Evaluation of Tooth Space Pressure and Incomplete Filling in External Gear Pumps by Means of Three-Dimensional CFD Simulations
Alessandro Corvaglia, Massimo Rundo, Paolo Casoli, Antonio Lettini.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, external gear pump, fluid power, incomplete filling, pressure ripple.
The paper presents the computational fluid dynamics simulation of an external gear pump for fluid power applications. The aim of the study is to test the capability of the model to evaluate the pressure in a tooth space for the entire shaft revolution and the minimum inlet pressure for the complete filling. The model takes into account the internal fluid leakages and two different configurations of the thrust plates have been considered. The simulations in different operating conditions have been validated with proper high dynamics transducers measuring the internal pressure in a tooth space for the entire shaft revolution. Steady-state simulations have been also performed in order to detect the fall of the flow rate due to the incomplete filling of the tooth spaces when the inlet pressure is reduced. It has been demonstrated that, despite the need of a compromise for overcoming the limitation of considering fixed positions of the gears’ axes and of the thrust plates, significant resul... [more]

Qiang Zhang, Kaijun Jiang, Yanqiang Kong, Jiangbo Wu, Xiaoze Du.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: comprehensive dynamic model, external receiver, solar power tower, temperature control strategy.
Due to the change of direct normal irradiance (DNI) and the change of output power load, the receiver of the solar tower is in an unstable state in the actual operation. In this paper, a 100 MW external cylindric receiver is designed and modelled. The dynamic and comprehensive model is established for the receiver, including the thermal and mechanical equations. The temperature control strategy is applied to the receiver model. The validity of the control strategy is verified by disturbance experiments, including DNI, the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF), and the weather data on a cloudy day. The response characteristics of the receiver are demonstrated. Its thermal lag characteristics and restraining effect on the fluctuating environment are revealed. The dangerous occasion of the receiver during operation are detected, including the overheat of the local panel, and the dissociation point of the molten salt. Both the robustness and the deficiency of the control strat... [more]
Empirical Models Applied to Distributed Energy Resources—An Analysis in the Light of Regulatory Aspects
Lucas Deotti, Ivo Silva Júnior, Leonardo Honório, André Marcato.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: empirical modeling, IEC 61853, outdoor validation, photovoltaic performance, review.
According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61853 standard, the power rating of photovoltaic (PV) modules must be done on a measurement matrix that broadly covers the ranges of operating conditions encountered in the field. These results are becoming more frequent in recent module datasheets. This paper investigates the effectiveness of applying existing empirical PV performance models while using a matrix with 18 operational records, similar to the 22 that were recommended by IEC 61853, as an alternative to the thousands of records that are conventionally used to determine their coefficients. A review of fifteen empirical models is presented and the procedures for determining their coefficients are discussed. In order to validate them, they were applied to data from fourteen PV modules, which remained installed outdoors for about one year, in three locations with distinct climate types. Although the uncertainties that were obtained with the proposed approach, as c... [more]

Guilherme Pontes Luz, Rodrigo Amaro e Silva.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collective photovoltaic systems, energy communities, energy systems modeling and optimization.
The recently approved regulation on Energy Communities in Europe is paving the way for new collective forms of energy consumption and production, mainly based on photovoltaics. However, energy modeling approaches that can adequately evaluate the impact of these new regulations on energy community configurations are still lacking, particularly with regards to the grid tariffs imposed on collective systems. Thus, the present work models three different energy community configurations sustained on collective photovoltaics self-consumption for a small city in southern Portugal. This energy community, which integrates the city consumers and a local winery, was modeled using the Python-based Calliope framework. Using real electricity demand data from power transformers and an actual winery, the techno-economic feasibility of each configuration was assessed. Results show that all collective arrangements can promote a higher penetration of photovoltaic capacity (up to 23%) and a modest reducti... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt perforation, catalog mechanical properties, dynamic analysis, Lagrangian mechanics, linear drive, punching die, timing belt.
The subject of the dynamic analysis presented in the article is the linear drive system with a timing belt utilized in the automatic device for polymer composite belt perforation. The analysis was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the timing belt was modeled with all the relevant dynamic phenomena; subsequently, the tension force of the belt required for the correct operation of the belt transmission was determined. The necessary parameters for belt elasticity, vibration damping, and inertia are based exclusively on the catalog data provided by the manufacturer. During the second stage, equations of motion were derived for the designed drive system with a timing belt, and characteristics were identified to facilitate the optimal selection of electromechanical drives for the construction solution under analysis. The presented methodology allows for designing an effective solution that may be adapted for other constructions. The obtained results showed the influence of the k... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), common electricity usage, general contract, household electricity usage, medium-voltage apartments, single contract.
For apartment complexes receiving medium-voltage electrical energies, the apartments can choose an electricity charging method between the single and general contracts in the Republic of Korea. In the single contract, a residential high-voltage rate is applied to the total electrical energy consumptions of households and common areas. On the other hand, in the general contract, different rate plans are applied to the electrical energy consumptions of households and their common areas, where a generic high-voltage rate plan is applied to the common consumption. Hence, depending on the amounts and composition of the consumptions, both contracts have their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of the total electricity charge. The management office of an apartment complex can select its preferred contract considering the amount and composition of the power consumptions on an annual basis. In this paper, we first formulate a model for the contracts and analyze their properties based on Mont... [more]

Zhenxiang Zhang, Jin Yang, Shengnan Chen, Qibin Ou, Yichi Zhang, Ximo Qu, Yafei Guo.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: completion, horizontal well, pulsed gravel packing, solid-liquid two-phase flow.
The gravel packing completion method for horizontal wells has the advantages of maintaining high oil production for a long time, maintaining wellbore stability, and preventing sand production, so it has become the preferred completion method for horizontal wells. At present, this technology still faces the problems of high sand bed height and poor gravel migration. In order to improve the efficiency of gravel packing in horizontal wells, pulsed gravel packing technology for horizontal wells is proposed for the first time. Based on the mechanism of hydraulic pulse, the Eulerian−Eulerian model, k-ε model based on the renormalization group theory (RNG k-ε model), and Fluent are used to simulate the solid-liquid two-phase flow. By optimizing the parameters such as frequency and amplitude of pulse waveform, the optimal pulse waveform of pulsed gravel packing in horizontal wells is determined. The effects of parameters such as sand-carrying fluid displacement, sand-carrying fluid viscosity,... [more]

Hongqiang Li, Ruihe Wang.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: helical contour modeling, imaging while drilling, real-time, spatial interpolation, surface reconstruction, wellbore.
A wellbore surface is an irregular surface structure. The distribution of points on the wellbore surface measured based on the drilling diameter is not uniform. Thus, the conventional modeling method based on a point cloud cannot satisfy the needs of real-time measurement updating and wellbore display. This study proposes a spiral profile method for drilling shaft surface reconstruction. Scattered data along the drilling diameter are measured, and an inverse distance weighting cylindrical space surface algorithm with iterative interpolation is used to obtain the spiral angle and pitch of a relatively homogeneous helical contour line along the surface of the shaft. Using sets of four adjacent points in the spiral, quadrilaterals are formed, and then all obtained quadrilaterals are used to form the wellbore inner surface structure. This method can further construct the outer surface spiral contour line to advance the quadrilateral surface to the spatial hexahedron structure. The caliper... [more]

Keywords: benchmark dataset, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fluid–structure interaction, fully nonlinear potential flow, heave decay, linear potential flow, physical tests, RANS, sphere, wave energy converters.
Highly accurate and precise heave decay tests on a sphere with a diameter of 300 mm were completed in a meticulously designed test setup in the wave basin in the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Laboratory at Aalborg University, Denmark. The tests were dedicated to providing a rigorous benchmark dataset for numerical model validation. The sphere was ballasted to half submergence, thereby floating with the waterline at the equator when at rest in calm water. Heave decay tests were conducted, wherein the sphere was held stationary and dropped from three drop heights: a small drop height, which can be considered a linear case, a moderately nonlinear case, and a highly nonlinear case with a drop height from a position where the whole sphere was initially above the water. The precision of the heave decay time series was calculated from random and systematic standard uncertainties. At a 95% confidence level, uncertainties were found to be very low—on average only about 0.3% of the respective dr... [more]

Keywords: assessment, geothermal resource, Monte Carlo simulation, North Jiangsu Basin, thermal reservoir.
Geothermal energy has been recognized as an important clean renewable energy. Accurate assessment of geothermal resources is an essential foundation for their development and utilization. The North Jiangsu Basin (NJB), located in the Lower Yangtze Craton, is shaped like a wedge block of an ancient plate boundary and large-scale carbonate thermal reservoirs are developed in the deep NJB. Moreover, the NJB exhibits a high heat flow background because of its extensive extension since the Late Mesozoic. In this study, we used the Monte Carlo method to evaluate the geothermal resources of the main reservoir shallower than 10 km in the NJB. Compared with the volumetric method, the Monte Carlo method takes into account the variation mode and uncertainties of the input parameters. The simulation results show that the geothermal resources of the sandstone thermal reservoir in the shallow NJB are very rich, with capacities of (6.6−12) × 1020 J (mean 8.6 × 1020 J), (5.1−16) × 1020 J (mean 9.1 × 1... Keywords: Dynamic Modelling, floating platform, hydrostatic analysis, LCOE, marine renewable, offshore wind energy, wind energy, wind farm.
Wind power is emerging as one of the most sustainable and low-cost options for energy production. Far-offshore floating wind turbines are attractive in view of exploiting high wind availability sites while minimizing environmental and landscape impact. In the last few years, some offshore floating wind farms were deployed in Northern Europe for technology validation, with very promising results. At present time, however, no offshore wind farm installations have been developed in the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this work is to comprehensively model an offshore floating wind turbine and examine the behavior resulting from a wide spectrum of sea and wind states typical of the Mediterranean Sea. The flexible and accessible in-house model developed for this purpose is compared with the reference model FAST v8.16 for verifying its reliability. Then, a simulation campaign is carried out to estimate the wind turbine LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy). Based on this, the best substructure is cho... [more]

A simplified mathematical model of parabolic-trough solar thermal power plants, which allow one to carry out an energetic characterization of the main thermal parameters that influence the solar field performance, was evaluated through a comparison of simulation results. Two geographical locations were selected to evaluate the mathematical model proposed in this work—one in each hemisphere—and design considerations according with the practical/operational experience were taken. Furthermore, independent simulations were performed using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, their results were compared with those obtained by the simplified model. According with the above, the mathematical model allows one to carry out simulations with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, in which the equations that allow the plant to be energetically characterized are composed of a series of logical conditions that help identify boundary conditions between dawn and sunset, direct normal irrad... Katarzyna Bizon.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalytic reactor, fluidized bed, heterogenous model, pseudohomogeneous model, steady state, transient behavior.
Comparative analysis of the steady-state and transient properties of a bubbling fluidized-bed catalytic reactor obtained according to different mathematical models of the emulsion zone was performed to verify the commonly used assumption regarding the pseudohomogeneous nature of this zone. Four different mathematical models of the fluidized-bed reactor dynamics were formulated, based on different thermal and diffusional conditions at the gas-solid interface and within the catalyst pellet, namely the model based on the assumption of pseudohomogeneous character for the emulsion zone, and a group of two-scale models accounting for the heterogeneous character of this zone. It was demonstrated that, while the pseudohomogeneous model of the emulsion zone predicts almost identical behavior of the reactor at steady-state as the proposed heterogeneous models, it may fail in the prediction of the reactor start-up behavior, especially when dealing with highly exothermic processes run at relativel... Keywords: concentrated solar power system, FEM, numerical model, parabolic trough collector, solar energy, structural integrity.
Nowadays the design of large-scale structures can be effectively improved by the adoption of numerical models. Even if experimental tests still play a fundamental role, a methodological approach that combines experimental testing and modelling technique can significantly improve the understanding of the matter. This, in fact, would result in a more reliable optimization process, drastically reducing efforts and uncertainties towards the implementation of the final product. The present work deals with the development of a finite element model for the analysis of a full-scale prototype of an innovative parabolic trough collector. The collector is analysed under several load conditions in order to evaluate its structural behaviour. Each load configuration is also numerically reproduced. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing both the global (stiffness) and local (strain state) behaviour of the structure. Specifically, the comparison between experimental data... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lava flow mapping, machine learning classifier, optical data, synthetic aperture radar, volcano remote sensing.
Lava flow mapping has direct relevance to volcanic hazards once an eruption has begun. Satellite remote sensing techniques are increasingly used to map newly erupted lava, thanks to their capability to survey large areas with frequent revisit time and accurate spatial resolution. Visible and infrared satellite data are routinely used to detect the distributions of volcanic deposits and monitor thermal features, even if clouds are a serious obstacle for optical sensors, since they cannot be penetrated by optical radiation. On the other hand, radar satellite data have been playing an important role in surface change detection and image classification, being able to operate in all weather conditions, although their use is hampered by the special imaging geometry, the complicated scattering process, and the presence of speckle noise. Thus, optical and radar data are complementary data sources that can be used to map lava flows effectively, in addition to alleviating cloud obstruction and i... [more]

Keywords: DFT, harmonic analysis, IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018, multiple-resonator, PMU, rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), recursive algorithm, total vector error (TVE).
This article deals with the implementation of the P-Class PMU compliant with IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 by usage of a multiple-resonator (MR)-based approach for harmonic analysis having been proposed recently. In previously published articles, it has been shown that a trade-off between opposite requirements is possible by shifting a measurement time stamp along the filter window. Positioning the time stamp in a proximity of the time window center assures flat-top frequency responses. In this article, through simulation tests carried out under various conditions, it is shown that requirements of the IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 can be satisfied by the second and third order MR structure for particular conditions of the time stamp location.

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, forced ventilation, natural ventilation, timber construction, ventilated façade.
Ventilated façades can help to reduce summer building thermal loads and, therefore, energy consumption due to air-conditioning systems thanks to the combined effect of the solar radiation reflection and the natural or forced ventilation into the cavity. The evaluation of ventilated façades behavior and performance is complex and requires a complete thermo-fluid dynamic analysis. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methodology has been developed for the complete assessment of the energy performance of a prefabricated timber−concrete composite ventilated façade module in different operating conditions. Global numerical results are presented as well as local ones in terms of heat flux, air velocity, and temperature inside the façade cavity. The results show the dependency of envelope efficiency on solar radiation, the benefits that natural convection brings on potential energy savings and the importance of designing an optimized façade geometry. The results concerning the f... [more]

Keywords: air–steam gasification, Aspen Plus, Biomass, bubbling fluidised bed, sensitivity analysis.
The gasification process involves several reactions that occur simultaneously and are interrelated by several independent variables. Simulation tools can help us to understand the process behaviour and predict the efficiency and final composition of the products. In this work, two thermodynamic equilibrium models developed in Aspen Plus® software were assessed: a non-stoichiometric model based on the feedstock composition and on the most probable compounds expected from the results of the gasification process using minimisation of Gibbs free energy and a stoichiometric model based on a set of chemical reactions considered as the most relevant to describe the gasification process. Both models were validated with experimental data from a bubbling fluidised bed semi-pilot scale gasifier using pine kernel shells (PKS) as feedstock. The influence of temperature, stoichiometric ratio (SR) and steam to biomass ratio (SBR) were analysed. Overall, predictions of the gas composition and gasifica... [more]

Energy savings based upon use of smart WiFi thermostats ranging from 10 to 15% have been documented, as new features such as geofencing have been added. Here, a new benefit of smart WiFi thermostats is identified and investigated; namely, as a tool to improve the estimation accuracy of residential energy consumption and, as a result, estimation of energy savings from energy system upgrades, when only monthly energy consumption is metered. This is made possible from the higher sampling frequency of smart WiFi thermostats. In this study, collected smart WiFi data are combined with outdoor temperature data and known residential geometrical and energy characteristics. Most importantly, unique power spectra are developed for over 100 individual residences from the measured thermostat indoor temperature in each and used as a predictor in the training of a singular machine learning models to predict consumption in any residence. The best model yielded a percentage mean absolute error (MAE) fo... [more]

Large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) are nowadays growing in popularity due to the increase in the energy production by renewable energy sources, which in general have a random intermittent nature. Currently, several redox flow batteries have been presented as an alternative of the classical ESS; the scalability, design flexibility and long life cycle of the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) have made it to stand out. In a VRFB cell, which consists of two electrodes and an ion exchange membrane, the electrolyte flows through the electrodes where the electrochemical reactions take place. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are a very powerful tool to develop feasible numerical models to enhance the performance and lifetime of VRFBs. This review aims to present and discuss the numerical models developed in this field and, particularly, to analyze different types of flow fields and patterns that can be found in the literature. The numerical studies presented in this review... [more]
Analytical Determination of the Slot and the End-Winding Portion of the Winding-to-Rotor Capacitance for the Prediction of Shaft Voltage in Electrical Machines
Jan Ole Stockbrügger, Bernd Ponick.
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EDM currents, shaft voltage, traction motor, winding-to-rotor capacitance.
Common-mode voltage, caused by a 2-level inverter, is a source of discharge currents in motor bearings. Due to the capacitive coupling, between the stator winding and the rotor, an image of the common-mode voltage is produced on the shaft—which can exceed the dielectric strength of the lubrication film of motor bearings. Accurate determination of the winding-to-rotor capacitance is necessary to predict the shaft voltage. This article proposes a novel analytical determination of the slot and the end-winding portion of the winding-to-rotor capacitance. The calculation rules, which are based on the method of image charges and the charge simulation method, take into account the continuity and the boundary conditions of the field areas. Results are validated by means of finite element method simulations. Notably, deviations are in the single-digit percentage range. Furthermore, the presented methods are simple to implement.

Keywords: clustering, consumer categorization, feature construction, load duration curve, load profiling, peak demand.
This paper proposes a novel feature construction methodology aiming at both clustering yearly load profiles of low-voltage consumers, as well as investigating the stochastic nature of their peak demands. These load profiles describe the electricity consumption over a one-year period, allowing the study of seasonal dependence. The clustering of load curves has been extensively studied in literature, where clustering of daily or weekly load curves based on temporal features has received the most research attention. The proposed feature construction aims at generating a new set of variables that can be used in machine learning applications, stepping away from traditional, high dimensional, chronological feature sets. This paper presents a novel feature set based on two types of features: respectively the consumption time window on a daily and weekly basis, and the time of occurrence of peak demands. An analytic expression for the load duration curve is validated and leveraged in order to... [more]

Keywords: demand side management, grid-interactive efficient buildings, urban-scale energy modeling, valuation.
Several companies, universities, and national laboratories are developing urban-scale energy modeling that allows the creation of a digital twin of buildings for the simulation and optimization of real-world, city-sized areas. Prior to simulation-based assessment, a baseline of savings for a set of utility-defined use cases was established to clarify the initial business case for specific energy efficient building technologies. In partnership with a municipal utility, 178,337 OpenStudio and EnergyPlus models of buildings in the utility’s 1400 km2 service area were created, simulated, and assessed with measures for quantifying energy, demand, cost, and emissions reductions of each building. The method of construction and assumptions behind these models is discussed, definitions of example measures are provided, and distribution of savings across the building stock is provided under a maximum technical adoption scenario.
