Global Warming Potential of Biomass-to-Ethanol: Review and Sensitivity Analysis through a Case Study
Rui Pacheco, Carla Silva
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dynamic LCA, electricity mix, factory lifetime, impact category method, life cycle assessment, time horizon
In Europe, ethanol is blended with gasoline fuel in 5 or 10% volume (E5 or E10). In USA the blend is 15% in volume (E15) and there are also pumps that provide E85. In Brazil, the conventional gasoline is E27 and there are pumps that offer E100, due to the growing market of flex fuel vehicles. Bioethanol production is usually by means of biological conversion of several biomass feedstocks (first generation sugar cane in Brazil, corn in the USA, sugar beet in Europe, or second-generation bagasse of sugarcane or lignocellulosic materials from crop wastes). The environmental sustainability of the bioethanol is usually measured by the global warming potential metric (GWP in CO2eq), 100 years time horizon. Reviewed values could range from 0.31 to 5.55 gCO2eq/LETOH. A biomass-to-ethanol industrial scenario was used to evaluate the impact of methodological choices on CO2eq: conventional versus dynamic Life Cycle Assessment; different impact assessment methods (TRACI, IPCC, ILCD, IMPACT, EDIP,... Keywords: environmental impact, photovoltaic farms, Romanian Plain, solar energy
Under the European Union (EU) energy efficiency targets that Romania has assumed, increasing the share of solar energy has been one of the main points to be considered. The most important solar energy resources are found in the lowlands and low hills in southern and south-eastern parts of the country. The current paper is focused on the Romanian Plain, which has the best environmental conditions to support the development of photovoltaic (PV) farms. One hundred and ten PV farms have been identified and mapped which cover a total area of 1393 hectares. Although it provides a clean and sustainable energy source, the related environmental implications of PV farms could be either positive or negative. In this study, some of the main categories of impacts have been selected for identification and analysis of their environmental consequences. Several indicators have been computed: the share of PV farms from the main land use/cover categories and main soil types, and the distance of PV farms... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: building renovation, electricity production, greenhouse gasses, life cycle assessment, life cycle costs, nuclear waste
The aim of this study is to assess how different renovation scenarios affect the environmental and economic impacts of a multi-dwelling building in a Nordic climate, how these aspects are correlated and how different energy carriers affect different environmental impact categories. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union has set an agenda in order to reduce energy use in buildings. New buildings on the European market have a low replacement rate, which makes building renovation an important factor for achieving the European Union goals. In this study, eight renovation strategies were analyzed following the European Committee for Standardization standards for life cycle assessment and life cycle costs of buildings. This study covers all life cycle steps from cradle to grave. The renovation scenarios include combinations of photovoltaics, geothermal heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation and improved building envelopes. Results show that, depending on the energy ca... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: distributed parameter circuit model, electric heat tracing, generalized predictive control, skin effect, temperature distribution model
In order to ensure deep-water flowline safety, this paper combined the axial temperature distribution model of the submarine pipeline and the distributed parameter circuit model of the skin effect electric heat tracing system; such work is conducive to proving that the heating effect of the skin effect electric heat tracing system depends on the distributed circuit parameters and power frequency of the system. Due to the complexity of the power supply device, the frequency cannot be increased indefinitely. Therefore, for the case that the input of the skin electric heat tracing system is constrained, a generalized predictive control algorithm introducing the input softening factor is proposed, and the constrained generalized predictive control strategy is applied to the electric heating temperature control system of the submarine oil pipeline. Simulation results demonstrated that the control quantity of the skin effect electric heat tracing system is effectively controlled within a con... [more]

Keywords: energy storage ageing and degradation, Li-Sulfur batteries, life cycle assessment, second-life energy storage applications
The development of Li-ion batteries has enabled the re-entry of electric vehicles into the market. As car manufacturers strive to reach higher practical specific energies (550 Wh/kg) than what is achievable for Li-ion batteries, new alternatives for battery chemistry are being considered. Li-Sulfur batteries are of interest due to their ability to achieve the desired practical specific energy. The research presented in this paper focuses on the development of the Li-Sulfur technology for use in electric vehicles. The paper presents the methodology and results for endurance tests conducted on in-house manufactured Li-S cells under various accelerated ageing conditions. The Li-S cells were found to reach 80% state of health after 300−500 cycles. The results of these tests were used as the basis for discussing the second life options for Li-S batteries, as well as environmental Life Cycle Assessment results of a 50 kWh Li-S battery.

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: greenhouse, heat environment, numerical simulation, roof sprinkler, temperature decrease
Decreasing the temperature of a greenhouse in summer is very important for the growth of plants. To investigate the effects of a roof sprinkler on the heat environment of a greenhouse, a three-dimensional symmetrical model was built, in which a k-ε (k-epsilon) turbulent model, a DO (Discrete Ordinates) irrational model, a Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm, and a multiphase model were used to simulate the effects of the roof sprinkler, at different flow rates. Based on the simulation results, it was found that the temperature could be further reduced under a proper sprinkle rate, and the temperature distribution in the film on the roof was more uniform. A test was conducted to verify the accuracy of the model, which proved the validity of the numerical results. The simulation results of this study will be helpful for controlling and optimizing the heat environment of a greenhouse.

Combined heat and power production from biogas is now playing an important role in energy and resource utilization as well as pollution control in waste water treatment. This research used biogas from the Bali Sewage Treatment Plant in New Taipei City, Taiwan, as a major source of fuel for the electricity generation. A micro gas turbine electricity generator, Capstone CR-30, which possesses a maximum rated power load (PWL) of 30 kW, was equipped to convert biogas into electricity. The biogas is mainly composed of CH4 (56.1 ± 8.0 vol.%), CO2 (25.5 ± 9.8 vol.%), H2 (0.5 vol.%), and H2S (0.99 ± 0.07 ppmv). During the test operation period of the generator, it was found that the thermal efficiency increases from 19.8% to 23.4% kWhe/kWhth, while the electricity generation efficiency (ηEB) also rises from 0.93 to 1.09 kWhe/m3 biogas as the PWL increases from 10 kW to 30 kW. The results indicated that the generator has a better performance with higher PWL. At PWL = 30 kW, the average adjusted... [more]
Do Carbon Emissions and Economic Growth Decouple in China? An Empirical Analysis Based on Provincial Panel Data
Yu Hao, Zirui Huang, Haitao Wu
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decoupling theory, differential GMM estimation, environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), panel data, Tapio decoupling model
Global warming has emerged as a serious threat to humans and sustainable development. China is under increasing pressure to curb its carbon emissions as the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide. By combining the Tapio decoupling model and the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) framework, this paper explores the relationship between China’s carbon emissions and economic growth. Based on panel data of 29 provinces from 2007 to 2016, this paper quantitatively estimates the nexus of carbon emissions and economic development for the whole nation and the decoupling status of individual provinces. There is empirical evidence for the conventional EKC hypothesis, showing that the relationship between carbon emissions and per capita gross domestic product (GDP) is an inverted U shape and that the inflection point will not be attained soon. Moreover, following the estimation results of the Tapio decoupling model, there were significant differences between individual provinces in decoupling st... [more]

Electric vehicles (EVs) can play an important role in improving the European Union’s (EU)’s energy supply security, reducing the environmental impact of transport, and increasing EU competitiveness. The EU aims at fostering the synchronised deployment of EVs and necessary recharging infrastructure. There is currently a lack of studies in the literature for analysing the societal impacts of EV and infrastructure deployment at continental scale. In our paper, we analyse the likely impact of related plans of the EU member states (MSs). With the help of qualitative and quantitative analyses, we study the impact of plans on recharging infrastructure deployment, contributions to the EU climate and energy goals, air quality objectives, and reinforcement of the EU’s competitiveness and job creation. We soft-link a fleet impact model with a simplified source receptor relationship model, and propose a new model to calculate job impacts. The results overall show modest impacts by 2020, as most me... [more]

Leidong Yuan, Cheng Xu
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: AHP, LCA, low-rank coal upgrading, power generation, solar energy
In China, the electricity load is concentrated in the east, but low-rank coal resources are concentrated in the west. To solve this contradiction, in this study, three cases for energy transmission about power system with and without solar energy were studied by life cycle assessment (LCA). Case 1 directly combusts low-rank coal to generate electricity in western China and transmits it to eastern China by grid. Cases 2 and 3 upgrade low-rank coal and transport it to eastern China for power generation. With the evaluating indicators and various stages of LCA, the impact of each case on the environment was compared clearly. The results show that over 90% of the pollutant emission comes from coal combustion throughout the life cycle. The pollutant emission of upgraded coal transportation is less than 5%. With low-rank coal upgrading then combusting, the total emission is less than that of direct combustion. In particular, with solar energy added, the emission of combustion can be further... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, enhanced oil/gas recovery, gas injection, shale condensate reservoir, shale gas reservoir, shale oil reservoir
Shale oil and gas resources contribute significantly to the energy production in the U.S. Greenhouse gas emissions come from combustion of fossil fuels from potential sources of power plants, oil refineries, and flaring or venting of produced gas (primarily methane) in oilfields. Economic utilization of greenhouse gases in shale reservoirs not only increases oil or gas recovery, but also contributes to CO2 sequestration. In this paper, the feasibility and efficiency of gas injection approaches, including huff-n-puff injection and gas flooding in shale oil/gas/condensate reservoirs are discussed based on the results of in-situ pilots, and experimental and simulation studies. In each section, one type of shale reservoir is discussed, with the following aspects covered: (1) Experimental and simulation results for different gas injection approaches; (2) mechanisms of different gas injection approaches; and (3) field pilots for gas injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and enhanced gas reco... Subject: Environment
Keywords: freeze recovery, heat tracing, impedance melting, molten salt, parabolic trough collector
Parabolic trough collector (PTC) technology is currently the most mature solar technology, which has led to the accumulation of relevant operational experience. The overall performance and efficiency of these plants depends on several components, and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is one of the most important ones. Using molten salts as HTFs has the advantage of being able to work at higher temperatures, but it also has the disadvantage of the potential freezing of the HTF in pipes and components. This paper models and evaluates two methods of freeze recovery, which is needed for this HTF system design: Heat tracing in pipes and components, and impedance melting in the solar field. The model is used to compare the parasitic consumption in three molten salts mixtures, namely Solar Salt, HiTec, and HiTec XL, and the feasibility of this system in a freezing event. After the investigation of each of these subsystems, it was concluded that freeze recovery for a molten salt plant is possible.

Keywords: energy budget, heat mitigation, in-situ validation, land cover ratio, sensible heat flux, spatial typification by heat flux, Sustainability, thermal environment improvement
Urban heat island effects (UHIE) are becoming increasingly widespread, thus, there is an urgent need to address thermal comfort, which significantly influences the daily lives of people. In this study, a means of improving the thermal environment by spatial analysis of heat was implemented to ensure basic thermal comfort in future smart cities. Using Seoul as the study site, the relationship between sensible heat and land cover type was used to identify heat islands in this city. Thereafter, k-means clustering was employed to extract unfavourable and favourable thermal areas. High sensible heat indicates locations where environmental heat needs to be mitigated. Sensible heat distribution data were used for spatial typification to formulate an effective land cover factor to mitigate the UHIE. In-situ net radiation data measured at six sites were utilised to confirm the spatial typification of the thermal environment. It was found that expanding the green space by 1% reduces the sensible... [more]

Keywords: cassava peels, flow assurance, gas hydrates, high pressure micro-DS, induction time, kinetic inhibitor
The oil and gas industry faces numerous problems, from the exploration to the production phase. One of the most common problems faced by the industry is the formation of gas hydrates in the pipeline during the deep-water operation. The advancement of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) has been rapid. However, as the natural degradation of conventional KHIs, such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyvinylcaprolactam (PVCap), is challenging, there is a need to develop environmental-friendly KHIs with enhanced biodegradability to improve possible environmental risks. Thus, green inhibitors have been developed as a new class of KHIs. Research for enhancement of green hydrate inhibitors, as an alternative for existing low dosage hydrate inhibitors (LDHIs), has increased. In this paper, the effect of induction time with presence of cassava peels on the formation of methane hydrate was studied and compared with commercialized inhibitor, PVP. The performance of cassava peels as a kinetic hydra... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: commercial building energy, demand forecast, energy model
With the Paris Agreement entering into full force, South Korea must submit its target greenhouse gas emissions for commercial buildings by 2030 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. To determine this target, the annual energy demands must be forecasted through appropriate models; the development of these models is the focus of our study. We developed a system to calculate energy demand forecasts by searching for suitable methods. We built distinct energy forecast models for petroleum, city gas, electricity, heat, and renewable energies. The results show that the most appropriate variable for the petroleum energy model is energy trend. Moreover, the annual increase rate of petroleum energy demand from 2019 to 2030 was forecasted to be −1.7%. The appropriate variable for city gas energy model was the floor area of commercial buildings, which was forecasted to increase at an annual average growth rate of 0.4% from 2019 to 2030. According to the forecast results of... [more]

Pollution-induced flashover is a serious threat to the safe operation of power systems. With the development of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), it is necessary to study insulator contamination in DC electric fields. In this paper, the energized wind tunnel contamination test was conducted in order to systematically study the pollution ratio, k (ratio of non-soluble deposit density (NSDD) of a DC-energized condition to a non-energized condition), under different environmental parameters. Later, a two-dimensional contamination model of short samples of an HVDC composite insulator was established. The particle motion characteristics under different environmental parameters were then analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The research results showed that—the DC electric field had an influence on particle motion but in different environments, the degree of influence was different. In addition, k was found to largely vary, with a variation in the environmental parameters. When the... [more]
The Effects of Environmental Regulations on the Manufacturing Industry’s Performance: A Comparison of Green and Non-Green Sectors in Korea

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: act on low-carbon green growth, employment, environmental regulations, Korea, labor productivity, manufacturing
This study examines the effects of strengthened environmental regulations on employment and labor productivity in the Korean manufacturing industry using panel data from 2004 to 2015. It divides the industry into environmental (green and non-green) and carbon dioxide emitting (polluting and non-polluting) sectors to investigate the industrial sector’s response heterogeneity to tightened regulations. We draw several conclusions on the basis of our empirical results. Firstly, environmental policies measured by enacting the LCGG (Low-carbon green growth) Act led to negative effects on labor productivity and employment in polluting industries. These negative effects show that the polluting industries take a higher cost burden because of the environmental policies as compared to the less-polluting industries; this finding is in line with previous studies in literature. Secondly, the green sector is experiencing higher labor productivity and employment as compared to the non-green sector aft... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: finite element analysis, high-voltage, stray capacitance, voltage divider
This work analyzes the effects of the parasitic or stray distributed capacitance to ground in high-voltage environments and assesses the effectiveness of different corrective actions to minimize such effects. To this end, the stray capacitance of a 130 kV RMS high-voltage resistive divider is studied because it can severely influence the behavior of such devices when operating under alternating current or transient conditions. The stray capacitance is calculated by means of three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. Different laboratory experiments under direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) supply are conducted to corroborate the theoretical findings, and different possibilities to mitigate stray capacitance effects are analyzed and discussed. The effects of the capacitance are important in applications, such as large electrical machines including transformers, motors, and generators or in high-voltage applications involving voltage dividers, conductors or... Keywords: electrical capacity, energy intensity, GDP, gross domestic product, hierarchical cluster analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development
Climate change and awareness of the need to care for the environment have resulted in a global increase in the interest in renewable energy sources. The European Union (EU) is active in this respect and requires Member States to fulfill specific plans in the transformation of their energy systems. We employed hierarchical cluster analysis in an attempt to distinguish those countries among the new EU Member States that increased their electrical capacity from renewable energy sources to the greatest extent while paying attention to their energy intensity. The analyses were conducted in two scenarios for both 2004 and 2016. The first scenario assumed an analysis of all known renewable energy sources, whereas in the second scenario, only renewable energy sources from wind and solar power plants were included. The division of analyses into these two variants showed the importance of the differences in the energy assessment of individual countries, depending on classification of renewable e... [more]

Keywords: combine harvester reel, life cycle assessment, pod strength, seed loss, winter oilseed rape
Shattering of pods of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is a major cause of seed yield losses prior to and during harvesting. In order to reduce shattering, researchers have been engaged in the development of special preparations that are known as pod sealants (PS). Despite the fact that there are already developed and commercialized PSs that have only been effective on seed yield preservation under certain environmental conditions, there is still a need to create a more versatile and efficient PS. Currently, the most promising method of controlling pod shattering in oilseed rape is the application of our developed novel acrylic- and trisiloxane-based pod sealant (PS4). The effectiveness of PS4 and three commercial pod sealants (PS1, PS2, and PS3) was assessed in this comparative study. By spraying an oilseed rape crop with PS4, natural seed loss can be reduced by 20−70%, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, and loss of seeds during harvest can be reduced by more than three-f... Keywords: Ethanol, final energy, new bus technology, NH3, NOx, PM2.5
In Europe, diesel combustion is being banned due to the NOx and PM2.5 emissions impact on air quality. The bus sector is being electrified and is increasing its use of alternative fuels, such as natural gas (in spark ignition engines) and bioethanol (in compression ignition engines), to reduce such harmful emissions. Even if a diesel bus is equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR), its NOx emissions are reduced its but produces more NH3 emissions that are PM2.5 precursors. In developing countries, the air quality is still barely monitored, however, the air quality issue is well known and is being addressed. Moreover, the Ecuadorian sugar cane industry is seeking ways to increase its ethanol production. This is the ideal framework to explore a new technology and energy source in developing economies such as Ecuador. This paper explores the impact of the Ecuadorian diesel bus fleet conversion to hybrid compression ignition ethanol (HEV-ED95), hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid fle... [more]

The design of an efficient energy management system (EMS) for monopolar DC networks with high penetration of photovoltaic generation plants is addressed in this research through a convex optimization point of view. The EMS is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem that involves economic, technical, and environmental objective functions subject to typical constraints regarding power balance equilibrium, thermal conductor capabilities, generation source capacities, and voltage regulation constraints, among others, using a nonlinear programming (NLP) model. The main characteristic of this NLP formulation of the EMS for PV plants is that it is a nonconvex optimization problem owing to the product of variables in the power balance constraint. To ensure an effective solution to this NLP problem, a linear approximation of the power balance constraints using the McCormick equivalent for the product of two variables is proposed. In addition, to eliminate the error introduced by th... [more]
