March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: analysis, artificial light, ecological impact, ecosystems, energy performance indicators, light pollution, lighting metrics, road lighting
Road lighting uniformity is an essential lighting quality parameter for motorists and pedestrians and varies with lighting design parameters. Increased road lighting uniformity may result in benefits, such as increased reassurance and perceived safety for pedestrians or an increased overall visual perception. However, no previous study has investigated how road lighting uniformity varies with lighting design scenarios or how the uniformity of various lighting design scenarios affects other essential parameters, such as energy performance and obtrusive light. This study aimed to investigate: (I) how uniformity varies with different road lighting design scenarios, and (II) how uniformity correlates with energy performance and risk for increasing spill light. The study is limited to pedestrian roads. We performed photometric calculations in ReluxDesktop for more than 1.5 million cases with single-sided pole arrangements and for various geometries of road width, pole distance, pole height,... Performance Study of Methane Dry Reforming on Ni/ZrO2 Catalyst
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dry reforming of CH4, greenhouse gases, nickel, synthesis gas, ZrO2
Dry reforming of methane (DRM) has important and positive environmental and industrial impacts, as it consumes two of the top greenhouse gases in order to produce syngas (H2 and CO) and thus hydrogen (H2). The performance of DRM of conversions of CH4 and CO2 was investigated over Ni/ZrO2 catalysts. The catalytic performance of all prepared catalysts for DRM was assessed in a micro-tubular fixed bed reactor under similar reaction conditions (i.e., activation and reaction temperatures at 700 °C, a feed flow rate of 70 mL/min, reaction temperature, and a 440 min reaction time). Various characterization techniques, such as BET, CO2-TPD, TGA, XRD, EDX, and TEM, were employed. The zirconia support was modified with MgO or Y2O3. The yttria-stabilized zirconia catalyst (5Ni15YZr) provided the optimum activity performance of CH4 and CO2 conversions of 56.1 and 64.3%, respectively, at 700 °C and a 70 mL/min flow rate; this catalyst also had the highest basicity. The Ni-based catalyst was promote... [more]

Comparing the Energy System of a Facility with Uncertainty about Future Internal Carbon Prices and Energy Carrier Costs Using Deterministic Optimisation and Two-Stage Stochastic Programming
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decarbonisation, deterministic optimisation, energy system optimisation, internal carbon pricing, optimisation results’ robustness, proxy prices, two-stage stochastic programming
For an organisation, one aspect on the path to a decarbonised future is the cost-optimal decarbonisation of their facilities’ energy systems. One method to guide the decarbonisation is internal carbon pricing. However, the design process of decarbonisation pathways, guided by internal carbon prices, can be challenging, since the energy system environment consists of many uncertainties. Despite the numerous uncertainties and existing methods to address uncertainties during the optimisation process, the optimisation of a facility’s energy system is often done by assuming perfect knowledge of all relevant input parameters (deterministic optimisation). Since real-world decisions can never be based on perfect knowledge and certain decisions might lead to path dependencies, it is important to consider the robustness of a solution in the context of developments that vary from the assumed scenarios. So far, no academic work has analysed the potential benefits of using an optimisation method th... [more]

Iron Recovery Technology of Red Mud—A review
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: fluidized bed reduction, iron recovery, pyrometallurgical method, red mud
RM (red mud), which comes from the Bayer process, has a huge annual output and is harmful to the environment. Because of the high iron content in RM, the process of iron recovery from RM can reduce the amount of RM well and create economic benefits, so it is a promising process. The paper focuses on the review on the research of the iron recovery method from RM, which includes the physical recovery method, chemical recovery method and emerging recovery method. By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these processes, it is concluded that the fluidized bed reduction is a promising process that can be rapidly applied to the industry, but it still needs more investigation to overcome the current technical difficulties in the near future.

Comparative Analysis of Overheating Risk for Typical Dwellings and Passivhaus in the UK
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, global warming, overheating risk, Passivhaus, thermal comfort
There is growing concern that airtight and well-insulated buildings designed to limit heat loss in temperate and cold climates could unintentionally elevate the risk of overheating in summers. Existing literature primarily uses dynamic simulation to investigate this problem due to the difficulty of obtaining large-scale in-performance data. To address this gap, we undertake a meta-analysis of large-scale indoor air temperature data for 195 UK dwellings, as a study of performance in a temperate climate. Of these, 113 are baseline (i.e., typical existing dwellings) and the rest designed to the high-performance Passivhaus standard. Using both Passivhaus and the well-known CIBSE TM59 overheating standards, this study found that there were few overheated cases for any building type. However, the average summer nighttime temperature of Passivhaus bedrooms was 1.6 °C higher than baseline, with 20 out of 31 measured bedrooms exceeding the overheating criterion, and the average overheating hour... Green Growth, Economic Development, and Carbon Dioxide Emissions: An Evaluation Based on Cointegration and Vector Error Correction Models
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, carbon dioxide emissions, economic development level, environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model, vector error correction (VEC) model
Economic development is mainly dependent on fossil fuels. The massive use of fossil fuels has led to changes in the climate environment, in which the deterioration of air quality has affected people’s daily lives. This paper introduces the green growth level as a control variable to explore the connection between carbon dioxide emissions and the level of economic growth. It uses the EKC algorithm and VEC model to analyze Nanjing city’s data from 1993 to 2018. Given the data availability, the ARIMA algorithm was used to project carbon emissions for 2019−2025. It is found that the EKC curve of Nanjing City shows an N-shape, and the growth of economic level will cause the enhancement of carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon emissions will reach 7,592,140 tons in 2025. At present, we are in an essential stage of transition from N-shape to inverted U-shape, and this paper makes several recommendations based on the findings.

Interrogating the Installation Gap and Potential of Solar Photovoltaic Systems Using GIS and Deep Learning
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Ballarat, deep learning, GIS, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar PV systems, sustainable development
Non-renewable-resource consumption and global greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions are critical issues that pose a significant threat to sustainable development. Solar energy is a promising source to generate renewable energy and an appealing alternative electricity source for households. The primary goal of this research is to detect the rooftops that have no solar photovoltaic (PV) system deployed on them but that receive moderate to high solar-energy radiation using the Geographic Information System (GIS) and deep-learning techniques. Although various studies have been conducted on this subject, not many addressed these two issues simultaneously at a residential level. Identifying the installed solar PV systems in a large area can be expensive and time-consuming work if performed manually. Therefore, the deep-learning algorithm is an emerging alternative method to detect objects using aerial images. Impedance Characteristics and Harmonic Analysis of LCL-Type Grid-Connected Converter Cluster
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: converter cluster, harmonic analysis, LCL-type grid-connected converter, output impedance
This study addresses the output impedance model of the LCL-type grid-connected converter considering the dead-time effects and the digital control delay. The model shows that the digital control delay will affect the accuracy of the output impedance of the grid-connected converter, and the dead-time effects are only equivalent to superimposing a disturbance voltage on the original output impedance model. The derived output impedance model is verified by comparing it with the switching model in the PSIM simulation environment. The harmonic interaction between converter cluster and utility grid is modeled and analyzed based on the output impedance model. A combined harmonic suppression strategy is incorporated into every converter control scheme to suppress the harmonic interaction. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the correctness of harmonic interaction analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed suppression strategy.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: correlation between solar and wind power plants, offshore wind power, power demand, RES
Energy transition forcing a change in the structure of the electricity generation system is a particularly difficult task in countries such as Poland, where the dominant source of energy is fossil fuels. Due to the nature of renewable sources (stochastic and seasonally variable), it is necessary to study their impact on the power system. Much research was conducted on this subject. They consider modelling power systems in terms of dealing with an increasing amount of renewable energy sources, stabilization of electricity generation or environmental aspects. This article examines one of the key sources of future power systems—offshore wind turbines (OWT). The influence of offshore wind sources on the power system in the fields of stability of generation, methods of regulatory strategies, and economics were examined. One of the aspects that are less considered is the correlation of energy production in OWT with energy demand and with generation in other renewable energy sources, especial... [more]

Hydrothermal Conversion of Waste Biomass from Greenhouses into Hydrochar for Energy, Soil Amendment, and Wastewater Treatment Applications
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Adsorption, characterization, hydrothermal carbonization, leached nutrient water treatment, soil remediation, tomato plant biomass
Solid hydrochar (HC) produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of tomato plant biomass from a greenhouse (GH) was assessed for different inhouse applications, including fuel, seed germination, and leached GH nutrient feed (GNF) wastewater treatment. Completed experiments showed encouraging results. HC was revealed to be an efficient renewable fuel, having peat-like characteristics with high heating value of about 26.0 MJ/kg and very low clinker forming potential. This would allow the use of HC as fuel for GH heating as a substitute to costly natural gas, or it could be commercialized after pelletizing. Experiments with soil application showed substantial potential for the produced HC in better seed germination of tomato plants. Another benefit from use of the produced HC is as a soil additive, which would also contribute to environmental emission reduction. Results suggest that the generated HC can remove about 6−30% of nutrients from leached-GNF wastewater. This would be an essenti... [more]

Does the Responsibility System for Environmental Protection Targets Enhance Corporate High-Quality Development in China?
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: corporate high-quality development, difference-in-differences method, energy-intensive firms, environmental regulations, responsibility system for environmental protection targets
In 2017, China made an ambitious statement of high-quality development (HQD) with which to realize the goals of sustainability proposed by the United Nations. Our paper sheds new light on how the corporate high-quality development is affected by the responsibility system for environmental protection targets using a sample of energy-intensive firms from 2003 to 2018. We calculate the indexes for corporate high-quality development using entropy weighting for the five dimensions: efficiency, innovation, openness, greenness, and social responsibility. Then, we develop a difference-in-differences model to reveal that the responsibility system for environmental protection targets significantly dampens high-quality development of corporations, as the estimated coefficient is −0.0420 with a t-statistic of −2.9384. In contrast with private firms, the high-quality development of state-owned firms shows no significant correlation with environmental policy constraints. The efficiency of capital al... [more]

Keywords: annular gas leak, sustained casing pressure, well integrity testing
The pressure bleed-down/build-up (B/B) testing is enforced by the Bureau of Safty and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) regulations in the US for gas-leaking wells with recurrent casing head annular pressure dubbed “Sustained Casing Pressure” (SCP). The bleed down test involves bleeding the pressure with a needle valve. Once the pressure reached to zero or stabilized, the valve is closedand a 24-h pressure monitoring starts. Analysis of the tests mandated by regulations involves merely a qualitative assessment of the low or high level of environmental risk measured by leak size. A quantitative analysis—based on mathematical models—has been already proposed and used for sizing cement leaks but the models give ambiguous results due to oversimplifying assumptions of the cement leak system and disregard for the testing procedure. Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, open cooling, thermal energy, water level
In Poland, coal-based thermal energy for cooling power plant installations uses a large amount of surface water. Historically, there have been cases of limitations in electricity supply due to low water levels and high temperature of water in rivers. Moreover, environmental requirements limit the possibility of using water resources for cooling purposes, pointing to the necessity to leave inviolable flows in rivers. This raises questions about the future of the operation of thermal power plants with open cooling systems and hence the research undertaken by the authors. The research consisted of a questionnaire survey, hydrological analyses, the impact assessment of climate change on the operation of power plants, and a discussion of technical solutions for water abstraction and power loss analysis in a particular power plant. The results indicate that there are power plants that are more sensitive to hydrological and environmental conditions and the temperature of the water required fo... [more]
