Hamidreza Behi, Theodoros Kalogiannis, Mahesh Suresh Patil, Joeri Van Mierlo, Maitane Berecibar.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air cooling assisted heat pipe (ACAH), computational fluid dynamic (CFD), heat pipe, lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery, thermal management system (TMS).
This paper presents the concept of a hybrid thermal management system (TMS) including natural convection, heat pipe, and air cooling assisted heat pipe (ACAH) for electric vehicles. Experimental and numerical tests are described to predict the thermal behavior of a lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery cell in a fast discharging process (8C rate). Specifications of different cooling techniques are deliberated and compared. The mathematical models are solved by COMSOL Multiphysics® (Stockholm, Sweden), the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The simulation results are validated against experimental data with an acceptable error range. The results specify that the maximum cell temperatures for the cooling systems of natural convection, heat pipe, and ACAH reach 56, 46.3, and 38.3 °C, respectively. We found that the maximum cell temperature experiences a 17.3% and 31% reduction with the heat pipe and ACAH, respectively, compared with natural convection.

Yuchao Xu, Jason Hou, Kostadin Ivanov.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discontinuity factors, generalized equivalence theory, nodal expansion method, transport-corrected SP3.
The Simplified Spherical Harmonic (SPN) approximation was first introduced as a three-dimensional (3D) extension of the plane-geometry Spherical Harmonic (PN) equations. A third order SPN (SP3) solver, recently implemented in the Nodal Expansion Method (NEM), has shown promising performance in the reactor core neutronics simulations. This work is focused on the development and implementation of the transport-corrected interface and boundary conditions in an NEM SP3 solver, following recent published work on the rigorous SPN theory for piecewise homogeneous regions. A streamlined procedure has been developed to generate the flux zero and second order/moment discontinuity factors (DFs) of the generalized equivalence theory to minimize the error introduced by pin-wise homogenization. Moreover, several colorset models with varying sizes and configurations are later explored for their capability of generating DFs that can produce results equivalent to that using the whole-core homogenizatio... Mario Sanz, José Ignacio Moreno, Gregorio López, Javier Matanza, Julio Berrocal.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power line communications, power line intelligent metering evolution, simulations, traffic analysis, web applications.
AMIs (Advanced Metering Infrastructures) present an important role in Smart City environments, especially from the point of view of distribution and customers, offering control and monitoring capabilities. The use of PLC (Power Line Communication) technology offers a wide range of advantages in AMI, including not needing to deploy an additional communication infrastructure. However, the electrical network was not initially designed for communications, as these networks pose problems depending on the connected loads, such as network impedance variation, frequency selectivity or noise. For this reason, the use of simulators is proposed to facilitate the deployments based on PLC networks, and analysis and diagnosis tools for the identification of problems in operating networks are also required. This paper presents a toolkit for evaluating and analyzing the performance of PLC networks. This toolkit is composed of SimPRIME, a simulator for the evaluation of NB-PLC PRIME (PoweR line Intelli... Haneol Kim, Jongkyu Kim.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavity, chemical reaction, decomposition, heat transfer, methane, numerical simulation, optical, reactor, Solar Thermal.
This study aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and effectively utilize wasted resources by converting methane, the main component of biogas, into hydrogen. Therefore, a reactor was developed to decompose methane into carbon and hydrogen using solar thermal sources instead of traditional energy sources, such as coal and petroleum. The optical distributions were analyzed using TracePro, a Monte Carlo ray-tracing-based program. In addition, Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics program, was used for the heat and mass transfer, and chemical reaction. The cylindrical indirect heating reactor rotates at a constant speed to prevent damage by the heat source concentrated at the solar furnace. The inside of the reactor was filled with a porous catalyst for methane decomposition, and the outside was surrounded by insulation to reduce heat loss. The performance of the reactor, according to the cavity model, was calculated when solar heat was concentrated on the reactor surf... [more]

Keywords: Aspen Plus software, compressed air drying, cryogenic air separation, oxygen production, Peng–Robinson equation of state, process scheme.
Oxygen production from air belongs to energy-intense processes and, as a result, possibilities for its decrease are a frequent topic of optimization studies, often performed with simulation software such as Aspen Plus or Aspen HYSYS. To obtain veritable results and sound solutions, a suitable calculation method hand in hand with justified assumptions and simplifications should form the base of any such studies. Thus, an analysis of the study by Hamayun et al., Energies 2020, 13, 6361, has been performed, and several weak spots of the study, including oversimplified assumptions, improper selection of a thermodynamic package for simulation and omission of certain technological aspects relevant for energy consumption optimization studies, were identified. For each of the weak spots, a recommendation based on good praxis and relevant scientific literature is provided, and general recommendations are formulated with the hope that this comment will aid all researchers utilizing Aspen Plus an... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual-stator, linear compressor, permanent magnet motor, ring-type magnet.
This paper presents the modular topologies of the dual-stator dual-winding permanent magnet (PM) linear motors for linear compressors used in the electrified transportation application. Compared to the conventional PM linear motor in compressor, the proposed modular model is designed with the same volume but a higher thrust force density and a further higher air pressure in air cylinder, which are competitive in the compressor industry. The proposed compact PM linear motors are constructed with tubular windings in both inner and outer stators, as well as the ring-type magnet in mover. Simulation results of motor characteristics are compared by three-dimensional finite element method (3D FEM). Finally, the prototypes of the proposed PM linear motors are manufactured and tested for the linear compressor application.

Keywords: aircraft, commutator device, differential equations, Fokker–Planck equation, starter-generator.
The article describes the method of predicting the reliability and durability of an aircraft commutator, which is a primary source of electric energy in helicopters. Tests were conducted for 10 starter-generators. From this research it follows that the technical condition of brushes and bearings has a significant impact on the reliability of starter-generators. The reliability of starter-generators was determined based on the method consisting of two stages that was adopted: the first stage involved determining the density function of changes in diagnostic parameter depending on the operating time, but the second stage included the assessment of the reliability of bearings of the starter-generator taking into account the real flight profile. The first stage of the adopted method consisted of defining the dynamic model of changing the length of the starter-generator’s brush, which became the probabilistic model. Subsequently, based on differential equations, Fokker−Planck partial differ... [more]

Khaled Enab, Hamid Emami-Meybodi.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, diffusion, huff-n-puff, hysteresis, ultratight reservoir.
Cyclic solvent injection, known as solvent huff-n-puff, is one of the promising techniques for enhancing oil recovery from shale reservoirs. This study investigates the huff-n-puff performance in ultratight shale reservoirs by conducting large-scale numerical simulations for a wide range of reservoir fluid types (retrograde condensate, volatile oil, and black oil) and different injection gases (CO2, C2H6, and C3H8). A dual-porosity compositional model is utilized to comprehensively evaluate the impact of multicomponent diffusion, adsorption, and hysteresis on the production performance of each reservoir fluid and the retention capacity of the injection gases. The results show that the huff-n-puff process improves oil recovery by 4−6% when injected with 10% PV of gas. Huff-n-puff efficiency increases with decreasing gas-oil ratio (GOR). C2H6 provides the highest recovery for the black oil and volatile oil systems, and CO2 provides the highest recovery for retrograde condensate fluid typ... [more]
Co-Gasification Characteristics of Coal and Biomass Using CO2 Reactant under Thermodynamic Equilibrium Modelling
M. Shahabuddin, Sankar Bhattacharya.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aspen plus modelling, Biomass, co-gasification, CO2 reactant, Coal, Syngas.
This study assessed the entrained flow co-gasification characteristics of coal and biomass using thermodynamic equilibrium modelling. The model was validated against entrained flow gasifier data published in the literature. The gasification performance was evaluated under different operating conditions, such as equivalence ratio, temperature, pressure and coal to biomass ratio. It is observed that the lower heating value (LHV) and cold gas efficiency (CGE) increase with increasing temperature until the process reaches a steady state. The effect of pressure on syngas composition is dominant only at non-steady state conditions (<1100 °C). The variation in syngas composition is minor up to the blending of 50% biomass (PB50). However, the PB50 shows a higher LHV and CGE than pure coal by 12%and 18%, respectively. Overall, biomass blending of up to 50% favours gasification performance with an LHV of 12 MJ/kg and a CGE of 78%.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low carbon vehicle, market diffusion model, perceived value theory, purchase intention.
Significant negative impact caused by climate changes, such as economy and life losses, has been experienced globally in recent years, which has called for imminent development and adoption of low carbon technologies in order to mitigate the impact. In 2020, the Chinese government outlined the ‘Dual Carbon’ Goal where its carbon emission will peak before 2030 whilst China will become ‘Carbon Neutral’ before 2060. In China, the amount of carbon emissions from the transportation industry stands in second place and it is predicted that the carbon emission of China’s automobile industry will reach between 21.5 and 30 billion tons in 2030. Actions should be taken as quickly as possible to facilitate the transition from traditional fossil fuel vehicles to low carbon vehicles such as electric vehicles in order to reduce carbon emissions effectively. Based on the questionnaire that is designed to survey the electrification of online ride-hailing vehicles, this paper first establishes a consume... [more]

Keywords: light gradient boosting, multilayer perceptron, permutation feature importance, Shapley additive explanations, solar radiation, support-vector regression.
Machine learning (ML) models are commonly used in solar modeling due to their high predictive accuracy. However, the predictions of these models are difficult to explain and trust. This paper aims to demonstrate the utility of two interpretation techniques to explain and improve the predictions of ML models. We compared first the predictive performance of Light Gradient Boosting (LightGBM) with three benchmark models, including multilayer perceptron (MLP), multiple linear regression (MLR), and support-vector regression (SVR), for estimating the global solar radiation (H) in the city of Fez, Morocco. Then, the predictions of the most accurate model were explained by two model-agnostic explanation techniques: permutation feature importance (PFI) and Shapley additive explanations (SHAP). The results indicated that LightGBM (R2 = 0.9377, RMSE = 0.4827 kWh/m2, MAE = 0.3614 kWh/m2) provides similar predictive accuracy as SVR, and outperformed MLP and MLR in the testing stage. Both PFI and SH... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, engine design, scavenging performance, two-stroke engines.
The scavenging process of two-stroke engines plays a fundamental role in cylinder flow patterns and in the overall engine performance. In this work, 3D CFD simulations of the scavenging in a uniflow, two-stroke, compression ignition engine for general aviation, named GF56, have been performed by using a 3D finite-volume FANS equations solver with k-ϵ closure. The GF56 engine consists of six cylinders, separated into two quasi-symmetric banks. Both the right and the left banks, together with the corresponding cylinders, are carefully analyzed. Charging and trapping efficiencies are computed as a function of the delivery ratio for different mass flow rates entering into the plenum, and the influence of the exhaust pressure and of the cylinder’s location in the bank are analyzed. The results show that the fresh air trapped during the scavenging process is quite similar for each cylinder of the right bank and it is about 92% of the in-cylinder mass. The cylinder’s location in the bank by i... [more]

Applying the syngas combustion membrane reactor to fire tube boiler can integrate oxygen separation, syngas combustion, and steam generation in a single apparatus. In this study, a CFD model for oxygen permeation and syngas combustion in a two-pass LSCoF-6428 tubular membrane reactor for fire tube boiler application was developed to study the effects of the inlet temperature, the sweep gas flow rate, and the syngas composition on the reactor performance. It is shown that the inlet temperature has a strong effect on the reactor performance. Increasing the inlet temperature can efficiently and significantly improve the oxygen permeability and the heat production capacity. A 34-times increase of oxygen permeation rate and a doubled thermal power output can be obtained when increasing the inlet temperature from 1073 to 1273 K. Keywords: combustion modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics, pulverized coal combustion, turbulence modelling, two-phase flow modelling.
A swirling pulverized coal flame is computationally investigated. A Eulerian−Lagrangian formulation is used to describe the two-phase flow. Turbulence is modelled within a RANS (Reynolds averaged numerical simulation) framework. Four turbulence viscosity- (TV) based models, namely the standard k-ε model, realizable k-ε model, renormalization group theory k-ε model, and the shear stress transport k-ω model are used. In addition, a Reynolds stress transport model (RSM) is employed. The models are assessed by comparing the predicted velocity fields with the measurements of other authors. In terms of overall average values, the agreement of the predictions to the measurements is observed to be within the range 20−40%. A better performance of the RSM compared to the TV models is observed, with a nearly twice as better overall agreement to the experiments, particularly for the swirl velocity. In the second part of the investigation, the resolution of the discrete particle phase in modelling... [more]

Keywords: Aspen Plus, biomass gasification, energy analysis, hydrothermal carbonization, SOFC.
An innovative process based on hydrothermal carbonization, gasification, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) technologies was developed using a commercial process simulation software called ASPEN Plus. The object of this work is to study plant efficiency under various operating conditions. The hydrothermal pre-treatment (HTC) at 200 and 250 °C was modelled as a black box based on the experimental results. The gasifier was modelled as a single reactor vessel with both the fluidized bed steam gasification of solid fuel and the hot gas cleaning system. The SOFC was modelled as a simple grey box with the ASPEN Plus blocks. The effect of HTC temperature and steam/carbon (S/C) ratio on the syngas composition and yield and plant efficiency was studied. The results show that the gasification of hydrochar obtained at 200 °C with S/C ratio of 0.6 gives the best results, namely an energy output of SOFC equal to 1.81 kW/kgBiomass, and overall process efficiency of 36%.

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed networks, macromodeling, rational approximation, s-parameters, vector fitting.
This paper presents the modeling of high speed distributed networks characterized by S-parameters frequency data using the rational Krylov fitting (RKFIT) algorithm. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the method to compute stable rational approximation that fit given S-parameters data. In addition, it is shown that RKFIT has some advantages when compared to the well-established Vector Fitting (VF) method, such as more accurate fitting, less dependence on the choice of the initial poles of the algorithm, and faster convergence. Numerical examples are implemented using RKFIT and the results are compared with VF and the Loewner Matrix (LM) algorithm.

Keywords: centre of gravity, electromechanical drives, estimation the working load, modelling of the electromechanical drives, wheelchair.
This study aimed at analysing the influence of the position of the centre of gravity variability and the movement velocity on the demand for a torque and work time coverage of a wheelchair with an electromechanical drive. The variable parameter in the study was the configuration of the wheelchair, namely changes in the position of the batteries which changed the weight distribution. An analytical model describing the demand for torque was used in the analysis. The set of equations was introduced into the numerical calculation software. Simulations were carried out which allowed it to analyse selected parameters of the wheelchair dynamics. An increase in the torque demand was observed due to the increase in the mass of the system from 427.7 N to 533.1 N, ranging from 6.1% to 31.6% at the simulated velocity v7 = 4.2 m/s. The increase in the demand for torque due to the increase in velocity of the wheelchair from v2 = 1.05 m/s to v7 = 4.2 m/s ranged from 25.9% to 31.6% compared to the ref... [more]
Asymmetric Split-Gate 4H-SiC MOSFET with Embedded Schottky Barrier Diode for High-Frequency Applications
Kyuhyun Cha, Kwangsoo Kim.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 4H-SiC, asymmetric, body diode, split gate, switching loss.
4H-SiC Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) with embedded Schottky barrier diodes are widely known to improve switching energy loss by reducing reverse recovery characteristics. However, it weakens the static characteristics such as specific on-resistance and breakdown voltage. To solve this problem, in this paper, an Asymmetric 4H-SiC Split Gate MOSFET with embedded Schottky barrier diode (ASG-MOSFET) is proposed and analyzed by conducting a numerical TCAD simulation. Due to the asymmetric structure of ASG-MOSFET, it has a relatively narrow junction field-effect transistor width. Therefore, despite using the split gate structure, it effectively protects the gate oxide by dispersing the high drain voltage. The Schottky barrier diode (SBD) is also embedded next to the gate and above the Junction Field Effect transistor (JFET) region. Accordingly, since the SBD and the MOSFET share a current path, the embedded SBD does not increase in RON,SP of MOSFET. Therefore,... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrode design, equivalent circuit modelling, PEMFC.
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is an important tool for fuel-cell analysis and monitoring. This study focuses on the low-AC frequencies (2−0.1 Hz) to show that the thickness of the catalyst layer significantly influences the overall resistance of the cell. By combining known models, a new equivalent circuit model was generated. The new model is able to simulate the impedance signal in the complete frequency spectrum of 105−10−2 Hz, usually used in experimental work on polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). The model was compared with experimental data and to an older model from the literature for verification. The electrochemical impedance spectra recorded on different MEAs with cathode catalyst layer thicknesses of approx. 5 and 12 µm show the appearance of a third semicircle in the low-frequency region that scales with current density. It has been shown that the ohmic resistance contribution (Rmt) of this third semicircle increases with the catalyst layer’s thickness. Furth... [more]
Small-Signal Modeling of Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Converter Considering the Delay Associated to the Leakage Inductance
Diego Ochoa, Antonio Lázaro, Pablo Zumel, Marina Sanz, Jorge Rodriguez de Frutos, Andrés Barrado.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC-DC power conversion, injected-absorbed-current method, phase-shifted full-bridge converter, small-signal model, zero-voltage-switching.
This paper demonstrates that in the Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge (PSFB) buck-derived converter, there is a random delay associated with the blanking time produced by the leakage inductance. This random delay predicts the additional phase drop that is present in the frequency response of the open-loop audio-susceptibility transfer function when the converter shows a significant blanking time. The existing models of the PSFB converter do not contemplate the delay and gain differences associated to voltage drop produced in the leakage inductor of the transformer. The small-signal model proposed in this paper is based on the combination of two types of analysis: the first analysis consists of obtaining a small-signal model using the average modeling technique and the second analysis consists of studying the natural response of the power converter. The dynamic modeling of the Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge converter, including the random delay, has been validated by simulations and experimental tes... [more]
