Theoretical Hydrokinetic Power Potential Assessment of the U-Tapao River Basin Using GIS
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: geographic information system, riverine hydrokinetic, small hydropower, soil and water assessment tool
Conventional hydropower technologies such as dams have been criticized due to their negative environmental effects which have necessitated the development of new technologies for sustainable development of hydropower energy. Hydrokinetic (HK) energy is one such emerging renewable energy technology and, in this study, a theoretical potential assessment was done using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model, for the U-Tapao river basin (URB), a major tributary of the Songkhla lake basin (SLB) in southern Thailand. The SWAT was calibrated and validated with SWAT calibration and uncertainty (SWAT-CUP)-SUFI 2 programs using the observed discharge data from the gauging stations within the watershed. The model performance was evaluated based on the Nash−Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2) values, achieving 0.62 and 0.60, respectively, for calibration, and 0.65 and 0.68 for validation which is considere... Energy Implications of Lot Sizing Decisions in Refrigerated Warehouses
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cold chain, economic order quantity, inventory management, refrigerated warehouse
Cold supply chains (CSCs) are responsible for preserving the quality of perishable goods in storage and transport. They consume significant amounts of energy to maintain cooling temperatures constant over time continuously and ubiquitously, which is affected by the surrounding environment and the users’ behavior. The storage filling level is one specific feature of refrigerated warehouses observed in practice: they are more energy efficient when kept full of items, reducing the space that air occupies. Inventory management models that consider energy consumption have received increasing attention recently due to an increase in stakeholders’ awareness of sustainability. Despite this interest, there is no work that jointly considers the effects of the filling level and the temperature inside the warehouse. This study, therefore, integrates those aspects into the economic order quantity model and finds the optimal lot size quantity that minimizes the total system cost, which is the perfor... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, intervention, occupant behaviour, persuasion, pro-environmental behaviour change, socio-economic profile, survey, workplace
Occupants of tertiary environments rarely care about their energy consumption. This fact is even more accentuated in cases of buildings of public use. Such unawareness has been identified by many scholars as one of the main untapped opportunities with high energy saving potential in terms of cost-effectiveness. Towards that direction, there have been numerous studies exploring energy-related behaviour and the impact that our daily actions have on energy efficiency, demand response and flexibility of power systems. Nevertheless, there are still certain aspects that remain controversial and unidentified, especially in terms of socio-economic characteristics of the occupants with regards to bespoke tailored motivational and awareness-based campaigns. The presented work introduces a two-step survey, publicly available through Zenodo repository that covers social, economic, behavioural and demographic factors. The survey analysis aims to fully depict the drivers that affect occupant energy-... [more]

Factorial Decomposition of the Energy Footprint of the Shaoxing Textile Industry
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decoupling, energy footprint, logarithmic mean Divisia index, Shaoxing, textile industry
To present great environmental pressure from energy consumption during textile production, this paper calculates the energy footprint (EFP) of Shaoxing’s textile industry, from 2005 to 2018. Moreover, this study analyzes the relationship between Shaoxing’s textile industry energy consumption and economic development by using decoupling theory. Furthermore, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index decomposition method was employed to investigate the main factors that affect the EFP of Shaoxing’s textile industry. Research results show the following: (1) The growth rate of the total output value of Shaoxing’s textile industry was greater than the growth rate of the EFP, from 2005 to 2007. Thus, the decoupling state showed a weak decoupling, and EFP intensity decreased. (2) The EFP and economic growth were mainly based on the strong decoupling of Shaoxing’s textile industry from 2008 to 2015 (except for 2011), and EFP intensity declined further. (3) Economic recession in the textile industry wa... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic evaluation, Energy Efficiency, environmental impact, HOMER Pro software, on-grid system, solar energy, wind energy
The electrical sector in the Caribbean region of Colombia is currently facing problems that affect its reliability. Many thermo-electric plants are required to fill the gap and ensure energy supply. This paper thus proposes a hybrid renewable energy generation plant that could supply a percentage of the total energy demand and reduce the environmental impact of conventional energy generation. The hybrid plant works with a photovoltaic (PV) system and wind turbine systems, connected in parallel with the grid to supply a renewable fraction of the total energy demand. The investigation was conducted in three steps: the first stage determined locations where the energy system was able to take advantage of renewable sources, the second identified a location that could work more efficiently from an economic perspective, and finally, the third step estimated the number of PV solar panels and wind turbines required to guarantee optimal functioning for this location using, as a main method of c... Subject: Environment
Keywords: biocrude, exhausted CO2, oxygen ditch method, polyculture microalgae
A comparative evaluation of energy requirement and CO2 emission was performed for native polyculture microalgae oil production in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The wastewater provided nutrients for algae growth. Datasets of microalgae oil production and their details were collected from the Minamisoma pilot plant. Environmental impact estimation from direct energy and material balance was analyzed using SimaPro® v8.0.4. in two scenarios: existing and algal scenarios. In the existing scenario, CO2 emission sources were from wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, and import of crude oil. In the algal scenario, CO2 emission with microalgae production was considered using wastewater treatment, CO2 absorption from growing algae, and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) for extraction, along with the exclusion of exhausted CO2 emission for growing algae and use of discharged heat for HTL. In these two scenarios, 1 m3 of wastewater was treated, and 2.17 MJ higher heating value (HHV) output... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: capillary pressure, condenser, cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP), evaporator, heat-transfer characteristics, pressure reduce reservoir (PRR), supercritical start-up, wick
Infrared detectors on satellites and spacecraft require cooling to increase their measurement sensitivity. To efficiently cool infrared detectors in a zero gravity environment and in limited spaces, a cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP) can be used to transfer heat over a certain distance by the capillary forces generated from porous wicks without a mechanical power source. The CLHP presented in this study transfers the heat load to a condenser 0.5 m away from an evaporator at temperatures below −150 °C. The CLHP with two evaporators includes a subloop for initial start-up, and uses a pressure reduction reservoir (PRR) for the supercritical start-up from room to cryogenic temperature. Nitrogen is used as the working fluid to verify the thermal behavior of the CLHP, and the heat-transfer capacity according to the nitrogen charging pressure of the PRR is investigated. To simulate a cryogenic environment, the CLHP is installed inside a space environment simulator, including a single-stage GM... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: acidification, carbon footprint, energy footprint, harmonisation, Hydrogen, life cycle assessment
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is often used to check the environmental suitability of hydrogen energy systems, usually involving comparative studies. However, these comparative studies are typically affected by inconsistent methodological choices between the case studies under comparison. In this regard, protocols for the harmonisation of methodological choices in LCA of hydrogen are available. The step-by-step application of these protocols to a large number of case studies has already resulted in libraries of harmonised carbon, energy, and acidification footprints of hydrogen. In order to foster the applicability of these harmonisation protocols, a web-based software for the calculation of harmonised life-cycle indicators of hydrogen has recently been developed. This work addresses—for the first time—the validation of such a tool by checking the deviation between the available libraries of harmonised carbon, energy, and acidification footprints of hydrogen and the corre... New HVAC Sustainability Index—TWI (Total Water Impact)
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air-cooled condenser, evaporative, HVAC, TWI, water-cooled condenser
Sales of air conditioning are growing rapidly in buildings, more than tripling between 1990 and 2016. This energy use for air conditioning comes from a combination of rising temperatures, rising population and economic growth. Energy demand for climate control will triple by 2050, consuming more energy than that currently consumed altogether by the United States, the European Union and Japan. This increase in energy will directly impact water consumption, either to directly cool a condenser of an equipment or to serve indirectly as a basis for energy sources such as hydroelectric power that feed these heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Knowing the unique and growing importance of water, a new index, Total Water Impact (TWI) is presented, which allows a holistic comparison of the impact of water use on water, air and evaporative condensation climate systems. 200 and 500 TON (tons of refrigeration) air-cooled and water-cooled systems are theoretically compared to e... An Experimental Analysis of Soybean Straw Combustion on Both CO and NOX Emission Characteristics in a Tubular Furnace
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, energy consumption, pollutant discharge, soybean straw, tubular furnace
In this study, an experiment is conducted to explore the potential to protect both the environment and resource shortage of soybean straw, for combustion in a tubular furnace. Then, the combustion characteristics, gas emissions, and energy consumption of soybean straw are analyzed at a combustion temperature range of 773−1173 K. The results show that the total emissions of CO and NOX are the largest at a temperature of 873 K. For NOX, the emission time is significantly improved at temperatures of 973−1173 K. At high temperatures, the reaction of NOX with CO and coke reduces the total emission of NOX. The average weight loss rate at combustion temperatures of 973, 1073, and 1173 K increased by 27.38%, 61.47% and 77.97%, respectively, relative to that of 873 K. However, the energy consumption increases with the increase in combustion temperature, resulting in unnecessary waste. To get an optimal characteristic between energy utilization and pollutant discharge, a temperature range of 873... [more]

Ground Level Ozone Formation Near a Traffic Intersection: Lisbon “Rotunda De Entrecampos” Case Study
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: global radiation, low-cost sensors, nitrogen oxides, seasonal effect, weekend effect
Ground-level ozone in cities is increasing mainly due to traffic exhaust aftertreatment devices, i.e., tailpipe catalytic converters. The chemical reaction of O3 formation indicates radiation and nitrogen oxides as main players. Thus, we investigate correlations between O3, global radiation, nitrogen oxides, temperature, and precipitation in several periods of the year (2017) near a traffic roundabout in Lisbon city (coordinates 38°44’55’’ lat, −9°08’56’’ long). The weekend effect, school break versus school period, day and night, and seasonal effect were explored. Low-cost sensors (LCS) of O3, NOx, and temperature were tested to see if they can be used to get historical data on other cities and locations. The main innovation is the calibration of the sensor directly with real data (uncontrolled environment). Raw data were compared and led us to conclude that MQ-131 has a better performance than the MICS-4514 sensor. The results indicate that the diurnal cycle of ozone concentration ha... [more]

Multi-Criteria Optimisation of an Experimental Complex of Single-Family Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, NZEB, sustainable building, sustainable development
The Directive 2010/31/EU on the energy performance of buildings has introduced the standard of “nearly zero-energy buildings” (NZEBs). European requirements place the obligation to reduce energy consumption on all European Union Member States, particularly in sectors with significant energy consumption indicators. Construction is one such sector, as it is responsible for around 40% of overall energy consumption. Apart from a building’s mass and its material and installation solutions, its energy consumption is also affected by its placement relative to other buildings. A proper urban layout can also lead to a reduction in project development and occupancy costs. The goal of this article is to present a method of optimising single-family house complexes that takes elements such as direct construction costs, construction site organisation, urban layout and occupancy costs into consideration in the context of sustainability. Its authors have analysed different proposals of the placement o... [more]

Life Cycle Modelling of the Impact of Coal Quality on Emissions from Energy Generation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
This paper presents a model combining the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of fossil fuel extraction with its quality parameters and related CO2, SO2 and dust emissions at the stage of the combustion process. The model which was developed aims to identify the environmental impact of the processes of electricity production from selected energy carriers over their whole life cycle. The model takes into account the full LCA of fossil fuel extraction (of both hard and brown coal), its enrichment and fuel production as well as the environmental impact associated with emissions introduced into the air at the stage of electricity generation based on the fuels evaluated. Such an approach allows one to determine the fuel quality parameters that affect the environmental impact of energy production based on an LCA of mining and assigns the degree of environmental impact involved in particular production processes. Overall, the results obtained based on the proposed model permit the identification and... [more]

Investigation and Analysis of R463A as an Alternative Refrigerant to R404A with Lower Global Warming Potential
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy technology, environmentally friendly, R463A refrigerant, refrigeration system
This research presents the development of R463A refrigerant, a nonflammable refrigerant that was retrofitted to replace R404A. R463A is primarily composed of hydrofluorocarbons/hydrocarbons/carbon dioxide (HFCs/HCs/CO2), and has global-warming potential (GWP) of 1494. It is a nonazeotropic mixture of R32 (36%), R125 (30%), R134a (14%), R1234yf (14%), and R744 (6%). R463A is composed of polyol ester oil (POE), and it is classified as a Class A1 incombustible and nontoxic refrigerant. R463A has a higher cooling capacity (Qe) than that of R404A, as it is composed of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) R32 and carbon dioxide (CO2) R744, and has lower GWP than that of R404A due to the use of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) from R1234yf. The results of this research showed that R463A can be retrofitted to replace R404A due to its composition of POE, Class A1 incombustibility, and lower toxicity. On the Applicability of the Space Syntax Methodology for the Determination of Street Lighting Classes
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: enlightened night landscape, lighting classes determination, lighting sustainability, public street lighting, road traffic volume, space syntax analysis
Street lighting plays a crucial role in a city’s night landscape and in urban traffic management, influencing users’ comfort and safety. To contain costs of public street lighting systems and to avoid energy waste, illuminance levels on road surfaces must be adequate to fit actual traffic volumes, as prescribed by regulations. This is true not only for motorized roads but also for sidewalks, paths, and pedestrian areas. Regulations in force establish a relationship between road traffic volumes and minimum illuminance levels through the lighting classes selection procedure. Lighting classes selection is based on various para meters among which traffic volume is the most difficult to evaluate because traffic volumes are generally estimated or measured by a traffic observation campaign. In this paper, an alternative method for classes association which is based on a space syntax approach, is described. The method was applied to the case study town of Pontedera (Italy) for the analysis of... [more]

Keywords: benefit assessment, cost allocation, electricity transmission, health damages, local air pollution
Developing a regional power system to achieve a high level of integration of national systems requires sufficient development of the regional transmission grid. This is possible only with appropriate schemes for the complete cost−benefit analyses, and cost allocation of these transmission investments, which plays a critical role in the selection of the most efficient network investment and the proper assignment of their cost to the national systems. Network reinforcements affect the operation of power systems and, therefore, the externalities of power generation. This paper examines the impacts of integrating local air pollution damage from power production within the benefit assessment and cost allocation of transmission investments. In this paper, a novel combined radiation-convection floor heating system is shown. This study uses practice-based learning and investigated the thermal performance of a combined radiation-convection floor heating system with a water heat pump system by evaluating the thermal environment and energy consumption in an experimental test. A new method that analyzed the thermal performance of four different controls was developed and applied. The results of the surface temperature distributions demonstrated that Mode 1, which uses only convection, had the lowest floor temperature and was thus considered inappropriate for occupants who sleep on the floor. By contrast, Modes 2, 3, and 4 showed high floor surface temperatures as hot water was supplied to the radiant heating panel. The predicted mean vote (PMV) results suggest that radiant floor heating is not appropriate for intermittent heating.
