Pore-Scale Analysis of Condensate Blockage Mitigation by Wettability Alteration
Paula K. P. Reis, Marcio S. Carvalho.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compositional modeling, condensate blockage, pore-network modeling, wettability alteration.
Liquid banking in the near wellbore region can lessen significantly the production from gas reservoirs. As reservoir rocks commonly consist of liquid-wet porous media, they are prone to liquid trapping following well liquid invasion and/or condensate dropout in gas-condensate systems. For this reason, wettability alteration from liquid to gas-wet has been investigated in the past two decades as a permanent gas flow enhancement solution. Numerous experiments suggest flow improvement for immiscible gas-liquid flow in wettability altered cores. However, due to experimental limitations, few studies evaluate the method’s performance for condensing flows, typical of gas-condensate reservoirs. In this context, we present a compositional pore-network model for gas-condensate flow under variable wetting conditions. Different condensate modes and flow patterns based on experimental observations were implemented in the model so that the effects of wettability on condensing flow were represented.... [more]

Keywords: Al:ZnO (AZO), atomic force microscopy (AFM), degradation degree, failure rate, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, N-doped Cu2O absorber layer, numerical electro-optical modeling, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), silicon tandem heterojunction solar cell, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), X-ray diffraction (XRD).
This study is aimed at increasing the performance and reliability of silicon-based heterojunction solar cells with advanced methods. This is achieved by a numerical electro-optical modeling and reliability analysis for such solar cells correlated with experimental analysis of the Cu2O absorber layer. It yields the optimization of a silicon tandem heterojunction solar cell based on a ZnO/Cu2O subcell and a c-Si bottom subcell using electro-optical numerical modeling. The buffer layer affinity and mobility together with a low conduction band offset for the heterojunction are discussed, as well as spectral properties of the device model. Experimental research of N-doped Cu2O thin films was dedicated to two main activities: (1) fabrication of specific samples by DC magnetron sputtering and (2) detailed characterization of the analyzed samples. This last investigation was based on advanced techniques: morphological (scanning electron microscopy—SEM and atomic force microscopy—AFM), structur... [more]

Keywords: heat sink, multiphysics coupling, PCM, temperature field, thermal network parameters, thyristor.
Operating temperature is an important parameter of thyristors to ensure the stable operation of power electronic devices. Thermal management technology is of great significance for improving the reliability of thyristors. In this study, the performance of a phase change material (PCM) mesh-finned heat sink is investigated for the thermal management of thyristors. A multi-physical coupling model of the PCM mesh-finned heat sink is established to analyze the effects of different power losses, air velocities, heights of fins, and thickness of PCM on the thermal performance of the PCM heat sink. The influence of thermal and flow fields on PCM is considered in this model. Furthermore, the heat sink design is optimized to improve the thermal performance based on the calculation results of thermal network parameters. The results show that the power losses, the air velocity, the height of fins, and the thickness of PCM significantly affect the protection ability of the PCM heat sink. After opt... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current interruption, DC circuit breaker, magnetic field, plasma physics, vacuum arc, vacuum circuit breaker, vacuum interrupter, zero-crossing.
In this paper, the effect of an external ultrafast transverse magnetic field (UFTMF) on a vacuum arc in the diffused mode has been studied. According to the results of studies, a novel approach for making a zero-crossing in a DC arc current has been presented. Plasma voltage fluctuations of the vacuum arc, which are caused by UFTMF, have been investigated via finite element simulation and two-fluid description of plasma physics. By making an appropriate UFTMF through an external circuit, the arc current can be commuted successfully from the vacuum interrupter (VI) to a parallel capacitor and charge it up. In this way, a zero-crossing in the arc current can be achieved, and the current will be interrupted by the VI. Simulation results, which are supporting physical backgrounds for this analysis, have been presented in this paper while technological issues for industrial implementation of this concept have been discussed in detail.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, energetic macroscopic representation, energy consumption, heating ventilation air conditioning, Simulation, traction.
The energy consumption of an electric vehicle is primarily due to the traction subsystem and the comfort subsystem. For a regular trip, the traction energy can be relatively constant but the comfort energy has variation depending on seasonal temperatures. In order to plan the annual charging operation of an eco-campus, a simulation tool is developed for an accurate determination of the consumption of an electric vehicle throughout year. The developed model has been validated by comparison with experimental measurement of a real vehicle on a real driving cycle. Different commuting trips are analyzed over a complete year. For the considered city in France (Lille), the comfort energy consumption has an overconsumption up to 33% in winter due to heating, and only 15% in summer due to air conditioning. The urban commuting driving cycle is more affected by the comfort subsystem than extra-urban trips.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: optimal settings, PVT hybrid solar collectors, Simulation, weather conditions.
The potential absorption of solar energy in photovoltaic thermal (PVT) hybrid solar collectors at different tilt angles was compared in the present study. The optimal tilt angles were tested in three variants: during 1 day, 1 year and a period of 30 years. Simulations were performed based on actual weather data for 30 years, including average hourly total radiation, insolation and air temperature. The apparent movement of the Sun across the sky, solar radiation properties, and the electrical and thermal efficiency of a PVT collector were also taken into account in the simulation model. The optimal orientation of the absorber surface was determined by solving an optimization task. The results of the study indicate that in the long-term perspective, the collector’s performance is maximized when the absorber is positioned toward the south at an elevation angle of 34.1°.

Keywords: comfort of use, digital modelling, energy performance, historic structure, thermovision, U thermal transmittance measurements.
The paper discusses thermal quality improvement in historic buildings. It is based on a case study of a wooden historical building in an architectural style typical of Zakopane, located in the Podhale region of Poland. The building’s historical value and timber structure prevent the application of typical thermal retrofitting solutions. This paper presents an analysis of the possibilities of the improvement of energy performance of a historic building (villa) which included: a review of the available energy performance improvement solutions applicable to this type of building, with a particular focus on applying internal insulation; a technical condition assessment using non-invasive methods, the identification of problematic areas in terms of the thermal retrofitting of buildings with timber walls and decks; in situ tests: thermovision tests which showed the places with temperature distribution field disturbances in the building’s envelope, focusing on thermal bridges; measurements of... 4H-SiC Double-Trench MOSFET with Side Wall Heterojunction Diode for Enhanced Reverse Recovery Performance
Junghun Kim, Kwangsoo Kim.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 4H-SiC, body diode, double trench, free-wheeling diode, heterojunction diode, MOSFET, reverse recovery, switching loss.
In this study, a novel 4H-SiC double-trench metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) with a side wall heterojunction diode is proposed and investigated by conducting numerical technology computer-aided design simulations. The junction between P+ polysilicon and the N-drift layer forming a heterojunction diode on the side wall of the source trench region suppresses the operation of the PiN body diode during the reverse conduction state. Therefore, the injected minority carriers are completely suppressed, reducing the reverse recovery current by 73%, compared to the PiN body diodes. The switching characteristics of the proposed MOSFET using the heterojunction diode as a freewheeling diode was compared to the power module with a conventional MOSFET and an external diode as a freewheeling diode. It is shown that the switching performance of the proposed structure exhibits equivalent characteristics compared to the power module, enabling the elimination of an external free... [more]
Elastic and Frictional Properties of Fault Zones in Reservoir-Scale Hydro-Mechanical Models—A Sensitivity Study
Torben Treffeisen, Andreas Henk.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: faults, finite element modelling, hydro-mechanical modelling, reservoir.
The proper representation of faults in coupled hydro-mechanical reservoir models is challenged, among others, by the difference between the small-scale heterogeneity of fault zones observed in nature and the large size of the calculation cells in numerical simulations. In the present study we use a generic finite element (FE) model with a volumetric fault zone description to examine what effect the corresponding upscaled material parameters have on pore pressures, stresses, and deformation within and surrounding the fault zone. Such a sensitivity study is important as the usually poor data base regarding specific hydro-mechanical fault properties as well as the upscaling process introduces uncertainties, whose impact on the modelling results is otherwise difficult to assess. Altogether, 87 scenarios with different elastic and plastic parameter combinations were studied. Numerical modelling results indicate that Young’s modulus and cohesion assigned to the fault zone have the strongest... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregation, ancillary services, distributed energy resources, Optimization, power system operation.
Nowadays, ancillary services (ASs) are usually provided by large power generating units located in transmission networks, while smaller assets connected to distribution systems remain passive. It is expected that active distribution systems will start to play an important role due to numerous issues related to power system operation caused mainly by developing renewable generation and restrictions imposed on conventional power generating units by climate policies. The future development of the power system management will also lead to the establishment of new market agents such as distributed resource aggregators (DRAs). The article presents the concept of the DRA as part of an active distribution system enabling small resources to participate in wholesale markets, provide ASs and indicates the functions of the DRA coordinator in the modern power system. The proposed method of the DRA structure modelling with the use of the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is aimed at evaluating... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal phase-out, decarbonisation, electricity price, generation adequacy, Italy, optimization model and simulation, price analysis.
Although decarbonisation is one of the most important macro-trends of this century, electricity generation from coal power plants is still broadly common. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a premature coal power plants phase-out on the Italian day-ahead electricity market. For this purpose, two electricity price forecasts, related to different scenarios between 2019 and 2030, and two different hypotheses for the creation of electricity spot price, were compared. The results from the different scenarios show that coal power plants phase-out determines a small variation in electricity price when bid-up is not considered; instead, when operators’ bid-up is included in the study, the price variation becomes relevant.

Keywords: air-conditioning, air-management metrics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), data center, design of experiments (DOE), energy conservation, prediction accuracy.
In data centers, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) consumes 30−40% of total energy consumption. Of that portion, 26% is attributed to fan power, the ventilation efficiency of which should thus be improved. As an alternative method for experimentations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used. In this study, “parameter tuning”—which aims to improve the prediction accuracy of CFD simulation—is implemented by using the method known as “design of experiments”. Moreover, it is attempted to improve the thermal environment by using a CFD model after parameter tuning. As a result of the parameter tuning, the difference between the result of experimental-measurement results and simulation results for average inlet temperature of information-technology equipment (ITE) installed in the ventilation room of a test data center was within 0.2 °C at maximum. After tuning, the CFD model was used to verify the effect of advanced insulation such as raised-floor fixed panels and show th... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), fast charging, interleaved dc–dc converter, Si devices, SiC devices.
Widespread dissemination of electric mobility is highly dependent on the power converters, storage systems and renewable energy sources. The efficiency and reliability, combined with the emerging and innovative technologies, are crucial when speaking of power converters. In this paper the interleaved dc−dc topology has been considered for EV charging, due to its improved reliability. The efficiency comparison of the SiC-MOSFET and Si-IGBT-based converters has been done on wide range of switching frequency and output inductances. The interleaved converters were considered with the optimal switching parameters resulting from the analysis done on a detailed parasitic circuit model, ensuring minimum losses and maintaining the safe operating area. The analysis included the comparison of different inductors, and for the selected ones the complete system efficiency and cost were conducted. The results indicate the benefits when SiC-MOSFETs are applied to the interleaved dc−dc topology for wid... [more]

Keywords: numerical modeling, staggered grid finite-difference method, wave field.
This paper aims to provide a quantitative understanding of the performance of numerical modeling of a wave field equation using general-purpose processors. In particular, this article presents the most important aspects related to the memory workloads and execution time of the numerical modeling of both acoustic and fully elastic waves in isotropic and anisotropic mediums. The results presented in this article were calculated for the staggered grid finite difference method. Our results show that the more realistic the seismic wave simulations that are performed, the more the demand for memory and the computational capacity of the computing environment increases. The results presented in this article allow the estimation of the memory requirements and computational time of wavefield modeling for the considered model (acoustic, elastic or anisotropic) so that their feasibility can be assessed in a given computing environment and within an acceptable time. Keywords: extrapolation method, ideal source equivalent, increment, multi-rate real-time simulation, Norton equivalent.
For the problem of poor accuracy of the existing multi-rate simulation methods, this paper proposes a multi-rate real-time simulation method based on the Norton equivalent, compared with multi-rate simulation method based on the ideal source equivalent. After the Norton equivalence of the fast subsystem and the slow subsystem are established, they are solved simultaneously at the junction nodes. In order to reduce the amount of the simulation calculation, the Norton equivalent circuit is obtained by incremental calculation. The data interaction between the fast subsystem and the slow subsystem is realized by extrapolation method. For ensuring the real-time performance of the simulation, the method of the slow subsystem calculates ahead of the fast subsystem is given for the slow subsystem with a large amount of calculation. Finally, the AC/DC hybrid power system was simulated on the real-time simulation platform (FPGA-based Real-Time Digital Solver, FRTDS), and the simulation results w... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gaussian processes, large eddy simulation (LES), Machine Learning, turbulent multiphase flows.
This study focuses on establishing a surrogate model based on machine learning techniques to predict the time-averaged spatially distributed behaviors of vaporizing liquid jets in turbulent air crossflow for momentum flux ratios between 5 and 120. This surrogate model extends a previously developed Gaussian-process-based framework applicable to laminar flows to accommodate turbulent flows and demonstrates that in addition to detailed fields of primitive variables, second-order turbulence statistics can also be predicted using machine learning techniques. The framework proceeds in 3 steps—(1) design of experiment studies to identify training points and conducting high-fidelity calculations to build the training dataset; (2) Gaussian process regression (supervised training) for the range of operating conditions under consideration for gaseous and dispersed phase quantities; and (3) error quantification of the surrogate model by comparing the machine learning predictions with the truth mo... March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrothermal (ET) simulation, finite-element method (FEM), model-order reduction (MOR), multicellular power MOSFET, silicon carbide (SiC).
This paper discusses the benefits of an advanced highly-efficient approach to static and dynamic electrothermal simulations of multicellular silicon carbide (SiC) power MOSFETs. The strategy is based on a fully circuital representation of the device, which is discretized into an assigned number of individual cells, high enough to analyze temperature and current nonuniformities over the active area. The cells are described with subcircuits implementing a simple transistor model that accounts for the utmost influence of the traps at the SiC/SiO2 interface. The power-temperature feedback is emulated with an equivalent network corresponding to a compact thermal model automatically generated by the FANTASTIC tool from an accurate 3D mesh of the component under test. The resulting macrocircuit can be solved by any SPICE-like simulation program with low computational burden and rare occurrence of convergence issues.

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cross-correlation function, localization accuracy, partial discharge location, power cable.
Locating the partial discharge (PD) source is one of the most effective means to locate local defects in power cable lines. The sampling rate and the frequency-dependent characteristic of phase velocity have an obvious influence on localization accuracy based on the times of arrival (TOA) evaluation algorithm. In this paper, we present a cross-correlation algorithm based on propagation distance to locate the PD source in cable lines. First, we introduce the basic principle of the cross-correlation function of propagation distance. Then we verify the proposed method through a computer simulation model and investigate the influences of propagation distance, sampling rate, and noise on localization accuracy. Finally, we perform PD location experiments on two 250 m 10 kV XLPE power cables using the oscillation wave test system. The simulation and experiment results indicate that compared with traditional TOA evaluation methods, the proposed method has superior locating precision.

Keywords: demand side bidding, Energy, Energy Efficiency, Gaussian mixture model, MCMC.
Over the years, electricity consumption behavior in Brazil has been analyzed due to financial and social problems. In this context, it is important to simulate energy prices of the energy efficiency auctions in the Brazilian electricity market. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method generated simulations; thus, several samples were generated with different sizes. It is possible to say that the larger the sample, the better the approximation to the original data. Then, the Kernel method and the Gaussian mixture model used to estimate the density distribution of energy price, and the MCMC method were crucial in providing approximations of the original data and clearly analyzing its impact. Next, the behavior of the data in each histogram was observed with 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 samples, considering only one scenario. The sample which best approximates the original data in accordance with the generated histograms is the 10,000th sample, which consistently follows the behavior of t... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), high temperature corrosion, pulverized fuel-firing systems.
Gaseous sulfur species play a major role in high temperature corrosion of pulverized coal fired furnaces. The prediction of sulfur species concentrations by 3D-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation allows the identification of furnace wall regions that are exposed to corrosive gases, so that countermeasures against corrosion can be applied. In the present work, a model for the release of sulfur and chlorine species during coal combustion is presented. The model is based on the mineral matter transformation of sulfur and chlorine bearing minerals under coal combustion conditions. The model is appended to a detailed reaction mechanism for gaseous sulfur and chlorine species and hydrocarbon related reactions, as well as a global three-step mechanism for coal devolatilization, char combustion, and char gasification. Experiments in an entrained flow were carried out to validate the developed model. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of an entrained flow reactor were performed b... [more]
Intraday Electricity Pricing of Night Contracts

Keywords: 15-min. contracts, econometric modeling, fundamentals, intraday electricity market, night contracts, renewable power forecasts.
This paper investigates the intraday electricity pricing of 15-min. contracts in night hours. We tailor a recently introduced econometric model with fundamental impacts, which is successful in describing the pricing of day contracts. Our estimation results show that the mean reversion and the positive price impact of neighboring contracts are generic features of the price formation process on the intraday market, independent of the time of day. Intraday auction prices have higher explanatory power for the pricing of night than day contracts, particularly, for the first and last 15-min. contract in a night hour. Intradaily updated forecasts of wind power infeed are the only significant fundamental factors for intraday electricity prices at night. Neither expected conventional capacities nor the slope of the merit order curve contribute to explaining price dynamics. Overall, we conclude that fundamentals lose in importance in night hours and the 15-min. intraday market is rather driven b... [more]

Keywords: arch dam, concept drift, concrete temperature field, construction simulation, grasshopper optimization algorithm, interval prediction, relevance vector machine.
Joint grouting simulation is an important aspect of arch dam construction simulation. However, the current construction simulation model simplifies the temperature factors in joint grouting simulation, which leads to the difference between the simulation results and the actual construction schedule. Furthermore, the majority of existing temperature prediction research is based on deterministic point predictions, which cannot quantify the uncertainties of the prediction values. Thus, this study presents a real-time construction simulation method coupling a concrete temperature field interval prediction model to address these problems. First, a real-time construction simulation model is established. Secondly, this paper proposes a concrete temperature interval prediction method based on the hybrid-kernel relevance vector machine (HK-RVM) with the improved grasshopper optimization algorithm (IGOA). Keywords: classification of load curves, clustering validity, dimensionality reduction, inter-class distance, singular value decomposition, weighted Euclidean distance.
Clustering electric load curves is an important part of the load data mining process. In this paper, we propose a clustering algorithm by combining singular value decomposition and KICIC clustering algorithm (SVD-KICIC) for analyzing the characteristics of daily load curves to mitigate some of the traditional clustering algorithm problems, such as only considering intra-class distance and low computational efficiency when dealing with massive load data. Our method identifies effective daily load curve characteristics using the singular value decomposition technique to improve dimensionality reduction, which improves low computational efficiency by reducing the number of dimensions inherent in big data. Additionally, the method performs SVD on the load data to obtain singular values for determination of weight of the KICIC algorithm, which leverages intra-class and inter-class distances of the load data and further improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, we perf... [more]

Keywords: power supply systems, short-circuit current, synchronous generator.
This paper presents an analysis of the short-circuit currents of a synchronous generator with a rated power of 16 kVA. For this purpose, the authors carried out measurements of real short-circuit currents during laboratory tests. Additionally, a simulation model of the generator was developed according to the individual machines data from the catalog and field calculations in ANSYS Maxwell software. Based on the mentioned research, the authors compared waveforms of the symmetrical short-circuit currents. In this paper, the last compared family of short-circuit current waveforms was obtained using analytic calculations. As the presented comparison shows, the assumed method of selecting short-circuit waveforms impacted their values. However, the difference in energy related to short-circuit currents did not influence on the selection of the short-circuit protections, especially at low values of steady-state short-circuit currents and short time constants characteristic for the generators...
