellers Based on Fluid-Structure Interaction
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial-flow pump, deformation, fluid-structure interaction, full tubular pump, modal analysis, numerical simulation, stress.
Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) was used to determine the structural mechanical characteristics of full tubular and axial-flow pumps. The results showed that as the flow rate increases, the total deformation and equivalent stress are significantly reduced. The max total deformation (MTD) and the max equivalent stress (MES) of the full tubular pump impeller occur on the outer edge of the blade. There are two stress concentrations in the full tubular pump impeller, one of which is located in the outlet area of the rim, and the other is located in the outlet area of the hub. However, the MES of the axial-flow pump appears in the center of the blade hub. The performance difference between the full tubular pump and the axial-flow pump is mainly caused by the clearance backflow. The natural frequency of the full tubular pump is lower than that of the axial-flow pump on the basis of the modal results. The MES of the full tubular pump is mainly concentrated at the junction of the blade and t... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airflow patterns, auxiliary ventilation system, CFD modelling, forcing with exhaust overlap ventilation system, methane concentrations, mine ventilation.
An overlap auxiliary ventilation system is very often used for driving roadways in methane-rich coal seams. An overlap zone between the outlets of the forcing duct ends with a whirl flow air-duct (WFAD) and the exhaust duct ends with a dust scrubber that is created by applying the overlap system. This study examines the distribution of methane concentrations at various distances in the overlap zone. Maintaining a long overlap zone could increase the advance of the face. Therefore, the impact of overlap zone length on the methane concentration distribution, in and beyond the overlap zone, is investigated. The evaluation of methane concentrations is performed utilizing a well-established computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The mathematical model of methane emissions into the roadway is adopted. Moreover, the CFD model is validated. A vortex of the return air, caused by the free airstream flowing out of the dust scrubber, is found. This air vortex is responsible for higher methan... [more]

Simulation Study on Active Air Flow Distribution Characteristics of Closed Heat Pump Drying System with Waste Heat Recovery
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow distribution, flow field, heat pump drying, Simulation.
A tridimensional turbulent flow model is established for a closed heat pump drying system with waste heat recovery to improve the drying air flow characteristics and reduce the energy consumption of air circulation. The active flow distribution mode is introduced to guide air flowing in the system’s drying cabinet, top air duct, mixing zone, and heat pump. It is found that the wind velocity in the cabinet’s supply channel is greater than that in the return channel, the velocity distribution in the top duct is uneven, and the outlet velocity of the bypass fan is high and a vortex forms. A partition panel added in the top duct and modulating fans in the drying cabinet are proposed to solve these problems. The simulation results show that removing the circulating fan, changing the volume flow of the bypass fan, adopting the alternative operation mode of the bypass fans, reducing the air volume flow of the supply fan, and reducing the total pressure of the fans can improve the dry air velo... Numerical Investigation for Three-Dimensional Multiscale Fracture Networks Based on a Coupled Hybrid Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: mimetic Green element method, multiscale fractures, reservoir simulation, three-dimensional fracture visualization.
The mismatching between the multi-scale feature of complex fracture networks (CFNs) in unconventional reservoirs and their current numerical approaches is a conspicuous problem to be solved. In this paper, the CFNs are divided into hydraulic macro-fractures, induced fractures, and natural micro-fractures according to their mode of origin. A hybrid model coupling various numerical approaches is proposed to match the three-dimensional multi-scale fracture networks. The macro-fractures with high-conductivity and wide-aperture are explicitly characterized by a mimetic Green element method-based hierarchical fracture model. The induced fractures and natural micro-fractures that have features of low-conductivity and small-openings are upscaled to the dual-medium grid and enhanced matrix grid through the equivalent continuum-medium method, respectively. Subsequently, some benchmark cases are implemented to confirm the high-precision and high-robustness of the proposed hybrid model that indeed... [more]

Coupled Basin and Hydro-Mechanical Modeling of Gas Chimney Formation: The SW Barents Sea
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Barents Sea, basin modeling, chimney, ductile rock, gas leakage, hydro-mechanical modeling, porosity waves, reservoir modeling.
Gas chimneys are one of the most intriguing manifestations of the focused fluid flows in sedimentary basins. To predict natural and human-induced fluid leakage, it is essential to understand the mechanism of how fluid flow localizes into conductive chimneys and the chimney dynamics. This work predicts conditions and parameters for chimney formation in two fields in the SW Barents Sea, the Tornerose field and the Snøhvit field in the Hammerfest Basin. The work is based on two types of models, basin modeling and hydro-mechanical modeling of chimney formation. Multi-layer basin models were used to produce the initial conditions for the hydro-mechanical modeling of the relatively fast chimneys propagation process. Using hydro-mechanical models, we determined the thermal, structural, and petrophysical features of the gas chimney formation for the Tornerose field and the Snøhvit field. Thermal Performance Investigation of Slotted Fin Minichannel Heat Sink for Microprocessor Cooling
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: base temperature, numerical simulation, slotted fin minichannel heat sink, thermal management.
Due to high heat flux generation inside microprocessors, water-cooled heat sinks have gained special attention. For the durability of the microprocessor, this generated flux should be effectively removed. The effective thermal management of high-processing devices is now becoming popular due to high heat flux generation. Heat removal plays a significant role in the longer operation and better performance of heat sinks. In this work, to tackle the heat generation issues, a slotted fin minichannel heat sink (SFMCHS) was investigated by modifying a conventional straight integral fin minichannel heat sink (SIFMCHS). SFMCHSs with fin spacings of 0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 1.5 mm were numerically studied. The numerical results were then compared with SIFMCHSs present in the literature. The base temperatures recorded for two slots per fin minichannel heat sink (SPFMCHS), with 0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 1.5 mm fin spacings, were 42.81 °C, 46.36 °C, and 48.86 °C, respectively, at 1 LPM. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: entropy generation analysis, Eulerian stochastic field method, FGM, flames D and E.
A second law analysis in combustion systems is performed along with an exergy loss study by quantifying the entropy generation sources using, for the first time, three different approaches: a classical-thermodynamics-based approach, a novel turbulence-based method and a look-up-table-based approach, respectively. The numerical computation is based on a hybrid filtered Eulerian stochastic field (ESF) method coupled with tabulated detailed chemistry according to a Famelet-Generated Manifold (FGM)-based combustion model. In this work, the capability of the three approaches to capture the effect of the Re number on local exergy losses is especially appraised. For this purpose, Sandia flames D and E are selected as application cases. First, the validation of the computed flow and scalar fields is achieved by comparison to available experimental data. The Effect of OPV Module Size on Stability and Diurnal Performance: Outdoor Tests and Application of a Computer Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: modelling of OPVs, OPV, organic photovoltaic, outdoor testing, stability.
The outdoor performance of large area Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs) is investigated in this work. Initially, the diurnal performance of the three modules is determined and found to be similar. Subsequently module degradation is monitored, and it is found that the larger area module displays a significantly greater stability as compared to the smallest area module; in fact the larger module displays a T50% (time to fall to 50% of its original value) of 191 days whilst the smallest module displays a T50% of 57 days. This is attributed to an increased level of water infiltration due to a larger perimeter-to-area ratio. These findings are then used to verify a computer simulation model which allows the model parameters, series and shunt resistances, to be calculated. It is determined that the series resistance is not an obvious obstruction at these module sizes. The findings of this work provide great promise for the application of OPV technology on a larger scale.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: crosswind angle, crosswind velocity, numerical simulation, stepped fill, thermal performance.
To enhance the cooling capacity of a single air inlet induced draft cooling tower (SIDCT), the stepped fill layout pattern is proposed in this paper. A three-dimensional numerical model is established and validated by field measurement data. The cooling capacity of towers equipped with uniform fill and stepped fill is compared under various crosswind velocities (0 m/s−12 m/s) and crosswind angles (0°−180°). The results showed that the ventilation rate of the total tower with stepped fill is increased. Under the studied crosswind velocity and angle, the cooling capacity of the stepped fill tower is superior to the uniform fill tower. After using stepped fill, the mean drop of outlet water temperature rises by 0.29 °C, 0.27 °C, 0.17 °C, 0.10 °C, and 0.19 °C, corresponding to crosswind angles from 0° to 180°. Equivalent Parallel Strands Modeling of Highly-Porous Media for Two-Dimensional Heat Transfer: Application to Metal Foam
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: geometric modelling, graphite foam, heat transfer, metal foam, porous media.
A new geometric modeling of isotropic highly-porous cellular media, e.g., open-cell metal, ceramic, and graphite foams, is developed. The modelling is valid strictly for macroscopically two-dimensional heat transfer due to the fluid flow in highly-porous media. Unlike the current geometrical modelling of such media, the current model employs simple geometry, and is derived from equivalency conditions that are imposed on the model’s geometry a priori, in order to ensure that the model produces the same pressure drop and heat transfer as the porous medium it represents. The model embodies the internal structure of the highly-porous media, e.g., metal foam, using equivalent parallel strands (EPS), which are rods arranged in a spatially periodic two-dimensional pattern. The dimensions of these strands and their arrangement are derived from equivalency conditions, ensuring that the porosity and the surface area density of the model and of the foam are indeed equal. The article presents results of thermodynamic analysis using a zero-dimensional mathematical models of a negative CO2 emission power plant. The developed cycle of a negative CO2 emission power plant allows the production of electricity using gasified sewage sludge as a main fuel.
