A Comparison of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Methods for Sustainability Assessment of District Heating Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: DEA, district heating, ELECTRE, multi-criteria decision analysis, PROMETHEE, sensitivity analysis of weight, sustainability assessment, TOPSIS, WSM
The sustainability of energy systems is increasingly assessed for development of more resilient, greener district heating (DH) systems. That requires compiling technological, environmental, and economic indicators in a social, political, and institutional context. This work investigates DH system sustainability analysis by five frequently applied multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods—WSM, TOPSIS, PROMETHEE, ELECTRE and DEA. To compare the sustainability assessment results, a selection of 8 criteria describing 12 DH companies (DHC) was examined. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the most credible MCDA method. Criteria weights were changed: (1) individually for evaluation of the range of stability for alternatives (score of DHC performance); (2) individually by a fixed value to compare how each criterion weight change affected the average score of a result; and (3) to compare the AHP weighting method to an equal weight scenario. The results of sensitivity analysis... [more]

Indoor Summer Thermal Comfort in a Changing Climate: The Case of a Nearly Zero Energy House in Wallonia (Belgium)
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, nearly Zero Energy Buildings, overheating, summer thermal comfort
While the potential impact of climate change mitigation measures is well documented in building sciences literature, there are only relatively sparse studies focusing on the efficiency of adaptation strategies. This paper aims to contribute to this topic by evaluating the extent to which the design of a typical nearly Zero Energy Buildling (nZEB) house in Wallonia (Belgium), and its current operation, could provide summer thermal comfort in a changing climate. Based on calibrated whole building energy simulations, and on the integration of future climate data directly derived from a high-resolution climate model, this study evaluates the potential evolution of overheating risks in the living room and in the main bedroom of the house. Discussing the compliance with existing overheating criteria, the study shows that the passive strategies currently deployed in the house might not be sufficient to guarantee summer thermal comfort especially in the bedroom, and that other strategies might... Environmental Impact Assessment and Classification of 48 V Plug-in Hybrids with Real-Driving Use Case Simulations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 48 V, battery sizing, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), Life Cycle Analysis, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), real-driving simulation
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are commonly operated with high-voltage (HV) components due to their higher power availability compared to 48 V-systems. On the contrary, HV-powertrain components are more expensive and require additional safety measures. Additionally, the HV system can only be repaired and maintained with special equipment and protective gear, which is not available in all workshops. PHEVs based on a 48 V-system level can offer a reasonable compromise between the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-saving potential and cost-effectiveness in small- and medium-sized electrified vehicles. In our study, the lifecycle emissions of the proposed 48 V PHEV system were compared to a conventional vehicle, 48 V HEV, and HV PHEV for individual driving use cases. To ensure a holistic evaluation, the analysis was based on measured real-driving cycles including Global Position System (GPS) map-matched slope profiles for a parallel hybrid. Optimal PHEV battery capacities were derive... [more]

On-Road and Laboratory Emissions from Three Gasoline Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles—Part 1: Regulated and Unregulated Gaseous Pollutants and Greenhouse Gases
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: greenhouse gas emissions, plug-in hybrid vehicles, pollutants emissions, transport sector, unregulated pollutants
Road transport is a relevant source of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to meet the European decarbonisation targets, the share of electrified vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), is rapidly growing, becoming the second most popular powertrain in the European market. PHEVs are of interest since they are expected to deliver a reduction in gaseous pollutants such as NOx as well as in greenhouse gases such as CO2. Herein, we explored both categories of emissions for three PHEVs with gasoline direct-injection engines, meeting the latest European emission standards (Euro 6d and Euro 6d-TEMP). They were studied in laboratory and on the road, in different modalities and temperatures. All tested vehicles met the Euro 6 emission limits in the Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) and the real driving emissions (RDE) test procedure. Still, when their internal combustion engine ignited even for a few km, their emiss... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: microwave power transmission, retrodirective, wireless power transfer
In this paper, we propose novel retrodirective systems to improve the efficiency and safety of microwave power transmission (MPT) systems in multipath environments. The retrodirective system consists of an array antenna with phased conjugation circuits and it sends back the phase-conjugate signal toward the pilot signal transmitted from the receiver. It is usually applied for one receiver MPT system, however, Ossia corp. develops the new retrodirective system in multipath environments named ‘Cota’. We simulated the detail of the Cota system, e.g., one receiver in multipath circumstance, one receiver with obstacle in the multipath circumstance, and multi receiver. Furthermore, we revised the retrodirective system with phase information as well as the amplitude information of the pilot signal to improve the MPT efficiency. We also find effect of the MPT efficiency by phase difference between two pilot signal sources. At last, we carried out the experiments of the retrodirective system in... [more]

Tools for Network Smart City Management—The Case Study of Potential Possibility of Managing Energy and Associated Emissions in Metropolitan Areas
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 4T potentials, decarbonisation, emissions, Energy Efficiency, metropolitan regions, network management, smart city
The article uses the case study of a polycentric metropolitan area as a starting point for a debate about the available tools for managing the network aspects of intelligent cities. We show that the construction of talents, the development of knowledge among officials and inhabitants, and technological tools such as Hubgrade (which allows for heat delivery process control, supervision, inspection, and results in emission reduction) are prerequisites for the sustainable development of cities. It is critical to understand that technological solutions are insufficient to accomplish such a task. Relevant stakeholders need to consciously take advantage of technological tools and build and utilise 4T potential and the self-learning capabilities of the organisations. An inherent feature of an organisation, such as a city, is cooperation between the people who build it. The main challenges of cities includes the reduction of pollutants resulting from the use of transport, heat sources, or ener... [more]

How the Use of Biomass for Green Energy and Waste Incineration Practice Will Affect GDP Growth in the Less Developed Countries of the EU (A Case Study with Visegrad and Balkan Countries)
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Balkan countries, CO2 emission, combustible energy, Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), GDP growth, Visegrad nations, waste for energy
Combustible renewable energy can be an effective instrument to confirm sustainable development in reducing CO2 emissions to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in developing countries. However, connecting to some developing regions, the main research question is to what extent, in EU post-communist fast-developing countries (Visegrad Countries/Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland), will meeting the climate change preferences affect the use of biomass for energy and waste incineration, and how will this affect GDP growth? In addition, of course, what the Balkan countries can learn from this is also very important. The study investigates the relationship between GDP per capita, CO2 emissions, and Combustible Energy and Waste Consumption (CEWC). According to the Hausman test, the regression model along with random effect is the appropriate method for panel-balanced data as of 2008 to 2020 concerning Balkan countries. Energy System Development Scenarios: Case of Poland
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: development scenarios, distributed energy, energy system business model, Poland
Europe’s ambition to be the first climate-neutral continent and to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will result in changes to the energy systems of many countries. This overlaps with the principles of circular economy, energy independence, and the continuity of operations enshrined in many national and regional documents. From the above, a scenario based on renewable resources emerges. However, in a country such as Poland, with conventional energy sources and large state participation in the sector, is this feasible? The authors assumed that the urgent need for a turbulence-sensitive analysis of energy sector changes can be met by using a new view, defined by the authors as a matrix of four oceans scenarios. Black, Grey, Red and Green scenarios are determined by the proportion of the state and the local-community sector. Then, assuming the possibility of introducing two of them by 2050—Green (radical) and Red (competitive)—empirical research was carried out on a purpos... [more]

Sieving and Covering of Wood Chips Improves Storability
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dry matter loss, forest fuel, fuel quality, moisture content
Minimising dry matter losses during storage of comminuted forest fuels is desirable from both an economic and a sustainability perspective. This study examined fuel quality and amount of recovered energy during the storage of forest wood chips stored at full industrial scale at three locations, and the effect of sieving and covering piles with a water-resistant, vapour-permeable fabric. Sieving wood chips before storage, that is, reducing the number of fines smaller than 8 mm, reduced the cumulative dry matter losses to <2%, while cumulative dry matter losses after storage for 4−6 months using current practices, that is, unsieved and uncovered, reached 10.6%. The combined effect of storage management led to a value loss of 11.5%, while both covering and sieving led to lower losses, with the combination of sieving and covering giving a 1.3% value increase, and thus, increased storability.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Chang 7, lacustrine shale, Late Triassic, organic matter enrichment, southern margin of Ordos Basin
Shale oil is an unconventional oil resource that needs to be developed and utilized urgently. However, the Chang 7 shale in the Ordos Basin, as the most typical continental source rock in China, is limited by the study of organic matter (OM) enrichment factors in continental lacustrine facies, and there are still controversies about the controlling factors, which limit the progress of oil and gas exploration. This paper aims to reconstruct the paleoenvironment of Chang 7 shale in the southern margin of Ordos Basin and reveal the controlling factors of organic rich shale by organic and elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thin section observation, and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analysis. Tracing and Evaluating Life-Cycle Carbon Emissions of Urban Multi-Energy Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon flow, energy hub, life-cycle carbon emissions, urban multi-energy systems
With the acceleration of urbanization, urban multi-energy systems (UMESs) generate more and more carbon emissions, causing severe environmental issues. The carbon generated by UMESs includes not only emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels for electricity generation during operation phases, but also those from the transportation, extraction, and recycling of materials during construction phases. Meanwhile, as carbon emissions are delivered with the energy flow among devices in the UMES, they are distributed differently across devices. Under this background, analyzing the carbon emissions of UMESs considering different life-cycle phases (i.e., operation and construction) and carbon flow characteristics is essential for carbon reduction and environmental protection. Considering that, a novel framework for tracing and evaluating life-cycle carbon emissions of UMESs is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the carbon emission models of different devices in UMESs, including energy sources... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomethane, circular economy, emission reduction, gas cleaning and upgrading
In line with the low-carbon strategy, the EU is expected to be climate-neutral by 2050, which would require a significant increase in renewable energy production. Produced biogas is directly used to produce electricity and heat, or it can be upgraded to reach the “renewable natural gas”, i.e., biomethane. This paper reviews the applied production technology and current state of biogas and biomethane production in Europe. Germany, UK, Italy and France are the leaders in biogas production in Europe. Biogas from AD processes is most represented in total biogas production (84%). Germany is deserving for the majority (52%) of AD biogas in the EU, while landfill gas production is well represented in the UK (43%). Biogas from sewage sludge is poorly presented by less than 5% in total biogas quantities produced in the EU. Biomethane facilities will reach a production of 32 TWh in 2020 in Europe. There are currently 18 countries producing biomethane (Germany and France with highest share). Most... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas plant, digestate, large-scale installation, microalgae, photobioreactor
Microalgae-based technologies have huge potential for application in the environment sector and the bio-energy industry. However, their cost-efficiency has to be improved by drawing on design and operation data for large-scale installations. This paper presents a technical concept of an installation for large-scale microalgae culture on digestate liquor, and the results of a pilot-scale study to test its performance. The quality of non-treated digestate has been shown to be insufficient for direct use as a growth medium due to excess suspended solids, turbidity, and organic matter content, which need to be reduced. To that end, this paper proposes a system based on mechanical separation, flotation, and pre-treatment on a biofilter. The culture medium fed into photobioreactors had the following parameters after the processing: COD—340 mgO2/dm3, BOD5—100 mgO2/dm3, TN—900 mg/dm3, and TP—70 mg/dm3. Keywords: attention mechanism, causal convolutional network, singular spectrum analysis, wind energy, wind speed forecasting
As one of the effective renewable energy sources, wind energy has received attention because it is sustainable energy. Accurate wind speed forecasting can pave the way to the goal of sustainable development. However, current methods ignore the temporal characteristics of wind speed, which leads to inaccurate forecasting results. In this paper, we propose a novel SSA-CCN-ATT model to forecast the wind speed. Specifically, singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is first applied to decompose the original wind speed into several sub-signals. Secondly, we build a new deep learning CNN-ATT model that combines causal convolutional network (CNN) and attention mechanism (ATT). The causal convolutional network is used to extract the information in the wind speed time series. After that, the attention mechanism is employed to focus on the important information. Finally, a fully connected neural network layer is employed to get wind speed forecasting results. Three experiments on four datasets show that... [more]
